Cloudflare Workers production profiling can capture a CPU profile or a heap allocation profile for a deployed Worker or Durable Object. Captures made through the documented CLI or API last 1,000–50,000 milliseconds and require an already-loaded isolate receiving traffic while the capture runs. Cloudflare documents a heap-allocation sampling cadence, but not a CPU-profile sampling interval, a numeric capture quota, a profile-retention period, or a profiler-overhead figure. Those gaps matter: tracing and log retention settings are separate features, not substitutes for profiler specifications.
What does Cloudflare Workers profiling capture?
Production profiling collects performance data from a deployed Worker or Durable Object instance while it is active. Choose a CPU profile to investigate where code spends CPU time. Choose a heap profile to see where allocations originate. These profiles answer different questions, and neither is a record of past requests.
Cloudflare’s production profiling documentation describes the feature and the capture requirements. A profile can be captured from the dashboard, Cloudflare CLI, or API, then downloaded for inspection with a pprof-compatible tool. The profile is useful only if the selected instance is loaded and real requests exercise the code you want to examine during the capture.

A CPU profile helps locate functions that consume CPU time during the capture. It is appropriate when a route is slow because of computation, or when a request approaches its CPU execution limit. It does not, by itself, explain time spent waiting on network activity: Cloudflare’s CPU-time definition excludes time spent waiting for network requests.

The production guide does not publish a numeric CPU-profile sampling interval. Do not infer one from the heap profile’s allocation cadence or from tracing’s sampling controls; they describe different mechanisms.
Heap profile: find allocation sources, not live memory
A heap profile records allocation stack traces during capture, at one stack trace per 512 kB allocated. Cloudflare states: “A Heap profile measures allocations, not retained memory.” It can help identify code that creates many objects, but it does not establish which objects remain live or how much memory is retained after garbage collection.
That distinction changes how to interpret a result. A hot allocation site can indicate temporary churn even if the objects are later reclaimed. Conversely, this profile type is not a substitute for a retained-heap snapshot when the question is which objects remain reachable.
How long can a production profile run?
The documented CLI and API accept a capture duration from 1,000 to 50,000 milliseconds. That is the profiler’s capture window, not the maximum CPU time allowed for a Worker request. A capture records what happens during its window; it does not extend the Worker’s execution budget.
Plan the window around the behavior under investigation. A brief capture may miss an intermittent path unless requests reach it during that interval. A longer capture can include more representative activity, but still depends on live requests reaching the selected instance. The production guide does not publish a numeric capture-rate quota; it does warn that capture requests may be rate-limited.

How do I capture a useful production profile?
Start with a specific question, choose the matching profile type, and arrange for the relevant production path to receive traffic during the capture. The profiler observes an active isolate; it does not invoke the Worker or replay historical requests for you.
- Define the question. Choose CPU profiling for functions consuming CPU time, or heap profiling for allocation sources. Select a Worker version or Durable Object instance that corresponds to the behavior you are diagnosing.
- Check that the target is active. The isolate must already be loaded and recently active. If it is idle or has not loaded, a capture may not find a suitable target.
- Arrange relevant traffic. Send or wait for requests that exercise the route and code of interest while the capture is running. Historical log ranges do not make the profile retrospective, and starting a profile does not generate requests.
- Set the capture duration. For CLI or API captures, use a duration from 1,000 to 50,000 ms. Treat this as the observation window, not as a request-time allowance.
- Capture from a supported surface. Use the dashboard, Cloudflare CLI, or API. API access requires a token with Workers Scripts Read permission or the Content Read-Only Workers role, as described in the production guide.
- Inspect the downloaded profile. Cloudflare says profiles from the dashboard, CLI, or API can be downloaded and examined with pprof-compatible tools. Use the output to investigate the selected signal rather than treating an allocation profile as a live-memory report.
Make source locations readable
Source maps help turn generated or bundled code locations into more recognizable source names and locations. The production guide says Wrangler uploads source maps by default starting with version 4.150.0. If a profile is difficult to map back to your code, check whether the deployed version’s source maps were available; an unreadable location does not necessarily mean the profile failed to capture activity.

An API capture request can return HTTP 429 when rate limited. Cloudflare’s guidance is to wait and honor the Retry-After header when it is supplied. The reviewed guide does not give a fixed number of captures per minute, hour, or account, so avoid designing automation around an assumed quota.
What does sampling mean here, and how much overhead does profiling add?
“Sampling” is not one universal setting across Cloudflare’s observability tools. Heap profiling documents allocation sampling; CPU profiling does not publish a numeric interval in the production guide; tracing has its own head-based request sampling. None of these facts establishes the runtime overhead of an active CPU or heap profile.

Cloudflare does not quantify CPU or latency overhead for an active production profile in its profiling guide. It is therefore not supportable to promise that profiling has zero cost or to estimate a percentage impact from the published material. If overhead is a concern, use a targeted capture window and monitor the Worker’s ordinary operational metrics while collecting the profile; treat any observed change as specific to your workload and capture, not as a published general figure.

How are profiling capture limits different from Worker CPU limits?
The capture duration controls how long the profiler observes an instance; the request CPU limit controls how much CPU time a Worker request may use. Confusing them can lead to the wrong diagnosis: a 50-second capture does not grant a request 50 seconds of CPU, and a request CPU ceiling does not cap the duration of a profile capture.

Cloudflare’s Workers limits documentation, updated October 12, 2026, lists a 10 ms CPU-time limit per HTTP request on Free. On Paid, the default is 30 seconds, with a maximum of 5 minutes; the Paid limit can be raised up to 300,000 ms. CPU time is time spent executing Worker code, not time waiting on network requests.
The same limits page reports that the average Worker uses approximately 2.2 ms per request, while heavier workloads such as authentication, server-side rendering, or large payload handling typically use 10–20 ms. These are Cloudflare’s published workload figures, not profiling measurements and not a prediction for a particular Worker. Compare a profile with the limits and actual behavior of the applicable plan, rather than using these averages as a target or guarantee.
How long are CPU and heap profiles retained?
Cloudflare’s production profiling guide does not state a retention period for captured CPU or heap profile artifacts. The reviewed public documentation therefore does not establish how long a profile remains available after capture. Do not assume a profile will remain downloadable for the same period as logs, traces, or metrics.

- Workers traces: the tracing documentation describes seven-day retention.
- Workers Logs: Cloudflare’s logs documentation describes a maximum retention period of seven days.
- Metrics: the metrics and analytics documentation says metrics can be inspected up to three months in the past, in increments of up to one week.
If a profile matters for an incident record or later comparison, download it and store it in a location governed by your own retention policy. That practical safeguard does not imply that Cloudflare’s profile artifact has a particular expiration period.
Can I profile locally instead of in production?
Cloudflare documents local CPU profiling through Wrangler DevTools. Local profiling can help reproduce and inspect behavior without capturing a deployed instance, but Cloudflare cautions that reproducing production behavior locally can be difficult. Similar requests and, where appropriate, production-like data through remote bindings can make the local scenario more representative.
Use local profiling when you can reproduce the relevant workload in development. Use production profiling when the issue depends on deployed traffic or environment, while accounting for the requirement that the live target be active and receive the requests of interest. The two approaches answer related questions but are not interchangeable if production-only behavior cannot be reproduced locally. See Cloudflare’s CPU profiling guidance for Wrangler DevTools.

A missing or unhelpful profile can reflect a mismatch between the target, traffic, capture window, or profile type rather than a product failure. Check the conditions that determine whether the capture sees the behavior you intended.

- The wrong operation appears: confirm that the traffic reaching the instance followed the route or workload you meant to investigate. Profiling does not replay earlier requests.
- Memory question, but the profile shows allocations: that is expected for a heap profile; its allocation stacks do not identify retained live memory.
- API returns 429: wait before retrying and follow
Retry-Afterif the response includes it. Do not repeatedly retry on a guessed fixed schedule. - Locations are difficult to map to source: check the source-map availability for the deployed build. - Local results do not match production: assess whether the same requests, data shape, bindings, and workload are represented; Cloudflare notes that reproducing production behavior locally can be difficult.

Can Cloudflare Workers profiling show why a request is slow if it is waiting on a network call?
A CPU profile is intended to show CPU-consuming functions, while Cloudflare defines CPU time as excluding time spent waiting on network requests. Pair CPU evidence with the relevant request and tracing context if you need to investigate waiting time.
Can I use a heap profile to find a memory leak in a Worker?
It can help identify allocation sites that may contribute to memory pressure, but it does not show which allocations remain live. A leak investigation needs evidence about retained or growing memory in addition to allocation churn.
Do Cloudflare Workers logs or traces preserve a profile for seven days?
No. The seven-day windows described for traces and logs apply to those respective datasets; they do not establish how long a CPU or heap profile artifact remains available.

Can I profile a Worker version that is no longer receiving requests?
The production capture depends on an already-loaded, active target receiving traffic during the capture. The guide does not describe a way to generate a retrospective profile for an inactive version from historical requests.
