Choose a Humblewood species by starting with the character you want to portray, then use the species’ listed ability emphasis and signature traits to support that idea. There is no universally strongest option. A Strig guardian, Corvum investigator, Raptor scout, Gallus community leader, Vulpin schemer, or any other concept can be the right choice when its story and mechanics point in the same direction.
This guide compares the ten species in the original Humblewood Campaign Setting, explains how the 2014 and 2024 D&D rules affect the choice, and notes the six newer Wesfolk options without treating them as part of the core ten.

What is Humblewood?
Humblewood is an unofficial fifth-edition D&D campaign setting from Hit Point Press, set in the woodland region of Everden. Its original campaign follows a community threatened by spreading fires and includes a complete adventure for characters from level 1 through level 5. The core Campaign Setting also supplies a bestiary, setting material and ten animal-based playable species.
Hit Point Press describes the setting as beginner-friendly while retaining enough complexity for experienced groups. That combination makes species choice unusually important: the species gives a new player a clear visual and cultural identity, while its exploration and social traits continue to matter in a longer campaign.

The ten core choices are divided into five birdfolk and five humblefolk. This article uses “species” rather than “race” because that is the terminology used by current D&D rules and the product’s current listings.
How do I choose a Humblewood species?
Use a character-first process. Mechanics should sharpen the concept you already want to play, not force you into a role you will dislike portraying.
- Write the character fantasy in one sentence. Try “a watchful crow who solves disappearances,” “a stubborn deer who keeps the caravan moving,” or “a fox negotiator who always has a second plan.” A specific sentence is more useful than starting with a class or an ability score.
- Identify the two or three traits that must be true. You might need aerial movement, nocturnal senses, physical endurance, a community-oriented identity, magical oddness, or social cunning. These requirements narrow the list without pretending that one species is objectively best.
- Use the listed ability emphasis as a tie-breaker. The current species summaries retain the familiar 2014-style emphasis, such as Intelligence for Corvum or Dexterity for Raptor. Treat those numbers as guidance, especially if your group uses a rules update that lets you assign ability increases differently.
- Read the signature traits as play promises. Glide, Darkvision, Expert Climbers, Natural Burrowers, Standing Leap and Keen Senses affect what you can attempt during travel and investigation. Social, defensive and teamwork traits can matter every session even when no attack roll is made.
- Check the Dungeon Master’s allowed rules and books. Ask whether the table uses the 2014 rules, the 2024 rules, the Campaign Setting only, or later Humblewood material. Make this check before you build around a trait or ability-score presentation that your group is not using.
- Compare two finalists in play, not only on paper. Ask which one makes your backstory easiest to imagine, which one adds a useful exploration option, and which one still sounds fun during a social scene or a quiet travel day.
Which birdfolk species fits my character?
Birdfolk share a strong woodland-and-sky identity, but their ability emphasis and named traits point toward very different personalities. All five core birdfolk listings include Glide; several also include Talons or Wing Flap.

Corvum are crow-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Intelligence emphasis. Glide and Talons establish the physical identity, while Learned and Appraising Eye support a character who notices details, collects information and understands the value of objects or clues.
Choose Corvum when the character’s appeal is curiosity, analysis or preparation. An investigator, archivist, tactician or wizardly scholar can all fit, but the species does not require an academic personality. A streetwise Corvum who applies the same observation skills to rumors and scams is equally coherent.
Gallus: the community anchor
Gallus are chicken- or rooster-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Wisdom emphasis. Glide and Wing Flap give them an aerial identity, while Communal, Militia Training and Of the People emphasize belonging, practical service and protection of ordinary neighbors.
Gallus suit a village defender, organizer, medic, spiritual guide or leader who measures success by whether everyone gets home safely. They are a natural starting point for a support-oriented character, but the same traits can support a stern militia veteran or a reluctant representative of the community.
Luma: the unusual or destiny-marked hero
Luma are dove- or pigeon-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Charisma emphasis. Glide and Wing Flap combine with Touched and Fated, making them a strong match for characters who feel mystical, socially expressive or connected to a destiny they did not choose.

Luma work for a performer, envoy, oracle, idealist or character whose presence seems to affect the people around them. The concept does not have to be solemn: a cheerful Luma who treats every coincidence as a sign can be just as distinctive.
Raptor: the mobile hunter
Raptors are hawk-, eagle- or other bird-of-prey-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Dexterity emphasis. Glide and Talons provide mobility and a natural attack identity, while Keen Senses, Woodland Hunter and Hunter’s Training reinforce scouting, tracking and life in the forest.
Raptor is the clearest starting point for a hunter, ranger, scout or hit-and-run skirmisher. It also fits a courier, falconer, border warden or former predator learning to cooperate with a settlement. Choose it because you want that alert, kinetic identity, not simply because Dexterity appears on the summary.

Strig: the imposing guardian
Strig are owl-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Strength emphasis. Their package includes Glide, Talons, Darkvision and Patterned Feathers, creating a physically imposing option that can also operate comfortably in darkness.
Strig suit a bodyguard, warrior, night watchkeeper or quiet protector. An owl-like appearance does not require a brooding personality; a friendly Strig who uses intimidating stature to keep danger away from smaller companions can be a memorable alternative.
Which humblefolk species fits my character?
Humblefolk provide five small-animal identities with a broad range of durability, magic, teamwork and social options. Their traits often describe how a character contributes to a settlement as much as how that character fights.
Cervan: the enduring traveler
Cervan are deer-like humblefolk with a listed +2 Constitution emphasis. Practical and Surge of Vigor point toward resilience, persistence and the ability to keep functioning when a journey becomes difficult.
Choose Cervan for a caravan guard, determined messenger, wilderness guide or frontliner whose defining quality is endurance. The species is also a good narrative fit for a character who carries responsibility for family or community and refuses to quit when plans go wrong.

Hedge: the defensive natural mage
Hedge are hedgehog-like humblefolk with listed +2 Charisma and +1 Wisdom emphasis. Natural Burrowers, Spiny Quills and Curl Up suggest a character who can protect themself in unusual ways, while Forest Magic and Speak With Bugs open a strongly magical, ecological identity.
Hedge works for a diplomatic herbalist, woodland mystic, empathetic mediator or deceptively tough companion. The contrast between a small, approachable appearance and defensive quills can drive the character’s humor and relationships without requiring an aggressive personality.
Jerbeen: the agile team player
Jerbeen are small mouse-like humblefolk with listed +2 Dexterity and +1 Charisma emphasis. Standing Leap and Nimbleness support movement, while Take Heart and Team Tactics point toward courage that grows when companions work together.

Mapach: the resourceful survivor
Mapach are raccoon-like humblefolk with listed +2 Wisdom and +1 Constitution emphasis. Darkvision, Expert Climbers, Resilience, Scroungecraft and Skulker form a toolkit for solving problems with observation, improvisation and whatever materials are available.
Choose Mapach for a salvager, urban explorer, camp fixer, survivalist or crafter. A Mapach can be stealthy, but the concept does not depend on being a thief; a practical character who keeps the party supplied and finds a route around obstacles uses the same identity.
Vulpin: the clever social operator
Vulpin are fox-like humblefolk with listed +2 Intelligence and +1 Charisma emphasis. Darkvision and Bite establish useful baseline capabilities, while Evasive and Bewitching Guile support a character who survives through timing, misdirection and careful conversation.

Which Humblewood species is best for a rogue, ranger, wizard or fighter?
Class is a useful filter, but it should not overrule the character concept. The following are starting points inferred from the listed emphasis and traits, not universal rankings.
| Class or role | Species to shortlist | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|
| Rogue or infiltrator | Vulpin, Corvum, Mapach, Raptor | Vulpin combines Intelligence, Charisma, Evasive and Bewitching Guile; Corvum emphasizes observation; Mapach offers climbing, stealth and improvisation; Raptor supports mobile scouting. |
| Ranger or hunter | Raptor, Mapach, Jerbeen | Raptor has the clearest hunting package; Mapach supports practical wilderness problem-solving; Jerbeen adds mobility and team-oriented energy. |
| Wizard or knowledge-focused caster | Corvum, Vulpin, Hedge | Corvum and Vulpin carry listed Intelligence emphasis, while Hedge adds Forest Magic and Speak With Bugs for a more nature-centered magical identity. |
| Fighter or guardian | Strig, Cervan, Gallus | Strig and Cervan point toward physical presence and endurance; Gallus adds a community-defense story through Militia Training and Of the People. |
| Support or social specialist | Gallus, Jerbeen, Luma, Hedge | Communal, Of the People, Take Heart, Team Tactics, Touched, Fated and the Hedge magical features all support characters whose impact extends beyond damage. |
These pairings describe a strong opening idea, not a restriction. A Corvum fighter, Strig wizard or Cervan rogue can work when the backstory and chosen class features explain the combination.
What should I compare when two species both fit?
When two finalists share a class or concept, compare them on four separate axes instead of trying to reduce the decision to one “best” statistic.
Story fit
Imagine the species’ home, family, obligations and relationships. Which option gives you immediate answers to questions such as who taught the character, what the character protects and why the character leaves home? If one finalist produces a vivid backstory while the other is merely efficient, the vivid option is usually the better long-term choice.
Primary ability emphasis
Check whether the listed emphasis supports the class you expect to play, especially in a 2014-style game. Under a 2024 character-creation approach, your table may handle ability increases differently, so confirm the current implementation rather than copying an older build guide.
Exploration and mobility
Glide, Darkvision, Expert Climbers, Natural Burrowers, Standing Leap and Keen Senses change the questions your character can ask of the environment. Consider the campaign’s likely terrain and tone: a climbing feature may be central in a vertical ruin, while Darkvision matters most in night travel and underground scenes.
Party contribution
Communal, Take Heart, Team Tactics, Practical, Resilience, Forest Magic and social features can improve the group’s options without appearing on a damage comparison. Ask what the party lacks, then use the species package to cover that gap without abandoning the personality you wanted to play.
Are Humblewood species compatible with 2024 D&D?
Yes, but the exact character-building procedure depends on the version your Dungeon Master has adopted. Hit Point Press says the core setting was designed for the 2014 rules, is compatible with the 2024 rules, and has a 2024 player-character update for its options.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The safest approach is to treat the current species listing as the reference for names and trait summaries, then follow your group’s character-creation rules for ability increases, backgrounds and other updated elements. Do not assume that a 2014 ability-score emphasis must be used unchanged in a 2024 game, and do not combine two versions of the same option without the DM’s approval.
- Ask which core D&D rules your campaign uses.
- Ask whether the DM wants the original Humblewood presentation, the 2024 player-character update, or a particular digital implementation.
- Record the exact source used on your character sheet so the table can resolve a wording question quickly.
- Choose the species traits first, then apply the allowed ability-score and background rules for that edition.
Are there more Humblewood species than the original ten?
Yes. The original Campaign Setting contains ten core species, while Hit Point Press’s current Humblewood line also lists six Wesfolk species: Capran, Eluran, Mustel, Seeta, Sylph and Tilia. Those options belong to the broader product line rather than the original ten-species comparison.
Humblewood Tales is described as a sourcebook and adventure anthology that expands the first book. It is not required to choose among Corvum, Gallus, Luma, Raptor, Strig, Cervan, Hedge, Jerbeen, Mapach and Vulpin. Use Wesfolk options only when the DM has approved the relevant book and the campaign’s setting can accommodate them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat common mistakes make species choice harder?
- Picking from a tier list. No canonical source establishes a universal strongest Humblewood species, and there is no published win-rate study that would justify one. A species with a perfect numerical fit can still be a poor choice if its story does not interest you.
- Treating the listed ability emphasis as mandatory. It is a useful 2014-style signal, not a substitute for checking the rules version your table uses.
- Ignoring noncombat traits. Mobility, senses, climbing, burrowing, teamwork and social features often create solutions before initiative is rolled.
- Choosing by animal silhouette alone. Ask what the character does in the community and why they adventure. The cultural and trait package should be as appealing as the appearance.
- Mixing sourcebooks silently. A later Wesfolk option, a 2024 update and an older character guide may assume different wording. Put the source and edition on the character sheet and clear the combination with the DM.
- Forcing the party role. Covering a missing scout or support role is helpful, but a group can solve its gaps through classes, backgrounds and tactics. Do not discard the character you actually want to roleplay merely to fill a theoretical slot.
What Humblewood book do I need?
To choose among the original species, the Humblewood Campaign Setting is the central source. Hit Point Press describes the hardcover as containing the setting, playable species, adventure and bestiary; its current product page marks that hardcover sold out. The original adventure covers levels 1 through 5.
A digital D&D Beyond edition is useful if your group wants compendium access and Character Builder support. Humblewood Tales is an optional follow-on for groups that want additional adventures and setting material, not a prerequisite for selecting one of the core ten species. Confirm the edition and source permissions with the DM before buying or importing an option.
How we selected the starting points in this guide
The recommendations use the official species identities, the listed ability emphasis and the named traits in the current species summaries. They also consider whether a package clearly supports a story archetype, an exploration approach or a party contribution. They are starting points rather than a power ranking, because the available material does not establish a single best species or comparative class performance.
For a final decision, read the two species entries side by side, say each concept aloud as a one-sentence backstory, and choose the option you will still enjoy portraying when the session is about conversation, travel or investigation rather than combat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Humblewood an official D&D setting?
Humblewood is an unofficial D&D campaign setting created under the Open Gaming License, published by Hit Point Press. It is designed for fifth-edition play, but your Dungeon Master still decides which books and rules updates are permitted at the table.
Can I use a Humblewood species in a different campaign setting?
Usually this is a table-permission question rather than a rules problem. A DM can keep the species’ mechanics while relocating its culture, homeland or visual details, or can require a setting-specific explanation before allowing it.
Do I have to play a birdfolk character to use Glide?
No core choice is mandatory for a player, and the species list includes five humblefolk options alongside the five birdfolk. If aerial identity is important, compare the birdfolk traits directly; if not, choose the humblefolk concept that best fits your story.
Should I buy Humblewood Tales before creating my character?
No. Humblewood Tales expands the setting with additional material, but it is not required to choose among the ten original species. Start with the source your DM has approved for the campaign, then add later options only if the group wants them.
