For diversification across countries, a broad emerging-markets (EM) ETF is usually the stronger starting point. A China ETF holds one country by design, while an EM ETF spreads exposure across several countries—although many EM funds already allocate substantially to China. Buying both can therefore increase, rather than reduce, your China concentration. The right choice depends on the exposure your existing portfolio lacks, each fund’s country and sector weights, index methodology, fees, trading costs and your tolerance for country, regulatory and currency risk. The figures below are dated issuer or index-provider disclosures, not forecasts of returns or volatility.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Price / expense ratio Checked
MCHI (China ETF) An intentional single-country China allocation 578 holdings; top 10 are 41.40%; Tencent 13.79%, Alibaba 9.33% 0.59% expense ratio Oct 2026
IEMG (broad EM ETF) Broad large-, mid- and small-cap emerging-market exposure 2,851 holdings; Taiwan 29.18%, South Korea 19.42%, China 18.22%, India 12.42% 0.09% expense ratio Oct 2026
VWO (broad FTSE EM ETF) Low-cost broad EM exposure under a different index family 6,507 fund stocks; Taiwan 35.1%, China 26.0%, India 16.0% 0.06% expense ratio Oct 2026
EMXC (EM excluding China) Emerging-market diversification with China deliberately removed 607 holdings; Taiwan 36.40%, South Korea 23.93%, information technology 49.56% 0.25% expense ratio Oct 2026
IXUS (total international ETF) A wider non-U.S. core spanning developed and emerging markets 4,579 holdings across developed and emerging markets 0.07% expense ratio Oct 2026

Holdings and weights are snapshots from the dates shown by each issuer; they change over time. MCHI figures come from BlackRock’s September 30, 2026 fact sheet. IEMG data are from BlackRock’s October 28, 2026 fund page. VWO data are from Vanguard’s September 30, 2026 fact sheet. EMXC data are from BlackRock’s October 27, 2026 page. IXUS data are from BlackRock’s October 28, 2026 page.

What does “better diversification” mean in this comparison?

Here, diversification means spreading investment exposure across countries, companies and sectors rather than concentrating it in one market. It does not mean guaranteeing lower volatility, protecting principal or producing higher returns. A fund can own thousands of stocks and still be concentrated in a few countries, industries or large companies.

A China-only ETF is a deliberate country view. BlackRock describes MCHI as a way to “express a single-country view and gain targeted exposure to companies in China.” Its holdings count is large, but every holding is tied primarily to the same national market, policy environment, currency and regulatory regime.

A broad EM ETF distributes exposure among several emerging economies, but the distribution is market-cap weighted and differs by index provider. China may still be one of the largest country positions. Consequently, “EM” is broader than “China-only,” not necessarily evenly balanced.

Does an emerging-markets ETF already own China?

Yes, ordinary broad EM ETFs generally already own China. The October 28, 2026 country breakdown for IEMG showed China at 18.22%, alongside Taiwan at 29.18%, South Korea at 19.42% and India at 12.42%. VWO’s September 30, 2026 allocations showed China at 26.0%, Taiwan at 35.1% and India at 16.0%.

Those are not universal EM weights. IEMG follows an MSCI-based approach covering large-, mid- and small-cap emerging-market equities, while VWO follows the FTSE Emerging Markets index family. Different classification rules, eligible securities, rebalancing schedules and capitalization coverage produce different country results.

If you add a China ETF to a broad EM fund, you are normally adding an overweight to China, not filling an empty gap. The exact overlap must be checked at the security level because the two funds may hold the same companies through different index methodologies. A U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing describes MCHI’s benchmark as Chinese securities included in MSCI emerging-market indexes, supporting the possibility of substantial overlap; review current constituent files before calculating it. See the SEC-hosted filing.

How concentrated is a China-only ETF?

MCHI’s September 30, 2026 fact sheet listed 578 holdings and a 0.59% expense ratio. Tencent represented 13.79% of the portfolio, Alibaba 9.33%, and the ten largest positions together accounted for 41.40%. The reported three-year standard deviation was 20.90%.

The holdings count can make a fund look widely spread at first glance, but the country exposure remains China-only and the largest issuers have meaningful weights. Company-specific events, Chinese regulatory changes, accounting or disclosure concerns, market-access rules and the renminbi’s value can affect much of the portfolio at once. Those are concentration characteristics, not a prediction about the fund’s future performance.

MCHI can be appropriate when the purpose is an explicit China tilt and the investor accepts that concentration. It is a poor label for geographic diversification because it does not add countries outside China.

How broad are IEMG and VWO in practice?

IEMG reported 2,851 holdings as of October 28, 2026 and a 0.09% expense ratio. Its country weights were Taiwan 29.18%, South Korea 19.42%, China 18.22% and India 12.42%; information technology represented 40.73%. This is broad country coverage, but it is also a substantial technology and Asia concentration.

VWO reported 6,507 fund stocks on September 30, 2026 and a 0.06% expense ratio. Its displayed market allocations were Taiwan 35.1%, China 26.0% and India 16.0%. South Korea did not appear in the displayed top-ten market allocations, unlike IEMG’s 19.42% weight. That contrast shows why two funds both called “emerging markets” should not be treated as interchangeable.

More holdings do not automatically mean better diversification. Compare the country list, the size segments included, sector weights and the index provider’s market classifications. An investor who wants small-cap exposure should verify that the chosen mandate includes it; IEMG explicitly describes large-, mid- and small-cap EM equities, while other products may use a narrower universe.

Would an emerging-markets ETF excluding China solve the concentration problem?

It solves one problem—direct China exposure—but creates a different concentration profile. EMXC is designed to track large- and mid-cap emerging-market equities while excluding China. BlackRock displayed 607 holdings and a 0.25% expense ratio on October 27, 2026. Its country weights included Taiwan at 36.40% and South Korea at 23.93%; information technology was 49.56%.

The underlying MSCI Emerging Markets ex China index provides a useful, separate reference point. On September 30, 2026 it covered 23 of the 24 emerging-market countries excluding China and 589 constituents. Taiwan accounted for 36.09%, South Korea 26.68%, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing 19.49%, and information technology 51.76%.

The MSCI numbers are index figures, not EMXC fund holdings. Do not combine the September index snapshot with EMXC’s October fund snapshot or present either as a permanent allocation. Ex-China products offer control over China exposure, not equal country weights or low technology concentration. They may suit an investor who already has China elsewhere, has a specific policy or mandate constraint, or wants to make China a separate decision.

Why do VWO and IEMG have different country weights?

The main reason is that they track different index families. MSCI and FTSE can classify markets differently, define eligible securities differently and apply different rules for investability, inclusion, free float and size bands. Their reconstitution calendars and the funds’ implementation methods also affect the displayed weights.

IEMG’s October 2026 country mix placed South Korea at 19.42%, while VWO’s cited top-ten display did not list South Korea and showed a higher Taiwan weight of 35.1%. Neither figure is “the” correct emerging-markets allocation; each is correct for its stated mandate and date. Compare the methodology documents and current holdings rather than choosing by a single country percentage.

Is a China ETF plus a broad EM ETF redundant?

It can be redundant for diversification and intentional for allocation. The broad fund already supplies China exposure, so adding MCHI generally raises China’s share while leaving the rest of the EM countries largely unchanged. The combination may be reasonable only when the investor knowingly wants that extra China weight and has checked the resulting issuer and sector overlap.

Use a portfolio-level calculation instead of judging each ETF in isolation. For example, if 10% of a portfolio is invested in IEMG and its China weight is 18.22%, that sleeve contributes approximately 1.822% of the total portfolio to China before counting any other China holdings. The calculation is:

portfolio sleeve weight × fund’s current China weight = portfolio China exposure from that sleeve

Apply the same calculation to every EM, China, international and individual-stock position, then add the results. Recompute when fund weights or your holdings change. This is an illustration of the method, not an allocation recommendation.

What should you compare before choosing a fund?

Look beyond the fund name. The following checks identify whether a product actually fills a gap in your portfolio.

Country breadth and concentration

  • List every country represented and the weight of the largest country.
  • Check whether China is already held elsewhere, including international funds and individual companies.
  • Review Taiwan, South Korea, India and other large positions rather than assuming “ex-China” means evenly spread.

Issuer and sector concentration

  • Inspect the top ten holdings and the largest single-company weight.
  • Compare technology and other sector totals. IEMG’s cited technology weight was 40.73%; EMXC’s was 49.56%.
  • Check for duplicated companies when combining funds from different providers.

Index methodology

  • Confirm whether the fund includes large-, mid- and small-cap stocks.
  • Read how the index defines emerging-market status, investability and foreign ownership limits.
  • Keep index-provider data separate from the ETF’s own holdings and valuation data.

Costs and trading friction

  • Compare the stated expense ratio, which is deducted from fund assets.
  • Allow for the bid–ask spread, brokerage commission if applicable and any premium or discount to net asset value.
  • Use the fund’s ordinary trading volume and spread information for your own brokerage and time of purchase; a low expense ratio does not eliminate trading costs.

Risk you are willing to carry

  • Country and regulatory risk can be concentrated in a China-only position.
  • Currency movements can affect returns measured in your home currency.
  • Emerging-market securities can lose principal. Vanguard states in its VWO fact sheet: “All ETF products are subject to risk, which may result in the loss of principal.”

How do ETFs trade, and why does that matter here?

ETF shares are bought and sold through a brokerage account during market hours. The trading price can be above or below the fund’s net asset value, particularly when underlying markets are closed, stressed or difficult to access. A quoted expense ratio therefore does not describe the entire cost of entering or exiting a position.

Could a total-international ETF be a better starting point?

If your portfolio has little or no non-U.S. equity exposure, a total-international fund may address a broader need than either a China-only or EM-only ETF. IXUS tracks large-, mid- and small-cap non-U.S. equities across both developed and emerging markets. Its October 28, 2026 page showed 4,579 holdings and a 0.07% expense ratio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That broader mandate does not make IXUS automatically preferable. It changes the question from “Which emerging-market exposure should I add?” to “Do I need developed and emerging non-U.S. markets together?” Compare its country, regional and sector weights with the rest of your portfolio before treating it as a core holding.

Which choice fits common portfolio situations?

You want the widest country spread among the options

Start by examining a broad EM ETF such as IEMG or VWO, then compare its country and sector concentration. Choose between them based on methodology, holdings, costs and overlap—not on the label alone.

You specifically want more China

A China ETF is the transparent way to express that tilt, but measure the resulting China percentage after adding existing EM and international holdings. MCHI’s top-ten and single-company weights make the tilt materially different from simply owning a broad EM fund.

You already have substantial China exposure

An EM-ex-China fund can prevent another direct China allocation, while leaving exposure to other emerging markets. Check whether the resulting Taiwan, South Korea and technology weights fit your objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You have no broad international allocation

Compare a total-international option such as IXUS with an EM-only fund. Developed-market exposure may be the missing component, and an EM-only choice can unintentionally narrow the portfolio.

You are deciding between funds for a tax-advantaged or taxable account

Review your jurisdiction’s tax rules, withholding treatment, foreign-exchange costs and account restrictions with a qualified professional. The diversification comparison cannot determine which account is most efficient for your circumstances.

What are the main pitfalls?

  • Confusing holdings count with diversification: hundreds of stocks can still represent one country and a few dominant issuers.
  • Assuming EM means equal country weights: market-cap weighting naturally produces large positions in the biggest investable markets.
  • Adding China twice by accident: broad EM funds commonly include China, so inspect the incremental exposure.
  • Mixing dates and data types: issuer fund weights, index weights and fact-sheet dates are not interchangeable.
  • Using recent returns as a diversification test: performance rankings do not reveal country overlap or concentration.
  • Ignoring trading price: spreads and premiums or discounts can matter even when the expense ratio is low.
  • Assuming ex-China means balanced: EMXC’s cited Taiwan and technology weights demonstrate the remaining concentration.

How we picked the comparison funds

The examples were selected to show the major exposure choices a reader can make: a China-only fund (MCHI), two broad EM funds using different index families (IEMG and VWO), an EM-ex-China fund (EMXC), and a wider developed-plus-emerging international fund (IXUS). The comparison uses each issuer’s stated mandate, dated holdings, country and sector weights, expense ratio and the practical overlap and trading issues relevant to diversification. It does not rank expected returns and does not imply that one fund is suitable for every investor.

What is the bottom-line decision?

Choose a broad EM ETF when your primary objective is spreading emerging-market exposure across countries. Choose a China ETF only when you deliberately want a single-country China tilt and accept the accompanying concentration. If China exposure is already high, evaluate an EM-ex-China fund—but verify its Taiwan, South Korea and technology weights. If your portfolio lacks developed-market exposure too, compare a total-international mandate before narrowing the decision to China versus EM.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I recalculate my China exposure?

Recalculate whenever you add or sell a fund, and whenever a fund publishes a materially changed country breakdown or rebalances. Use current constituent data because market movements can change weights even when you make no trade.

Does excluding China remove all China-related risk?

No. Companies domiciled elsewhere can have Chinese customers, suppliers or revenue, and broad multinational funds may still be economically exposed to China. An ex-China index removes the securities defined as Chinese by its methodology, not every business relationship with China.

Are emerging-markets ETFs suitable for a conservative investor?

Suitability depends on your time horizon, loss capacity, currency and country-risk tolerance, not on the number of countries in the fund. Vanguard explicitly warns that ETF investors can lose principal and that emerging-market and currency risks can be heightened.

Why can an ETF price differ from its net asset value?

ETF shares trade between investors on an exchange, while the net asset value is calculated from the underlying holdings. Market hours, liquidity, currency movements and stressed conditions can temporarily create a premium or discount.
