Cloud security posture management (CSPM) and cloud-native application protection platforms (CNAPP) are not equivalent alternatives. CSPM concentrates on finding cloud misconfigurations, policy violations, and compliance risks, then helping teams fix them. CNAPP is a broader platform approach that usually includes CSPM plus connected controls for code, identities, workloads, deployment pipelines, containers, and runtime protection. In practice, CSPM is commonly one component of a CNAPP. Choose between them by mapping your actual coverage gap to the modules, cloud connectors, workload support, integrations, and plan limits you can buy—not by relying on the product label.

What is the difference between CSPM and CNAPP?

CSPM is centered on the security posture of cloud accounts, resources, and services. CNAPP extends that concern across the cloud-native application lifecycle, correlating posture findings with identities, workloads, development activity, deployment controls, and runtime signals when those capabilities are included.

AWS describes CSPM as “a practice by which to identify misconfiguration issues and compliance risks across workloads, accounts, and resources to maintain your cloud security posture.” Microsoft’s Defender for Cloud documentation similarly describes continuous visibility into cloud assets and workloads, assessment against security standards, and actionable remediation guidance.

Microsoft Security’s CNAPP explainer, updated April 13, 2026, defines the broader approach as bringing “unified visibility, protection, and risk prioritization to cloud-native apps—from build to runtime.” That lifecycle wording is the practical dividing line: CSPM asks whether cloud resources are configured safely; CNAPP attempts to connect that answer with how software is built, deployed, operated, and attacked.

How does CSPM work?

CSPM connects to cloud environments, evaluates configuration and policy state, and produces findings that security or operations teams can prioritize and remediate. The exact checks depend on the provider, supported services, standards, and plan.

Configuration and policy assessment

Typical checks examine settings such as network exposure, encryption, logging, identity permissions, storage access, backup controls, and other provider-specific safeguards. A CSPM service can compare those settings with a security baseline or compliance framework and flag drift as environments change.

Finding aggregation and prioritization

Rather than requiring analysts to inspect every account independently, CSPM aggregates findings across the connected scope. Useful implementations add severity, affected-resource context, policy references, and dependencies so teams can distinguish an internet-exposed production database from a low-impact development deviation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remediation support

Remediation may consist of step-by-step recommendations, infrastructure-as-code changes, workflow tickets, or automated actions. Automation must be governed: a correction that is safe for one account or region can disrupt a legitimate exception elsewhere. Record approvals and exceptions so a compliant posture does not depend on undocumented manual changes.

What CSPM does not automatically cover

A posture finding does not, by itself, establish that application code is safe, a container image is free of exploitable packages, an identity is being abused, or a running workload is behaving maliciously. Some CSPM services add selected workload or identity features, but those additions vary. Treat CSPM as a capability description, not a guarantee that every product has the same boundary.

What does a CNAPP add beyond CSPM?

CNAPP connects several cloud-security disciplines so a team can reason about one application or attack path instead of isolated alerts. The exact bundle is vendor- and plan-dependent, but a broader implementation can include the following layers.

Application and infrastructure development

Code, infrastructure-as-code templates, dependencies, secrets, and build configurations can be assessed before deployment. Early findings can be routed to developers while a change is still inexpensive to correct.

Cloud workload protection

Virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes components, serverless functions, and hosts can require vulnerability assessment, hardening, malware or exploit detection, and behavioral controls. Confirm which workload types are supported and whether protection requires an agent, an eBPF component, an admission controller, or a provider-native integration.

Identity and entitlement context

CNAPP products may correlate a risky resource with the identities that can reach it, excessive permissions, service-account paths, or an exploitable privilege chain. That context helps rank a configuration issue by probable attack impact rather than by configuration severity alone.

Deployment and pipeline controls

Connections to source repositories, build systems, registries, and deployment tools can enforce checks or carry findings into release decisions. The useful question is not whether a product advertises “DevSecOps,” but which tools it connects to, what events it evaluates, and whether policy can block or merely report.

Runtime detection and response

Runtime telemetry can reveal suspicious process activity, network behavior, or exploitation after an application is live. This is a different signal from a pre-deployment misconfiguration scan, and it may involve separate data retention, sensor, or licensing requirements.

Is CSPM a component of CNAPP?

Usually, yes. Industry usage treats CSPM as a foundational CNAPP capability, while CNAPP adds at least several other protections around the application lifecycle. IDC’s June 2025 CNAPP assessment required CSPM plus at least three additional capabilities from its defined list. That is IDC’s methodology for that assessment, not a universal certification or a promise that every platform includes every function.

TechTarget likewise describes CNAPP suites as including CSPM and distinguishes them from tools focused mainly on cloud configuration and compliance posture. However, the same “CNAPP” label can cover materially different modules, connectors, and plan tiers. A buyer should ask for a capability matrix and test the exact edition being proposed.

How do CSPM and CNAPP compare?

The following comparison describes the center of gravity of each category. It is an evaluation framework, not a claim that every service fits every cell.

Axis CSPM-oriented evaluation Broader CNAPP evaluation
Primary scope Cloud configuration, posture, policy, and compliance findings Connected risks across posture and additional application, workload, identity, and lifecycle capabilities
Lifecycle Assess cloud resources and support posture remediation Build, deployment, and runtime visibility and protection, depending on actual product scope
Risk context Configuration findings and prioritization Correlation across posture, identity, workload, and other available signals
Coverage Cloud accounts, resources, and supported services Cloud providers plus supported workloads, containers, development tools, and other components
Workflow Findings, recommendations, and remediation support Integration into developer, security, operations, and incident-response workflows
Procurement question Which resources, controls, standards, and remediation actions does the plan include? Which modules, connectors, sensors, integrations, retention periods, and SKU boundaries are included?

Should you choose CSPM or CNAPP?

Choose according to the risk domains you must control, not according to which acronym sounds more complete. A focused CSPM deployment can be the right starting point when the immediate problem is configuration drift or compliance evidence. CNAPP is more appropriate to evaluate when you need connected visibility from development through runtime.

Start with CSPM when your gap is primarily posture

  • You need an inventory of cloud accounts, resources, and security settings.
  • Configuration drift, policy violations, or audit preparation consumes most of the team’s time.
  • Your remediation process is built around recommendations, tickets, or infrastructure-as-code changes.
  • You do not yet require integrated code, pipeline, workload, identity, and runtime analysis.

Even in this case, verify multi-cloud and service coverage. A tool that checks one provider’s core services may leave blind spots in a second provider, a managed database, a serverless function, or a newly introduced regional service.

Evaluate CNAPP when risks cross lifecycle boundaries

  • Developers, platform engineers, and security analysts need a shared view of the same application risk.
  • You must connect a vulnerable package or image to the workload, identity, and data it can reach.
  • Security policy must be enforced in source, build, registry, deployment, and runtime workflows.
  • Cloud incidents require runtime detection in addition to preventive configuration checks.
  • You are trying to reduce duplicate findings and separate consoles, while accepting that integration work is still required.

Do not assume a CNAPP automatically replaces existing tools. It may overlap with vulnerability management, cloud-native detection, identity governance, application security, or security-information platforms. Measure the operational benefit after accounting for connectors, data migration, tuning, and analyst training.

What should you compare in a CSPM or CNAPP evaluation?

Use a written coverage matrix and require each supplier to mark capabilities by cloud, workload, region, edition, and integration. The following sequence keeps a broad platform from obscuring a narrow deployment need.

  1. Inventory the environment. List cloud providers, accounts and subscriptions, regions, Kubernetes clusters, virtual machines, serverless functions, registries, source repositories, build systems, deployment tools, and sensitive data stores.
  2. Define the concrete gap. Classify each requirement as configuration and compliance drift, workload vulnerability, identity entitlement, code or pipeline risk, runtime detection, or correlation across several domains.
  3. Set minimum coverage. Specify the resources and workload versions that must be scanned, the security standards required, scan frequency, data-retention period, and whether disconnected or hybrid assets are in scope.
  4. Map workflow requirements. Document where findings must go—ticketing, chat, source control, CI/CD, incident response, or a security-information platform—and whether the integration supports bidirectional status and ownership.
  5. Test prioritization. Use representative scenarios, such as an exposed storage resource reachable by an overprivileged workload identity, and check whether the platform correlates the signals or produces unrelated alerts.
  6. Validate remediation safely. Determine whether recommendations are explanatory, generated as code, ticket-based, or automatically executable. Test approval, rollback, exception, and audit-log behavior before enabling automation.
  7. Price the enabled scope. Request the cost for the actual number of accounts, resources, hosts, containers, identities, data volume, connectors, and retention requirements. Separate included features from paid modules and consumption-based charges.
  8. Run an operational pilot. Measure finding quality, duplicate reduction, time to assign, false-positive handling, sensor overhead, and the effort required to maintain integrations. A label or feature checklist cannot establish those outcomes on its own.

What do current cloud-provider examples show?

Provider services illustrate how category boundaries can be implemented, but they are not a head-to-head product evaluation and their coverage is not automatically equivalent.

Microsoft Defender for Cloud CSPM

Microsoft documents a Foundational CSPM tier at no charge and a paid Defender CSPM tier with additional posture capabilities. The service documentation describes support for Azure, AWS, and GCP, hybrid resources connected through Azure Arc, and specified DevOps integrations. Availability, billable-resource definitions, and feature limits vary by cloud, plan, and feature, so confirm the current documentation for the deployment region and subscription structure.

AWS Security Hub CSPM

AWS says Security Hub CSPM performs security best-practice checks, aggregates findings, and can enable automated remediation across AWS accounts, workloads, and resources. AWS also notes that many controls require AWS Config to be activated. That dependency can affect both implementation effort and operating cost, so include configuration-recording requirements in the design.

These examples demonstrate why a category comparison cannot substitute for a service review. One provider’s “CSPM” may include selected integrations or workload context, while a “CNAPP” plan elsewhere may place those functions in separately licensed modules.

What are the main implementation pitfalls?

Buying the acronym instead of the coverage

CNAPP is a category and platform approach, not a standardized bundle. Ask for a current feature list tied to a specific SKU, cloud, region, and release. Record which capabilities are generally available, preview-only, or dependent on another service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring connector and sensor requirements

Cloud APIs, agents, admission controllers, repository permissions, and pipeline hooks each create deployment and ownership work. Confirm least-privilege permissions, network paths, upgrade responsibility, and what happens when a connector is unavailable.

Assuming consolidation lowers cost or risk

A single console can improve context, but the sources do not establish a universal reduction in price, workload, or incidents. Include existing licenses, duplicated data, onboarding labor, tuning, storage, and the cost of enabling every required module.

Automating remediation without exceptions

Automatic changes can break deliberate architecture decisions or regulated workloads. Begin with notification and approval, define exception expiration, and require an audit trail before allowing broad write access.

Measuring alert volume rather than outcomes

Track time to validate and fix a meaningful risk, percentage of assets covered, policy exceptions with owners, and whether developers receive actionable findings before release. A larger finding count is not evidence of better protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a procurement checklist include?

  • Supported cloud providers, accounts, regions, managed services, containers, hosts, serverless functions, and hybrid assets.
  • Security standards, custom policies, exception handling, evidence export, and audit history.
  • Code, infrastructure-as-code, dependency, image, registry, pipeline, and deployment integrations, if required.
  • Identity, entitlement, data-sensitivity, workload, and runtime signals, with the correlation rules that connect them.
  • Remediation choices: guidance, generated code, tickets, workflows, or automatic changes; include rollback and approval controls.
  • API limits, scan frequency, sensor or agent overhead, data retention, regional processing, and service-level commitments.
  • Plan and SKU boundaries, billable-resource definitions, feature prerequisites, and costs for the intended scale.
  • Export and integration support for existing security infrastructure, plus migration and coexistence requirements.

What is the practical verdict?

CSPM is the focused answer to “are our cloud resources configured and governed safely?” CNAPP is the broader answer to “can we connect and protect risk across the application lifecycle?” Because CSPM is commonly inside CNAPP, the decision is usually about required breadth, integration, and plan economics rather than selecting two mutually exclusive technologies.

Document the minimum posture controls first, then add workload, identity, development, and runtime requirements only where your threat model and operating model need them. Verify every promised capability in the exact service edition, connector set, and cloud scope you will deploy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a company use CSPM and CNAPP at the same time?

Yes. A team can operate a focused CSPM service for a particular cloud while using separate application, workload, or runtime controls, or it can adopt a CNAPP that includes CSPM. Define ownership and deduplication rules so the same finding is not repeatedly triaged in multiple consoles.

Does CNAPP require installing agents on every workload?

Not necessarily. Some posture and development checks use cloud APIs or integrations, while runtime and host protections may require agents, sensors, or platform-specific components. Ask which functions work agentlessly and what visibility is lost when a sensor cannot be deployed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can a regulated organization prove CSPM findings were remediated?

Use evidence exports, immutable change records, exception owners and expiration dates, and links between findings and approved remediation tickets or code changes. Confirm the service preserves historical posture and audit data for the retention period required by your policy.

What is a sensible first CNAPP pilot?

Choose one representative application spanning its repository, build pipeline, cloud resources, identities, and production workload. Test a small set of high-impact scenarios end to end, including developer notification, deployment decision, runtime alerting, remediation approval, and evidence capture.
