There is no universal winner. Choose Claude when you need a developer-controlled browser executor or a Chrome agent that can use existing logins; choose OpenAI when a hosted virtual browser and published WebArena/WebVoyager results fit your workflow; choose Gemini when you want to program a screenshot-to-action loop across browser, mobile, and desktop environments. Reliability depends more on the task, model version, executor, credentials and approval policy than on the assistant’s name.

The practical comparison therefore has four parts: who runs the browser, how sensitive actions are approved, whether authenticated and dynamic pages are supported, and how the assistant performs on a benchmark resembling your work. The figures below are useful reference points, not a universal league table.

Which AI assistant is best for browser automation?

For most teams, the best choice follows the execution model rather than a headline benchmark. Claude’s API browser-use tool gives an application control over the browser and credentials, while Claude in Chrome is a paid-plan consumer agent that can work across tabs and existing logins. OpenAI offers both a programmable computer-using model and hosted options such as ChatGPT agent and cloud browser. Gemini Computer Use is an API building block: your code executes each action and returns the next screenshot.

Best fit Why it fits Main responsibility
Claude browser-use API Browser-native interaction with an executor your team controls Build and secure the browser runner, validation, logging and recovery
Claude in Chrome Consumer workflows across tabs and sites where you already sign in Review safety prompts and supervise consequential actions
OpenAI hosted agent or cloud browser Managed virtual-browser workflows with screenshot interaction and takeover Confirm sensitive steps and verify rollout, plan and regional availability
OpenAI CUA in your application Programmable screen, mouse and keyboard control with published web-task results Provide an execution environment and handle failures securely
Gemini Computer Use One action loop that can target browser, mobile or desktop clients Execute function calls, capture screenshots and enforce safety decisions

Run a small pilot on your own task family before committing. A checkout assistant, an internal CRM workflow and a public research task exercise different capabilities, so a result from one should not decide the others.

How does Claude automate a browser?

Claude has two materially different browser experiences. The API browser-use tool operates inside a browser supplied by your application; Claude in Chrome is an end-user agent that operates in the Chrome browser.

What happens with Claude’s browser-use API?

Anthropic describes the tool as letting Claude “navigate, read, and interact with webpages in your own browser environment.” Your application launches or connects to the browser, sends Claude the available page state, and receives actions that use accessibility-tree references, screenshots or coordinates. The executor performs those actions and returns the resulting page state for the next turn.

This arrangement is valuable when you need control over network access, cookies, credential injection, audit logs, browser version and action policy. It also means the engineering work is yours. You must implement the loop, detect stale page references, manage waits for dynamic content, cap retries and decide which actions require a person’s approval.

What can Claude in Chrome do?

Anthropic’s August 26, 2026 announcement says Claude in Chrome is generally available on paid Claude plans. It can work across tabs, use existing logins and take autonomous actions after a safety classifier validates each action. Availability and behavior can vary by plan and rollout, so verify the current account and workspace settings before standardizing on it.

Using an existing signed-in session reduces setup for tasks such as collecting information from several work portals or moving data between tabs. It also increases the impact of a mistake: the agent may be able to see private records or submit changes under your identity. Keep the browser profile separate from personal browsing, limit the sites it can reach and require confirmation for sending, purchasing, deleting or publishing.

Where does Claude usually fit best?

  • Controlled automation: teams that want their own browser container, credentials boundary and logs.
  • Authenticated research: users who need an agent to work across already-open tabs and signed-in services.
  • Accessibility-heavy pages: workflows where semantic page references are more stable than guessing pixel locations.

The trade-off is operational complexity in the API mode and plan-dependent availability in Chrome. Neither mode removes the need to treat page text, uploaded files and embedded instructions as untrusted input.

How does OpenAI approach browser automation?

OpenAI’s Computer-Using Agent (CUA) uses a general screen, mouse and keyboard interface. In hosted products, a virtual browser supplies screenshots and the agent navigates, clicks and fills forms; a user can take over for sensitive steps. In an application, you provide the computer environment and execute the model’s actions.

What are OpenAI’s published benchmark results?

OpenAI reported the following CUA results in 2025:

Benchmark Reported success What it measures
WebArena 58.1% Web tasks across simulated sites
WebVoyager 87.0% Web-based tasks on real websites
OSWorld 38.1% Broader computer-use tasks, including desktop applications

OpenAI notes that OSWorld remains substantially below human performance. These percentages are task-set outcomes, not a promise that a particular workflow will succeed at the same rate. Browser layout, account state, language, latency and the exact model version can change the result.

What are ChatGPT agent and cloud browser?

ChatGPT agent provides a hosted virtual-browser workflow in which the assistant uses screenshots to navigate, click and fill forms. User takeover is available when a person must handle a sensitive step. Cloud browser similarly targets supported public and signed-in websites, but access depends on paid plans, region and workspace rollout.

Hosted execution removes much of the browser infrastructure work. You still need to decide what data may enter the session, how a human verifies a final action and how results are recorded. A hosted browser is not automatically isolated from every risk: malicious page content can still attempt prompt injection, and an authenticated session can expose information to the agent.

When is OpenAI the practical choice?

  • Use a hosted option when you want a managed browser and a human takeover path rather than building an executor.
  • Use CUA in your own application when you need to integrate screen control into an existing automation service.
  • Use the WebArena and WebVoyager figures as reference points when your tasks resemble those suites, not as a guarantee for account-heavy workflows.

How does Gemini Computer Use work?

Gemini Computer Use is an API loop, not a turnkey browser service. You send the model a task and a screenshot. It returns a function call such as click, scroll or keystroke. Your code executes that call, captures a new screenshot and sends it back. The cycle continues until the task is complete, blocked or handed to a person.

What environments can Gemini control?

Google documents browser, mobile and desktop support. That breadth is useful when one automation must move between a website, a mobile interface and a desktop application, but it increases the number of device states and input behaviors you must test.

Which safety controls are available?

The tool can optionally scan screenshots for prompt injection and exposes safety decisions that allow an action, require confirmation or block it. Your executor should honor those decisions rather than treating every returned function call as permission to proceed. Google also recommends a secure execution environment; use a sandbox with restricted network access, disposable profiles and minimal credentials.

Google Cloud lists Gemini 4 Argon and multiple Gemini 3.x models as supporting computer use in its managed agent platform. Model availability is volatile, so check the current service documentation and region before selecting a specific model.

What does the Gemini model require from developers?

  1. Capture a clean screenshot that contains only the application state needed for the next decision.
  2. Send the screenshot and task context to the model.
  3. Inspect the returned action and any safety decision.
  4. Ask for human confirmation when the action changes data, communicates externally or has financial or legal consequences.
  5. Execute the approved action, wait for the interface to settle and capture the next screenshot.
  6. Stop on repeated failures, unexpected navigation, suspected injection or a request outside the original scope.

This explicit loop offers strong observability: every screenshot, action and approval can be logged. It also leaves you responsible for timing, coordinate accuracy, recovery and secret handling.

What do benchmark results actually prove?

They show how a particular model and system performed on a particular task set. They do not establish a permanent ranking among Claude, OpenAI and Gemini because there is no single cross-provider test with identical model versions, prompts, environments and scoring.

System and source Task success How to interpret it
OpenAI CUA on WebArena (OpenAI, 2025) 58.1% Reference for that WebArena configuration
OpenAI CUA on WebVoyager (OpenAI, 2025) 87.0% Higher result on a different web-task suite
OpenAI CUA on OSWorld (OpenAI, 2025) 38.1% Broader computer tasks; still well below human performance
Claude Computer Use 3.7 in a COLM 2025 study 56.3% Study-specific task set and evaluation method
OpenAI Operator in the same COLM 2025 study 61.3% Comparable only within that study’s setup

The COLM comparison is informative because both systems were evaluated on one task set, yet it still does not predict your production success. Model updates, browser versions, login state, task instructions and error tolerance can all move the score. Measure completion, human interventions, incorrect actions, time and recovery cost on your own representative tasks.

Which assistant handles authenticated and dynamic websites best?

Authentication is possible with all three approaches, but the ownership model determines how safely it is implemented. Claude’s API mode lets your application decide how cookies or credentials enter the browser; Claude in Chrome can use existing logins. OpenAI’s hosted workflows support selected signed-in sites, and Gemini can handle authenticated pages when your executor supplies the session.

Authenticated sites

  • Use a dedicated account with the minimum permissions needed for the task.
  • Prefer short-lived sessions or delegated tokens over a primary administrator password.
  • Keep credentials out of prompts, screenshots and logs.
  • Require a person to approve actions that send messages, alter records, purchase goods or delete data.

Dynamic pages and single-page applications

Dynamic interfaces can invalidate an element reference between the model’s decision and execution. Add waits based on visible state rather than fixed sleep times, re-capture the page after navigation and verify that the intended target still contains the expected label or value. If an action fails twice, stop and ask for a fresh plan instead of replaying it indefinitely.

CAPTCHAs, pop-ups and unusual controls

These interfaces are common causes of handoff. Design the workflow so a human can take over without losing the session, then resume with a new screenshot and an explicit confirmation of what changed.

What security and safety controls should you compare?

Browser automation turns untrusted page content into instructions that can trigger real actions. Compare assistants on more than login support: examine prompt-injection defenses, confirmation policy, executor isolation, auditability and recovery.

Prompt injection

A page may display text telling the agent to reveal secrets, ignore its task or upload a file. Treat all page text, images, attachments and third-party documents as data, not authority. Anthropic documents prompt-injection and browser-executor limitations; Google offers optional screenshot scanning; OpenAI describes screenshot handling and takeover behavior. None of these measures replaces a narrow task scope and human approval for irreversible actions.

Confirmation and takeover

Map actions into three classes before deployment:

  • Read-only: navigation and extraction can usually run automatically after access is approved.
  • Reversible writes: editing a draft or changing a filter may run with logging and an undo path.
  • Irreversible or external: payment, deletion, publication, account changes and outbound messages require explicit confirmation.

Check whether confirmation occurs before the click, after a preview or only when the agent detects a risk. A policy that pauses too late can still permit an incorrect form submission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Executor isolation and logging

Use a disposable browser profile, a restricted network policy and a separate file system. Log the task request, screenshots or secure hashes of them, actions, safety decisions, approvals and final result. Redact personal data before logs leave the protected environment, and set retention periods instead of keeping screenshots forever.

How should you choose for a specific use case?

Choose Claude when executor control or existing Chrome sessions matter most

The API tool is a strong fit for engineering teams that need to own the browser process, credentials boundary and action validator. Claude in Chrome is convenient for a user who already works in several signed-in tabs and wants an agent to coordinate them. In both cases, plan for injection resistance and confirmation gates.

Choose OpenAI when hosted operation or web benchmarks matter most

A hosted agent or cloud browser is attractive when maintaining browser infrastructure is not your priority and a takeover path is important. CUA’s WebArena and WebVoyager results provide useful baselines for web-heavy tasks, but they should be treated as reference data rather than a service-level guarantee.

Choose Gemini when you need one programmable loop across device types

Gemini suits teams prepared to build an executor that can run browser, mobile and desktop actions. The explicit screenshot/action cycle makes policy checks and audit logs straightforward, while the implementation burden is higher than a turnkey hosted product.

How can you run a fair pilot?

A short, controlled pilot reveals more than choosing from benchmark headlines.

  1. Define the task set. Select at least 20 representative jobs across read-only, reversible and irreversible categories. Include authenticated pages, dynamic content and expected interruptions.
  2. Freeze the environment. Record the model version, browser version, viewport, network conditions, account permissions and starting data. Use the same setup for each assistant.
  3. Write an identical task brief. State the objective, allowed sites, forbidden actions, completion condition and handoff rule. Do not give one system hidden shortcuts.
  4. Instrument every run. Capture completion, time, number of actions, retries, human takeovers, incorrect changes, safety blocks and token or service cost if available.
  5. Score partial success. Separate correct navigation from correct data extraction and from a safe final submission. A fast run that changes the wrong record is a failure.
  6. Review failure traces. Classify errors as planning, perception, stale-reference, authentication, timing, policy or executor faults. Fix the executor or prompt where appropriate, then rerun the same task.
  7. Set a deployment threshold. Approve automation only when the remaining failures are understood, recoverable and acceptable for the data involved.

What common failures should you expect?

  • The agent clicks the wrong control: add a semantic check for label, value and page location before execution; require confirmation when similar controls exist.
  • The page changed after planning: take a fresh screenshot or accessibility snapshot and re-plan instead of replaying coordinates.
  • A login or MFA prompt appears: pause for user takeover; never ask the model to infer or store a one-time code from unrelated text.
  • A page contains an instruction to ignore the task: classify it as untrusted content, block the requested action and record the event.
  • The workflow loops: cap retries, preserve the last known state and expose a diagnostic message to the operator.
  • The run succeeds but the result is wrong: verify the final record, totals, recipient and attachments independently before declaring completion.

What does availability mean in practice?

Availability is not uniform across these products. Claude in Chrome is described as generally available on paid Claude plans as of August 26, 2026, but plan and rollout conditions can change. ChatGPT agent and cloud browser access depends on paid plans, region and workspace rollout. Gemini model names and managed-platform support can change, so confirm the current offering in your region before building a long-lived integration.

The public material does not establish a single, comparable price for browser automation across the three providers. Budget for the assistant, browser or cloud runtime, storage for logs and screenshots, engineering time, and human review of sensitive actions.

What is the bottom line?

Pick the execution model that matches your risk and engineering capacity. Claude is the most natural fit for browser-native control or an existing Chrome session; OpenAI is compelling when you want a hosted browser and relevant web benchmarks; Gemini is compelling when you want to own a cross-device screenshot/action loop. Whichever you choose, isolate credentials, treat every page as untrusted, require confirmation for irreversible actions and validate performance on your own tasks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can browser agents complete CAPTCHA challenges automatically?

No provider guarantees reliable CAPTCHA completion, and attempting to defeat a challenge can violate a site’s rules. Design a human handoff that preserves the browser session, then resume only after the person confirms the page state.

Do I need to build software to use Claude in Chrome or a hosted browser agent?

No. Those consumer or hosted workflows are intended to run without you implementing the action loop. You need application code when you use an API tool or when you want custom credential, logging, policy and recovery behavior.

How should I store credentials for an AI browser worker?

Use a dedicated low-privilege account, short-lived tokens where supported and a secret manager outside the prompt and screenshot stream. Do not place passwords, session cookies or one-time codes in ordinary logs.

Why can an agent succeed in a demo but fail in production?

Production pages have different permissions, data, latency, pop-ups, localization and account state than a fixed demo. A controlled pilot with the same browser profile, task instructions and approval rules exposes those differences before rollout.
