ChatGPT Enterprise content is not used to train OpenAI models by default, but that does not mean every kind of data is kept for the same length of time or is inaccessible to an organization. Workspace chat retention depends on its policy and deletion behavior; files may follow separate rules; and Compliance Logs Platform data has its own 30-day retention period. The organization’s owner or administrator is the right person to confirm its actual settings, agreement, and access controls.
What do ChatGPT Enterprise privacy settings control?
There are three separate questions to resolve: whether workspace content is used for model training, how the organization manages access and retention for workspace data, and how long compliance records remain available through the Compliance Logs Platform. These controls affect different data and are not interchangeable.
OpenAI’s public documentation describes defaults and available controls, not the configuration or contract of a particular customer. A workspace’s actual arrangements may depend on its settings and applicable agreement. If you need a definitive answer for your organization, ask its workspace owner or administrator rather than assuming that a general product default describes your account.

Does ChatGPT Enterprise train on my data?
No, not by default: OpenAI states that content from ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces is not used to train its models by default. That is a default, not proof that every organization has the same custom arrangement.

OpenAI’s Data Controls documentation says: “By default, OpenAI does not use content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces to train its models.” The managed-account guidance also says an organization may be able to opt in to sharing data for model improvement, subject to its configuration and applicable law.
Training and retention answer different questions. A decision not to use content for training does not tell you how long a chat is retained, whether an organization has access to it, or whether a compliance export contains relevant records. Check the organization’s actual configuration and agreement for the training arrangement, then separately verify its retention and access policies.
What to verify with your organization
- Whether the organization uses the default training arrangement or has opted in to data sharing for model improvement.
- Which workspace retention rules and controls are enabled.
- Which organizational roles can access, export, or audit workspace data, and under what conditions.
- Which agreement applies to your workspace and whether it changes the general defaults described in public documentation.
How long does ChatGPT Enterprise retain data?
There is no single duration that applies to every kind of Enterprise data. Saved chats, separately saved Library files, transient files, and Compliance Logs Platform records can have different retention behavior.

The 30-day scheduled permanent deletion period for a deleted saved chat and the 30-day Compliance Logs Platform retention period are two different policies. Neither number should be treated as a universal retention promise for every workspace object or record.

What happens when I delete or archive a chat?
Archiving leaves a chat saved and does not change its retention. Deleting a saved chat removes it from your account view immediately, after which OpenAI schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to documented exceptions.
Delete a saved chat
- Find the chat you want to remove in your ChatGPT workspace.
- Use the chat’s delete action. The exact interface label and location can change, so follow the controls displayed in your current workspace.
- Expect the chat to disappear from the account view immediately. Do not interpret the later scheduled deletion window as a guaranteed restore period.
- If the chat involved an uploaded file, check whether that file is separately saved in Library; deleting the chat does not delete a Library file that remains saved there.
OpenAI says permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days unless the information was already de-identified and disassociated or a security or legal obligation requires longer retention. The public documentation does not make those exceptions equivalent to ordinary workspace retention settings.
What archiving changes—and what it does not
Archiving organizes a chat without deleting it. Archived chats remain saved until the user deletes them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them. Use deletion, not archiving, when your intent is to request removal of a saved chat.
Are files covered by the same retention rules as chats?
No. A file can be retained separately from the conversation in which it was used, and some transient files can follow an expiry rule that differs from the workspace’s chat-retention policy.

In particular, deleting a chat does not delete a file that remains saved in Library. Some files that are not saved to Library can expire separately from chat-retention settings; for Enterprise, some transient files can expire after 48 hours unless another retention period applies. That 48-hour figure applies only to the described category of transient files, not every upload or every Enterprise file.
When a conversation and an associated document need different treatment, check both locations and ask the workspace administrator which file controls apply. Removing one object should not be assumed to remove a separately stored copy.
Can my administrator read my ChatGPT Enterprise chats?
Organizational access is possible, but the public guidance does not establish that every administrator can automatically read every chat. An organization may be able to access, export, audit, retain, or delete data depending on its configuration and applicable law.

Compliance permissions are also distinct from a general administrator role. OpenAI’s managed-account guidance says only a workspace owner can create credentials with sensitive compliance permissions. Simply having an administrator role does not grant those permissions. If your work involves compliance exports or integrations, confirm both the role and the specific credential permissions with the workspace owner.

The Compliance Logs Platform retains data for 30 days. If your organization needs a longer record history, it must continuously download the logs and retain them under its own policies; the platform’s 30-day period should not be treated as a long-term archive.
- Identify the compliance, security, or IT team that owns the organization’s records-retention requirements.
- Have the workspace owner establish the credentials needed for compliance access. Sensitive compliance permissions cannot be created by an administrator solely because of that administrator role.
- Set up a recurring process to download all required logs before they age out of the platform’s 30-day window.
- Store and govern the downloaded records under the organization’s applicable retention, access, and deletion policies.
- Check current official documentation for the supported log system, endpoints, and integration coverage before relying on a connector to meet a compliance requirement.
OpenAI describes compliance data connections to eDiscovery, data loss prevention (DLP), and security information and event management (SIEM) tools. It identifies Concentric AI, CrowdStrike, and Cyberhaven as supporting updated conversation message logs. Integration support can change, and the fact that a provider supports updated conversation message logs does not establish that every endpoint or every required record is covered. Validate the precise coverage against your organization’s requirement.

OpenAI released the new conversation logs system on March 5, 2026, and removed the old stateful route on June 5, 2026. These are API migration dates, not retention periods. Organizations maintaining an integration should use current documentation to confirm that their implementation follows the supported route and that its exports include the records they need.

How should an organization decide which controls to check?
Start with the data type and the outcome you need, then identify the owner of the relevant control. A deletion request for a saved chat, an expiry rule for a transient file, and a long-term compliance archive are different operational tasks.
- For training questions: confirm whether the organization follows the default or has an opt-in arrangement for model improvement.
- For chat lifetime: ask which workspace retention policy applies and how user deletion interacts with it.
- For file cleanup: determine whether a file is saved in Library or subject to a transient-file expiry rule.
- For organizational access: ask which roles can access, export, or audit data and which compliance permissions are enabled.
- For long-term evidence: establish continuous compliance-log downloads and an organization-managed retention process.
For employees, the practical route is to ask the workspace owner or administrator for the current policy rather than infer access or retention from the product name. For owners and compliance teams, document the configuration, validate integration coverage, and make sure the records needed beyond the platform’s stated window are actually being exported.

Can I recover a ChatGPT Enterprise chat after deleting it?

Does a deleted chat automatically remove its uploaded document?
