Cloud in a Bottle and Coolify are not interchangeable hosting products. Cloud in a Bottle is an opinionated personal-cloud environment with a catalog of one-click applications and a route for adding containerized apps. Coolify is a deployment control plane that manages applications, databases, and services on servers you provide. Choose Cloud in a Bottle if you want a guided personal-app catalog with less platform design work. Choose Coolify if you want a general Docker deployment dashboard and are comfortable operating the underlying Linux servers. The practical difference is who supplies the platform, how much infrastructure you operate, and whether your workloads match a catalog or require a flexible deployment layer.
What is the difference between Cloud in a Bottle and Coolify?
Cloud in a Bottle packages a personal-cloud experience; Coolify coordinates deployments. One starts with “which self-hosted apps do I want?” while the other starts with “which workloads do I need to run on my servers?” Treating them as competing versions of the same product leads to misleading cost and responsibility comparisons.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision point | Cloud in a Bottle | Coolify |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Personal-cloud environment with guided app installation | Deployment control plane for applications, databases, and services |
| Typical starting point | Select an app from a catalog, then install it | Choose a Git repository, Dockerfile, Compose file, or prebuilt image to deploy |
| Where workloads run | Your existing hardware, a cloud server, or an Imbue-managed instance | A server you supply; Docker runs workloads there |
| Operating model | More opinionated and app-oriented | More general and infrastructure-oriented |
| Project status stated by the project | In active development | Open-source and self-hostable, with a managed control-plane option |
The recommendation is therefore about fit, not a universal winner. A household that mainly wants a few familiar personal services can benefit from Cloud in a Bottle’s curated path. A technically confident operator running several custom containers, databases, or separate projects may value Coolify’s broader deployment model more.
What does Cloud in a Bottle provide?
Cloud in a Bottle says it gives you a server you control and applications that install in one click. Its catalog examples include Nextcloud for file collaboration, Jellyfin for media, VaultWarden for password management, SearXNG for search, Forgejo for code hosting, and Uptime Kuma for monitoring. The catalog is the product’s defining convenience: you begin with a known application rather than designing every container and connection yourself.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do custom applications work?
The project also describes a path for adding a containerized application from a Git repository. A small configuration file defines the application, and an optional Dockerfile can be used when the repository needs a custom image build. That gives you an escape hatch when your required service is not in the catalog, while retaining the platform’s personal-cloud orientation.
What should you know about project maturity?
Cloud in a Bottle describes itself as being in active development and uses the AGPL-3.0 license. “Active development” is useful context for a self-hosting decision: features, installation behavior, and catalog coverage can change more quickly than they would in a mature, frozen appliance. Check the project’s current documentation and release state before committing important data.
How does Coolify deploy applications?
Coolify is a self-hostable, open-source deployment platform. It can deploy from a Git repository, Dockerfile, Compose file, or prebuilt container image. Coolify coordinates setup and deployment actions over SSH; Docker then runs the resulting workloads on the connected server. This makes Coolify a control layer rather than the place where your application data automatically lives.
What is the difference between Coolify self-hosted and Coolify Cloud?
With self-hosted Coolify, you install the control plane yourself. With Coolify Cloud, the vendor operates the Coolify control plane as a managed service. In both models, you still provide the workload server that runs your applications, databases, and services.
Coolify’s onboarding material makes the responsibility boundary explicit. You remain responsible for the workload server’s operating system, firewall, application and database data, and workload backups. Paying for Coolify Cloud does not transfer those duties to the managed control plane.
How much do Cloud in a Bottle and Coolify cost?
Compare the complete operating arrangement, not just the line item that carries the product name. Cloud in a Bottle’s managed offer includes a provisioned instance. Coolify Cloud charges for the control plane, while you pay separately for the server that runs workloads. Self-hosting either product can use hardware you already own, but the cash saving comes with setup and maintenance work.

Cloud in a Bottle managed-hosting plans
The following prices were listed on the Cloud in a Bottle and Imbue offer pages on October 25, 2026. The pages describe different introductory free periods by tier and usage-based billing while the space is running; confirm the live offer before subscribing.
| Tier | Included resources | Published monthly price | Simple annualized rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 2 GB RAM, 2 vCPU, 40 GB disk | $5 per month | $60 per year at the stated monthly rate |
| Medium | 4 GB RAM, 3 vCPU, 80 GB disk | $10 per month | $120 per year at the stated monthly rate |
| Large | 8 GB RAM, 4 vCPU, 160 GB disk | $20 per month | $240 per year at the stated monthly rate |
The home page advertises managed hosting from $5 per month. The tier sizes and prices are product-published commercial figures, not independent performance measurements. Storage, CPU, and memory in the table describe the managed instance; they do not prove that every possible app combination will fit comfortably.
Coolify pricing
| Coolify route | Platform fee | Server cost | Who operates the workload server? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted Coolify | No Coolify license fee | Paid by you, unless you use hardware you already own | You |
| Coolify Cloud | $5 per month for up to two connected servers; $3 per month for each additional server | Paid separately by you | You |
At the published Coolify Cloud base rate, the control-plane subscription is $60 per year before any server, storage, bandwidth, backup, or workload-specific expense. That is not an equivalent quote to a $5 Cloud in a Bottle managed instance because the latter includes a provisioned instance. A fair budget lists the platform fee, compute, disk, network transfer, backups, and any extra resources required by your applications.
What hardware and operating-system resources are required?
Coolify’s self-hosting guide lists a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of free disk for the Coolify instance itself. It supports amd64 and arm64 architectures on a Linux-based operating system. The guide cautions that additional resources are needed as workloads grow.
Those numbers are a control-plane minimum, not a recommended size for a server running several applications, a database, and media processing. A media library, search index, code forge, or multiple databases can need substantially more capacity than the platform alone. Size the machine for the workloads and their peaks, then leave headroom for updates and temporary build files.
Cloud in a Bottle describes three infrastructure routes: an old laptop or desktop, a Raspberry Pi, a cloud server from a provider of your choice, or Imbue-managed hosting. Cloud in a Bottle’s listed infrastructure routes do not prescribe a particular hardware model. If you already own a compatible Linux machine, buying a mini PC is optional rather than a requirement.

Which platform fits your personal-cloud goals?
Use the workload and operations questions below before choosing. The right answer depends less on brand preference than on the amount of infrastructure you want to manage.
Choose Cloud in a Bottle when you want a guided catalog
- Your priority is quickly installing familiar personal services such as file sync, media streaming, password management, search, code hosting, or uptime monitoring.
- You prefer an opinionated environment over designing a deployment structure for every app.
- You want a choice between spare home hardware, a server you rent, and a managed instance.
- The apps you need are already in the catalog, or your custom workload can be described with the project’s repository configuration and optional Dockerfile path.
- You accept that the project identifies itself as being in active development.
Choose Coolify when you want a general deployment dashboard
- You deploy your own Git projects, Dockerfiles, Compose stacks, or prebuilt images rather than selecting only from a fixed catalog.
- You need one control plane for multiple applications, databases, or services on servers you control.
- You are comfortable administering Linux, SSH access, Docker, firewalls, storage, and backups.
- You want to choose between running the control plane yourself and paying for Coolify Cloud while still operating the workload servers.
- You can budget infrastructure separately from the Coolify subscription.
When neither choice is automatically better
If your only goal is one application, either platform may add more operational surface than you need. Conversely, a large multi-service installation can outgrow the smallest managed tier or the Coolify minimum quickly. List every intended workload, its persistent data, and its peak resource needs before committing to a plan.
How do you plan a Cloud in a Bottle installation?
The installation path is conceptually simple, but the infrastructure and data decisions still belong to you. Use this sequence to avoid choosing a plan before you know what you will run.
- Inventory the apps. Check whether your required services appear in the catalog. Separate catalog apps from workloads you would add from a Git repository.
- Pick the hosting route. Decide between an old laptop or desktop, a Raspberry Pi, a rented cloud server, and Imbue-managed hosting. For home hardware, account for power, noise, network reachability, and hardware failure.
- Size storage and memory. Compare your data volume and workload mix with the managed tier resources. Media files and databases consume space independently of the platform.
- Install the platform on the chosen server. Follow the current project documentation for the supported operating system and installation method. Installation details can change while the project is in active development.
- Deploy catalog applications first. Add one service at a time, verify that it starts, and confirm where its persistent data is stored before adding another workload.
- Add a custom container only when needed. Use the documented Git-repository configuration and optional Dockerfile path. Keep the configuration with the repository so you can reproduce it after a rebuild.
- Test access and recovery. Confirm local and remote access as appropriate, record credentials securely, and perform a restore test before treating the installation as your only copy of important data.
The last step matters regardless of which platform you select. A one-click installation reduces setup effort; it does not remove the need to understand data locations, updates, and recovery.
How do you plan a Coolify deployment?
Coolify separates the control plane from the machine that runs workloads. Plan both before you create the first project.
- Choose self-hosted or Coolify Cloud. Self-hosted avoids a Coolify license fee but makes you operate the control plane. Coolify Cloud manages that control plane while leaving workload-server operations with you.
- Provision a Linux workload server. For the Coolify instance itself, the published minimum is 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB free disk on amd64 or arm64. Add capacity for every application, database, build, and data set you intend to run.
- Prepare administrative access. Coolify performs setup and deployment actions over SSH, so the server must be reachable with the access method required by the current onboarding instructions.
- Connect the server to Coolify. Treat the connected machine as the place where Docker workloads and persistent data live, even when the control plane is managed in the cloud.
- Select the workload source. Deploy from a Git repository, Dockerfile, Compose file, or prebuilt image. Choose the format that matches how your project is already built and maintained.
- Allocate resources per workload. Keep database and application data on storage that is sized for growth. Do not interpret the 10 GB platform minimum as a total-server recommendation.
- Document backups and updates. Coolify’s published responsibility boundary leaves operating-system maintenance, firewall configuration, application data, database data, and workload backups with you.
This workflow is powerful because it is not tied to a personal-app catalog. The trade-off is that more of the design and maintenance decisions remain yours.

Who is responsible for updates, security, and backups?
The platform choice changes where the boundary sits; neither option makes operational responsibility disappear.
| Responsibility | Cloud in a Bottle implication | Coolify implication |
|---|---|---|
| Platform installation | You install on your hardware or server, or use the managed route | You install self-hosted Coolify, or the control plane is managed through Coolify Cloud |
| Workload host | Your hardware, your rented server, or the managed instance selected from the offer | A server you supply for workloads in either self-hosted or Cloud mode |
| Operating system and network | Depends on the route; home and bring-your-own-server users operate their host | The user remains responsible for the workload server OS and firewall |
| Application and database data | You must understand and protect data created by installed apps | The user remains responsible for application and database data |
| Backups and restore testing | You must arrange and test them for your chosen host and apps | The user remains responsible for workload backups and their restoration |
Cloud in a Bottle’s managed offer provides a provisioned instance, but Cloud in a Bottle’s published material does not establish a complete service-level guarantee for uptime, support response, or backup quality. Coolify’s managed control plane likewise does not include responsibility for your workload data. In both cases, maintain an independent backup and verify that a restore works.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the biggest mistakes when comparing these products?
Comparing a bundled instance with a control-plane fee
A $5 managed Cloud in a Bottle tier and a $5 Coolify Cloud subscription do not buy the same thing. The former lists CPU, memory, and disk for a provisioned instance; the latter covers the Coolify control plane for up to two connected servers. Add the workload-server bill before deciding which arrangement costs less.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Treating the Coolify minimum as a full workload specification
Two cores, 2 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of free disk are stated for the Coolify instance itself. Running several services, a database, or media workloads requires additional capacity. Start with a workload inventory rather than sizing from the minimum.
Assuming a catalog and a deployment platform are the same abstraction
Cloud in a Bottle’s catalog can shorten the path from an empty server to a useful personal service. Coolify’s value is flexibility across deployment formats and servers. If you need a catalog workflow, a general control plane may feel like extra design work; if you need custom stacks, a fixed catalog may become a constraint.
Ignoring project maturity and change
Cloud in a Bottle explicitly says it is in active development. That can be attractive for a fast-moving project, but it means you should keep configuration and data backups, read upgrade notes, and avoid assuming that today’s catalog or setup screens will remain unchanged.

Forgetting the physical host
An old laptop, desktop, or Raspberry Pi can reduce cash cost, but it still needs reliable storage, power, cooling, network access, and a recovery plan. A rented server removes some hardware chores but introduces a recurring infrastructure bill and provider dependency.

Is Cloud in a Bottle or Coolify better for a first personal cloud?
For a first personal cloud built around well-known self-hosted apps, Cloud in a Bottle is the more direct starting point because its catalog and one-click workflow reduce deployment decisions. For a first project that is really a collection of your own Docker workloads, Coolify is the better conceptual match, provided you are ready to run the underlying Linux server.
Neither conclusion is a performance benchmark. The published product information does not establish equivalent uptime, security results, support response times, backup quality, or total cost for a particular workload. Make the final choice from your app list, server route, data volume, and willingness to operate the host.
What is the final decision rule?
Choose Cloud in a Bottle when the catalog contains your priority apps and you want a guided personal-cloud environment on spare hardware, a rented server, or a managed instance. Choose Coolify when you need a general deployment control plane for Git, Dockerfile, Compose, or image-based workloads and accept responsibility for the workload servers. If your comparison is based only on the advertised monthly fee, stop and recalculate: the products charge for different layers of the hosting stack.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move an existing Cloud in a Bottle app to Coolify with one click?
The published product material does not document a one-click migration path between the two platforms. Plan for a workload-by-workload move: preserve each app’s data with its supported export or backup method, recreate the deployment in the destination platform, and verify the restore before switching users over.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes a Coolify Cloud subscription include the server that runs my apps?
No. Coolify Cloud provides the managed Coolify control plane. You still supply and pay for the workload server, and you remain responsible for its operating system, firewall, application data, database data, and backups.
Is a Raspberry Pi powerful enough for Cloud in a Bottle?
Cloud in a Bottle lists Raspberry Pi devices as an example of existing hardware, but the supplied material gives no universal performance guarantee or model recommendation. Suitability depends on the apps, storage, users, and media or database workload you plan to run.
Do the advertised prices guarantee uptime or backup service?
No such guarantee is established by the published material summarized here. Cloud in a Bottle’s managed page lists tier resources and prices, while Coolify documents the user’s responsibility for workload backups; obtain current service terms and test your own restore process.
