Choose a unified CNAPP when your biggest risk is fragmented context across code, cloud configuration, identities, workloads and production. Choose separate CSPM and runtime products when a specialist control is mission-critical, your SIEM/SOAR and DevOps integrations already work well, or you need to adopt capabilities incrementally. A platform can reduce duplicate findings and handoffs, but “platform” does not guarantee equal maturity in every module. Validate coverage, runtime depth, deployment model, cloud support and operating effort in a proof of concept using your own AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes and incident data.
What is the difference between CSPM, runtime security and a CNAPP?
Cloud security posture management (CSPM) continuously evaluates cloud resources for misconfiguration, compliance drift and exposure. Runtime security protects active compute—hosts, virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes workloads and serverless functions—from vulnerabilities, suspicious behavior and attacks. A cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) combines these and related controls in one tightly integrated system.
Gartner’s 2024 definition, reproduced by Palo Alto Networks, calls CNAPPs “a unified and tightly integrated set of security and compliance capabilities designed to protect cloud-native infrastructure and applications.” In practice, a CNAPP commonly brings together CSPM, cloud infrastructure entitlement management (CIEM), cloud workload protection (CWPP), code and infrastructure-as-code security, web/API protection and data-security posture management (DSPM).

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe important qualification is implementation depth. The 2025 CSO buyer guide describes CNAPP as a combination of four traditional product areas but cautions that few products implement every category fully. Treat the word platform as an integration claim to test, not proof that every module is equally mature.

What CSPM actually finds
CSPM evaluates settings such as public storage, overly permissive network rules, missing encryption, weak logging and policy violations. It is strongest before an incident: the product identifies an unsafe state and gives an owner a path to correct it. CSPM alone normally cannot tell you whether an exposed workload is being actively exploited or whether a vulnerable package is running in a reachable process.
What runtime protection adds
Runtime tools observe behavior after workloads are deployed. Depending on the product and license, they can detect or block exploitation, malware, credential abuse, lateral movement, container escape attempts and anomalous process or network activity. Coverage may differ substantially between host agents, container sensors and serverless instrumentation, so ask for evidence from the exact workload types you operate.
What a CNAPP is supposed to connect
A mature CNAPP links an identity, an exposed asset, a vulnerable component, a cloud relationship and runtime evidence into one risk story. That connection can turn hundreds of isolated posture findings into a short list of attack paths. It can also feed remediation into code review, infrastructure-as-code pipelines, ticketing and security operations workflows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When is a unified cloud security platform the better choice?
A unified platform is usually the better fit when the organization’s main problem is fragmented visibility and it can standardize policy, telemetry and remediation around one operating model.
- One investigation queue: posture, identity, vulnerability and runtime signals can be correlated instead of triaged in separate consoles.
- Fewer handoffs: security, platform engineering and developers can share a finding, owner, evidence and remediation status.
- Code-to-cloud workflows: mature integrations can detect an issue in infrastructure-as-code, prevent deployment, and track the corresponding production asset.
- Risk-based prioritization: the platform may rank an exploitable combination—such as an internet-exposed workload with a reachable critical vulnerability—above a harmless configuration warning.
- Consistent multicloud policy: a single policy model can make differences between AWS, Azure and Google Cloud easier to manage, provided the controls are genuinely equivalent.
These benefits are operational, not merely cosmetic. Reducing consoles does not help if the underlying data is incomplete or the teams still maintain separate queues. Measure the time from detection to an owned, verified fix during evaluation.

When do separate CSPM and runtime products make more sense?
Separate tools remain a sound architecture when depth, flexibility or incremental adoption matters more than consolidation.
- Mission-critical specialist coverage: a dedicated Kubernetes runtime, host intrusion-control system or serverless monitor may provide controls that a broad suite’s default module lacks.
- Existing integrations: if your SIEM, SOAR, ticketing and DevOps pipelines already normalize findings and assign ownership reliably, replacing them may create more risk than it removes.
- Phased investment: teams can establish CSPM first, then add runtime protection after asset ownership, logging and incident processes are ready.
- Independent replacement: changing one component does not require migrating the entire data model, agent fleet and workflow stack.
- Organizational autonomy: a platform team, security operations center and application group can select controls that fit their environments while sharing agreed interfaces.
The trade-off is that correlation becomes your responsibility. You must reconcile identities, asset names, vulnerability records, owners and severity models across products, and verify that build-time findings do not disappear at deployment.
What are the main trade-offs in a direct comparison?
| Decision area | Unified CNAPP | Separate CSPM plus runtime tools | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Risk context | Potentially shared graph linking identity, exposure, vulnerability and runtime evidence | Correlation depends on integrations, data normalization and analyst work | Can one incident show the full path from identity to asset to process? |
| Coverage breadth | CSPM, CIEM, CWPP, code/IaC, API and data controls may be packaged together | Each product can be selected for a narrower capability | Which modules are included, and which require separate licenses? |
| Specialist depth | Depth can vary by module and workload type | A specialist may offer stronger controls for a specific host, container or Kubernetes use case | Test detection, blocking, behavioral analytics and response on representative workloads |
| Deployment | May combine agentless cloud APIs with host or workload sensors | Different agents, collectors and scan schedules are common | Compare visibility, latency, performance overhead and blind spots |
| Operations | Fewer consoles, policy engines and contracts | Existing SOC, SIEM, SOAR and DevOps integrations can remain intact | Count analyst steps, queues, escalation paths and skills required |
| Portability | Risk of lock-in to one vendor’s graph, agents and workflow model | Components can be replaced independently | Check API limits, export formats, retention and offboarding procedures |
| Economics | May include unused modules or bundle pricing | More contracts and integration work, but selective licensing | Model license units, telemetry, agents, implementation and ongoing integration costs |
Current prices were not established for this comparison. Obtain region-specific quotes and ask vendors to separate recurring license fees from implementation, premium modules, telemetry overages and support.
How should I compare coverage and runtime depth?
Start with an inventory of the environments that matter, then score evidence rather than feature names.
Build a capability matrix
- Clouds: list AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, private cloud and hybrid accounts, including the services that hold production data.
- Workloads: include Windows and Linux hosts, virtual machines, containers, managed Kubernetes, serverless functions and build runners.
- Control types: map CSPM, CIEM, vulnerability management, code and IaC scanning, API security, DSPM, threat detection, prevention and response.
- Evidence: require a sample alert with asset identity, account, owner, vulnerable component, exploitability context, process or network data and recommended action.
Separate detection from prevention
Ask whether a control only reports, can quarantine or block, or supports a documented response workflow. A product that detects suspicious container behavior but cannot isolate the workload may still be useful, but it should not be scored as equivalent to a prevention control.

Test agentless and agent-based visibility
Agentless collection can provide rapid inventory and broad cloud coverage with little workload impact. Agents or sensors generally provide richer process, file, network and behavioral telemetry, but they require deployment, upgrades and performance testing. Many environments need both; compare what each method misses rather than treating one as universally superior.

Which approach works best for multicloud and Kubernetes?
Neither architecture wins automatically. The deciding factor is whether controls behave consistently across providers and whether the product sees the Kubernetes control plane, nodes, containers, identities and runtime events you actually use.
Multicloud checks
- Connect representative AWS, Azure and Google Cloud accounts, not empty demonstration tenants.
- Deploy equivalent misconfigurations in each cloud and compare policy coverage, severity and remediation guidance.
- Test identity relationships across cloud roles, service principals and federated accounts.
- Measure inventory freshness, API throttling behavior and handling of managed services.
- Confirm that findings can be exported with stable asset identifiers for your SIEM, ticketing and data warehouse.
Kubernetes checks
- Use a cluster with managed control-plane components, worker nodes, containers, registries and admission policies that resemble production.
- Test image vulnerabilities, privileged pods, exposed services, risky service accounts, secrets and network-policy violations.
- Generate a controlled runtime event and verify whether the product identifies the namespace, pod, image digest, node, process and initiating identity.
- Measure sensor overhead and behavior during node scaling, rolling deployments and cluster upgrades.
- Check ownership routing: a finding should reach the platform or application team that can fix it, not a generic security queue.
A broad platform may simplify these tests by sharing an asset graph. Separate products may deliver deeper Kubernetes controls. Let the observed evidence and operator effort decide.
How do I run a proof of concept that reflects production?
Use a time-boxed evaluation with the same accounts, pipelines and incident types your teams will operate after purchase.
- Define success criteria. Set measurable targets for inventory coverage, critical-finding recall, false-positive rate, alert latency, remediation time, agent overhead and analyst steps.
- Select representative scope. Include AWS, Azure and Google Cloud where applicable; at least one Kubernetes cluster; identities with federated access; IaC repositories; CI/CD pipelines; and a host, container and serverless workload if those are in production.
- Seed safe test conditions. Introduce controlled posture errors, vulnerable packages, excessive permissions and benign runtime behaviors. Document expected detections before enabling products.
- Exercise response. Test ticket creation, ownership, automated remediation, quarantine or blocking, evidence retention and rollback. Record who must leave the primary console to complete each action.
- Stress integrations. Send findings to the existing SIEM/SOAR and DevOps systems. Check deduplication, severity mapping, API limits and whether asset IDs remain stable.
- Review economics. Calculate license units, telemetry volume, agent count, storage, implementation labor, training and the cost of maintaining connectors and policy exceptions.
- Document exclusions. Record unsupported services, delayed data sources, manual steps, required premium modules and any control that worked only in a demonstration.
Choose the design that produces the strongest evidence with the lowest sustainable operator effort, not the one with the longest feature list.

What should I know about leading platform options?
These examples illustrate different starting points; verify current scope, packaging and licensing directly before making a decision.
Microsoft Defender for Cloud
Microsoft documents multicloud and DevOps data collection, CSPM plans and server protection for Windows and Linux workloads across Azure, AWS, Google Cloud and on-premises environments. It is a natural first evaluation for an Azure-heavy organization already using Microsoft security tooling. Confirm which protections require additional plans and how non-Microsoft workloads are covered.
Wiz
Wiz’s 2025 guidance emphasizes unified CSPM, CWPP and CIEM, an agentless architecture, runtime protection, automated remediation and DevOps integration. It can suit buyers prioritizing rapid multicloud visibility and a consolidated risk graph. Validate runtime depth, prevention functions and workload support for your Kubernetes, host and serverless estate.
Palo Alto Networks Prisma Cloud and Cortex Cloud
Palo Alto documentation describes a CNAPP scope that includes CSPM, CWPP, code security, web application and API security, CIEM and DSPM. This direction suits organizations seeking broad security-estate integration and able to operate a larger platform. The evaluation should focus on module boundaries, deployment complexity and the specialist skills required.
CrowdStrike Falcon Cloud Security
The SANS 2024 survey chart lists Falcon Cloud Security among reported CNAPP solutions. Treat that as evidence of survey selection, not proof of market share or feature parity. Confirm the current module scope, licensing and integrations directly with the vendor.

What does the available adoption data actually show?
In the SANS 2024 survey chart’s CNAPP-vendor question, Microsoft Defender for Cloud was selected by 33% of respondents, CrowdStrike Falcon Cloud Security by 15% and Prisma Cloud by 10%. These are percentages of respondents selecting products in that survey question; they are not market-share estimates, revenue figures or proof that one product fits your environment.
How do I make the final decision?
Use the operating problem—not the product category—as the starting point.
- Choose a unified platform when fragmented visibility, duplicate findings and inconsistent ownership are slowing response, and leadership is willing to standardize policy, telemetry and remediation around one vendor.
- Choose separate tools when a specialist runtime or Kubernetes control is indispensable, your existing integration layer already correlates findings effectively, or you need incremental adoption with independent replacement options.
- Choose a hybrid transition when you need immediate CSPM visibility but require a specialist runtime control. Define the system of record, deduplication rules and ownership before adding the second product.
For either model, make the purchase contingent on a proof of concept using representative clouds, identities, IaC pipelines, Kubernetes workloads and controlled runtime incidents. The winning design is the one your teams can operate continuously, not merely demonstrate once.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can CSPM replace runtime protection?
No. CSPM identifies unsafe configuration and compliance conditions, while runtime protection observes active behavior and can detect exploitation or compromise after deployment. A posture fix may reduce exposure, but it does not prove that a running process is benign.
Does a CNAPP always include Kubernetes security?
No. Kubernetes coverage varies by product, edition and sensor. Ask specifically about control-plane visibility, admission control, image and configuration analysis, node and pod runtime telemetry, and response actions.
Will agentless cloud security detect an attack?
Agentless collection is excellent for inventory and configuration visibility, but it may not capture process, file or behavioral evidence available from a workload sensor. Determine which detections require an agent and what blind spots remain without one.
How can I avoid lock-in to a cloud security platform?
Require documented export formats, usable APIs, stable asset identifiers and an offboarding process during procurement. Keep ownership and remediation records in systems your organization controls rather than relying exclusively on a proprietary risk graph.
