If you want a VPN billed for one month rather than a multi-year commitment, Mullvad has the lowest clearly stated direct price in the available 2026 data: €5 for one month. A September 30, 2026 comparison lists Proton VPN at $9.99, PrivadoVPN at $10.99 and NordVPN at $14.99 per month in a US-oriented snapshot. Those figures are not interchangeable: currencies, taxes, plan tiers, checkout channels and renewal terms can change the amount you see.
The practical answer is to compare the true one-month charge—not the monthly arithmetic shown for a plan paid several months or years upfront. The prices below are dated reference points, not guarantees of what your local checkout will show on October 25, 2026.
What is the cheapest monthly VPN plan in 2026?
Mullvad’s direct monthly subscription is the clearest low-cost benchmark at €5 per month. Its product page says one account supports up to five devices, while its terms, updated January 20, 2026, explain that the €5 rate applies when you buy directly. App-store and official-reseller prices can differ, so €5 is not automatically the cheapest amount in every country or purchase channel.

Which prices are genuinely month-to-month?
A genuine month-to-month plan charges for a single billing period and lets you stop after that period. A “$2.49 per month” label on a two-year offer is only a monthly equivalent: the provider charges the full term upfront, and the amount may change at renewal.

The table is useful for choosing a starting point, but it is not a universal ranking. €5 and $9.99 are different currencies, and a conversion rate changes daily. Your country, tax treatment, plan tier and whether you subscribe on a provider website or through an app store can all change the final total.
How do monthly VPN prices differ from long-term offers?
Long-term promotions reduce the arithmetic monthly rate by collecting a larger amount at once. That can be good value if you know you will keep the service, but it does not answer the question “What will I pay for one month?”
Check the amount charged today

How should I compare the cheapest plans fairly?
Use the same assumptions for every provider. A fair comparison fixes the country, currency, billing term, tier and purchase channel before you compare totals.

- Record the checkout total. Include currency, taxes or VAT shown, and any extra fee. Do not convert currencies until you have recorded the original amount.
- Record renewal language. Save the renewal price and date if the provider displays them. Introductory pricing is not a reliable estimate of the second billing period.
- Confirm the cancellation and refund rules. The purchase channel can determine where a refund must be requested.
Is Mullvad the best choice for a one-month subscription?
Mullvad is the strongest candidate when your priority is a plainly stated monthly price and the flexibility to buy only one period. The direct rate is €5, and its product page states that one account supports up to five devices.
Its terms say subscriptions expire at the end of the purchased period. They also describe a 14-day money-back guarantee, with exceptions for cash and cryptocurrency payments. If you bought through an app store or an official reseller, the terms direct you to request the refund from that seller rather than from Mullvad.
Those conditions make the direct web purchase materially different from an app-store purchase. Check the currency conversion and the seller’s refund process before paying, especially if you need a short-term subscription for travel or a temporary project.
What does a one-month NordVPN subscription cost?
The 2026 US pricing snapshot shows three one-month tiers rather than one universal price:
- Basic: $14.99 for one month.
- Complete: $19.99 for one month.
- Prime: $29.99 for one month.
The tier matters. Calling NordVPN “$14.99 a month” without saying Basic would mislead readers considering Complete or Prime. The same pricing page also presents long-term plans with lower introductory monthly equivalents and separate renewal amounts, so those offers belong in a commitment comparison, not in a list of true one-month prices.

How reliable are the Proton VPN and PrivadoVPN monthly figures?
The available comparison published by Tom’s Guide on September 30, 2026 lists Proton VPN at $9.99 per month and PrivadoVPN at $10.99. Treat both as dated editorial snapshots. Proton’s own pricing page confirms that one-month, one-year and two-year durations are offered, but the retrieved page information did not provide a stable one-month figure to replace the comparison amount.
Before subscribing, open the provider’s current checkout in your country and select the one-month duration. A changed promotion, local tax, currency conversion or app-store fee can make the final amount different from the September figure.
What can make the “cheapest” VPN cost more?
Currency conversion
A euro price and a dollar price cannot be ranked precisely without specifying an exchange-rate date and payment-card conversion method. Your bank may use its own rate or add a foreign-transaction fee, so compare the amount your payment method will actually settle.
Taxes and local charges
Checkout may add tax according to your billing address. Compare tax-inclusive totals where the provider displays them; otherwise note that the advertised figure is before any amount added at payment.
App-store and reseller pricing
Mullvad’s terms specifically warn that App Store and reseller prices can differ from direct purchases. App stores may also control the cancellation and refund workflow, which changes the practical cost of a short subscription.

The first term may be discounted while the next term renews at a different amount. A low first-month or first-year figure is not evidence that the same rate will continue.

What should I check before paying for one month?
- Is the charge explicitly for one month, rather than a monthly equivalent?
- What is the exact total in your local currency?
- Are taxes included or added on the payment screen?
- Which plan tier and features are included?
- Does the subscription renew automatically, and at what price?
- When must you cancel to avoid another charge?
- Does the refund window apply to your payment method?
- If you used an app store or reseller, must cancellation or refund be handled there?
Take a screenshot or save the receipt showing the term, total and renewal information. This gives you a record if the confirmation email uses a different label from the checkout page.

A prepaid long-term plan can have a lower total cost per month if you expect to use the VPN throughout the entire term and can afford the upfront payment. It is not cheaper for a reader who needs only one month: that reader is paying for unused future months and accepting renewal risk.
Use a simple break-even calculation: divide the full upfront charge by the number of months included, then compare that result with the one-month price. Keep the two figures labeled as “effective monthly cost” and “one-month charge.” They answer different budgeting questions.
What is the practical 2026 shortlist?
For the lowest clearly documented direct monthly price, start with Mullvad at €5 and verify the local checkout. For a dollar-denominated comparison, the dated editorial figures place Proton VPN at $9.99 and PrivadoVPN at $10.99, while NordVPN starts at $14.99 for Basic and rises to $19.99 or $29.99 for higher tiers.

Can I buy a VPN for exactly one month and avoid another charge?
