For most people, PS5 backward compatibility is the easiest choice only when the game is a supported PS4 release. It does not turn an original PS2 disc into a PS5 game. If you own original PS2 discs and want to use them, PCSX2 on a suitable computer is the relevant route, but you must provide a BIOS dumped from your own PS2 and prepare your game discs or disc images. PlayStation Plus Premium is a separate option for selected classics, with title, region, download, streaming and catalog-retention limits. The better option depends on the exact game, the software and hardware you already own, whether your PS5 has a usable disc drive, and how much setup or subscription access you accept.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
PS5 PS4 backward compatibility Playing supported PS4 games you already own Sony says the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games run on PS5; select titles may receive Game Boost PS5 console; compatible PS4 discs or digital purchases Nov 2026
PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog Accessing selected older games without maintaining a full PS2 setup Download or streaming depends on the individual title; streaming requires at least 5 Mbps, and eligible 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps PS5 and supported PlayStation streaming devices or apps Nov 2026
PCSX2 Playing personally sourced PS2 software on a computer Free, open-source PS2 emulator; requires a BIOS dumped from your own PS2 Windows, Linux and macOS computers that meet the project’s requirements Nov 2026

The rows are different kinds of solutions rather than interchangeable products: a PS5 runs supported PS4 software, Premium grants access to a changing catalog, and PCSX2 emulates PS2 software from files or discs you supply.

Which option is better for your games?

Choose the option that matches the software you actually want to play. A PS4 edition in your library is normally the lowest-friction path on PS5. An original PS2 disc points toward PCSX2, provided you can dump a BIOS from your own console and prepare the game media. A title in the current Classics Catalog may be convenient through Premium, but its availability and delivery mode must be checked in the US listing at the time you play.

Use PS5 backward compatibility when

  • You own a compatible PS4 disc or digital purchase.
  • You want console setup, trophies and saves handled within the PlayStation ecosystem.
  • Your PS5 has a working disc drive if your copy is physical.
  • You are comfortable checking the individual game’s compatibility notes rather than assuming every PS4 title behaves identically.

Use PCSX2 when

  • Your target is an original PS2 release that has no suitable PS4 version or current catalog listing.
  • You own the game and can create your own disc image or read the disc directly.
  • You have access to a PS2 for a personal BIOS dump and a computer that meets PCSX2’s requirements.
  • You want local play without relying on a subscription catalog or streaming connection.

Consider Premium when

  • The exact game appears in the current Classics Catalog for your region.
  • You prefer an official PS5 option and do not want to maintain a PS2 BIOS and disc-image workflow.
  • You accept that a catalog game can be removed and that download and streaming availability differ by title.

Can a PS5 play original PS2 discs?

No. Ordinary PS5 backward compatibility is for supported PS4 software, not a general original-PS2-disc feature. Sony’s 2020 launch FAQ described PS5 as playing PS5 and compatible PS4 games; that statement addressed launch compatibility and should not be read as a claim that every later classic-catalog offering is unavailable. Current Premium documentation describes selected older titles separately.

Putting a PS2 disc into a PS5 does not create a PS4 entitlement, and a PS5 accepting PS4 discs does not imply that it can read PS2 game data. A PS2 disc is also not a catalog entitlement: if Sony offers that game through Premium, the listing itself determines whether it can be downloaded or streamed.

What the PS5 disc models change

A supported physical PS4 game needs a PS5 model with usable disc-drive access. Sony states that PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. The disc remains inserted whenever you play that installed disc-based game, so a disc drive is a continuing requirement rather than a one-time installation detail.

Digital PS4 purchases are handled differently: sign in to the account that owns the game, open the game library, and download the compatible PS5 version or PS4 version offered for that title. Compatibility is title-specific, and some games can lose features or behave unexpectedly on PS5.

Can I play my PS4 games on PS5?

Usually, yes. Sony says the overwhelming majority of its 4,000-plus PS4 games are playable on PS5. That is Sony’s stated library and compatibility description, not an independently audited count, and it does not guarantee identical behavior for every title.

For a digital PS4 purchase

  1. Sign in to the PlayStation account that bought the game.
  2. Open the PS5 game library and filter for your purchased PS4 titles.
  3. Select the game and choose the available download or version option.
  4. Install updates before launching. Check the title’s store or support notes if the game offers more than one version.

For a physical PS4 copy

  1. Confirm that the PS5 has a working disc drive; a Digital Edition cannot use the disc.
  2. Insert the compatible PS4 disc and follow the on-screen installation prompt.
  3. Install any listed update.
  4. Leave the disc inserted whenever you start the installed game, because it serves as the ownership check.

What Game Boost does—and does not—promise

Game Boost can improve selected PS4 titles, but Sony does not promise one universal frame-rate, resolution or feature result. Individual games can retain their original behavior, gain a documented enhancement, or have a known limitation. Check the particular title instead of treating “PS4 playable on PS5” as a performance guarantee.

How is PlayStation Plus Premium different from backward compatibility?

Premium’s Classics Catalog is an access service, not a hardware compatibility layer. You find a title in the current catalog, confirm the delivery method shown for your US account, and then download or stream it according to that listing. Catalog membership does not make an unrelated PS2 disc playable on PS5.

Download versus stream

A downloadable classic is installed on the console under the terms shown for that title. A streamed classic runs from Sony’s service, so network quality and service availability matter. Sony publishes a minimum 5 Mbps connection for streaming and at least 15 Mbps for eligible 1080p streaming; those are connection thresholds, not measured guarantees of latency or image quality.

Why catalog checks matter

  • Titles vary by country and can change over time.
  • Some games offer download, some offer streaming, and some may offer both.
  • A game can leave the catalog, so continued access is not the same as owning a disc or digital purchase.
  • The current US store or catalog page is the authority for the title, plan and delivery mode on the day you subscribe or play.

Sony’s 2022 guide discussed downloadable PS2 remasters, remakes and original PS2 titles offered through Premium streaming, while current support pages describe the live catalog. Treat those as separate, time-sensitive descriptions rather than a promise that every PS2-era game is available today.

What is PCSX2, and what do I need?

PCSX2 is a free, open-source PlayStation 2 emulator for computers. It recreates the PS2 hardware environment so that personally sourced PS2 software can run locally. The project requires a BIOS dumped from the user’s own PS2 and supports original discs or disc images made from those discs.

Required components

  • A computer supported by the current PCSX2 system requirements. Compatibility and speed vary with the computer, emulator settings and game.
  • A working PS2 from which you can make a personal BIOS dump.
  • The original game disc or a disc image you created from your own disc.
  • Storage for the emulator, BIOS files, memory-card data and game images.
  • If the computer lacks a suitable optical drive, a compatible USB external DVD/CD drive can be used to read owned discs; drive compatibility still needs to be confirmed.

BIOS and disc ownership

PCSX2’s documentation directs users to dump a BIOS from their own PS2. Owning a game disc does not mean you should download a BIOS or game image from an unverified website. Copyright and format-shifting rules vary by jurisdiction, so keep the workflow to software and firmware you are entitled to use and consult local law when uncertain.

Typical PCSX2 setup

  1. Download PCSX2 from the project’s official distribution channel and install the version appropriate for your operating system.
  2. Use the project’s BIOS-dumping guide to create a BIOS dump from your own PS2; copy it to the location selected by PCSX2.
  3. Insert your original disc or create a disc image with a compatible optical drive and the project’s documented method.
  4. Open PCSX2’s first-run configuration, select the BIOS region you dumped, and choose a graphics renderer appropriate for your computer.
  5. Point the game-directory setting at your disc image folder, or select the optical drive for direct-disc use.
  6. Start the game, create a virtual memory card, and review the individual game’s compatibility notes if you encounter glitches.

The PCSX2 compatibility list contains more than 2,500 tested listings according to the project’s live README. “Tested” means a listing exists; it does not mean every title is flawless or that your computer will produce the same result.

How do the three routes compare?

Decision factor PS5 PS4 compatibility PCSX2 Premium Classics Catalog
Software source Compatible PS4 disc or digital purchase Your PS2 disc or your own disc image Title listed in the current catalog
Original PS2 disc Not supported by ordinary backward compatibility Supported through direct disc use or a personal disc dump, with your own BIOS required Not an entitlement; the catalog listing controls access
Hardware PS5; disc model required for physical games Suitable Windows, Linux or macOS computer plus a PS2 for BIOS dumping PS5 and supported streaming/download infrastructure
Internet dependence Downloads and updates need internet; an owned disc is a separate route from membership access Local play after setup; game and BIOS files must be available locally Streaming needs at least 5 Mbps, or at least 15 Mbps for eligible 1080p streaming
Ownership model Owned PS4 disc or digital license Personally sourced software and BIOS Subscription and continued listing
Performance certainty Game Boost applies only to selected titles; no universal promise Depends on PC hardware, settings and game compatibility Download and streaming differ; no universal latency or image-quality winner is established

Which route fits common situations?

“I own a PS4 disc and a disc-drive PS5.”

Start with PS5 backward compatibility. Verify that exact game, install it from the disc, apply updates and keep the disc inserted. Do not buy a PS2 version expecting the PS5 to recognize it as the same software.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

“I own only an original PS2 disc.”

Check Premium’s current catalog first if convenience matters. If the game is absent, or if you want local ownership of your own dump, PCSX2 is the relevant technical path. You will need access to a PS2 for the BIOS dump and a computer that satisfies PCSX2’s requirements.

“I have a PS5 Digital Edition.”

Physical PS4 discs are unavailable to that console model. Use compatible digital PS4 purchases or an eligible Premium catalog title. Neither option makes an original PS2 disc directly usable.

“I want the least setup.”

A compatible digital PS4 release is generally simpler than PCSX2 because there is no BIOS-dumping or disc-imaging workflow. Premium can also be simple when the title is listed and streaming or downloading fits your connection and preferences.

What can go wrong, and how do you recover?

The PS4 disc is not recognized

  • Confirm the disc is a PS4 game and that the console is not a Digital Edition.
  • Clean the disc and test another known-good disc to distinguish media damage from a drive issue.
  • Check the game’s support page for region, upgrade or compatibility notes.

A PS4 game runs differently on PS5

  • Install the latest game and system updates.
  • Read the title-specific compatibility notes; some features can be missing or unexpected.
  • Disable optional enhancement settings only if the game’s documented troubleshooting recommends it.

A Premium classic is unavailable

  • Check that your account region is the US region covered by this guide.
  • Search the current Classics Catalog rather than relying on an old list.
  • Confirm whether the title is download-only, stream-only or available by both methods.
  • Remember that catalog membership does not preserve a title after Sony removes it.

PCSX2 will not start a game

  • Verify that PCSX2 detects a valid BIOS dumped from your own PS2.
  • Confirm that the disc image was created correctly or that the optical drive can read the original disc.
  • Compare the game with PCSX2’s compatibility listing and use the documented per-game settings.
  • Update graphics drivers and select a renderer supported by your computer before changing advanced options.

How was this recommendation determined?

The comparison separates three different questions: whether a PS4 release runs on PS5, whether a selected classic is currently offered through Premium, and whether personally sourced PS2 software can be emulated on a computer. The criteria are the documented software source, hardware and disc requirements, BIOS and dumping effort, subscription and network dependence, catalog permanence, and the uncertainty of game-specific compatibility. No direct gameplay, latency, image-quality or hardware benchmark was used, so the article does not claim a universal speed or visual winner.

Bottom line: choose by the game, not the label

Use PS5 backward compatibility for compatible PS4 games you already own, Premium for a currently listed classic when its access model suits you, and PCSX2 for original PS2 software you can legitimately source and prepare. The key check is the exact title: distinguish an original PS2 disc from a PS4 remaster or release, and distinguish both from a temporary catalog entitlement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does owning a PS2 disc let me download its PS5 version?

No. A physical PS2 purchase does not automatically grant a PS4 or PS5 digital license. You need a separately supported PS4 release, a current Classics Catalog entitlement, or your own PCSX2 setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to keep the PS2 connected while using PCSX2?

The PS2 is needed to create the personal BIOS dump. After the BIOS and game files are prepared, PCSX2 runs on the computer, although you may need the console again if you create another BIOS dump or troubleshoot the source files.

Can a Premium game disappear after I download it?

Yes. Classics Catalog availability can change, and continued access follows the service’s current listing and membership terms. Check the title’s status before assuming a downloaded classic is a permanent purchase.

Is a PS4 remaster the same as emulating the original PS2 game?

No. A remaster or remake is a separate release built for a newer platform, while PCSX2 runs PS2 software in an emulated environment. Menus, patches, controls and performance can therefore differ even when the game name is similar.
