Bad Ice-Cream Resort is not released yet. Nitrome’s official Steam listing still marks it “Coming soon” as of October 29, 2026, so its advertised one-to-four-player local campaign and Steam Remote Play Together support are plans rather than features that can be independently reviewed today. If you want something to play now, BattleBlock Theater is the closest documented two-player 2D jump-and-solve substitute, Unravel Two is the gentler local option, and Overcooked! 2 is the practical choice when four-player group play matters more than platforming.
For a longer, story-led experience designed specifically for two people, choose It Takes Two or Split Fiction. If your priority is communication rather than jumping, Tick Tock: A Tale for Two is a useful detour. The right pick depends on player count, whether everyone is on one screen, how much platforming you want, and which edition or platform you own.
What is the best alternative while Bad Ice-Cream Resort is unreleased?
Choose according to the group you have rather than treating every co-op game as interchangeable:
| Best for | Game | Players and connection | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closest 2D format | BattleBlock Theater | Two-player Story locally or online; four-player Arena | Its cooperative story is not four-player. |
| Gentle two-player platforming | Unravel Two | One or two players in local co-op | The cited publisher information does not establish native online co-op. |
| Four-person group play | Overcooked! 2 | Up to four on the couch or online | Kitchen coordination replaces platforming. |
| Long two-player adventure | It Takes Two | Two players; couch, local wireless or online arrangements vary by edition | No three- or four-player mode. |
| Newer cinematic co-op | Split Fiction | Two players online or shared-screen; Friend’s Pass listed on Steam | 3D, narrative-led and much larger in scope than an arcade platformer. |
| Communication puzzles | Tick Tock: A Tale for Two | Two devices, locally or remotely, with voice communication | Not a shared-screen game or a platformer. |
These are source-based matches, not a claim that every available co-op game has been exhaustively ranked or personally tested. They cover the useful decision points: two versus four players, true 2D movement versus broader tasks, same-screen versus separate-device play, campaign co-op versus competitive modes, and short rounds versus a substantial narrative.

When will Bad Ice-Cream Resort be available?
Nitrome’s official Steam page lists Bad Ice-Cream Resort as “Coming soon.” No settled launch date is established by the supplied material, so do not treat a retailer date, a trailer window or the October 27 announcement of PC and Switch plans as a confirmed release schedule.
Nitrome advertises a campaign for one to four players in local co-op, a separate competitive Battle Mode, controller support and Steam Remote Play Together. It also says that two local players can share a keyboard. Those are planned or advertised features, not findings from a released build. Steam Remote Play Together lets a host stream a local session to invited friends; it is not evidence of dedicated matchmaking or an independently hosted online service.
The original Bad Ice-Cream trilogy is described by Nitrome as having more than 100 million plays. That is the developer’s historical claim, not an independently audited count, and it should not be read as sales, unique players or Resort plays. A Switch plan has been announced, but Steam-specific remote-play wording should not be transferred to Switch, and no current official physical Resort cartridge listing was published.

BattleBlock Theater is the nearest documented format match: a 2D game built around jumping, hazards, puzzles and co-operative progression. Its Story mode supports two players, either together on a couch or online, while separate Arena modes support up to four. That distinction matters if a group sees “four players” in a store description and assumes the campaign supports four.
Why BattleBlock Theater fits
The appeal is structural rather than cosmetic. Two people move through compact 2D stages, coordinate around obstacles and use the game’s action systems to create openings for one another. That gives a pair the quick, readable teamwork that makes a small arcade platformer attractive, without requiring the longer commitment of a cinematic adventure.
Its four-player support belongs to Arena, a different competitive or party-oriented set of modes. For a two-person campaign, buy or install it expecting Story co-op, not a four-player story. If three or four friends need to progress through one shared campaign, this is the wrong choice despite the Arena player count.

Who should choose it?
- Pick it when familiar 2D jumping is more important than a soft visual style or a long story.
- Pick it for two people who want both cooperative stages and optional competitive sessions.
- Skip it when your group requires a four-player campaign or when everyone needs a separate device with no local host.
Is Unravel Two a good gentler alternative?
Yes, particularly for two people who prefer environmental problem-solving to combat or competitive chaos. Electronic Arts specifies single-player and local co-op for Unravel Two. Two Yarnys are physically linked, so positioning, timing and the way one character anchors or swings can determine whether the pair can cross a section.

The linked characters make communication easy to understand: one player’s movement changes what the other can reach. The presentation is softer and more storybook-like than the hectic tone suggested by Resort’s advertised Battle Mode, making it suitable for a relaxed evening or for players who are new to platforming.
The important limitation is connectivity. The cited publisher information establishes local co-op, not native online co-op. If the players are in different homes, confirm the platform’s current remote-play or streaming options before buying; do not assume that a local mode automatically becomes an online mode.
When Unravel Two is the better pick
Choose it for a pair sharing a screen who want deliberate traversal, forgiving collaboration and a calmer pace. It is not a substitute for Resort’s advertised one-to-four-player scale, and it does not provide a four-person group session.
What can four friends play while Bad Ice-Cream Resort is coming soon?
Overcooked! 2 is the clearest four-player recommendation in this list. Its publisher description specifies couch co-op and online play for up to four people. Everyone works in the same kitchen, dividing preparation, cooking, serving and recovery as layouts become more demanding.
This is a genre trade-off, not a platforming match. You will not be jumping through ice-cream-themed stages or solving traversal rooms. The shared objective, escalating hazards and need to communicate make it a strong substitute when the real requirement is “four friends cooperating at once.” It also works well for mixed-skill groups because each person can take a simple role before moving into more complex coordination.

How to decide if the mismatch is acceptable
- Choose Overcooked! 2 if four-player access is non-negotiable.
- Choose it if short rounds, shouting instructions and immediate restarts sound more appealing than a continuous platforming campaign.
- Do not choose it expecting the movement, collectible hunting or puzzle-platforming structure advertised for Resort.
Because both couch and online play are explicitly described for up to four, it is also the least ambiguous option here for a larger group. Check the storefront edition and controller requirements for your platform before starting a local session.
Are It Takes Two and Split Fiction suitable for two players?
They are, but they are substantial two-player adventures rather than compact arcade substitutes. Both are built around paired abilities, with progress designed around two people. Neither provides a three- or four-player campaign.
It Takes Two
It Takes Two is designed for exactly two players and continually changes the abilities and tasks assigned to each character. It supports couch play and online arrangements, but the exact options depend on the edition and platform. Electronic Arts states in its FAQ that no internet connection is required for couch co-op; that statement applies to local play, not to online sessions.

Guidance for original Switch physical owners discusses upgrade circumstances, but it does not make every feature or purchase path identical across Switch and Switch 2. Verify the exact platform listing, required controllers and online-account requirements before buying.
Split Fiction
Split Fiction is a newer, larger-scale action adventure with puzzle-platforming elements and paired abilities. Steam lists online co-op, shared-screen co-op and a Friend’s Pass. That makes it flexible for two people who cannot meet in person, while still supporting a single-screen session.

Its scale is the key difference: expect a cinematic, 3D, narrative-led journey rather than small grid-like rooms or quick arcade rounds. Friend’s Pass still has account and internet conditions, so both players should read the current platform instructions and install the correct edition. Choose it when variety and story matter more than a lightweight pick-up-and-play format.

Is Tick Tock: A Tale for Two a platformer alternative?
No. Tick Tock: A Tale for Two is an optional communication-puzzle detour for exactly two people. Each player uses a separate device and receives asymmetric clues; solving the game depends on describing what you see and listening carefully. It supports local or remote arrangements with voice communication, rather than shared-screen movement.
That makes it useful when the social part of Resort is more important than jumping. It is a poor match for anyone specifically seeking a 2D platformer, combat, collectibles or four-player support. It is, however, a strong choice for two people who enjoy deduction and can keep an open voice channel.
Which alternatives support couch play, online play or both?
Use this connection guide before purchasing:
| Game | Same-screen or couch | Online or remote arrangement established by the sources | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bad Ice-Cream Resort | Advertised local campaign for one to four; two players may share a keyboard | Steam Remote Play Together is advertised | Release status, final feature set and Switch parity. |
| BattleBlock Theater | Two-player Story | Two-player Story online; four-player Arena | That Story and Arena have different player limits. |
| Unravel Two | Local co-op for two | Not established by the cited publisher source | Whether your platform’s own remote-play feature is suitable. |
| Overcooked! 2 | Up to four | Up to four online | Controller count, edition and platform service. |
| It Takes Two | Two; couch or local wireless options vary by edition | Online options and Friend’s Pass depend on edition and account conditions | Switch versus Switch 2 version, ownership and internet requirements. |
| Split Fiction | Shared-screen co-op for two | Online co-op and Friend’s Pass listed on Steam | Compatible accounts, internet and the correct edition. |
| Tick Tock | Two devices rather than one shared screen | Remote play with voice communication | Two supported devices and a reliable voice channel. |
“Online” can mean different things. Native online co-op generally connects each player directly through the game’s service. Steam Remote Play Together instead lets one host run a local multiplayer game and stream the session to invited friends. It can be convenient, but it is not the same as a dedicated matchmaking system, and the host’s hardware, connection and controller setup matter.
How should I choose by player count and play style?
- Two players, closest 2D feel: Start with BattleBlock Theater. Confirm that you are selecting Story, not assuming Arena’s four-player limit applies to the campaign.
- Two players, relaxed local session: Choose Unravel Two if local co-op is enough and you want environmental puzzles with a gentler presentation.
- Three or four players: Choose Overcooked! 2 when coordinated group play outweighs the need for platforming. Resort’s advertised four-player campaign is not currently available to verify.
- Two players, long narrative: Choose It Takes Two or Split Fiction. Read the edition notes first, especially for Switch hardware and Friend’s Pass access.
- Two players, communication challenge: Choose Tick Tock when separate devices and spoken clue-sharing sound better than action.
This approach avoids the most common mismatch: selecting a game because its store page mentions co-op, then discovering that the mode is local-only, limited to two, or attached to a separate competitive playlist.

No current official physical Bad Ice-Cream Resort cartridge listing was published. Do not infer one from the announcement of Switch plans, and do not assume a physical release on one Nintendo system includes the same features as a PC version. Check the exact platform, region, edition and retailer listing at the time of purchase.
What should I check before starting local co-op?
- Confirm the game’s player limit for the specific mode, not just the headline co-op label.
- Connect and test every controller before launching the campaign.
- For keyboard play, check whether the game supports multiple players on one keyboard; Resort’s listing specifically advertises two local keyboard players, but alternatives may differ.
- For online sessions, verify account requirements, platform subscriptions, internet access and whether the game uses native online play or a host-based remote feature.
- For Friend’s Pass, ensure both players have the correct edition, account type and current client version.
- On Switch and Switch 2, read the edition description carefully instead of assuming feature parity.
If a session fails, first reduce the setup to one local host and one controller per player. Then confirm that the selected mode supports the intended player count, update both clients, and re-check whether the connection method is local, native online or remote streaming. These checks resolve more problems than changing graphics settings or reinstalling unrelated software.
Which game should you pick?
For the closest available two-player 2D experience, pick BattleBlock Theater. Pick Unravel Two for calmer local cooperation, Overcooked! 2 for up to four people, and It Takes Two or Split Fiction for a feature-rich two-player adventure. Tick Tock is the specialist choice when verbal deduction matters more than movement.
Bad Ice-Cream Resort remains a future option rather than a currently reviewable purchase. Revisit its official listing when Nitrome announces a release date and final platform details; until then, match your group’s size and connection method to an alternative whose documented mode actually fits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steam Remote Play Together give Bad Ice-Cream Resort dedicated matchmaking?
No. The advertised feature lets a host stream a local multiplayer session to invited friends; it is not proof of public matchmaking or independent online servers. Final behavior can only be confirmed after the game releases.
Can two people play Bad Ice-Cream Resort on one keyboard?
Nitrome’s listing says two local players can share a keyboard. That is an advertised input option for the planned PC version, so check the final controls and remapping menu after launch.
Is BattleBlock Theater’s four-player limit available in its co-op story?
No. The documented Story mode is for two players. Four-player support belongs to separate Arena modes, so a four-person group should not buy it expecting a four-player campaign.
Do It Takes Two and Split Fiction let three friends join the same adventure?
No. Both are designed for two participants. A third person would need to rotate into the session rather than join the same campaign simultaneously.
What should I verify when buying a physical co-op game for Nintendo hardware?
Check the exact console edition, region, included upgrade rights and controller requirements. A physical Switch 2 edition can differ from an original-Switch release, and a planned Switch version does not confirm a cartridge or feature parity for every platform.
