If your electronic chessboard will not connect to Chess.com, first find the link that is failing: the board-to-device connection, the manufacturer’s app or integration, or the device’s internet connection to Chess.com. Chess.com supports electronic boards, but directs players to the board maker to confirm model compatibility and get setup help. Check your board’s exact model and its documented Chess.com connection route before resetting it or changing settings.
Identify where the connection fails
An e-board setup can involve several separate links. A board may connect to a phone over Bluetooth while its app is not authorized for Chess.com; a phone may remain on Wi-Fi while its route to Chess.com’s live-game servers is interrupted. Pinpointing the failure keeps you from treating every problem as a board defect or a Chess.com outage.
- Write down the equipment: note the board maker and exact model, your phone, tablet or computer model, and its operating system.
- Identify the software route: note the board app, browser extension, bridge or other integration you use, and whether the documented connection is Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB or another method.
- Record the failure point: does the board fail to power on, stay missing from its app, appear in the app but not connect to Chess.com, or connect and then stop syncing moves?
Chess.com’s smart-board guidance says to contact the manufacturer to confirm compatibility and get setup support. Compatibility is model- and integration-specific; the Chess.com support statement is not a guarantee that every electronic board works with every device or play mode.
Check board power and local detection
Turn the board on and put it in the connection mode described by its manufacturer. Open the maker’s app or the documented integration and check whether it detects the board before troubleshooting Chess.com. If the app cannot see it, focus on the board-to-device link: follow the model’s pairing instructions and verify any permissions the maker requires.

Do not assume the operating system’s Bluetooth settings are the correct pairing route. For example, Chessnut’s app manual says to start pairing from its app rather than manually pairing in phone Bluetooth settings. Its Move quick guide describes a flashing Bluetooth indicator during pairing and a solid indicator after connection. These are Chessnut-specific directions, not universal instructions for DGT or other boards. See the Chessnut app manual and Chessnut Move quick guide.
If the app still does not detect the board, consult the manufacturer’s steps for your exact model and host operating system. Avoid a factory reset, firmware downgrade or replacement-part purchase unless the model-specific documentation or support team recommends it.

Separate board pairing from Chess.com access
If the board appears in its app, local pairing is working; that does not necessarily mean the Chess.com game session has been authorized or started. In the app or bridge, check the selected site or account and any integration permission it requires. Then start a fresh game using the documented e-board workflow and check whether moves register in both directions.
If the app sees the board but Chess.com does not, review the maker’s instructions for the integration and supported game mode. When compatibility or authorization steps are unclear, ask the board maker, as Chess.com’s guidance recommends.

Check the internet and Chess.com connection
Once the board and its app can communicate, investigate the device-to-Chess.com link. Chess.com’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing competing network and device activity, updating software, and checking connection quality. Try the steps that match your setup:
- Pause large downloads or uploads and streaming; close unnecessary apps, browser tabs and resource-heavy programs.
- For web play, update the browser, temporarily disable extensions that may interfere, and clear Chess.com-related cookies or cache if the site continues to misbehave.
- Use stable Wi-Fi, move closer to the router, or connect by Ethernet where practical. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, test another stable connection.
- Restart the modem or router and test the connection speed. A strong Wi-Fi signal alone does not prove the route to Chess.com’s game servers is working.
- On mobile, close other apps and update the operating system and Chess.com app. Reinstall the app only if simpler app-level steps have not helped.

Check ping during a live-game connection problem
Chess.com says you can check ping from the lobby at chess.com/play/online: open the board console and enter /ping. During an active game, enter /ping in the chat box instead. Take several readings with short pauses because the first can be slower. The command does not work while you are observing a game. Ping is a network diagnostic, not a test of whether the board is paired or compatible.
Keep the live-game session active
Do not switch between Wi-Fi and cellular in the middle of a game, and avoid backgrounding the relevant app. Chess.com notes that a device can still show router connectivity even when its path to game servers has failed. Its disconnection and abandonment guidance also describes device and browser performance, network changes and backgrounding as possible contributors.

For live games, that help page says the disconnect timer is 10% of the base time plus 40 times the increment, with a minimum of 30 seconds and a maximum of three minutes; it starts when it is the disconnected player’s turn. This is relevant to a game already in progress, not a method for diagnosing local Bluetooth pairing.

If the board’s own app cannot detect it, contact the manufacturer. Include the exact model, serial number or firmware version if known, host device and operating system, app or integration version, connection method, failure point and steps already tried. A screenshot or short recording of the error can help support reproduce the problem.
If the board app sees it but Chess.com alone fails, provide the Chess.com app or browser version and any ping readings when contacting Chess.com support. If the connection problems persist after Chess.com’s suggested network checks, its help guidance recommends contacting your internet provider. The Realtime Chess Network article describes Chess.com infrastructure, but its network figures do not establish that a particular e-board or home connection is healthy.
