For a browser game that an LMS imports and grades with completion and a score, choose SCORM. Choose xAPI when the game runs outside the LMS or you need event-level telemetry in a Learning Record Store (LRS). Choose cmi5 when the LMS must launch the activity but you also need xAPI’s richer statements and standardized session behavior. Build a custom API only when real-time application workflows, proprietary data, or backend integrations justify owning the protocol, authentication, reporting, and interoperability work.
The decision is less about which standard is newest than where the game runs, what must be recorded, who launches it, and which LMS or LRS capabilities you already operate. The sections below map those requirements to an implementation path.
Which integration should an educational game use?
Use the smallest integration that satisfies the game’s deployment and reporting requirements. SCORM is the lowest-complexity choice for an LMS-hosted HTML5 game with conventional outcomes. xAPI is the better fit for distributed or mobile gameplay and detailed event histories. cmi5 combines LMS-controlled launch with xAPI records. A custom API is appropriate when the application needs commands, live state, or business workflows that the standards do not define.
| Requirement | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Import a browser game into an LMS and report completion, pass/fail, score, time, and limited interactions | SCORM | It is designed around LMS-managed, browser-delivered content and a defined runtime data model. |
| Capture detailed events from a game, simulator, mobile app, or activity outside the LMS | xAPI | Statements are sent to an LRS and can describe experiences wherever they occur. |
| Have an LMS launch distributed content while retaining xAPI statements and normalized sessions | cmi5 | It adds launch, authorization, session, course-structure, and reporting rules to xAPI. |
| Drive real-time commands, application-specific workflows, or proprietary backend services | Custom API | You control the contract, but also own identity, security, reliability, reporting, and interoperability. |
How does SCORM work for an HTML5 game?
SCORM assumes that an LMS manages and launches the content. The game is packaged for import, opened in a browser as a Shareable Content Object (SCO), and communicates with an LMS-provided JavaScript API during that session. Its data model is deliberately constrained, which makes ordinary completion and score reporting predictable but limits fine-grained game telemetry.

What SCORM can report
A game can normally send completion or success status, a score, session time, total time, and a limited set of interaction data. The exact fields and behavior depend on the SCORM version accepted by the target LMS and its conformance, so verify the platform’s supported edition before building the package.
What the runtime requires
- The LMS must accept SCORM packages and expose the expected runtime API to the launched SCO.
- The game must discover that API in the hosting page or its parent/opener window.
- The game should initialize the session, set only supported data elements, commit updates, and terminate cleanly when the learner exits.
- Completion and score rules must be explicit; an LMS cannot infer a game’s win condition from arbitrary browser events.
SCORM implementation path
- Confirm the target edition and import rules. Check whether the LMS accepts the SCORM edition your wrapper generates and whether it requires a particular manifest structure, launch file, or package-size limit.
- Define the outcome contract. Decide what counts as started, completed, passed, failed, and mastered. Map those states to the SCORM data elements the LMS actually supports.
- Wrap the game as the SCO. Keep the browser game and its assets inside the package, provide the manifest, and make the launch file load the game.
- Implement API discovery and session calls. On launch, locate the LMS JavaScript API, initialize it, write score and status changes, commit them at safe checkpoints, and terminate on exit.
- Test interruption and relaunch. Close the browser, suspend the game, resume it, and relaunch it from the LMS. Confirm that the LMS stores the values you expect rather than only showing them in the game.
SCORM is a poor match when the game must continue outside the LMS, run as a native mobile app, or describe hundreds of meaningful events. Those cases require a statement-oriented approach or a separate service.
When is xAPI better than SCORM for game analytics?
xAPI is better when the learning experience is not contained by the LMS or when completion and a single score are insufficient. The game sends statements to an LRS, allowing records from browser games, simulations, mobile applications, virtual environments, and group activities to be collected in one place.

Design every statement around a stable actor, a controlled verb, and an identifiable object. Add a result when the event has a score, success value, completion state, duration, or response; use context for course, session, team, or attempt information; include a timestamp; and reserve extensions for data that does not belong in the core fields.
For game-specific events, define an xAPI profile covering the verbs, activity types, result fields, and extension names. A profile prevents two teams from recording “level complete” or “hint used” with incompatible meanings. Reuse an established profile when one fits instead of inventing another vocabulary.

xAPI implementation path
- Choose the LRS and authentication arrangement. Confirm where statements are accepted, how the game obtains authorization, and whether the LRS is part of the LMS or a separate service.
- Map the learner identity. Use a stable actor representation across attempts and devices. Decide how anonymous, guest, and account-linked play are handled before sending production data.
- Write the event vocabulary. List the events that answer instructional questions: launch, objective attempt, level completion, hint use, collaboration, failure, and final result. Define each event’s meaning and required fields.
- Build a statement client. Queue statements during play, attach timestamps and session context, send them over the authorized connection, and record delivery failures for retry.
- Design for intermittent connectivity. A mobile or distributed game should persist unsent statements locally, prevent duplicate delivery, and reconcile the queue when a connection returns.
- Validate the profile and reports. Check that the LRS stores every field, that repeated attempts remain distinguishable, and that dashboards calculate completion from the definitions you documented.
xAPI by itself does not specify how an LMS launches a game, structures a course, or manages a learner session. If those LMS behaviors are required, use cmi5 or add a separate launch service.
Where does cmi5 fit between SCORM and xAPI?
cmi5 is the choice when the LMS must launch the game but the project needs xAPI statements. It defines a package with a course structure and Assignable Units, specifies launch parameters and authorization, and establishes session and reporting conventions while using an LRS for the statements.
Recommended Free Tools
What cmi5 adds to xAPI
- LMS launch: the LMS supplies the launch information instead of leaving launch behavior undefined.
- Authorization: the launched activity receives the information needed to send statements to the LRS.
- Session management: standardized identifiers group statements for a particular launch and attempt.
- Course structure: the package describes units and their relationships so the LMS can present and track the activity.
- Reporting rules: defined verbs and result conventions make completion and success more consistent across implementations.
cmi5 implementation path
- Verify platform support. The LMS or an equivalent launch system must support cmi5, and an accessible LRS is required. Confirm the supported cmi5 version and conformance claims.
- Model the course and Assignable Units. Decide which game modes or missions are separate units, what order or prerequisites apply, and which unit owns the completion result.
- Generate the cmi5 package. Include the course structure and references to the game. Distributed hosting is possible; the game does not have to be delivered from the same LMS web server.
- Handle launch parameters. Read the LMS-provided launch and authorization information, establish the cmi5 session identifier, and use it consistently in statements.
- Emit cmi5-defined statements. Follow the required verbs, result conventions, and session grouping rather than sending an unrestricted game vocabulary for the core lifecycle.
- Test LMS-to-LRS reporting. Launch, suspend, resume, fail, and complete the activity. Check that the LMS status reflects the statements stored by the LRS.
cmi5 does not use SCORM’s same-page JavaScript API assumption, which makes it suitable for distributed content. It still depends on cmi5 support in the launch environment; an xAPI-capable LRS alone is not enough.
When is a custom API justified?
A custom API is justified when the game needs application-specific commands or data flows that SCORM, xAPI, and cmi5 do not naturally provide. Examples include real-time multiplayer state, server-side inventory changes, proprietary scoring services, identity-provider orchestration, or immediate backend actions triggered by gameplay.
What you must own
- Contract: define endpoints, request and response schemas, versioning, error codes, and compatibility rules.
- Identity: map LMS accounts, application accounts, guest players, and team memberships without creating duplicate learner records.
- Authentication and authorization: issue, rotate, expire, and revoke credentials; limit each token to the actions it needs.
- Reliability: specify timeouts, retries, idempotency keys, ordering, offline queues, and conflict resolution.
- Completion logic: document exactly how attempts, scores, pass thresholds, resets, and late submissions are calculated.
- Privacy: minimize personal data, define retention and deletion behavior, and restrict access to sensitive telemetry.
- Reporting and export: provide dashboards or exports that administrators can use without querying raw application tables.
Because “custom API” is not a standardized protocol, another LMS cannot automatically understand it. If portability matters, emit a standards-based xAPI or cmi5 record alongside the custom calls. The custom service can remain the operational backend while the standards-based record preserves a portable learning history.

What is the difference between SCORM, xAPI, cmi5, and a custom API?
| Axis | SCORM | xAPI | cmi5 | Custom API |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | LMS launches a SCO through its runtime API. | Does not define LMS launch. | Defines LMS launch parameters and session behavior. | Defined by your application and integration code. |
| Data model | Strictly defined and relatively constrained. | Developer-defined statements with result, context, and extensions. | xAPI statements plus cmi5 lifecycle and reporting conventions. | Whatever schema the project team creates. |
| Hosting | Follows the LMS package and browser-delivery model. | Can record activity anywhere, including mobile and distributed systems. | Can reference distributed content while retaining LMS launch. | Any architecture you operate. |
| Reporting | Commonly completion, score, status, time, and limited interactions. | Requires an LRS and deliberate profile and reporting design. | Standardizes course structure, completion, session grouping, and reporting around an LRS. | Requires your own reporting, exports, and administrator tools. |
| Best fit | Conventional LMS-hosted browser game. | Rich telemetry and cross-system experiences. | LMS-launched game needing xAPI richness. | Real-time or proprietary application workflows. |
| Main risk | Limited event detail and dependence on browser/LMS runtime behavior. | Inconsistent vocabularies or identity unless profiles and governance are explicit. | Requires cmi5-capable launch environment plus an LRS. | High long-term interoperability and maintenance burden. |
How do I choose an integration for a specific game?
Start with deployment, not analytics features. Answer these questions in order; the first “yes” that fully describes the project usually identifies the least risky option.
- Is the game imported and launched by the LMS? If yes, and the required result is completion, pass/fail, score, time, and a few interactions, choose SCORM.
- Must the game run outside the LMS? For a mobile app, simulator, virtual world, or distributed web service, choose xAPI unless LMS-controlled launch is mandatory.
- Must the LMS launch it while the project needs detailed xAPI data? Choose cmi5, provided the LMS supports it and an LRS is available.
- Does the application need commands or transactions rather than learning records? Add a custom API for those workflows. Keep xAPI or cmi5 for portable learning records when multiple LMSs or reporting systems are in scope.
- What will administrators actually consume? If they need a transcript status, map the game’s rules to the standard’s completion model. If they need event analysis, plan an LRS data model, profile, and reporting layer before implementation.
How do I connect an HTML5 game to an LMS step by step?
The technical path depends on the selected protocol, but a disciplined integration process prevents most launch and reporting failures.
1. Inventory the target environment
- Record the LMS product, edition, version, accepted package types, launch restrictions, and supported standards.
- Identify whether an LRS is built in or separate and how applications authenticate to it.
- Confirm whether content may be hosted on another domain and whether browser security policies permit that arrangement.
2. Write the outcome and telemetry specification
Define the learner, attempt, session, start condition, completion condition, pass threshold, score scale, duration, reset behavior, and events worth retaining. Separate transcript-critical data from diagnostic events so the game does not send noise as if it were an official result.
3. Build a thin integration layer
Keep game logic independent from protocol calls. A small adapter can translate “mission completed” into SCORM data, an xAPI statement, cmi5 lifecycle statements, or a custom request. This makes a later migration possible without rewriting every game screen.
4. Test real learner journeys
- Launch a new attempt and verify the expected initial state.
- Complete a partial objective, exit unexpectedly, and resume.
- Fail, retry, and complete the same objective to check attempt separation.
- Lose connectivity, restore it, and confirm queued data is delivered once.
- Use multiple accounts and devices to test identity mapping.
- Inspect both the learner-facing LMS status and the underlying stored records.
5. Operate the integration
Monitor failed launches, authorization errors, statement rejection, queue growth, and mismatches between game results and transcript status. Version the vocabulary and endpoint contract, document migrations, and retain a way to replay or repair records without changing the learner’s original event time.

What are the common failure modes?
The game works locally but cannot find the LMS API
This is usually a launch-context problem: the file was opened directly, the LMS uses a different parent-frame arrangement, or the package was launched in a new window. Test from the real LMS and implement the discovery behavior required by the target SCORM edition.
The LMS shows completion but not the score
Check that the score scale and status fields are set in the order expected by the LMS, that updates are committed, and that termination occurs after the final write. Verify the LMS’s supported data elements instead of assuming every SCORM field is stored.
xAPI statements are accepted but reports are inconsistent
Inconsistent actor identifiers, verbs, activity IDs, or attempt context produce fragmented histories. Freeze the profile, validate statements before production, and make dashboards calculate results from documented rules rather than from free-text descriptions.
cmi5 launches but the LRS has no usable session
Inspect the launch parameters, authorization data, and session identifier. Confirm that the activity is using cmi5 lifecycle conventions and that the LRS connection is the one authorized by the launch environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Custom API data is duplicated
Retries without idempotency are the usual cause. Give each write an idempotency key, make the server safely repeatable, and store delivery status so a client can retry without creating a second completion or reward.

Can a game use SCORM and xAPI together?
Yes. A common hybrid keeps SCORM or cmi5 responsible for LMS launch and transcript status while sending richer event telemetry to an LRS through xAPI. Treat the two channels as separate contracts: the LMS-facing result should be authoritative for course completion, while the LRS preserves the detailed event history.
If a custom backend is also required, send operational commands there and emit a standards-based statement when an event has learning-record value. Document which system owns each field so a later retry or reconciliation does not overwrite a valid result with a stale one.
What should be checked before selecting a standard?
- Platform capability: verify support and conformance for the exact LMS and version, not merely a marketing label.
- Launch topology: decide whether content is inside an LMS package, hosted elsewhere, or delivered by a mobile application.
- Telemetry depth: identify the smallest event set that supports instructional and operational decisions.
- Identity and privacy: define stable identifiers, consent, retention, and access controls.
- Recovery behavior: specify offline storage, retries, duplicate prevention, resume, and conflict handling.
- Portability horizon: if another LMS or reporting system may be adopted, preserve xAPI or cmi5 records instead of making a custom schema the only history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SCORM record every move a player makes?
It can store only the interaction and runtime data elements supported by the SCORM edition and LMS. For high-volume events such as movement, repeated attempts, hints, or team actions, send a deliberately designed xAPI stream to an LRS instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do I need an LMS to use xAPI?
No. xAPI statements can be generated by a mobile app, simulator, or standalone game and sent to an LRS without an LMS launch. You still need an LRS, an identity strategy, authorization, and reporting rules.
Does cmi5 replace an LRS?
No. cmi5 defines how an LMS launches and tracks an activity while using xAPI statements; an LRS remains the destination for those statements. Confirm that the launch environment and LRS support the same cmi5 implementation.
Should a custom API expose xAPI statements directly?
Usually keep the custom endpoints focused on application transactions and emit xAPI through a separate adapter or service. This preserves a stable learning-record contract without forcing LMS reporting clients to understand proprietary commands.
How do I migrate a SCORM game to xAPI?
First preserve the existing completion and score definitions, then map each learner outcome to an actor, verb, object, result, context, and attempt identifier. Run both integrations during validation, compare transcript outcomes with LRS records, and retire the SCORM wrapper only after the target LMS and reports match.
