ChatGPT can carry out daily recurring tasks for you now through Scheduled Tasks: it can run one-time or recurring prompts while you are offline and notify you by push notification or email. Scheduled Tasks work well for briefings, reminders, learning practice, summaries, and monitoring, but permissions, limits, approvals, and availability vary by account.

OpenAI’s current interface is moving toward a dedicated Scheduled page, although some accounts still expose task management through Settings → Notifications → Manage tasks. You can also create a task simply by describing the schedule and result you want in a normal ChatGPT conversation.

Key takeaways

  • Scheduled Tasks can run one-time or recurring prompts, including daily, weekly, monthly, and broader morning, afternoon, or evening schedules.
  • Tasks can run while you are offline and can notify you by push notification or email, but notifications require the relevant device, browser, desktop, or email permissions.
  • Tasks cannot run more than once per hour, and the latest documented active-task limits range from 3 on Go to 15 on Pro and Enterprise as of August 18, 2026.
  • A scheduled prompt is not the same as unrestricted autonomous action: connected-app access, permissions, approvals, workspace policies, and available tools determine whether ChatGPT can read or change external information.
  • Scheduled Tasks created in a Project cannot access that Project’s files, so recurring work should not depend on ChatGPT automatically rereading Project documents.

What are ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks?

ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks are saved instructions that ChatGPT executes later at a specified time or on a recurring schedule. A task can generate a response, check for a meaningful change, or remind you about something and then notify you when the task finishes.

OpenAI describes Scheduled Tasks as suitable for reminders, recurring work, daily briefings, and monitoring in its current Scheduled Tasks documentation. A task can run once—for example, “Remind me tomorrow at 9 AM”—or repeat on a schedule such as every weekday at 8 AM.

The practical distinction is important: a scheduled response is not automatically an unrestricted software robot. A daily news briefing mainly requires ChatGPT to gather and summarize information. Sending an email, changing a record, purchasing an item, deleting data, or publishing content requires a supported connected app, appropriate permissions, and sometimes a user approval.

What can ChatGPT do automatically every day?

ChatGPT can handle recurring information, reminder, learning, and monitoring tasks when the required information and tools are available. The following examples show what each category can and cannot reliably mean.

Task type Example Main limitation
Reminder “Remind me tomorrow at 9 AM to call the dentist.” Push, browser, desktop, or email permissions must allow the notification.
Daily briefing “Summarize the most important AI news every weekday morning.” Source quality, date filtering, and factual accuracy still need review.
Learning practice “Give me a 10-minute French exercise every day.” Progression and conversation continuity may require explicit instructions and occasional correction.
Monitoring “Tell me when a company publishes a major policy or price change.” Monitoring is not guaranteed real-time alerting; tasks cannot run more than once per hour.
Connected-app workflow “Summarize new messages from my connected email.” App availability, permissions, administrator controls, and possible approvals determine what ChatGPT can access.
Recurring deliverable “Create a weekly project report from connected sources.” Longer, multi-step documents and workflows may be better suited to ChatGPT Work.

Monitoring deserves particular caution. A task may check periodically and decide whether a change is meaningful, but “meaningful” can produce false positives or missed items. A scheduled check should not replace a service that promises immediate alerts for safety, security, financial, operational, or compliance events.

Who can use ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks?

OpenAI’s newest documentation lists Scheduled Tasks as available globally to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users on the web, mobile, and desktop apps, although availability and limits can vary by account, workspace, platform, and rollout status. OpenAI’s separate Tasks documentation contains older platform and management details, so interface labels may not match across accounts.

Look for Scheduled in the sidebar first. If that page is absent, check Settings → Notifications → Manage tasks. A business or enterprise administrator can also restrict connected apps or actions even when the account itself is eligible.

Do not interpret plan eligibility as a guarantee that every model, tool, app, or task type is available. OpenAI’s current wording says Tasks are supported by ChatGPT models except Pro models, but “Pro” can refer either to a subscription plan or a model family. The same documentation lists Pro users as eligible, so “Pro subscribers cannot use Tasks” would be too broad.

How do you create a daily recurring task?

The quickest method is to ask ChatGPT directly. A good task request contains the recurrence, exact time zone, desired output, quality rules, and notification condition.

Method 1: Create a task in chat

Send a direct instruction such as:

Every weekday at 8:00 AM Eastern Time, give me a five-minute briefing of the most important AI developments published in the previous 24 hours. Include no more than five items, the publication date, source name, and a link for each item. Separate confirmed developments from speculation. If there are no major developments, say so instead of padding the briefing. Notify me after every run.

Other useful examples include:

Every day at 7:30 AM in my local time zone, give me a 10-minute French practice exercise for an intermediate learner. Include five vocabulary words, one grammar question, and an answer key. Keep the exercise concise and state when context from earlier sessions is unavailable.
Every weekday at 4:00 PM Eastern Time, summarize the action items from this week's available conversations. Organize them by priority, identify missing owners or deadlines, and say “not found” when the information is unavailable.

After you submit the request, ChatGPT should show a confirmation or task card. Check the displayed schedule, time zone, recurrence, and next run before assuming that the task was saved. OpenAI documents conversational task creation in its Scheduled Tasks help article.

Method 2: Use the Scheduled page

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web, mobile app, or desktop app.
  2. Open Scheduled from the sidebar if the page appears.
  3. Select New task or the equivalent task-creation control.
  4. Enter the instruction.
  5. Choose the time, recurrence, and notification preferences.
  6. Save the task.
  7. Confirm that the task appears in the task list and check its next scheduled run.

OpenAI is changing the interface, so the exact button label may differ. If the Scheduled page is not visible, use the chat method or check Settings → Notifications → Manage tasks.

How should you write a reliable recurring prompt?

A recurring prompt should define what “useful,” “recent,” “important,” or “meaningful” means instead of relying on vague instructions. The following template works for briefings, reminders, monitoring, study practice, and reports:

Task: [short name]

Schedule: [days] at [time] in [time zone]

Goal:
[What the task should accomplish]

Inputs:
[Information, websites, or connected apps it may use]

Rules:
- [Include and exclude criteria]
- [Source and date requirements]
- [Maximum length or number of items]
- [Tone and format]
- Do not guess; say “not found” when evidence is insufficient.

Output:
1. [First section]
2. [Second section]
3. [Third section]

Notification rule:
[Notify every run / notify only when a qualifying change exists]

Use an absolute time and name the time zone. Define the date range for research tasks, require source links and publication dates for briefings, set a maximum number of results, and specify what should happen when nothing qualifies. Ask the task not to repeat previously reported items when the task can reliably access the necessary history, but do not assume perfect continuity across every run.

Start with a narrow, low-risk task and run it manually once before making it recurring. A prompt that produces a useful answer on demand is easier to debug than a vague prompt that runs every morning.

How do you create a useful monitoring task?

A monitoring task should define the exact change that matters and should notify you only when the change meets that definition. For example:

Check once each weekday for meaningful changes to [company, product, or topic]. Notify me only if there is a new official announcement, price change, release, policy change, or major outage. Include what changed, when it changed, and the primary source. If no qualifying change occurred, do not send a substantive alert.

A monitoring task is a periodic judgment, not a guaranteed real-time feed. According to OpenAI’s current documentation, Scheduled Tasks cannot run more than once per hour. Use a dedicated alerting or automation system when timing, retries, event triggers, audit logs, or delivery guarantees are essential.

How do you manage, pause, resume, or delete a task?

Open the task list through Scheduled or through Settings → Notifications → Manage tasks, depending on the interface shown by your account. From the task card or its three-dot menu, you can generally:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • View all active and paused tasks.
  • Check the next scheduled run.
  • Open earlier task responses.
  • Edit the task name, instructions, schedule, or notification settings.
  • Pause a task temporarily.
  • Resume a paused task.
  • Delete a task permanently.

Deleting a task does not delete the associated chat. Deleting the chat associated with a scheduled task automatically pauses the task, according to OpenAI’s current task-management guidance. Review inactive tasks periodically so old monitoring prompts do not continue consuming an active-task slot or exposing connected information.

What happens when ChatGPT is offline?

Scheduled Tasks can run when you are not currently online, and ChatGPT can notify you after completion through push notification or email. Offline execution does not mean guaranteed delivery, perfect execution, or access to every conversation, file, app, or website.

Mobile operating-system permissions, browser permissions, desktop notification settings, and ChatGPT email preferences can all affect delivery. A task may have completed even when no notification appeared, so check the task list and previous responses when troubleshooting.

What are the limits of ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks?

Scheduled Tasks are useful but bounded. The latest figures and restrictions documented by OpenAI should be treated as account-dependent because the feature and plan structure are changing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan Latest documented active-task limit Qualification
Go Up to 3 active tasks Verify availability and the limit shown in the account.
Plus Up to 5 active tasks OpenAI lists Plus as eligible; limits may change.
Business and Edu Up to 10 active tasks Workspace administrators may restrict apps and actions.
Pro and Enterprise Up to 15 active tasks OpenAI’s wording about Pro models is separate from Pro plan eligibility.

These are the latest documented limits as of August 18, 2026, not a promise that every account will display the same number. OpenAI’s newer help page contains tiered limits, while older Tasks documentation includes an inconsistent blanket limit of 10 active tasks. Check the limit presented in your account before designing a large recurring workflow.

Tasks cannot run more than once per hour. Broader scheduling windows such as morning, afternoon, or evening are supported in the newer Scheduled experience. Monitoring tasks may stop when an end condition is met, and unattended tasks may automatically pause after a period of inactivity.

Older OpenAI documentation lists voice chats, file uploads, and GPTs as unsupported for Tasks. The newer documentation has changed the feature description and does not reproduce the full older list in the same way, so confirm those restrictions in the task-creation interface before depending on a voice-, file-, or GPT-based workflow.

Can Scheduled Tasks use Project files?

No. OpenAI’s current Scheduled Tasks documentation says that a task created in a Project cannot access the files in that Project. A user therefore cannot assume that a daily task will automatically reread the documents stored in a Project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a recurring report, make the required inputs explicit and use a supported connected app or a workflow designed to provide the necessary context. A task should clearly label missing data instead of silently presenting an incomplete report as comprehensive.

Can ChatGPT take actions in other apps?

Sometimes. A Scheduled Task may use a supported connected app, such as Gmail when the app is available and connected for the account or workspace. The app’s permissions, OpenAI’s available tools, business or enterprise administrator settings, and required approvals determine what ChatGPT can do.

Capability level What it means Example
Read information ChatGPT retrieves information from a connected source and summarizes it. Summarize new messages in a connected mailbox.
Prepare an action ChatGPT creates a draft or recommendation for review. Draft a reply or prepare a weekly report.
Execute an action ChatGPT changes an external system or sends something. Send an email, modify a record, purchase an item, or publish content.

A generated draft is not a sent message, and a recommendation is not a completed transaction. High-impact actions may require approval or user control. Do not create a recurring task that can send, delete, purchase, or publish without a human checkpoint unless the consequences are understood and the integration explicitly supports the required safeguards. OpenAI describes connected apps, permissions, and restrictions in its official Scheduled Tasks guidance.

When should you use Scheduled Tasks, ChatGPT Work, or another automation tool?

Use Scheduled Tasks for predictable, periodic prompts where a notification and occasional human review are sufficient. Use ChatGPT Work for longer, multi-step work that produces a finished document, spreadsheet, presentation, report, or site, or that needs a more involved workflow and review process. OpenAI explains the distinction between ChatGPT Work and Codex in its product documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Need Best starting point Reason
Daily reminder, briefing, practice, or prompt Scheduled Tasks The work is periodic and the output can come from the prompt, available web information, or supported apps.
Multi-step report or finished deliverable ChatGPT Work The workflow needs more context, several stages, or a reviewable document.
Software-development workflow Codex Codex is intended primarily for software-development workflows and is separate from ordinary ChatGPT chat.
Event-triggered, deterministic, auditable automation Dedicated automation service Use a purpose-built system when retries, compliance logs, strict timing, broad integrations, or guaranteed triggers matter.

A dedicated automation service is generally the safer choice when the trigger must be an event rather than a time, the action must be deterministic, the workflow must retry after errors, or the system must modify external data without a human checkpoint. This recommendation follows from Scheduled Tasks’ hourly minimum, possible inactivity pauses, account-dependent integrations, permissions, and approvals.

Which ChatGPT plan do you need?

For a few personal daily reminders, briefings, or learning tasks, start with the lowest plan that exposes Scheduled Tasks in your account; an upgrade is not automatically necessary. Plus is positioned for individual recurring use, while Business and Enterprise become more relevant when teams need administration, connected-app governance, shared workflows, or organizational controls.

OpenAI lists Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise as eligible tiers in its newest documentation, with the latest documented active-task allowances shown above. OpenAI’s official ChatGPT plan comparison is the appropriate place to check current pricing and availability because subscription prices and feature limits can change. Business workspaces may also use recurring workspace-agent workflows for reports and operational processes, subject to administrator controls; see OpenAI’s workspace agents information.

Why might a task fail or stop running?

Most failures have a small number of practical causes. Work through this checklist in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The task never appears: Look for Scheduled in the sidebar, then check Settings → Notifications → Manage tasks. If neither is available, ask ChatGPT directly to create the task and confirm that a task card or saved confirmation appears.
  2. The schedule is wrong: Open the task and verify the displayed time zone, recurrence, and next-run time. Rewrite the prompt with an absolute time zone rather than “tomorrow morning.”
  3. Notifications do not arrive: Check ChatGPT notification preferences, mobile operating-system permissions, browser permissions, desktop notification settings, and email notification settings. OpenAI notes that additional device or browser permissions may be required in its Tasks notification guidance.
  4. The task is paused: Review the task card for the reason. Inactivity, deletion of the associated chat, or a need for additional user action can pause a task. Resume or edit the task after resolving the cause.
  5. The response is vague or repetitive: Add a fixed format, maximum item count, date range, inclusion and exclusion rules, a definition of significance, a source requirement, and a “no qualifying result” response.
  6. The task cannot use files: Do not place the task in a Project expecting it to read Project files. Supply information through a supported app or use a workflow with explicitly available context.
  7. The task attempts an external action: Confirm that the app is connected, the required permission exists, the workspace administrator allows the action, and the task has not stopped at an approval step.
  8. The briefing is inaccurate: Require primary sources, publication dates, links, a defined date window, and a clear separation between confirmed facts and speculation. Review important results manually.

How can you use Scheduled Tasks safely?

Connect only the apps required for the task and review the permissions before enabling an integration. Email, files, account settings, and other connected data can contain sensitive information, and agent-like workflows can face privacy and security risks such as prompt injection.

  • Do not give a recurring task broader access than its purpose requires.
  • Avoid placing passwords, secrets, or highly sensitive information in prompts unless the workflow explicitly requires it and the implications are understood.
  • Require approval for sending, deleting, purchasing, publishing, or changing important records.
  • Inspect the first several task results before trusting the recurring output.
  • Pause or delete tasks that are no longer needed.
  • Do not use a scheduled briefing as the sole control for safety-critical, financial, legal, security, or compliance decisions.

OpenAI discusses confirmations, supervision, prompt-injection monitoring, and other safeguards for agent-like workflows in its ChatGPT agent safety documentation. The safest rollout is to begin with a low-risk information or learning task, test it for several days, and add connected apps or external actions only after the output is dependable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ChatGPT run daily tasks while I am offline?

Yes. ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks can execute recurring prompts while you are not currently online and can send a push notification or email after completion. Notification permissions and account availability still affect whether you receive the alert.

Can ChatGPT automatically send emails from a scheduled task?

Possibly, but ChatGPT cannot be assumed to send emails automatically. A supported connected email app, the necessary permissions, workspace policies, and any required approval determine whether ChatGPT can read, draft, or send email.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a Scheduled Task read files in my ChatGPT Project?

No. OpenAI’s current Scheduled Tasks documentation says tasks created in a Project cannot access that Project’s files. Use explicitly available connected sources or a workflow that provides the required context.

How often can ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks run?

Scheduled Tasks cannot run more than once per hour. Daily, weekly, monthly, and broader morning, afternoon, or evening schedules are supported in the newer experience, but monitoring is not guaranteed real-time alerting.

The Bottom Line

ChatGPT can carry out daily recurring tasks for you now, but the dependable use case is scheduled prompts, briefings, reminders, learning practice, and carefully defined monitoring—not unrestricted “do anything while I sleep” automation. Create one narrow task, confirm its next run, inspect the first results, and add connected apps or external actions only when permissions, approvals, and risks are clear.
