Deploy an enterprise AI agent as a bounded Java service, not as an unrestricted model connection. Put an authenticated API in front of the service, keep orchestration in a framework or standard layer, expose narrowly scoped application tools, retrieve only data the caller is authorized to see, and run the container with explicit time, tool-call, and approval limits. For the documented Microsoft deployment path, use Java 17 or later, Maven, Spring AI, Azure OpenAI, Azure Database for PostgreSQL with pgvector, and Azure Container Apps.

Spring AI is usually the shortest path for an established Spring Boot organization; LangChain4j is a flexible Java-native choice across several runtimes; Jakarta Agentic AI is the standards-oriented option for Jakarta EE teams, but its 1.0 milestone is still a Draft released July 30, 2026. The sections below show how to choose, build, secure, deploy, and operate each style without giving the model direct access to enterprise APIs.

What is an enterprise AI agent in a Java application?

An enterprise agent is an application-controlled workflow around a language model. The model proposes a decision, while Java code enforces identity, authorization, tool schemas, data access, transaction boundaries, budgets, and the final action. A useful mental model is the four-phase workflow described by Jakarta Agentic AI: trigger, decision, action, outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Trigger: an authenticated request, scheduled event, message, or business process starts the run.
  • Decision: the model interprets the request and selects an allowed next step, possibly asking for a tool call.
  • Action: application code validates and executes the requested tool against approved services or data.
  • Outcome: the application records the result, applies policy, and returns a response or starts another controlled step.

The model must not receive direct access to database connections, internal HTTP clients, queues, or cloud credentials. Spring AI’s tool-calling documentation makes the boundary explicit: the application executes each tool and returns its result; the model never receives direct access to the APIs behind those tools.

Which Java framework should you choose?

Choose the framework that matches your existing runtime and the amount of standardization you need. These options occupy different layers rather than being interchangeable products.

Option Programming model Provider and data portability Tools, workflows, and RAG Runtime fit Operations and maturity
Spring AI Spring beans, ChatClient, advisors, and auto-configuration Portable model access with integrations for model providers and vector stores Structured outputs, function/tool calling, conversation memory, RAG advisors, evaluation utilities Best fit for Spring Boot applications Observations for model, chat, embedding, vector-store, and tool operations; application-controlled call limits
LangChain4j Java-native APIs and injectable AI services Documentation lists integrations with more than 20 LLM providers and more than 30 embedding stores Agents, tools, memory, RAG, and agent topologies Integrates with Quarkus, Spring Boot, Helidon, and Micronaut CDI extension adds MicroProfile Config, retry, timeout, circuit-breaker and fallback annotations, MCP server support, and OpenTelemetry telemetry
Jakarta Agentic AI CDI annotations such as @Agent, @Trigger, @Decision, @Action, and @Outcome Vendor-neutral specification direction; implementation support must be checked for your server Workflow phases and exception handling are defined as annotations and CDI scopes Jakarta EE 10+ and Java SE 17+ 1.0 milestone is a Draft released July 30, 2026; platform and vendor compatibility are not yet guaranteed

When is Spring AI the right choice?

Use Spring AI when your organization already standardizes on Spring Boot and wants the ChatClient and advisor model, auto-configuration, portable model access, and integrated vector-store and observability features. Its ToolCallingAdvisor keeps the execution loop in your application, supports approval gates and custom advisors, and can stop runaway behavior with call limits.

When is LangChain4j the right choice?

Choose LangChain4j when you want a Java-first library with broad provider and embedding-store coverage or need to run the same agent style across Spring Boot, Quarkus, Helidon, and Micronaut. Its CDI extension is useful in Jakarta-oriented deployments that need injectable AI services, MicroProfile configuration, resilience annotations, MCP server support, and OpenTelemetry integration.

When is Jakarta Agentic AI the right choice?

Jakarta Agentic AI fits teams that want a CDI-shaped, vendor-neutral programming model aligned with Jakarta EE security, persistence, transactions, messaging, and REST. Because the specification is still Draft, treat it as a compatibility decision: verify an implementation, supported annotations, and upgrade policy on the exact application server you intend to operate before making it the production foundation.

What architecture should a production agent use?

Keep the agent behind an authenticated service boundary and separate model orchestration from business capabilities. A practical architecture has these layers:

  1. Ingress: API gateway or service endpoint authenticates the caller, attaches tenant and role context, applies rate limits, and assigns a correlation ID.
  2. Agent coordinator: Spring AI, LangChain4j, or CDI code manages prompts, model calls, tool approvals, turn budgets, and termination conditions.
  3. Tool layer: typed Java interfaces expose narrow operations such as searching a permitted knowledge base, checking an order, or creating a draft. Business services—not prompts—enforce authorization and transaction rules.
  4. Retrieval layer: an embedding model and vector store provide grounding only when the task needs enterprise documents or semantic search.
  5. System services: databases, queues, REST clients, and workflow engines remain private behind service APIs and never become model credentials.
  6. Runtime controls: secret management, private networking, health checks, readiness checks, autoscaling, timeouts, logs, metrics, traces, and a kill switch surround the service.

Pass non-model context, including tenant identifiers, user roles, policy decisions, and secrets, on the server side. Do not place it in a prompt merely because the model might need to reason about it.

What do you need before deployment?

Establish the runtime and ownership boundaries before writing agent prompts.

  • Runtime: use a managed container platform such as Azure Container Apps or an equivalent service that supports health probes, revisioning, autoscaling, and private connectivity.
  • Data contracts: define tool input and output schemas, tenant boundaries, retention rules, and which actions require human approval.
  • Operational ownership: assign an owner for prompts, tool interfaces, model-provider changes, incident response, and cost controls.

How do you deploy an AI agent step by step?

1. Set and pin the runtime baseline

Create a Maven service on Java 17 or later. Pin dependency versions instead of accepting floating ranges, and emit the resolved versions in your build metadata so a production incident can be reproduced. Build a container image with a non-root runtime user and a configuration mechanism that reads secrets at startup.

2. Define the authenticated API

Expose a small REST or messaging interface. Authenticate users and service callers before the agent coordinator runs. Attach a correlation ID, tenant ID, subject, roles, and request deadline to the server-side execution context. Reject requests that lack a tenant or exceed the service’s input-size limit.

3. Model tools as typed, narrow interfaces

Define one interface per business capability. A tool should accept only the fields it needs, reject unknown fields and excessive values, and return a deliberately shaped result rather than a raw database row. Keep authorization and tenant filtering inside the called service, even when the coordinator has already performed a preliminary check.

For example, a customer-support agent might have findOrders(customerId, dateRange) and createRefundDraft(orderId, amount, reason). It should not have a generic executeSql, unrestricted HTTP fetch, or an operation that silently turns a draft into a payment.

4. Add the model and orchestration layer

Configure the model client through the framework’s supported abstraction. Use structured output types for decisions that your code must parse, and keep tool descriptions precise about allowed inputs, side effects, and failure responses. Set a maximum number of tool calls per turn and a total execution deadline before enabling multi-step behavior.

5. Add retrieval only when it improves the task

Use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for long-form, factual, or context-sensitive answers that depend on enterprise material. Spring AI models retrieval and generation as modular advisors, so retrieval can be added to the calls that need it rather than forced into every request.

Choose a vector store using latency, tenant isolation, backup and restore, data residency, encryption, and operational skills as criteria. Apply document-level authorization before a chunk enters the model context. A vector similarity match is not an authorization decision: filter by tenant, role, document classification, and effective dates first.

6. Package and deploy the container

Build and scan the image, publish it to an approved registry, and deploy it to a managed container runtime. Configure liveness and readiness endpoints separately: readiness should fail when required model, database, or vector-store dependencies cannot serve traffic, while liveness should indicate whether the process itself is responsive. Configure autoscaling from workload signals that reflect model calls and queue depth, not only CPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the documented Microsoft path, the service uses Spring AI with Azure OpenAI, Azure Database for PostgreSQL with pgvector, and Azure Container Apps. Keep model keys in a managed secret store and use private networking where the platform supports it.

7. Control every agent loop

Run model-requested tools in the application loop. Set per-tool limits, a per-turn call budget, a total wall-clock deadline, and a maximum response size. Require explicit human approval for destructive or irreversible actions. If a policy check, budget, or approval fails, stop the run rather than asking the model to reinterpret the restriction.

8. Add resilience before opening traffic

Retry transient provider failures with bounded backoff, but do not blindly retry non-idempotent actions. Add circuit breakers and fallbacks around model, retrieval, and downstream services. Make mutating tools idempotent with a caller-supplied operation key. For asynchronous triggers, persist failed messages and route exhausted attempts to a dead-letter mechanism. Provide an operational kill switch that prevents new agent runs and blocks unsafe tools while leaving health and administrative access available.

9. Test the deployed behavior

Test tool authorization with users from every tenant and role, malformed and oversized arguments, prompt-injection content in documents, provider timeouts, duplicate messages, partial downstream failures, and approval rejection. Load-test with the model and vector-store limits you will actually purchase; no authoritative deployment statistic establishes universal latency, cost, reliability, or adoption for Java agents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you secure tool calling?

Security belongs at every boundary, not only in the system prompt.

  • Authenticate at ingress: verify user and service identities before creating an agent context.
  • Authorize per call: evaluate tenant, role, resource ownership, and action policy again when each tool executes.
  • Constrain schemas: use typed inputs, allow-lists, maximum lengths, enumerations, and strict rejection of unknown fields.
  • Keep secrets out of prompts: use server-side context for credentials, tenant IDs, internal metadata, and policy attributes.
  • Treat content as hostile: retrieved documents and tool outputs can contain prompt-injection instructions or data-exfiltration attempts. Delimit them as data and never let their text override application policy.
  • Gate irreversible work: require a human approval record for deletion, payment, access changes, production deployment, or other destructive actions.
  • Fail closed: stop when a budget, authorization check, schema validation, or dependency policy cannot be evaluated.
  • Record decisions safely: log the approver, policy result, tool name, request correlation ID, and a result hash without storing secrets or unnecessary document content.

When do you need RAG and a vector database?

You need RAG when the answer must be grounded in changing, private, or large document collections that cannot fit reliably in a prompt. You do not need a vector database for every agent: deterministic business lookups, transactional workflows, and short-lived context can use ordinary authorized service calls or relational queries.

Use RAG when

  • Answers depend on internal policies, manuals, tickets, contracts, or product documentation.
  • Documents change often and the model’s training data is stale or incomplete.
  • Users need citations or traceable source passages in the response.

Do not add RAG automatically when

  • The required data is a small, authoritative record available through an existing service.
  • The operation changes state and must use a transaction rather than text retrieval.
  • Latency, residency, or deletion requirements make an additional index unjustified.

Indexing should preserve document identity, tenant, classification, source version, and effective dates as metadata. At query time, apply authorization filters before similarity ranking and discard chunks that fail policy. Monitor ingestion failures and stale indexes separately from model errors.

How should you monitor cost, latency, and failures?

Instrument the complete request path, not just the model call. Track request counts, model and embedding calls, tool-call counts, token usage where the provider exposes it, latency by dependency, timeout and retry rates, retrieval hit quality, approval outcomes, and failure categories. Establish budgets per tenant, user, agent, and turn, then alert on trends against your own baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spring AI emits observations for chat, model, embedding, vector-store, and tool operations. Prompt, completion, tool-argument, and tool-result content are disabled by default because they may contain sensitive information. Keep that default unless a reviewed data policy permits capture; if enabled, apply redaction, access controls, retention limits, and regional storage rules.

Use traces to connect the ingress request, model decision, tool execution, retrieval query, approval, and final outcome through one correlation ID. Hash or tokenize sensitive identifiers so operators can diagnose failures without turning telemetry into a second data warehouse.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do you handle failures and unsafe behavior?

Provider timeout or rate limit

Respect the request deadline, retry only transient errors with bounded backoff, and return a clear degraded response when the fallback cannot meet the contract. Do not keep a user request alive indefinitely while the model retries.

Tool authorization failure

Return a policy-denied result from the application and stop the relevant branch. Do not reveal hidden resource names or invite the model to try alternate identifiers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Duplicate action

Use an idempotency key tied to the business operation and persist its outcome. A retried message should receive the original result rather than create a second refund, ticket, or deployment.

Prompt injection in a document

Keep retrieved text in a clearly marked data field, strip or neutralize executable markup, and enforce tool policy outside the model. If the content attempts to override instructions or requests secrets, record the event and refuse the unsafe step.

Runaway loop

Enforce call-count, time, token, and output-size limits in code. A limit breach should terminate the run and emit an operational signal; it should not be delegated to the model’s judgment.

How do the three approaches fit enterprise runtimes?

Spring AI is a framework layer for Spring Boot. LangChain4j is a Java-native library that can sit in several microservice runtimes and has integrations for Spring Boot, Quarkus, Helidon, and Micronaut. Jakarta Agentic AI is a CDI-oriented standard layer intended to work with Jakarta EE APIs such as REST, Persistence, Transactions, Security, and Messaging. They can therefore be evaluated by runtime ownership first, then by orchestration needs and maturity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not select Jakarta Agentic AI solely because its annotations look familiar: confirm the exact server implementation and supported Draft features. Do not select a library solely for provider count: verify that its tool execution, memory, retries, telemetry, and data-isolation behavior match your threat model.

What common deployment mistakes should you avoid?

  • Giving the model a broad backend client: replace generic database or HTTP tools with narrowly scoped business operations.
  • Putting authorization in the prompt: enforce it in the service and tool implementation.
  • Adding a vector store by default: begin with an authorized deterministic lookup when that is sufficient.
  • Logging all prompts for convenience: keep content telemetry off by default and define a reviewed exception process.
  • Allowing unbounded autonomy: set budgets, deadlines, approval gates, and a kill switch before production.
  • Retrying mutations blindly: make actions idempotent and distinguish transient reads from side-effecting writes.
  • Ignoring tenant boundaries in retrieval: filter chunks before they reach the model, not after the answer is generated.
  • Assuming a Draft standard is production-stable: verify implementation compatibility and plan for specification changes.

Which deployment path is the best starting point?

For a Spring Boot estate, start with Spring AI, a small set of typed tools, and ordinary service authorization; add RAG only for demonstrable grounding needs. For a polyglot Java runtime strategy, evaluate LangChain4j’s provider, embedding-store, resilience, and telemetry integrations. For a Jakarta EE organization that prioritizes a common CDI model, pilot Jakarta Agentic AI behind a compatibility review because the 1.0 milestone remains Draft.

Whichever path you choose, keep the model replaceable, the tools application-owned, retrieval authorization-aware, and operations measurable. That separation is what lets an agent evolve without handing business control to a prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an enterprise agent work without a vector database?

Yes. Agents that perform transactional operations or query a small authoritative data set can use existing Java services and relational queries. Add a vector index when semantic retrieval over larger, changing document collections provides a measurable benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should conversation memory be isolated between tenants?

Partition memory by an authenticated tenant and subject key, and enforce that partition in the storage service rather than trusting a prompt field. Apply retention and deletion policies to memory just as you would to other customer data.

What should a production kill switch disable?

It should prevent new agent runs and block side-effecting tools while preserving health, audit, and administrative endpoints. Keep the switch outside the model path so an unsafe response cannot re-enable the capability.

How can a team evaluate prompt-injection defenses?

Build a test corpus of hostile documents and tool outputs, then verify that authorization, secret handling, and approval policies hold even when the text contains convincing override instructions. Repeat those tests whenever prompts, tools, retrieval filters, or model providers change.
