For a small vanilla Minecraft: Java Edition server, start with 2 GB of available memory, then increase it when player count, world activity, plugins, or mods push usage higher. A 1–4-player LAN world may run with about 1 GB, while 5–10 vanilla players generally start around 2 GB and larger or busier worlds often need 4 GB or more. Modded servers have no reliable universal number, so begin above the vanilla baseline and scale from measurements.
The number you enter in -Xmx is only Java’s maximum heap. The operating system, Java’s non-heap memory, the server process, backups, and other services also need RAM. Allocate too little and you can see chunk-loading delays, garbage-collection pauses, crashes, or stuttering; allocate too much and you may starve the host or gain little performance.

How much RAM should you allocate to a Minecraft server?
Use the following figures as starting allocations for the server process, not guarantees. They assume a reasonably current Java server and a host with additional memory reserved for the operating system. World generation, simulation distance, farms, redstone, plugins, mods, and storage or backup tasks can all change the result.
| Scenario | Starting allocation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 players, vanilla or LAN | 1–2 GB | The Minecraft Wiki LAN table lists 1 GB for 1–4 players. Use 2 GB when the world is active or the host runs other services. |
| 5–10 players, vanilla | About 2 GB | This matches the LAN table’s 5–10-player tier. Monitor chunk generation, farms, and plugins rather than treating 2 GB as a ceiling. |
| Small dedicated server | At least 2 GB available | The official Java server tutorial recommends at least 2 GB for a small server. “Available” includes memory you can spare on the machine, not just the heap value. |
| 10 or more players or a larger world | 4 GB or more | The LAN table lists 4 GB for 10+ players, and larger worlds can need that amount sooner when many chunks are active. |
| Illustrative dedicated-server tiers | 2 GB for 1–2 players; 4 GB for 2–5; 8 GB for 6+ | These figures are examples from dedicated-server guidance. The operating system needs memory in addition to the stated server allocation. |
| Modded or plugin-heavy server | Start above the vanilla baseline | No universal official number is established. Profile the running server and increase memory in measured steps. |
For a home server with five players at the default simulation distance, the Java server tutorial gives -Xmx2G as more than enough. That example is useful for orientation, but it does not cover unusually large render or simulation settings, heavy farms, a growing world, or a large modpack.

Why does a Minecraft server’s RAM requirement change?
Player count is only one input. The server must keep world data, entities, scheduled tasks, and loaded chunks available while Java and the operating system perform their own work. Two servers with the same number of players can therefore have very different memory profiles.
Player count and simultaneous activity
Each additional player can keep another area active and create more entities, block updates, inventories, and network work. Ten players spread across a world may be less demanding than five players exploring new terrain in different directions, because exploration triggers chunk generation and loading.
World size and new-chunk generation
An established world that players revisit usually has a steadier working set. Rapid exploration, teleporting, or a freshly started world causes the server to generate and populate chunks while it is also running gameplay. That combination can produce temporary memory and CPU spikes, so leave more headroom than the player-count table alone suggests.
Simulation and view-distance settings
Higher distances keep more of the world active around each player. The exact impact depends on the server version and world, but increasing these settings generally raises the amount of chunk and entity work. If memory rises after changing a distance setting, roll back the setting or raise the allocation only after confirming that the host still has room.
Redstone, farms, and entities
Mob farms, item sorters, villager halls, large redstone machines, and dense animal areas create persistent activity even when players are not exploring. A quiet vanilla world can fit the lower estimates; a technical build may need the next allocation tier with the same number of players.
Plugins, mods, and data packs
Every extension adds code and often adds objects, event handlers, world content, or background tasks. A few lightweight plugins may have little effect, while a large modpack can make a 4 GB vanilla estimate irrelevant. Treat the baseline as a floor, not as a promise that a modded server will fit.

There is no single dependable figure for modded Minecraft because modpacks differ in code, world generation, dimensions, entities, and configuration. Start with more memory than the equivalent vanilla server, then use logs and system monitoring to decide whether the next step is justified.

Choose a conservative starting point
For a small modded group, reserve at least the vanilla amount that would fit the same player count, then add headroom for the pack and its world-generation behavior. A pack that introduces several dimensions or many machines can need substantially more than a mostly cosmetic pack. The researched official guidance does not publish a universal modded number, so avoid promises such as “every modpack needs 8 GB.”
Test the pack under its real workload
Have players explore, load the dimensions they will use, build representative machines, and travel at the expected distances. Watch memory over a normal session rather than judging from the server’s idle value. If usage climbs as the world grows and does not fall after normal garbage collection, increase the allocation in a controlled step and test again.
Check CPU before buying more RAM
Chunk generation, entity ticking, and redstone can be CPU-limited even when free RAM remains. A RAM increase will not repair a single-core performance bottleneck, an overloaded tick loop, or slow storage. Record both memory and tick or log symptoms before changing hardware so that you address the actual constraint.

Calculate the host’s budget before choosing -Xmx. Keep enough physical memory for the operating system, Java’s non-heap areas, the server process outside the heap, monitoring, backups, and any other applications running on the machine.
- Measure installed physical RAM. Note the machine’s total memory and whether another user, game, database, web service, or backup job shares it.
- Reserve the operating system’s working space. Do not plan to make the Minecraft heap consume nearly all installed RAM. A machine that swaps or invokes an out-of-memory killer will perform worse than one with a smaller, stable heap.
- Budget non-heap Java memory. PaperMC warns that Minecraft and Java need additional memory on top of
Xmx. When that overhead is starving the host, its guidance is to reduce bothXmxandXmsby about 1,000–1,500 MB. - Leave room for growth. A world that fits today may use more memory after exploration, farms, or a new plugin. Keep a reserve instead of sizing to the first quiet test.
As a practical example, a 4 GB heap is not a safe plan for a 4 GB computer: the operating system and Java overhead would have nowhere reliable to go. A host with substantially more physical RAM can provide a 4 GB heap while retaining the headroom needed for normal operation.
What do -Xms and -Xmx mean?
-Xms sets Java’s initial heap size and -Xmx sets its maximum heap size. They describe the Java heap, not the complete memory footprint of the server or the amount of RAM that must be installed in the machine.
Use a simple launch command
A larger allocation can be started with:
java -Xms1G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar --nogui
Replace server.jar with the actual server-jar filename. In this example Java begins with a 1 GB heap and may grow to 4 GB. The host still needs additional physical RAM for Java overhead and the operating system.

Match the flags to the workload
For a small home server, the tutorial’s five-player example uses -Xmx2G. A larger allocation example uses -Xms1G -Xmx4G. Do not copy either command blindly: choose values that fit the host budget and the measured workload, and keep -Xms low enough that startup does not immediately reserve memory needed by other services.
Restart safely after changing memory
- Stop the server normally so the world is saved.
- Back up the world and the launch script.
- Edit the startup command or the host panel’s Java-arguments field.
- Start the server and confirm the console shows the expected Java command or heap setting.
- Let players perform normal activities while you watch memory, garbage-collection messages, and operating-system pressure.
Changing these flags does not alter the world itself. It changes the amount of heap Java may use after the next restart.
How can you tell that the server needs more RAM?
Increase memory when measurements and repeatable symptoms point to memory pressure, not merely because a larger number sounds safer. Minecraft Help associates a mismatch between allocation, available system RAM, and version requirements with crashes, lag, and stuttering.
Signs of an undersized allocation
- Out-of-memory errors or the server process being killed by the operating system.
- Frequent, long garbage-collection pauses that stop the game for players.
- Chunk loading or generation that becomes slow as players explore.
- Usage that repeatedly reaches the heap limit during normal play.
- Stuttering that appears with a reproducible activity, such as opening a dimension or activating a farm.
Capture the time, player count, activity, heap usage, and relevant log lines. If the symptom disappears after players stop exploring but returns at the same workload, that pattern is more useful than a one-time peak.
Signs that RAM is not the root cause
- Tick delays occur while memory remains comfortably below the limit.
- Only new terrain is slow, suggesting CPU or storage pressure during generation.
- The host is swapping because the heap and other services consume all physical RAM; assigning an even larger heap would worsen the problem.
- A plugin or mod produces errors that persist after an allocation increase.
In these cases, reduce simulation or view distance, remove or reconfigure the offending extension, improve storage or CPU capacity, or move other services off the host before adding RAM.
Is allocating more RAM always better?
No. PaperMC notes that additional memory eventually gives diminishing returns. A larger heap can mask a leak for a while, delay garbage collection, or leave too little physical RAM for the operating system and other processes.
Scale gradually: make one change, reproduce the workload, and compare peak usage and pause behavior. If a 2 GB heap remains well below its limit with the intended players and activities, jumping straight to 8 GB provides no evidence-based benefit. If the same workload repeatedly reaches the limit and the host has genuine spare RAM, move to the next practical tier and test again.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Keep the distinction between capacity and performance clear. More RAM increases the amount of live data the server can hold; it does not automatically increase the server’s tick rate, network bandwidth, storage speed, or single-core CPU performance.
Should you self-host, upgrade the computer, or use managed hosting?
The right choice depends on more than memory. Compare the workload and the operational effort before deciding where the server should run.
| Option | Best fit | Advantages | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-host on an existing computer | Small groups, modest vanilla worlds, and owners comfortable with configuration | No separate hosting subscription; hardware can also run other services | You must provide RAM headroom, backups, updates, firewall and router configuration, uptime, and troubleshooting. Home-network setup requires networking work. |
| Upgrade the host’s RAM | A computer with adequate CPU and storage but insufficient physical memory | One-time hardware improvement can support the server and other applications | Check DDR generation, desktop DIMM versus laptop SODIMM form factor, motherboard limits, and operating-system support before buying. RAM cannot fix a CPU or network bottleneck. |
| Managed Minecraft hosting | Owners who prefer ready-made networking, backups, and maintenance | Provider handles much of the setup and may offer scalable memory plans | Recurring cost, provider limits, migration and backup policies, mod compatibility, geographic latency, and actual included resources need verification. |
| Realms or another simple hosted service | Small groups that value ease over server-side customization | Mojang points small groups toward Realms when home networking and maintenance are undesirable | Check the service’s player, modding, world-size, and configuration limits before choosing it. |
For any option, compare expected concurrent players, vanilla versus modded load, world size, simulation and view distance, CPU single-core performance, storage and backup requirements, networking effort, and total monthly versus one-time cost. A host with abundant RAM but weak CPU or unreliable storage may be a worse Minecraft server than a smaller, balanced machine.
Does Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 change server RAM recommendations?
No. The 26.1 release notes describe a client-side default change: compatible Java Edition clients moved from a 2 GB default allocation to 4 GB and switched to ZGC. That setting is for the game client and should not be copied as a server requirement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Server sizing still depends on the server version, Java runtime, world, player behavior, and extensions. Check the server software’s current documentation and observe the actual process rather than assuming that a client default applies to a dedicated server.

One to four friends on a vanilla LAN world
Begin at 1 GB only when the world is quiet and the host has plenty of spare memory. Choose 2 GB if players explore frequently, build active farms, or share the computer with other applications. Keep an eye on chunk generation and whether the heap approaches its limit during group play.
Five to ten players on vanilla
Start around 2 GB, matching the LAN guidance, while reserving additional host memory. If players spread out, generate terrain continuously, or run plugins, test at 3–4 GB only when monitoring shows the smaller allocation is the constraint.

A modpack or plugin-heavy community server
Start above the matching vanilla tier, load the pack’s dimensions and features, and measure a representative session. Increase in steps while preserving operating-system headroom; there is no official one-size-fits-all modded allocation.
What is the safest RAM-sizing workflow?
- Describe the workload. Record the expected concurrent players, edition and server version, vanilla or modded status, world age, distance settings, farms, and other services on the host.
- Choose the lowest sensible starting tier. Use the table rather than an arbitrary large heap.
- Calculate physical headroom. Subtract the operating system, Java overhead, backups, and other applications before setting
-Xmx. - Set
-Xmsand-Xmx. Apply the launch command, restart cleanly, and verify that the server starts without swapping or memory-pressure warnings. - Exercise the real workload. Have players explore, use farms, visit dimensions, and perform the activities that normally cause trouble.
- Measure before changing anything. Record peak heap use, pauses, out-of-memory events, tick behavior, and host memory pressure.
- Adjust one variable. Increase RAM only when the evidence shows a memory limit; otherwise tune distances, remove an extension, improve CPU or storage, or reduce competing services.
- Re-test after growth. Revisit the budget whenever you add players, a major modpack, a new dimension, or a large automated build.
This approach keeps the server responsive without treating RAM as a substitute for balanced hardware or careful configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change a server’s RAM allocation without deleting the world?
Yes. Stop the server cleanly, back up the world, edit the Java launch arguments, and restart it. The -Xms and -Xmx values affect Java’s heap and do not erase world data.
Why does my server use less memory than the value in -Xmx?
-Xmx is a ceiling, not a reservation that must be filled. Java expands the heap as needed, while other memory belongs to the operating system and Java’s non-heap areas.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I lower view distance before adding RAM?
If memory or tick pressure appears only when many chunks are active, lowering view or simulation distance can reduce the workload without a hardware change. Test the setting with the same player activities so you can tell whether it solved the bottleneck.
How often should I recheck the allocation?
Recheck after adding players, installing a substantial mod or plugin, expanding the world, changing distance settings, or building a large automated farm. A stable idle reading is not enough; review peak usage during a normal busy session.
Does a client’s RAM setting control the dedicated server?
No. The client and server are separate Java processes with different workloads. A client default, including the 26.1 change to 4 GB on compatible devices, is not a server-sizing rule.
