Choose a Windows PC if you need particular Windows software or want the broader Windows desktop environment alongside Google apps. You can use Google apps on either platform; the deciding factors are the apps and features you rely on, offline requirements, hardware, and—if you’re considering a Chromebook—its remaining update period.
Can you use Google apps on a Windows PC?
Yes. Google’s productivity services work in compatible browsers, and Google Drive for desktop is available for qualifying Windows systems. Google’s compatibility documentation specifies supported Windows versions and architectures, so check that your PC meets the current requirements before installing Drive for desktop: Google Drive for desktop requirements.
Google apps are not exclusive to Chromebooks. A Chromebook is simply more oriented around web apps: Google describes services such as Docs and Drive as common ways to create, share, and access work on the device. That makes a Chromebook a natural fit when your everyday tasks already happen in a browser.
How the two platforms compare for Google-app work
| What matters | Chromebook | Windows PC |
|---|---|---|
| Google apps | Designed around web apps, including Google Docs and Drive. Your tasks need to work well in a browser or a supported app. Google’s Chromebook overview | Use Google productivity apps in a compatible browser; Drive for desktop is supported on qualifying Windows systems. Drive for desktop requirements |
| Office files | Google documents editing Office files through its apps or a Microsoft 365 setup connected to OneDrive. The workflow and account requirements matter. Office-file workflows | Google apps can run on Windows, but confirm that your chosen Office software, license, and required features meet your needs. |
| Offline work | Some Drive files can be made available offline after setup. Availability depends on the file, app, and local storage. Use Google Drive files offline | The cited Google compatibility information establishes Windows support, not the offline behavior of every app. Check the specific apps and files you need. |
| Software needs | Suitable when each essential task has an adequate web or Chromebook-compatible app. Support for a category of app does not guarantee feature parity for every service. | A reasonable choice when you depend on particular Windows software. Check the software’s current requirements and the PC’s specifications. |
| Device support and hardware | Check the exact model’s update schedule and compare its keyboard, display, memory, storage, ports, battery, and form factor with your workload. Chromebook update schedule | Compare the same hardware details and confirm they meet the requirements of your applications. |

The other option is to set up Microsoft 365 and connect the Chromebook Files app to OneDrive. Google states that OneDrive is required to edit files in Microsoft 365 on a Chromebook. These instructions describe configured workflows; they do not mean a Chromebook runs the complete Windows desktop version of Office. See Google’s Office-file setup instructions.

Can you use a Chromebook offline?
Yes, for some tasks and files, but offline access needs to be configured and is not universal. In Google Drive, enable offline access and make the files or folders you need available offline. Google says changes sync when the Chromebook next connects to the internet. Chromebook Plus also offers an option to sync all of My Drive, provided there is enough device storage; low storage can interrupt availability. Follow Google’s offline-access steps.
Google also identifies Gmail Offline, Google Keep, and Drive documents as possible offline uses, while noting that some apps and services do not work without an internet connection. If you regularly work while traveling or without reliable internet, make a list of the exact apps and files you need, then confirm they can be used offline on your account and device before relying on them.

Google’s instructions for Chromebook Office-file workflows add an important distinction: files in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and Microsoft 365 files in that guide, cannot be opened while the computer is offline, though a limited basic editor may be offered. Do not assume that enabling Drive offline access makes those Office workflows available offline.
What file and accessory compatibility should you check?
Google’s general Chromebook file guide lists Office extensions including .doc, .docx, .xls, and .xlsx as supported, while .ppt and .pptx are listed as read-only. That basic file handling is distinct from the editing workflows through Google apps or Microsoft 365. For a presentation you need to change, use a documented editing workflow rather than relying on the general file-type listing. See Google’s Chromebook file-type guide.

If an external drive or peripheral is essential, verify that specific device and its intended use rather than assuming every accessory will work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long will a Chromebook keep receiving updates?
Google’s current policy text says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of automatic updates, but that is not a promise of 10 years of support remaining on every Chromebook. The update schedule is specific to the device. Google says some pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates may lack support for certain features or services. Before buying, look up the exact model on Google’s automatic update schedule; do not rely only on a seller’s general statement about the policy.

- Choose a Chromebook if your essential tasks work well in a browser or supported app, the Google Drive and Office-file workflows suit you, offline access covers the files you need, and the specific device has suitable hardware and update support.
- Choose a Windows PC if you rely on particular Windows software or want the Windows desktop environment as well as Google services. Confirm that the PC meets your apps’ requirements and that the Google services you plan to use work in your browser or through Drive for desktop.
