Yes. A managed OpenClaw instance can use the allowance attached to your ChatGPT account when its OpenAI provider is connected with ChatGPT/Codex OAuth. The supported terminal command is openclaw models auth login --provider openai; the equivalent Control UI path is Settings → Models → Connect provider, followed by Test & use.
Do not confuse that sign-in with an OpenAI API key. ChatGPT subscriptions and API usage have separate billing systems. OAuth usage is associated with the authorized ChatGPT account and its applicable plan allowance, while API-key requests are charged to the separately configured API organization. In a managed deployment, the operator also controls credential storage, logs, network policy and account-revocation procedures, so verify those details before connecting a work or personal account.
Can you use a ChatGPT subscription with Managed OpenClaw?
Yes, if the managed service supports OpenClaw’s OpenAI provider and allows browser-based OAuth. OpenClaw supports both ChatGPT/Codex OAuth (sometimes described as subscription authentication) and API-key authentication. Choose OAuth when you want requests to use the allowance of the ChatGPT account you authorize; choose an API key when your organization intentionally wants usage billed to an API account.

What is the difference between ChatGPT OAuth and an API key in OpenClaw?
The authentication method determines whose allowance is used, who receives the bill and who controls recovery when credentials expire.
| Factor | ChatGPT/Codex OAuth | OpenAI API key |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in | Browser authorization with the ChatGPT account that owns the plan | Paste or otherwise provide an API key created in an API organization |
| Billing owner | The authorized ChatGPT account and its applicable included allowance | The API organization, with API billing and a payment method configured separately |
| Subscription effect | Uses the account’s eligible ChatGPT/Codex allowance; limits depend on plan and conditions | A ChatGPT subscription does not pay for API requests |
| Credential custody | OAuth profile and refresh token are stored by OpenClaw and the managed operator’s environment | The API key is stored wherever the operator’s OpenClaw configuration keeps provider credentials |
| Recovery | May require browser reauthorization when a refresh token rotates or a client is signed out | Requires creating, rotating or revoking the key in the API organization |
| Best fit | Personal or team use where the authorized ChatGPT account should supply the allowance | Centralized, metered automation that your organization wants on API billing |
OpenAI explicitly describes ChatGPT and the API platform as separate billing systems. Signing in to a participating tool with ChatGPT can authorize use of an included allowance, but connecting the tool does not create a second allowance or convert a ChatGPT plan into API credit.
What must be true before you connect a managed instance?
Confirm the deployment and account conditions first. A managed operator can expose OpenClaw while imposing policies that are not defined by OpenClaw’s open-source authentication documentation.
- Provider support: Ask whether the service has enabled OpenClaw’s OpenAI provider and ChatGPT/Codex OAuth, rather than only API-key configuration.
- Browser callback access: The login flow opens a browser authorization page and returns a callback to the terminal or Control UI. Check whether your company network, browser isolation or remote desktop blocks that callback.
- Correct account: Sign in to the ChatGPT account whose plan and allowance you intend to use. A browser already signed in to another account can authorize the wrong identity.
- Workspace permission: The managed service may require an administrator to permit provider connections, model selection or external network egress.
- Data handling: Ask where prompts, tool output, authentication state and logs are retained, who can administer the instance, and how data is deleted.
- Exit plan: Confirm how to disconnect the OAuth profile and remove access if you leave the workspace or the managed service.
ChatGPT Plus is listed by OpenAI as a $20-per-month subscription in its current Help Center material, with higher limits and features such as advanced reasoning, faster responses, voice, image generation, file uploads and Deep Research where available. Those Plus features do not change the separate-billing rule for API requests, and availability can vary by account, model and region.
How do I connect ChatGPT OAuth from the OpenClaw terminal?
Use the OpenClaw provider-login command, complete the browser exchange, then select and test the resulting model.
- Open a shell in the managed environment. Use the terminal provided by the operator or the documented remote shell. Do not run the command on a different personal machine unless that machine is the OpenClaw client that will own the profile.
- Start the OpenAI OAuth flow. Run
openclaw models auth login --provider openai. - Authorize in the browser. Follow the sign-in page and approve access with the intended ChatGPT account. If several accounts are active in the browser, verify the email or account switcher before accepting.
- Wait for the callback. The browser reports an authorization callback, and OpenClaw displays a completion message. Return to the terminal after it says authorization was received or sign-in is complete.
- Select a model. Use OpenClaw’s model-selection controls or the managed service’s model picker. Availability is account- and service-dependent; do not assume every model shown in the ChatGPT web app is exposed in OpenClaw.
- Run a small test. Send a short, non-sensitive request. Check the OpenClaw status or usage view and record which provider profile and model answered.
If the browser completes but the terminal never receives the callback, leave the terminal process running while completing the authorization, then check whether the managed operator requires a specific browser, port-forward or callback URL. Do not copy an OAuth token file from another host as a workaround; OpenClaw’s local profile becomes the source of truth after it takes ownership.
How do I connect it in the OpenClaw Control UI?
The graphical flow performs the same OAuth exchange without requiring you to type the command.

- Sign in to the managed OpenClaw Control UI with the workspace account that is allowed to manage models.
- Open Settings → Models → Connect provider.
- Choose the OpenAI provider and select the ChatGPT/Codex sign-in option if the operator exposes both OAuth and API-key choices.
- Complete the browser authorization with the ChatGPT account that owns the intended plan.
- Return to the Control UI after the callback reports success.
- Choose Test & use to verify the connection and make the model available to the agent.
If Connect provider is missing, the operator may have disabled OAuth, restricted model administration to another role, or configured API keys only. Ask for the service’s supported authentication method instead of entering a ChatGPT password or token into an arbitrary settings field.
How can I verify that OpenClaw is using the subscription route?
A successful login alone does not prove which billing path a managed service is using. Verify the provider profile and the operator’s configuration.
- In the model or provider status view, confirm that the provider is
openaiand that the credential type is ChatGPT/Codex OAuth rather than API key. - Check the selected model and run a deliberately small, non-sensitive prompt.
- Ask the operator whether the instance has an API key configured as a fallback or higher-priority profile. A fallback can change the billing owner if OAuth is unavailable.
- Review the service’s usage or request log for the provider profile, model and timestamp. Treat that view as operational evidence, not as an OpenAI invoice.
- Check your ChatGPT account’s current allowance and model availability in the account interface. OpenAI does not publish one universal cap that applies to every plan and system condition.
Do not infer API billing from a usage counter inside OpenClaw. Only the operator’s provider configuration and the corresponding account or API-organization billing records establish where a request was charged.
What does the managed operator control?
Managed OpenClaw changes the trust boundary. OpenClaw documents how credentials are represented and stored, but it does not define a universal policy for every hosted service.

| Area | Questions to ask the operator |
|---|---|
| Credential database | Who can access the OpenClaw state database, and is it encrypted at rest? |
| Backups | Are OAuth profiles and refresh tokens included in backups, who can restore them, and how long are backups retained? |
| Logs | Are prompts, model responses, account identifiers or error details logged, and which administrators can read them? |
| Network egress | Which domains and regions can the instance contact, and are requests routed through a proxy? |
| Updates | Who applies OpenClaw and dependency updates, and how are authentication changes tested? |
| Workspace access | Can other members select your connected provider or inspect usage, and what role is required to change it? |
| Revocation | What happens to the profile when a member leaves, an account is suspended or the workspace is closed? |
These answers may differ between providers. Get them in writing if the account can access confidential conversations, source code, customer records or regulated data.
Where does OpenClaw store the OAuth profile?
OpenClaw uses the standard provider identifier openai for both OpenAI API-key authentication and ChatGPT/Codex OAuth. Its documented shared credential state is ~/.openclaw/state/openclaw.sqlite; agent-local state is stored at ~/.openclaw/agents/<agentId>/agent/openclaw-agent.sqlite.
In a managed service, those paths may live inside a container, virtual machine or persistent volume controlled by the operator. Ask whether the shared database is mounted into more than one worker, whether snapshots include it, and how access is removed. Never place the database in a public artifact, ticket attachment or unencrypted shared drive.

Older installations may contain profile identifiers beginning with openai-codex:. OpenClaw documents those identifiers as legacy state that can be repaired with openclaw doctor --fix. New configuration should use openai: profiles and auth.order.openai. Have the operator perform the repair in a maintenance window, because changing profile order can alter which credential is selected for subsequent requests.
Why might OAuth suddenly require sign-in again?
OAuth refresh tokens can rotate. OpenClaw warns that logging in through multiple clients can cause one client to be logged out; after OpenClaw owns a local OAuth profile, its locally stored refresh token is the source of truth.
Another client signed out the profile
If you authorize the same account from a second OpenClaw host, desktop client or managed workspace, the original profile may stop refreshing. Reauthenticate in the environment that should remain authoritative, and avoid alternating between copies.
The managed volume was restored
Restoring an old snapshot can bring back an expired or superseded refresh token. Ask the operator whether the credential database was rolled back, then complete a fresh login in the active environment.
The account or workspace changed
Password changes, account security events, workspace membership changes or administrator revocation can invalidate authorization. Confirm that the ChatGPT account is still active and that the managed workspace still permits the OpenAI provider.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do when the connection fails?
Use the symptom to isolate whether the problem is browser authorization, profile selection, model access or managed-service policy.
The command is unknown
Ask the operator which OpenClaw version and command surface the service supports. The documented entry point is openclaw models auth login --provider openai; a restricted managed shell may omit administrative commands even when the Control UI supports them.

The browser says success but OpenClaw stays disconnected
Keep the original terminal or UI session open through the callback. Check pop-up blocking, corporate browser isolation, callback port forwarding and outbound firewall rules. If the callback was delivered to another host, restart the login from the actual managed environment.
Only an API-key field is visible
The operator may have disabled OAuth or may not support subscription authentication. Ask whether ChatGPT/Codex OAuth can be enabled; do not paste a ChatGPT password, session cookie or refresh token into an API-key field.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Authentication and model entitlement are separate. Confirm that the model is available to the authorized account, enabled by the managed service and selected in the model picker. Limits and availability can change without an OpenClaw configuration change.
Requests work but appear on an API invoice
Stop sending sensitive or high-volume tasks and ask the operator to inspect provider priority and fallback settings. An API-key profile may be selected before OAuth, or OAuth failure may trigger an API fallback. The ChatGPT subscription does not reimburse those API requests.
Usage stops after several requests
There is no single published cap that applies to every plan and condition. Check the current ChatGPT account indicators, model picker and any service-level quota. A managed operator may also impose a workspace limit independent of OpenAI’s account allowance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I secure and revoke a managed connection?
Treat the OAuth profile as a live credential, not as a one-time setup artifact.
- Authorize only the ChatGPT account intended for this workspace; verify the account identity in the browser before approval.
- Use a separate workspace or account when personal and business data must not share an operator-controlled credential store.
- Ask who can read the OpenClaw state database and whether backups, replicas and support exports contain refresh tokens.
- Limit workspace roles that can connect providers, change authentication order or inspect logs.
- Document the reauthentication path before a token expires, including who can access the terminal or Control UI.
- When leaving the workspace, remove the provider profile through the service’s documented process and ask the operator to delete active volumes and backups according to its retention policy.
- If you suspect compromise, revoke the connection through the account or workspace security controls, notify the operator and reauthorize only after the old profile has been removed.
Do not copy token files between environments. Multiple clients can invalidate one another, and a copied token can leave an unknown host with continuing access.

Should a team use OAuth or an API key?
Choose based on billing ownership, governance and recovery rather than convenience alone.
| Situation | More suitable path | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| An individual wants OpenClaw to use their eligible ChatGPT allowance | ChatGPT/Codex OAuth | The authorized account supplies the allowance and account-level limits apply |
| A company needs centralized spend reporting and a service payment method | API key | Requests are attributed to the API organization’s billing and controls |
| A managed host must support several members with separate identities | OAuth profiles per authorized account, subject to operator policy | Each profile has its own account permissions and recovery path |
| A worker needs unattended automation with an explicit budget | API key, if approved by the organization | API credentials can be governed through the API organization, but require separate billing |
Some deployments configure both methods. In that case, ask which profile is first in auth.order.openai and whether fallback is enabled. Without that information, a successful response does not identify the billing route.
Does a ChatGPT Plus subscription guarantee unlimited OpenClaw use?
No. Plus is a subscription to the ChatGPT service, not an unlimited OpenClaw or API plan. OpenAI lists enhanced access and a $20-per-month price in its current Help Center article, but model limits vary by plan and system conditions. OpenClaw and the managed operator can add their own concurrency, workspace or retention restrictions.
Check the account’s current usage indicators and model picker immediately before an important job. If a task must run continuously or predictably, discuss an API organization and explicit budget with the operator instead of assuming subscription access will remain available.
What is the safest test after setup?
Start with a reversible, non-sensitive request that lets you verify identity, model selection and operational logging without exposing customer or proprietary data.
- Ask OpenClaw for a short response that does not contain personal, confidential or regulated information.
- Record the timestamp, selected model and provider profile shown by the Control UI or status command.
- Confirm with the operator whether the request appeared under an OAuth profile or an API-key profile.
- Check the ChatGPT account’s usage indication if the request used OAuth; do not treat OpenClaw’s local counter as an invoice.
- Remove the test conversation or log entry if the managed service’s retention policy allows it.
Only after this check should you submit production prompts, connect tools or allow agents to access workspace data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change from ChatGPT OAuth to an API key later?
Usually, yes, if the managed operator permits both credential types. Connect or add the API-key profile, then confirm the provider priority and test which profile is selected; changing credentials can alter billing immediately.
Will signing in on another computer cancel my Managed OpenClaw login?
It can. OpenClaw warns that OAuth refresh-token rotation and multiple clients may sign one client out. Keep one managed environment authoritative and reauthenticate there if another client invalidates the profile.
Where can I see my current ChatGPT or Codex limits?
Use the account’s current ChatGPT interface, model picker and usage indicators. OpenAI states that limits vary by plan and system conditions, so a static number in an older guide may not apply to your account.
Can the managed operator read my OAuth token?
The operator controls the environment that stores OpenClaw’s credential database, so access depends on its administration, backup and support policies. Ask specifically about database access, encryption, replicas, logs and deletion when your membership ends.
