Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes is the closest technical 2D substitute for Avatar Legends on Nintendo Switch 2, while Melty Blood: Type Lumina is the better match for fast aerial anime combat. Choose Street Fighter 6 if native Switch 2 software, beginner-friendly controls and a large solo mode matter most. Dragon Ball FighterZ delivers licensed animated spectacle through 3-on-3 assists, whereas Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are cartoon platform fighters rather than mechanical equivalents. All compatibility statements below reflect Nintendo listings checked in October 2026; a Switch game marked supported on Switch 2 is not automatically a native Switch 2 edition.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes Closest technical 2D training candidate 24 fighters, simple inputs, rollback Nintendo Switch game; supported on Switch 2 Oct 2026

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 Familiar cartoon characters and a campaign Character-themed brawling, supers, solo campaign Nintendo Switch game; supported on Switch 2 Oct 2026
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Broad local party-fighting appeal Stage-based knockouts and a huge crossover roster Nintendo Switch game; supported on Switch 2 Oct 2026

Nintendo’s compatibility label describes how a Switch release behaves on Switch 2; it does not prove that the software is a native Switch 2 build. Confirm the edition shown in the eShop or on a physical package before buying.

What makes Avatar Legends different from an ordinary fighting game?

Avatar Legends is a hand-drawn, one-on-one fighter built around 12 playable characters. Its defining systems are Flow movement, Energy Points and a choice of three support characters for each fighter. The Nintendo Switch listing includes Story, Arcade, Training, local versus and online versus modes. That combination makes “similar” more specific than sharing an animated art style: the closest alternatives should be judged by 2D neutral play, movement options, training depth, assists or support mechanics, and how a newcomer learns the controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Traditional match format: Avatar uses one fighter against one opponent, not a tag team or a stage-ring-out ruleset.
  • Resource management: Flow and Energy Points affect decisions in a way that is distinct from a conventional super meter.
  • Support choice: Selecting one of three helpers adds a tactical layer, but it is not the same as a full 3v3 tag system.
  • Modes for learning: Training, Arcade and Story give different reasons to play beyond ranked competition.

These details explain why a game can be a good alternative without reproducing Avatar’s exact mechanics. The recommendations below identify what transfers and what does not.

Which fighting game is closest to Avatar Legends on Switch 2?

Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes is the strongest starting point for players who want a serious 2D, one-on-one fighter with a substantial roster and tools for learning. Melty Blood: Type Lumina comes next when fast movement and aerial routes are more important than matching Avatar’s support selection.

1. Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes — best technical 2D alternative

Under Night II is the closest overall fit because its core appeal is technical 2D one-on-one play rather than party brawling. Nintendo’s US listing describes 24 fighters, beginner-friendly simple inputs and rollback netcode. Those features give a new player a manageable entry point while leaving room to study spacing, confirms and matchup-specific decisions.

The overlap with Avatar is structural, not literal. Both belong in the traditional 1v1 lane, but Under Night II does not document Avatar’s Flow movement, Energy Points or selectable support-character system. Its 24-character count also describes the listed edition; check the current product page for any downloadable-content or roster changes before treating it as a complete, permanent total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose it if: you want a deep training candidate, simple-input options and rollback-supported online play.
  • Expect instead of Avatar’s supports: a conventional fighter’s own move set and resource decisions, not a helper chosen before each match.
  • Switch 2 status: Nintendo lists the Switch version as supported on Switch 2, not as a native Switch 2 release.

2. Melty Blood: Type Lumina — best for aerial anime-style combat

Melty Blood: Type Lumina is the better choice for players drawn to rapid anime exchanges, jumping attacks and combo routes that leave the ground. Its documented systems include Aerial Combos, Shields, Moon Skill, simple controls and rollback. Those mechanics make it an appealing follow-up when Avatar’s animated presentation is less important than speed and mobility.

Moon Skill should not be treated as Avatar’s support selection. It is a character-system mechanic, while Avatar lets each fighter choose among three support characters. The games therefore share an energetic 2D feel but ask you to make different tactical choices.

  • Choose it if: aerial movement, quick confirms and anime-style momentum are your priority.
  • Learning advantage: simple controls lower the barrier to trying advanced movement and combo ideas.
  • Switch 2 status: Nintendo marks the Switch edition supported on Switch 2; the listing does not establish a native Switch 2 build.

3. Street Fighter 6 — best native Switch 2 and newcomer package

Street Fighter 6 is the recommendation when the console edition and the solo experience matter more than matching Avatar’s systems. Capcom announced its native Switch 2 launch for June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s listing presents Classic, Modern and Dynamic control schemes, World Tour and local-wireless one-on-one play. This gives a first-time fighter several ways to begin and a substantial exploration mode outside versus matches.

Modern controls are designed to reduce the execution burden, while Classic preserves a traditional command layout. Dynamic controls are intended for assisted local play. None of these schemes reproduces Flow or Energy Points, and Street Fighter’s Drive Gauge is a different resource model. Nintendo’s current base-game description names 18 fighters; that is not a claim about every downloadable character available for purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose it if: native Switch 2 software, a guided solo journey and flexible control choices outrank mechanical similarity.
  • Local play: the listing specifies local-wireless one-on-one play, useful for two nearby Switch 2 systems.
  • Roster caution: treat 18 as the base-game figure in Nintendo’s description, not a complete DLC-inclusive total.

4. Dragon Ball FighterZ — best for licensed anime spectacle and team assists

Dragon Ball FighterZ captures the feeling of an animated action series through 3v3 tag battles, support assists, ranked play and a story mode. If what you want from Avatar is recognizable characters, dramatic special moves and helpers affecting the fight, this is the most direct licensed-anime alternative.

The format is a major change: you select a team of three and tag between them, whereas Avatar is a 1v1 game with one chosen support character. Team construction, assist timing and preserving the health of your remaining characters replace the simpler single-fighter decision loop. That makes FighterZ a spectacle-focused alternative, not a mechanical duplicate.

  • Choose it if: team strategy and animated presentation are more important than one-on-one purity.
  • Solo content: the documented story mode gives you a campaign-style route in addition to ranked matches.
  • Switch 2 status: Nintendo lists the Switch version as supported on Switch 2.

5. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 — best cartoon roster with a campaign

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is for players who want familiar cartoon characters, character-themed attacks, supers and a solo campaign. It belongs to the platform-fighter category: positioning around stages and launching opponents are central, rather than winning a traditional health-bar exchange.

That distinction matters for an Avatar fan. The visual language may feel familiar, but platform-fighter movement, recovery and edge positioning create a different skill set from Flow-based 1v1 combat. It is a good pick for family sessions or a campaign-first player, not the first recommendation for someone seeking Avatar’s neutral game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose it if: recognizable cartoon properties and a campaign are the main draw.
  • Expect: stage movement, supers and platform-fighter knockouts instead of conventional rounds.
  • Switch 2 status: Nintendo marks the Switch game supported on Switch 2.

6. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — best broad local party fighter

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the strongest local party option in this group. Its central rule is to knock opponents off stages, so damage percentages, recovery and stage control matter more than reducing a rival’s life bar through traditional rounds.

That makes it fundamentally different from Avatar’s one-on-one exchanges, even when both games feature colorful characters and accessible local play. Choose it for variety, a broad crossover roster and multiplayer gatherings, not because its neutral game mirrors Flow or its support system.

  • Choose it if: you want flexible local matches and a party-friendly ruleset.
  • Expect: platform recovery, edge-guarding and stage hazards as core skills.
  • Switch 2 status: Nintendo lists the Switch version as supported on Switch 2.

How we picked

The ranking weighs five practical questions: how closely each game stays to traditional 1v1 play; whether movement or aerial combos resemble the appeal of Avatar; how approachable the controls and training tools are; whether solo and local/online modes are documented; and whether Nintendo identifies the edition as native Switch 2 software or merely compatible. Licensed presentation and party appeal matter, but they do not override a major ruleset difference.

Which games are native Switch 2 releases, and which are compatible Switch games?

Street Fighter 6 is the native Switch 2 release in this shortlist. Under Night In-Birth II, Melty Blood: Type Lumina, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are Switch games that Nintendo currently marks supported on Switch 2. That distinction affects how you interpret feature claims, upgrades and packaging.

Avatar Legends edition timing

Nintendo’s Switch listing gives the original release date as July 23, 2026 and displays the compatibility sentence: “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” A separate publisher announcement, reproduced by WorthPlaying on October 28, 2026, scheduled a native Switch 2 edition for October 29 at 9 a.m. PT. The same report described a free upgrade for existing Switch owners as “coming soon,” not as an upgrade already confirmed in the listing.

Before purchasing, open the exact native Switch 2 store entry or verify the package label. Do not infer native performance, an upgrade entitlement or identical save behavior from the backward-compatibility badge alone. Physical Standard and Deluxe editions were announced for the Switch 2 version, but that announcement does not establish current stock for a particular retailer.

Why the distinction changes a buying decision

  • Native software: specifically built and marketed for Switch 2, as with Street Fighter 6.
  • Compatible software: a Switch release that Nintendo says runs consistently on Switch 2.
  • Edition mismatch risk: a Switch box, digital listing or upgrade note may refer to a different entitlement than the one you intend to buy.
  • Freshness: compatibility notices and upgrade policies can change after patches, so check Nintendo’s current listing on purchase day.

What do you need for local and online Avatar-style play?

For Avatar’s local matches, Nintendo’s listing specifies one or two players on one system. Online play requires a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Comparable alternatives may have their own account, subscription and controller requirements, so verify the individual listing rather than assuming Avatar’s requirements apply to every game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a one-system session

  1. Install the same game edition on the console and update it before inviting another player.
  2. Open the game’s local versus or equivalent mode; platform fighters may use a different rules menu than traditional fighters.
  3. Pair or assign a second controller and confirm whether the game supports one or two players on one system in its current listing.
  4. For Avatar, choose each fighter and the support character before starting the match; for a tag game, build the full team instead.

For online matches

  1. Sign in with a Nintendo Account on the console profile you will use.
  2. Maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online membership where the listing requires one.
  3. Use Training mode first to map buttons, practice a basic punish and learn how the chosen game handles blocking, jumping and resources.
  4. Check the game’s current online and compatibility notices if matchmaking or progression behaves unexpectedly after an update.

No comparable evidence establishes cross-play across these games, their current matchmaking populations or equal rollback quality. Treat online features as title-specific rather than transferable assumptions.

Is Guilty Gear -Strive- a safe Switch 2 recommendation?

Not while Nintendo’s current status remains unchanged. Guilty Gear -Strive- Switch Edition advertises rollback, 28 playable characters and cinematic story content, which would otherwise make it a plausible alternative. Nintendo currently labels it unsupported on Switch 2 because of game-progression problems, so it should stay out of a Switch 2 shortlist until Nintendo posts a fresh compatibility change.

This is a live-status issue, not a judgment on the game’s design. Recheck Nintendo’s notice before revisiting it; an updated compatibility label could change the recommendation later.

What should you check before buying a physical copy?

Search for the exact platform wording on the package or store page. “Nintendo Switch” and “supported on Switch 2” indicate the original Switch edition unless the listing explicitly identifies a native Switch 2 edition. For Avatar, the publisher announced physical Standard and Deluxe editions alongside the Switch 2 version, but availability and retailer inventory were not established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm whether the box says Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.
  • Read the upgrade language for an existing Switch purchase; “coming soon” is not a delivered entitlement.
  • Check that the listed modes match your plan: local versus, online versus, Story or training.
  • Look at Nintendo’s latest compatibility notice immediately before checkout.

An optional fight pad can be useful for local matches, but no specific accessory model or compatibility certification is established for this shortlist. Use the controller that the game and console officially recognize rather than relying on a generic product claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Avatar Legends support cross-play with other consoles?

The Switch listing establishes local and online modes but does not establish cross-play with other console or PC versions. Treat cross-platform matchmaking as unconfirmed unless the current Nintendo listing or a publisher notice states it explicitly.

What does Nintendo’s “Supported” label mean for a Switch game on Switch 2?

It means Nintendo has identified the Switch software as behaving consistently with Nintendo Switch on Switch 2. It is a backward-compatibility statement, not proof of a native Switch 2 build, enhanced resolution or a free upgrade.

Can I learn fighting-game fundamentals without using a traditional arcade controller?

Yes. Under Night II and Melty Blood document simple-input options, and Street Fighter 6 offers Modern and Dynamic control schemes. A standard Joy-Con or Pro Controller can therefore be a practical starting point, although button layouts and comfort vary by player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which recommendation is best for two people sharing one console?

Avatar’s Nintendo listing specifies one or two players on one system, making it suitable for a direct local duel. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 are better when the group wants platform-fighter rules or larger party-style sessions rather than a strict 1v1 match.
