Cloudways is a strong conditional choice for Magento developers in 2026, not a universal “best” host. It adds managed operations, Magento-oriented caching, staging, Git deployment, backups, and one-click server resizing to cloud infrastructure from DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS, or Google Cloud. You retain control over the provider, region, server size, SSH/SFTP access, and deployment workflow.
That combination suits teams that want cloud flexibility without running every operating-system and database task themselves. It is a weaker fit if your priority is the lowest possible raw VPS bill, a bundled domain-and-email account, or a beginner-style control panel with cPanel and a browser file manager. The right decision depends on how much operational work your team can own and how much control your Magento store needs.
What is Cloudways Magento hosting?
Cloudways is a managed layer placed over several cloud providers. You select an underlying provider, a server size, and a data-center location, while Cloudways supplies the management console and operational tooling around that infrastructure. The available providers identified for Magento hosting are DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS, and Google Cloud.

Cloudways says its platform currently supports more than 3,000 Magento stores, a figure that is self-reported rather than an independent market measurement. Its product page also reports 96% customer satisfaction and access to more than 50 data centers; those figures are likewise vendor claims, accessed October 26, 2026.

The practical distinction is responsibility. With a conventional unmanaged virtual server, your team normally handles operating-system updates, service configuration, cache and database tuning, monitoring, backups, and recovery procedures. Cloudways handles much of the server-management layer while leaving you with application-level responsibility for Magento code, extensions, catalog data, checkout configuration, and release decisions.
What the managed stack includes
The platform’s developer-oriented stack includes Varnish, Redis, Memcached, PHP-FPM, and MariaDB, plus Cloudflare integration. These components address common Magento concerns: full-page and object caching, PHP process management, database persistence, and delivery of static assets through a content-delivery layer. Exact performance still depends on your Magento version, theme, extensions, queries, traffic pattern, and configuration.
Developer access is provided through SSH and SFTP. Git integration supports a controlled deployment workflow, while staging and cloning let you create a separate environment or duplicate an application before making a risky change. Backups are available through the platform, and one-click vertical scaling lets you move to a larger server configuration when the current size is no longer adequate.
Is Cloudways good for Magento 2?
It can be a good Magento 2 environment when you need managed infrastructure but still want cloud-provider and deployment control. The included cache services, PHP-FPM, MariaDB, SSH/SFTP, Git, staging, backups, and scaling controls map well to the operational needs of a professional Magento store.
Do not treat “managed” as the same thing as “fully managed Magento development.” Your team still owns Magento configuration, extension compatibility, theme quality, indexing behavior, cron jobs, payment integrations, security practices inside the application, and the release process. Before committing, verify that the Magento release and PHP version you plan to run are supported by the current Cloudways application stack; the available product information does not specify every supported version combination.
Why developers choose it
- Provider choice: You can select among five cloud infrastructures instead of being locked to one company’s data centers.
- Location choice: You choose a location from the provider’s available regions, which helps place the origin closer to customers or other systems.
- Magento-oriented services: Varnish, Redis, Memcached, PHP-FPM, and MariaDB are available without assembling each service from an empty server.
- Release tooling: Git, staging, cloning, SSH, and SFTP support repeatable development and deployment work.
- Growth controls: Backups and one-click vertical scaling provide a path to a larger server when traffic or catalog workloads increase.
What it does not eliminate
- Bad extension code can still produce slow pages, failed indexing, or checkout errors.
- A server that is too small for your catalog, search workload, or peak traffic will still be too small.
- Cache rules must be tested against cart, customer, and personalized pages; a managed cache service does not automatically make every page safe to cache.
- Your team remains responsible for testing upgrades, validating payment flows, and maintaining a rollback plan.
How much does Magento hosting on Cloudways cost?
Cloudways uses pay-as-you-go billing. Your recurring cost depends on the selected cloud provider, server size, actual usage, backup settings, and any add-ons. Because those variables are selectable, there is no single Magento price that applies to every deployment.

| Cost factor | What changes | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud provider | Underlying infrastructure rates and available regions differ among DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS, and Google Cloud. | Compare equivalent CPU, memory, storage, and transfer capacity rather than comparing provider names alone. |
| Server size | More CPU and memory raise the monthly bill but provide headroom for catalog indexing, PHP workers, search, and concurrent requests. | Size from measured workload and peak traffic, then validate with staging or controlled load tests. |
| Usage | Pay-as-you-go billing means the amount can vary with the resources and services consumed. | Review the billing period, projected traffic, and any metered components before launch. |
| Backups | Backup frequency, retention, and storage choices affect total cost. | Choose a recovery point objective first, then price the backup setting that meets it. |
| Add-ons | Optional services can increase the bill beyond the base server amount. | List every required add-on in the estimate instead of using the server price as the total. |
| Trial | The official pricing page advertises a three-day trial. | Use the trial to confirm application behavior, deployment steps, support responses, and billing details before a production migration. |
TechRadar’s October 20, 2026 review recorded a 1 GB DigitalOcean configuration at $14 per month after the free period. That is one reviewed configuration, not a universal Magento price or a guarantee that a production store will run safely on 1 GB. A real store may require a larger plan and additional backup or service capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to estimate a realistic monthly total
- Choose the cloud provider and region that match your customers, integrations, and compliance requirements.
- Define the Magento workload: catalog size, number of store views, search method, cron activity, import frequency, and expected concurrent shoppers.
- Select an initial server size with memory headroom for PHP-FPM workers, MariaDB, Redis, and operating-system processes.
- Add the backup retention and frequency needed to meet your recovery plan.
- Include every required add-on and account for traffic growth rather than pricing only the launch month.
- During the three-day trial, record actual resource use and verify that the projected configuration is not relying on constant saturation.
Can Cloudways handle a high-traffic Magento store?
Cloudways provides the controls needed to build a high-traffic Magento deployment, but the platform alone cannot guarantee a particular traffic level. Capacity depends on application code, database queries, cache hit rates, catalog and index size, media delivery, checkout behavior, and the server configuration you select.
One-click vertical scaling is useful when a store outgrows its current server. You can move to a larger configuration instead of rebuilding the application on a new provider, although you should test the scaling procedure and validate the application afterward. For predictable seasonal peaks, rehearse the change in staging and define who will monitor error rates, checkout completion, queue backlogs, and database health during the event.
What the performance evidence shows
TechRadar’s October 20, 2026 review reported 98% performance, a 903-millisecond Largest Contentful Paint, zero Total Blocking Time, and zero Cumulative Layout Shift in one test from Seattle to London. Those results are encouraging, but they represent one test environment, one route, and one geographic path. They should not be read as a benchmark for every Magento catalog or customer region.
Use independent testing as a directional signal, then measure your own store. Test representative pages such as the home page, category pages, product pages, cart, and checkout. Include logged-in and personalized paths that should not receive the same caching treatment as anonymous catalog pages.
High-traffic readiness checklist
- Confirm that Varnish rules exclude cart, checkout, account, and other personalized responses.
- Use Redis and Memcached deliberately, monitoring memory pressure and eviction behavior.
- Set PHP-FPM workers according to available memory rather than copying a generic value.
- Watch MariaDB slow queries, lock waits, connection limits, and indexer activity.
- Schedule imports, reindexing, and cron-heavy jobs away from peak shopping periods.
- Serve media through the configured delivery and Cloudflare integration, then verify cache headers and purge behavior.
- Keep a tested backup and rollback procedure before major extension, theme, or Magento upgrades.
What is the difference between Cloudways and direct AWS, DigitalOcean, Vultr, or Google Cloud hosting?
Direct cloud hosting usually offers the lowest infrastructure price and the most control, but your team must operate the server. Cloudways costs more than the raw provider instance in many cases because it packages management, tooling, and support around that infrastructure. The better option depends on whether engineering time or infrastructure spend is the tighter constraint.

| Decision area | Cloudways | Direct cloud hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | Pay for the selected provider resources plus Cloudways management, backups, usage, and add-ons. | Often lower raw infrastructure cost, but staff time, monitoring, backup systems, and incident work are your responsibility. |
| Patching and operations | Cloudways manages much of the server layer through its platform. | Your team handles operating-system updates, service configuration, hardening, monitoring, and recovery. |
| Provider and region choice | Choose among DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS, and Google Cloud, subject to the regions exposed in the console. | Use the provider’s full catalog of regions and services directly. |
| Magento cache and database tuning | Varnish, Redis, Memcached, PHP-FPM, and MariaDB are available as part of the managed stack. | Install, configure, secure, update, and tune each component yourself. |
| Staging and deployment | Staging, cloning, Git, SSH, and SFTP are built into the workflow. | Assemble your own staging, deployment, secrets, backup, and rollback tooling. |
| Scaling | One-click vertical scaling provides a managed route to a larger server configuration. | You have broader architectural freedom, but resizing and migration procedures are your responsibility. |
| Support depth | Cloudways provides a support channel for the platform and its managed environment; confirm the exact coverage that your plan includes. | Support is generally limited to the cloud provider’s infrastructure unless you purchase or build additional operational help. |
| Convenience | Less server administration, but no cPanel or browser file manager according to TechRadar’s review. | Choose any control panel or tooling you are willing to install and maintain. |
When direct cloud is the better value
Direct hosting is attractive when you already have engineers who can automate patching, observability, backups, security, and incident response. It also makes sense when you need cloud services or network designs that the managed console does not expose. Compare the full operating cost, including on-call time and recovery testing, rather than comparing only monthly instance prices.
When Cloudways is the better trade-off
Cloudways is more compelling when the team understands Magento but does not want every release to become a server-administration project. The managed layer can shorten setup time while preserving provider, region, access, Git, and staging choices. Brandon Ernst, founder and CEO of Brand on Fire, described the appeal this way: “You can take advantage of the scalability and power of platforms like Digital Ocean, without being a systems administrator or having expertise with a server.”
How does Cloudways compare with simpler managed hosting?
Simpler managed hosts generally optimize for an easier beginner workflow. Cloudways instead emphasizes cloud-provider choice and developer controls. The trade-off is that you receive more decisions and more operational flexibility, but fewer all-in-one conveniences.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Need | Cloudways-style managed cloud | Simpler managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Choose infrastructure provider or region | Core part of the setup across several cloud providers and locations. | Often limited to the host’s own infrastructure choices; exact availability is not stated here. |
| Magento caching and services | Varnish, Redis, Memcached, PHP-FPM, and MariaDB are part of the available stack. | May be more automated, but the specific services and tuning controls vary by host. |
| Developer deployment | SSH/SFTP, Git, staging, and cloning support a team workflow. | May prioritize a visual workflow over repository-based deployment. |
| Control-panel convenience | TechRadar noted no cPanel or browser file manager. | Some simpler hosts provide those conveniences; verify before choosing. |
| Domain and email bundle | Not positioned as an all-in-one domain-and-email bundle, so plan those services separately. | Some hosts bundle domains or mail; confirm renewal terms and technical limits. |
Iain Wang, CEO of ClassBento, said Cloudways offers “an easier interface & a more thorough set of features, which really helps support our growth as a business.” That testimonial reflects one customer’s experience, not a guarantee that every team will find the interface easier than its current host.
How do you deploy a Magento store on Cloudways?
Use a staged migration rather than pointing a live domain at a fresh server immediately. The console labels can change, but the sequence below follows the platform capabilities described for Magento hosting.
- Inventory the application. Record the Magento version, PHP requirement, extensions, cron jobs, search configuration, media volume, database size, payment gateways, shipping integrations, and current DNS time-to-live.
- Launch the application and server. In the Cloudways console, choose the Magento application, select DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS, or Google Cloud, choose a region, and select an initial server size. Keep enough memory for Magento, MariaDB, Redis, PHP-FPM, and operating-system overhead.
- Secure access. Create named SSH/SFTP access for the people and deployment systems that need it. Use the least privilege practical for each account and store credentials in your normal secret-management process.
- Configure the domain plan. Decide whether the existing domain remains with its registrar and which separate service will handle email. Prepare DNS records, but do not switch production traffic until the staging copy is validated.
- Restore or deploy the code and database. Use Git for versioned application code where appropriate, and transfer media and database data through the supported SSH/SFTP or migration process. Keep the source environment available for rollback.
- Set Magento services. Configure Varnish, Redis, Memcached, PHP-FPM, MariaDB, and Cloudflare integration for the application’s needs. Validate cache exclusions for cart, checkout, account, and other personalized responses.
- Run in staging. Use the staging function to test extension compatibility, indexing, cron execution, product imports, search, tax, shipping, payment authorization, refunds, emails, and administrator access.
- Test backups and recovery. Confirm that backups run at the intended frequency and that you can restore the database, media, and application code. A backup that has never been restored is an unverified assumption.
- Performance-test representative journeys. Measure uncached and cached catalog pages, search, cart, and checkout. Watch PHP-FPM, MariaDB, Redis, and server resource use while testing.
- Cut over carefully. Lower DNS time-to-live before migration, schedule the switch during a quiet period, place the store in maintenance mode if required by your procedure, and keep the old environment available until orders and payments are confirmed on the new system.
- Document operations. Write down the deployment path, cache purge method, backup restoration steps, scaling procedure, extension owners, and escalation contacts before declaring the migration complete.
What are Cloudways’ main limitations for Magento developers?
The platform’s flexibility comes with trade-offs that should be explicit in your decision.

It is not the cheapest raw VPS
Buying an equivalent server directly from a cloud provider can cost less on the invoice when your team supplies the administration. Cloudways’ value is the managed layer and workflow, so compare the subscription against the engineering hours and operational tooling you would otherwise provide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →There is no cPanel or browser file manager
TechRadar specifically noted the absence of cPanel and a browser-based file manager. Teams accustomed to those tools must use the Cloudways console together with SSH, SFTP, Git, and their own local development tooling.
Domain and email may require separate services
If you want one account for hosting, domain registration, and mailbox management, Cloudways may not match that preference. Treat domain DNS and email as separate design decisions and include their costs, authentication records, monitoring, and support in the project plan.
Managed infrastructure does not replace application expertise
Cloudways can manage much of the server environment, but it cannot fix a poorly written extension, a broken checkout integration, an inefficient import, or an unsafe customization. Assign Magento ownership inside your team and maintain a tested release process.
Performance claims have limited scope
The available independent evidence consists of one TechRadar test path from Seattle to London. The reported metrics are useful context, but they do not establish performance for every region, device, catalog, or traffic pattern. Your own measurements should determine the production size and caching strategy.
Who should choose Cloudways Magento hosting in 2026?
Choose Cloudways when you want a managed operating layer but still need provider and region selection, SSH/SFTP, Git, staging, cloning, backups, Magento-oriented cache services, and a straightforward path to vertical scaling. It is particularly suitable for agencies, in-house eCommerce teams, and developers who can manage Magento itself but do not want to build a complete server-operations practice.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose direct cloud hosting when your team already operates Linux and database infrastructure, needs specialized cloud architecture, or is optimizing for the lowest raw infrastructure price. Choose a simpler managed host when cPanel, browser file management, bundled domains, email, or a highly guided beginner workflow matters more than provider-level control.
The most defensible conclusion is conditional: Cloudways is a capable middle ground between an unmanaged VPS and a tightly constrained managed host. It is a good Magento choice when the cost of reduced server administration justifies the premium and your team is prepared to own application performance, security, and deployment quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cloudways provide Magento email hosting with the server?
The available product information positions Cloudways as managed application hosting rather than an all-in-one domain-and-mailbox package. Plan email separately and verify DNS authentication, sending limits, deliverability monitoring, and support responsibilities before migration.
Can I move an existing Magento store to Cloudways without changing its domain?
Yes, a migration can preserve the public domain by deploying and testing the store on a temporary or staging address, then changing DNS during the cutover. Keep the original environment available until orders, payments, customer logins, and background jobs are confirmed on the new server.
What should I monitor after moving Magento to Cloudways?
Track PHP-FPM saturation, MariaDB slow queries and connections, Redis memory behavior, cache-hit patterns, cron and indexer completion, checkout errors, payment callbacks, and backup success. Monitor both infrastructure signals and business outcomes such as add-to-cart and completed-order rates.
Is the three-day Cloudways trial long enough to test Magento?
It is long enough for a focused technical proof of concept, not a full seasonal or long-term reliability study. Use it to validate deployment, extensions, cache behavior, backups, restore procedures, and a representative checkout path before deciding on production migration.
