Neither ChatGPT nor Claude remembers your life as a person would. Each answer is generated from the active conversation and from additional information the product is allowed to supply: saved preferences, custom instructions, project files, or selectively retrieved past chats. That is why an assistant can mention an old preference without retaining every sentence you wrote, and why it can still miss a detail you know appeared in a previous conversation.
The useful way to think about “memory” is as three layers: context inside the current chat, persistent personalization, and retrieval of relevant material from elsewhere. The layers have different controls, scopes and deletion behavior in ChatGPT and Claude.
What does “remember” mean in ChatGPT and Claude?
“Remember” can describe several different mechanisms, not a permanent transcript stored in the assistant’s mind. The distinction matters when you are troubleshooting an unexpected answer or trying to keep information private.

Live conversation context
Both assistants can use earlier turns in the conversation that is currently open. This is ordinary context, not a separate profile. It is limited by the model and product’s context window, and older turns may be summarized, deprioritized or eventually fall outside the usable context as a chat grows.

Persistent personalization
Personalization is information kept separately from a particular chat so it can influence later conversations. ChatGPT offers saved memories, custom instructions and other personalization sources. Claude offers account-wide profile preferences and project instructions. These settings are user-controllable, but they are not interchangeable systems.
Retrieval from other material
A product may search past conversations, project knowledge, uploaded files or connected-app content and insert only relevant results into a new prompt. Retrieval is selective: it can surface an outdated preference, choose the wrong matching passage or fail to find a detail that exists in the source.
Project-scoped context
Projects create a boundary around instructions, conversations and documents. A project can provide continuity without making every conversation in the account available everywhere.
Does ChatGPT remember everything I tell it?
No. OpenAI states that memory does not retain every detail from every conversation. ChatGPT decides which available information is relevant to a response, and the result can change as the system updates what is useful to remember.
Which ChatGPT sources can influence an answer?
- Current chat: earlier messages in the open conversation.
- Saved memories: facts or preferences ChatGPT has stored for future use.
- Reference chat history: a retrieval setting that can use useful details from earlier chats; it is not verbatim transcript recall.
- Custom instructions: guidance you explicitly provide about how ChatGPT should respond. This is different from a memory inferred from conversations.
- Library files and connected apps: information that the account or workspace makes available, where those features are enabled.
A preference can therefore appear even when you never typed “remember this.” It may have been saved as a memory, supplied by custom instructions, or retrieved from an older chat or file.
Why might ChatGPT get an old detail wrong?
Past-chat retrieval is relevance-based rather than a guaranteed transcript search. A detail may be omitted, summarized inaccurately or superseded by a newer conversation. Treat an answer that cites an old preference as a useful lead, not as proof that ChatGPT has an exact historical record in its active context.
How do I see or stop ChatGPT memory?
Use ChatGPT’s Memory and Data Controls in your account. Labels and availability can vary by plan, region, platform and workspace, so confirm the controls shown in your own settings.

Turn off or manage personalization
- Open ChatGPT settings and go to the Memory or Personalization area.
- Review saved memories and remove individual entries you no longer want used.
- Check whether Reference chat history is enabled, and disable it if you do not want ChatGPT retrieving useful details from previous chats.
- Review Custom Instructions separately; turning off memory does not erase instructions you entered there.
- Audit Library files and connected apps, because a copy of the same information can remain available through those sources.
Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days, according to OpenAI’s documentation. The original chats remain until you delete them separately.
How do I delete a ChatGPT memory completely?
Deletion is layered. Remove the saved-memory entry, delete the chat where the information originated, and remove copies in uploaded files or connected apps. OpenAI says deletion and memory updates can take time to propagate; logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
What is the strongest non-persistent ChatGPT option?
Use Temporary Chat. Temporary chats do not create or update memories and do not appear in chat history while they are temporary. At startup, ChatGPT may let you choose whether the temporary chat can use existing memories and personalization. Choose the unpersonalized option when you do not want those sources supplied to the conversation. OpenAI may retain a copy of a temporary chat for up to 30 days for safety.
Does Claude remember previous conversations?
Claude retains context within one conversation. Continuity across separate chats comes from explicit project knowledge, profile or project instructions, or an optional past-chat search feature where that feature is available—not from an assumption that every old message is always loaded.
How Claude’s “Search and reference chats” works
Anthropic describes a feature that lets you prompt Claude to find and reference relevant previous conversations. When enabled, Claude searches matching conversations and assembles context for the new answer. This is retrieval, so the result is selective and can miss or misinterpret a passage.
Anthropic has described Search and reference chats as rolling out to Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with expansion to other plans. Availability can depend on account, region, platform and workspace; check your Settings rather than assuming the feature exists.
How do I turn off Claude’s past-chat search?
- In Claude, open Settings.
- Choose Profile, then open Preferences.
- Turn off Search and reference chats.
Anthropic says the current way to guarantee that a particular old chat is not included in conversation search is to delete that chat. Disabling the search control does not substitute for deleting a conversation you need removed.

What is the difference between ChatGPT memory, chat history and Claude project context?
The names sound similar, but scope and control are different. This table shows the practical boundary for each feature.

How do ChatGPT projects and Claude projects keep information scoped?
Use a project when you want continuity for a bounded task—such as a course, client, software repository or trip—without making every related message globally available.
ChatGPT project-only memory
In a project configured for project-only memory, saved memories are not referenced. Chats inside the project can reference other conversations in that same project, while chats outside the project cannot reference its conversations. This changes the retrieval boundary; it does not give ChatGPT human-like recall or guarantee that every project message is reproduced verbatim.
Claude project knowledge and instructions
Claude separates profile preferences, project instructions and project knowledge. Profile preferences apply across conversations. Project instructions apply only inside that project. Uploaded project knowledge is available across chats in the project.
Paid Claude projects can use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). When project knowledge approaches context limits, Claude automatically searches the uploaded documents for relevant material. Anthropic describes this as providing up to 10 times more project capacity, with activation automatic rather than a manual switch.

Yes, but only through the product’s available retrieval features and permissions. The search is relevance-based, not a promise that the assistant can browse a complete chronological archive.
ChatGPT
When Reference chat history and related personalization features are available and enabled, ChatGPT can use relevant information from previous chats. If it does not find the detail, restate it in the current conversation or place the authoritative version in a project or file that the product can access.

Claude
When Search and reference chats is available and enabled, ask Claude directly to find the earlier discussion and identify the relevant conversation. If a specific chat must never be searched, delete it; Anthropic identifies deletion as the current guarantee for excluding that chat from conversation search.
What happens when I delete a chat?
Deleting a visible conversation does not necessarily delete every other copy or derived setting.

- For ChatGPT Reference chat history, turning the setting off schedules remembered information from past chats for deletion within 30 days, but original conversations remain until separately deleted.
- For Claude, deleting a particular chat is the stated way to ensure it is not included in conversation search.
- Deletion and memory changes may take time to propagate. OpenAI states that logs of deleted saved memories may remain for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
These are vendor-documented lifecycle statements, not guarantees that every temporary cache or operational copy disappears instantly.
How can I prevent an assistant from using personal information?
Use the narrowest context that still supports your task, then verify the result.
- Choose a non-persistent mode. For ChatGPT, start an unpersonalized Temporary Chat when available.
- Disable cross-chat retrieval. Turn off ChatGPT Reference chat history or Claude Search and reference chats if you do not want old conversations supplied.
- Separate projects. Keep sensitive work in a project with explicit boundaries, and avoid uploading documents that do not belong there.
- Remove duplicate copies. Delete saved memories, source chats, uploaded files and connected-app copies as applicable.
- Minimize the prompt. Do not include identifiers, credentials or secrets merely to provide background.
- Check the answer. Ask which source or project material was used, and correct or remove stale information rather than assuming the assistant’s statement is authoritative.
Why does an assistant mention something I never asked it to remember?
The information may have come from a saved preference, custom or profile instruction, a project document, a connected app or a retrieved old chat. “I never said remember this” does not identify which source was used.
Ask the assistant what context it is using, then inspect the corresponding settings. In ChatGPT, check saved memories, Custom Instructions, Reference chat history, Library and connected apps. In Claude, check Profile preferences, project instructions, project knowledge and Search and reference chats. If the detail is wrong, update or delete the source instead of relying on a correction in one conversation.

How do I export my Claude conversations and account data?
On the Claude web app or Claude Desktop, open Settings > Privacy and use the export control. Anthropic states that the mobile apps cannot initiate an export, so use the web or desktop interface for this request. An export is useful for auditing what you have stored before deleting projects or chats, but it is not the same as making Claude use every exported message in future answers.

What should I do when the assistant “forgets” something important?
First determine which layer should contain the information, then place it there explicitly.
- For a fact needed only now, restate it in the active chat.
- For a repeated personal preference in ChatGPT, inspect or create a saved memory or Custom Instruction.
- For a stable Claude preference, use Profile preferences; for a task-specific rule, use project instructions.
- For a large reference set, upload it as project knowledge and keep the canonical version in one file.
- For an old discussion, ask the relevant product to search past chats if that feature is enabled, and provide dates or distinctive terms to improve retrieval.
Even with the right source, retrieval can fail. Keep critical decisions in a human-maintained document and quote the authoritative passage when an exact answer matters.
What are the practical privacy and accuracy trade-offs?

There is no single “memory on” switch that resolves all of these trade-offs. Review each source independently, especially on shared workspaces where administrators or plan rules can affect availability.

Imagine a response assembled from a desk, a filing cabinet and a search assistant. The desk is the current chat. The filing cabinet is saved preferences, instructions and project knowledge. The search assistant retrieves selected pages from older chats or files. Neither product promises that the filing cabinet contains every conversation or that the search assistant will find every matching sentence.
For privacy, remove information at every layer where a copy may exist. For accuracy, keep an authoritative project document and treat retrieved memories as editable context. Feature names, plans and rollout status change, so the controls visible in your account are the final authority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT or Claude remember a conversation after I close the app?
Closing the app does not by itself determine whether information is available later. A later answer depends on chat history, saved or profile preferences, project material and any enabled retrieval feature; a temporary or deleted chat follows different lifecycle rules.
Will correcting an AI’s memory update it everywhere?
Not necessarily. A correction in one chat may affect only that conversation unless you update the underlying saved memory, profile preference, project instruction or source file. Remove the outdated value from each applicable source.
Can my employer control AI memory settings?
Yes. Workspace plans can limit features, retention and export controls, and availability may differ from a personal account. Check the administrator’s policy and the settings shown in the workspace you are using.
Does exporting Claude data make future chats remember it?
No. Export creates a copy for you; it does not automatically add the exported conversations to Claude’s profile or project knowledge. Upload only the material you intentionally want available in a project.
