Cloud-native segmentation uses the network constructs and policy controls of a cloud environment to create boundaries and regulate traffic. Microsegmentation is a finer-grained policy approach that restricts which individual workloads, applications, or services may communicate. They are not opposing product categories: cloud-native describes the control environment, while microsegmentation describes the scope and intent of the policy. A cloud design can therefore use cloud-native controls to implement microsegmentation.
The practical distinction matters when you design zero-trust access, contain lateral movement, or decide who owns a rule. Broad zones can reduce exposure between environments, but they rarely express which service actually needs to call another. Microsegmentation adds that communication-level precision, provided you can discover legitimate flows, identify workloads reliably, enforce rules at suitable points, and keep policies current as applications change.
What is the difference between cloud-native segmentation and microsegmentation?
Cloud-native segmentation organizes resources with cloud network boundaries and provider-supported controls; microsegmentation applies least-privilege communication rules at workload or service granularity. The first is primarily about where and with which cloud mechanisms traffic is controlled. The second is about how narrowly permitted communication is defined.
| Dimension | Cloud-native segmentation | Microsegmentation |
|---|---|---|
| Core idea | Use cloud network constructs and policies to separate resources and control traffic. | Define fine-grained permitted communication between workloads, services, or applications. |
| Typical scope | Often begins with broad boundaries between environments, teams, or resource groups; it can also carry detailed rules. | Targets individual workloads or services and limits unnecessary east-west communication. |
| Policy inputs | Cloud topology, subnet or network placement, firewall constructs, and other available attributes. | Network attributes combined with workload labels, application identity, service identity, or durable workload attributes. |
| Enforcement | Cloud network controls and provider-supported services, depending on the architecture. | Network, host, workload, gateway, service-mesh, or other policy-enforcement points. |
| Main operational concern | Correct tenant configuration and management of cloud-specific controls. | Discovering valid flows, writing least-privilege rules, and maintaining them as applications evolve. |
| Relationship | Can supply the environment and mechanisms used to enforce granular policies. | Can be implemented with cloud-native controls or with other enforcement patterns. |
Terminology varies by organization. NSA and CISA guidance commonly uses macro-segmentation for broad separation, while NIST SP 800-207A distinguishes coarse-grained network-tier policies from fine-grained network-tier policies and also discusses identity-tier policies. Treat the terms as dimensions that can be combined, not as mutually exclusive offerings.

What does cloud-native segmentation include?
Cloud-native segmentation is the use of controls available in a cloud tenant to establish trust boundaries and traffic paths. The exact controls depend on the provider and architecture, but the design usually combines virtual networks, subnets, routing, security groups or equivalent stateful rules, network firewalls, private connectivity, and policy attached to identities or resources.
Broad environment boundaries
A common starting point is to separate production, development, test, and management resources. Additional boundaries may isolate business units, regulated workloads, shared services, or separate deployment stages. These zones reduce accidental reachability and make it easier to apply different inspection, logging, and administrative policies.
Provider and customer responsibilities
Cloud providers may operate the underlying networking service, but the customer still configures the network inside its tenant. NSA and CISA’s March 7, 2024 guidance, Implement Network Segmentation and Encryption in Cloud Environments, emphasizes that a managed service does not remove the customer’s responsibility to define routes, rules, identities, and exposure correctly. A permissive rule or unintended route remains a customer configuration problem even when the platform is operated by someone else.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCloud-specific policy context
Cloud-native designs can use attributes that are difficult to express in a traditional fixed data center, such as resource tags, workload roles, account or subscription boundaries, and dynamically assigned service identities. Those attributes are useful only when they are consistently applied, protected from unauthorized change, and understood by the enforcement mechanism.
What is microsegmentation?
Microsegmentation is a policy approach that limits communication between individual workloads, applications, or services to what those components actually require. Instead of trusting everything inside a broad network zone, it evaluates each relevant flow and permits only the required source, destination, protocol, port, and identity combination.
East-west traffic is the central concern
North-south traffic crosses an organization’s perimeter, such as an internet request entering an application. East-west traffic moves between internal workloads: an API calling a database, a worker retrieving a queue message, or one service invoking another. NIST describes fine-grained policies that specify pathways into and out of services, including traffic inside a perimeter. Microsegmentation is intended to make those internal pathways explicit.
Identity can be part of the rule
Traditional rules often rely on IP addresses and subnets. Microsegmentation can add workload labels, application identity, service identity, device posture, or other durable attributes. This matters in elastic environments where instances are replaced and addresses change. NIST SP 800-207A’s cloud-native zero-trust model describes moving beyond network parameters alone toward application and service identities as part of access decisions.
Isolation is not an absolute barrier
Microsegmentation can improve visibility, reduce unnecessary reachability, and limit lateral movement if an account or workload is compromised. NIST SP 800-215 and CISA’s zero-trust microsegmentation guidance describe these as risk-reduction outcomes, not guarantees that an intrusion or breach cannot occur. A permitted path can still carry malicious activity, and a misclassified workload can still receive excessive access.

How do macro-segmentation and microsegmentation fit together?
Macro-segmentation creates the broad zones; microsegmentation governs the conversations inside and between those zones. A resilient design normally uses both: broad boundaries reduce the size of a trust domain, while fine-grained rules prevent every member of that domain from talking to every other member.
Example layered design
- Separate environments: place production and development in distinct network or account boundaries.
- Separate functions: within production, distinguish the public ingress tier, application tier, data tier, and management services.
- Define service paths: permit the public tier to call only the required application endpoints, and permit application workloads to reach only the databases, queues, or APIs they need.
- Restrict administration: allow management connections from approved administrative identities or paths rather than from every production subnet.
- Log decisions: record allowed and denied flows so an operator can verify that policy matches application behavior.
This layered approach avoids a false choice between “cloud-native” and “micro.” Cloud-native controls can implement the macro boundaries and, where their attributes and enforcement points are sufficiently expressive, the micro-level rules as well.
Which policy inputs should a design use?
Use network location as a useful signal, but avoid making it the only basis for trust. The strongest designs combine stable workload or service identity with the minimum network and context attributes needed for the decision.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Network attributes
Subnets, routes, security groups, network segments, source and destination addresses, ports, and protocols remain important for coarse boundaries and straightforward controls. They are easy to audit, but addresses can be reused and a subnet often contains workloads with different responsibilities.
Workload and application attributes
Labels, instance roles, service accounts, deployment metadata, namespaces, and application identities can express intent more directly. For these attributes to be trustworthy, the organization needs controlled provisioning, authenticated identity, protection against label tampering, and a process for handling unknown or unclassified workloads.
Identity-tier decisions
NIST’s model distinguishes network-tier policies from identity-tier policies. An identity-tier decision can evaluate who or what is requesting access, the target service, and the requested operation rather than inferring trust from location. This is especially useful when the same service runs across multiple networks or when traffic crosses regions and hosting environments.
Where can microsegmentation be enforced?
The enforcement point should match the traffic you need to control and the attributes available at that point. No single placement covers every path.

| Enforcement point | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud network boundary or security-group equivalent | Subnet, workload-group, ingress, and egress controls that the cloud platform natively understands. | May have limited application context and can become difficult to manage when rules are tied to changing addresses. |
| Network firewall or gateway | Central inspection, routed traffic, internet egress, and shared-service boundaries. | Central appliances or services can become bottlenecks and may not see traffic that stays local to a host or node. |
| Host or workload policy | Direct control of workload-to-workload flows, including paths that do not traverse a central gateway. | Requires reliable deployment, health monitoring, and compatibility with the operating system or runtime. |
| Service mesh or application proxy | Service-to-service calls where authenticated service identity and application-layer context are available. | Does not automatically govern non-mesh traffic, infrastructure protocols, or every side path. |
| API gateway or dedicated ingress component | North-south requests and controlled entry to application services. | Protects the entry path but does not by itself constrain all east-west communication after a request is admitted. |
Many architectures use several points together. Document which point is authoritative for each class of traffic and what happens when a component cannot evaluate the required identity.

How do you design cloud-native microsegmentation step by step?
Begin with visibility and useful broad boundaries, then narrow communication deliberately. The sequence below is a practical design method, not a vendor-specific deployment recipe.
- Inventory workloads and services. Record ownership, environment, data sensitivity, deployment method, runtime identity, and expected dependencies. Include managed services and administrative paths, not only virtual machines.
- Establish macro boundaries. Separate production, development, management, and other materially different trust domains with cloud-native network or account constructs. Remove routes that have no business purpose.
- Observe real flows. Collect flow logs, service telemetry, gateway records, and application dependency information over a representative operating period. Mark unknown, seasonal, and emergency traffic rather than silently treating it as required.
- Classify communications. For each dependency, identify source identity, destination identity, protocol, port, direction, data sensitivity, and business owner. Distinguish user requests, service calls, management access, monitoring, backup, and name-resolution traffic.
- Write least-privilege policies. Permit the narrowest source-to-destination path that supports the documented function. Prefer identity or durable workload attributes over individual addresses when the platform supports them.
- Choose enforcement points. Place controls where the needed traffic and context are visible. Use network boundaries for coarse isolation, workload or host policy for local east-west paths, and gateways or service meshes where application identity is required.
- Test in a non-disruptive mode. Start with logging, simulation, or alert-only behavior when available. Compare proposed denies with application owners’ dependency records and verify failure handling before enforcing a block.
- Roll out in stages. Apply policy to one service group, environment, or deployment wave at a time. Keep a documented emergency exception with an owner and expiration rather than creating permanent broad access.
- Monitor decisions and dependencies. Alert on unexpected allows, repeated denies, policy bypass attempts, and new identities. Retain enough context to explain why a flow was accepted or rejected.
- Review after every material change. New releases, autoscaling, migrations, mergers, and provider changes can invalidate assumptions. Treat policy as code or another controlled artifact with review, testing, and rollback.
How should you compare two segmentation approaches?
Compare the approaches against the same operational questions rather than asking which label is superior. A cloud-native design may be adequate for one boundary and insufficiently precise for another.
- Granularity: Does the policy separate environments and teams only, or can it express individual workload and service relationships?
- Enforcement visibility: Can the chosen control observe local east-west traffic, encrypted traffic, ingress, egress, and cross-network paths that matter to the application?
- Identity quality: Are rules based on stable application or service identity, or are they tied mainly to addresses and subnet placement?
- Change tolerance: What happens when instances are replaced, services scale, labels change, or a workload moves to another region?
- Observability: Can operators see the flow, the matched rule, the identity used, and the reason for a deny?
- Ownership: Which team creates, approves, deploys, and reviews each policy? Which controls are supplied by the provider and which remain the tenant’s responsibility?
- Failure behavior: Does an unavailable policy service fail open or fail closed, and is that behavior acceptable for the workload?
- Coverage: Are ingress, egress, east-west, management, backup, monitoring, and disaster-recovery paths all addressed?
What are the main benefits and limits?
Segmentation reduces unnecessary reachability and can shrink the blast radius of a compromised identity or workload. It does not replace secure software, strong authentication, patching, encryption, detection, or incident response.

- Smaller trust domains and fewer pathways for lateral movement.
- Clearer separation of regulated, production, development, and administrative resources.
- More precise control of service dependencies and east-west traffic.
- Better evidence for investigations when flow and policy decisions are logged.
- A way to express zero-trust intent without assuming that network location proves trust.
Limits and costs
- Incomplete discovery can cause outages when an undocumented dependency is blocked.
- Rules tied to ephemeral addresses become stale as workloads scale or move.
- Identity-based policy depends on accurate labeling, authentication, and lifecycle management.
- Central enforcement can add latency, capacity requirements, or a new failure domain.
- Encrypted or opaque traffic may limit inspection unless identity and telemetry are available elsewhere.
- Policy sprawl increases review effort and can make exceptions difficult to retire.
These trade-offs explain why a staged design is safer than an immediate “deny everything” rollout.
What common mistakes undermine segmentation?
Most failures are caused by inaccurate assumptions about traffic, identity, or ownership rather than by the absence of a particular control.
Calling a broad zone “microsegmentation”
A separate subnet or virtual network is a macro boundary. It becomes microsegmentation only when policy distinguishes the individual workloads or services and restricts their permitted communication accordingly.
Allowing an entire subnet for convenience
Wide source ranges hide which service actually needs access and allow unrelated workloads to inherit the same reachability. Replace the range with a workload group, service identity, or narrowly defined source set where practical.

Ignoring local east-west paths
A perimeter firewall cannot enforce a flow that never crosses it. Check node-local, same-subnet, overlay, service-mesh, and direct workload paths when selecting enforcement points.

Using unstable identity
IP addresses and instance names can change. Use authenticated identities and durable attributes, and test what happens when a workload is recreated or its metadata is missing.
Deploying enforcement before discovery
Start in observe or simulation mode when possible, involve application owners, and create an exception process with expiration. Otherwise teams often respond to outages by granting permanent broad access.
Assuming the provider owns the configuration
Managed networking does not mean the tenant’s routes, rules, identities, or logging are automatically correct. Assign explicit customer-side ownership and review permissions that can alter segmentation.
Promising breach prevention
Segmentation limits paths and can reduce impact; it cannot guarantee that an attacker will be stopped. Pair it with authentication, authorization, vulnerability management, endpoint controls, encryption, monitoring, and response procedures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does segmentation support zero-trust architecture?
Zero trust shifts protection toward resources and explicit access decisions rather than assuming that a network location is trustworthy. NIST’s Zero Trust Architecture page for SP 800-207 states: “Zero trust focus on protecting resources (assets, services, workflows, network accounts, etc.), not network segments, as the network location is no longer seen as the prime component of the security posture of the resource.”
Segmentation supports that model when it enforces a documented relationship between an authenticated requester and a specific resource. A subnet-only rule can still be useful for containment, but it should not be mistaken for complete zero-trust authorization. Identity-tier policies, application authorization, device or workload posture, and continuous telemetry may be needed in addition to network-tier controls.
Which approach should an organization choose?
Choose cloud-native segmentation as the foundation when you need cloud-specific boundaries, routing, and tenant-level control. Add microsegmentation where the risk or architecture requires service-level least privilege, especially for sensitive data, shared clusters, high-value control planes, and east-west paths that broad zones leave open.

The right answer is usually layered. Use broad cloud-native boundaries to establish a manageable architecture, then apply microsegmentation selectively where a documented dependency and risk assessment justify the additional policy and operational work.

What should you measure after deployment?
Measure whether the policy is accurate and useful, not merely how many rules exist. Useful operational indicators include:
- Percentage of workloads with an identified owner, environment, and enforced identity.
- Flows observed without a matching documented dependency.
- Denied connections that application owners confirm were unnecessary versus denied connections that caused incidents.
- Age, owner, and expiration status of exceptions.
- Coverage of east-west, ingress, egress, management, backup, and recovery traffic.
- Time required to investigate a policy decision from its logs and telemetry.
- Policy changes that pass automated validation before production deployment.
- Evidence that retired workloads, identities, and rules are removed promptly.
These measures reveal whether segmentation is reducing uncertainty and exposure or simply adding opaque configuration.
What do current official guides say about the terminology?
NSA and CISA’s March 2024 cloud guidance describes macro-segmentation, provider networking services, and the customer’s obligation to configure its tenant correctly. NIST SP 800-207A, published in September 2023, separates coarse- and fine-grained network-tier policies and discusses identity-tier policies for cloud-native applications. NIST SP 800-215, finalized November 17, 2022, covers microsegmentation, monitoring, lateral movement, and application identity. CISA announced the first part of its zero-trust microsegmentation guidance on July 29, 2025; the announcement describes its scope, so check the current CISA publication set before relying on a later part or technical detail. Microsoft Learn’s SASE and zero-trust material is useful as a secondary implementation explanation, but architecture still varies by organization.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can microsegmentation be implemented without a cloud provider?
Yes. Microsegmentation is a policy concept, so it can be enforced on hosts, workloads, gateways, service meshes, or other platforms in data centers and hybrid environments. Cloud-native controls are one implementation environment, not a prerequisite.
Does a firewall between subnets count as microsegmentation?
Only if its policy distinguishes the relevant workloads or services and permits narrowly defined communication. A rule that allows an entire subnet to reach another subnet is generally macro-segmentation, even when a firewall enforces it.
How often should microsegmentation rules be reviewed?
Review them whenever deployments, identities, data flows, or network architecture change, with a scheduled review for dormant rules and exceptions. The exact interval should match the application’s release cadence and risk, rather than a universal calendar period.
What happens when a workload has no recognized identity?
Treat it as an explicit exception or quarantine case, depending on business impact and risk. Do not silently fall back to broad network trust; investigate its provisioning, metadata, authentication, and ownership before granting access.
Can segmentation replace application-level authorization?
No. Network and workload policy controls reachability, while application authorization decides what an authenticated caller may do after connection. Sensitive operations generally need both layers, along with logging and monitoring.
The Bottom Line
Cloud-native segmentation is the cloud control environment and boundary model; microsegmentation is the fine-grained communication policy applied to workloads and services. Use them together: establish broad, well-owned cloud boundaries first, then enforce identity-aware least-privilege paths where east-west risk and application dependencies justify the operational effort.
