Clayface is a committed, often gleefully disgusting body-horror film that gives the DCU a genuinely different texture. Tom Rhys Harries carries it as doomed actor Matt Hagen, while director James Watkins delivers memorable practical gore and a standout nightclub sequence. The trade-off is an underdeveloped tragedy: the script turns Hagen’s identity crisis into a familiar revenge route, leaves its beauty and body-dysmorphia ideas at the surface, and builds a Gotham that feels more “Joker-lite” than singular. At 108 minutes, the film is an entertaining horror experiment, but its shocks land more reliably than its emotional or thematic ambitions.
What is Clayface about?
Matt Hagen is a rising Hollywood actor whose affair with crime boss Markos Szabo’s girlfriend ends with Hagen’s face being slashed. Outcast scientist Dr. Caitlyn Corr uses experimental nanocell surgery to reconstruct him, but the treatment destabilizes his grasp on reality. Hagen’s attempted comeback mutates into a shapeshifting revenge quest, putting a performer obsessed with his own face at the center of the DCU’s first outright horror film.
James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also credited for the story. The principal cast includes Naomi Ackie as Corr, David Dencik as Szabo, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. GamesRadar+ lists the running time as 108 minutes and the theatrical opening as October 23, 2026.

Yes. Harries is the film’s strongest element and its clearest argument for watching. He makes Hagen’s vanity, fear and humiliation legible before the transformation, then carries the increasingly unstable physicality after the surgery. The performance gives the creature a person to lose, even when the screenplay stops examining that loss.

Hagen’s shifting face could have reduced the character to effects work. Harries instead keeps the actor’s need for recognition visible inside the monster’s movements and vocal choices. That control is why the film can feel tragic in individual scenes despite losing focus across the full revenge plot.
How effective and inventive is the body horror?
The physical horror is where Clayface most consistently delivers. Watkins uses a tight, suffocating camera style and practical, gory effects to make Hagen’s condition feel tactile rather than merely digital. The film’s most vivid scare comes during a failed-treatment sequence involving plane turbulence and travel scissors, a nasty escalation that turns ordinary objects into threats.
The Vesuvius nightclub sequence
A mutated Hagen moving through the Vesuvius nightclub undetected is the movie’s most inventive set piece. Shapeshifting becomes a social-stealth problem: he must read a crowd, borrow identities and move through danger without revealing what he has become. The sequence has the procedural tension of Hitman or Trap, while still exploiting the grotesque possibilities of a body that will not stay fixed.

These scenes explain the film’s appeal as a superhero-horror ride. They are playful, mean and visually committed, even when the surrounding story does not match their imagination.
Does the film explore beauty standards and body dysmorphia deeply?
Not deeply enough. Hagen’s career and the nanocell procedure create an obvious route into Hollywood beauty standards, cosmetic surgery and body dysmorphia, but the screenplay mostly uses those ideas as motivation for the next act. The film recognizes the connection between an actor’s market value and his face without fully tracing how that pressure shapes Hagen’s relationships or self-image.
Corr’s romance with Hagen is similarly functional. It supplies intimacy and opportunities for bloody set dressing, yet it rarely becomes an equal emotional perspective on the transformation. The result is a film that gestures toward a richer tragedy while prioritizing momentum and spectacle.

How well do the supporting characters and Gotham work?
The supporting cast gives the story recognizable faces, but most of those characters are sketched around Hagen’s arc rather than developed alongside it. Szabo’s role in the inciting violence is clear; Corr’s scientific and personal stakes are less fully explored. That imbalance makes the revenge trail feel predictable once Hagen’s internal conflict is pushed aside.
Gotham also falls short of the setting’s potential. Instead of a diseased, decaying city with its own social logic, the film presents a tawdry environment that can feel “Joker-lite.” The DCU connection is strongest in the premise and tone, not in a distinctive sense of place. Uneven CGI further weakens some of the wider world-building, especially when digital imagery has to carry what the practical effects handle so well in close-up.
How does Clayface compare across the four things viewers care about?
| Axis | What works | What limits it |
|---|---|---|
| Harries’s performance | A starmaking lead performance that keeps Hagen human inside the mutation. | The script gives his internal conflict less room as the revenge plot takes over. |
| Body-horror set pieces | Practical gore, claustrophobic camerawork, the travel-scissors scare and the Vesuvius stealth sequence. | Uneven CGI occasionally undercuts the physical immediacy. |
| Beauty and body-dysmorphia themes | The actor’s face, surgery and career create a strong foundation. | The film only skims Hollywood beauty standards and cosmetic-pressure consequences. |
| Gotham and DCU world-building | A malleable, R-rated horror identity distinct from standard superhero fare. | Gotham feels generic and “Joker-lite,” while side characters remain thin. |
Is Clayface worth watching?
It is worth watching if you want a DC film that commits to grotesque transformation, practical gore and a lead actor willing to make physical instability the center of a performance. Viewers seeking a carefully developed tragedy about image, surgery and self-worth may find the film frustratingly safe. GamesRadar+ senior entertainment writer Bradley Russell captures the balance by describing Harries’s Matt Hagen and the squeamish sequences as unable to completely cover a “so-so script” and surface-level treatment of the subject matter.

The film’s lasting importance is tonal rather than narrative. By choosing body horror and unstable identity over conventional heroics, it suggests a DCU whose strength may lie in its malleability. Clayface is therefore more successful as a freakishly entertaining horror experiment than as the fully realized tragedy its premise promises.

Is Clayface a conventional superhero movie?
No. Its central engine is body horror: surgery, unstable identity and grotesque transformation rather than a standard heroic origin. The DCU framework remains, but the film is built to unsettle viewers more than to deliver familiar capes-and-powers adventure.
