Some ChatGPT users may now see ads, but eligibility is limited and still rolling out. OpenAI says the test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adults on Free and Go, and is expanding gradually to eligible Free and Go accounts in selected regions. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts are listed as ad-free, while accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 and Temporary Chats are excluded. Availability can change, so the information shown in your account and OpenAI’s current Help Center FAQ is the final authority.
When an ad is eligible to appear, OpenAI says it is placed separately from the answer, clearly labeled, and selected by a dedicated advertising system. OpenAI’s stated design is that advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT responses. The company also says advertisers receive aggregate performance information rather than chat histories or personal details, and that users can adjust personalization, dismiss or report ads, clear ad data, or choose an ad-free option where available.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
Ads are currently limited to some logged-in adults using Free or Go accounts in regions included in OpenAI’s gradual rollout. Seeing no ad does not necessarily mean your account is permanently excluded: delivery depends on region, account eligibility, and whether there is a relevant advertising opportunity in a particular conversation.

This is a product test, not a promise that every Free or Go conversation will contain an advertisement. OpenAI’s February 9, 2026 announcement describes the initial United States test, while the current consumer FAQ describes a broader but still selective regional rollout. Check the in-product notice or the latest Ads in ChatGPT page for your account’s current status.

Where do ads appear, and what do they look like?
OpenAI says the standard placement is below a ChatGPT response, with a clear label and visual separation from the answer. The ad is not inserted into the model’s prose, and it should be distinguishable from citations, suggested follow-up prompts, or other chat controls.
Ads below a response
A relevant opportunity is required before an ad is shown, so the same prompt can produce an answer with no ad in one conversation and an ad in another. Placement below the response is intended to keep the commercial unit outside the answer itself.
Multi-image ads during image generation
OpenAI is also testing a visual format in which several ad images can appear while an image is being generated. The company says those units remain separate from the image ChatGPT creates; they are not part of the generated artwork. This format is described in OpenAI’s October 5, 2026 announcement, Building advertising for the way people use AI, and may not be available to every eligible user.

Do ads influence the answers ChatGPT gives me?
OpenAI’s answer is no. Its Help Center states, “No. Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers,” and says advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter responses. That is OpenAI’s product and policy claim; the public material cited here is not an independent audit of the systems.
How OpenAI says the separation works
In an October 21, 2026 engineering article, OpenAI technical staff describe ad selection as a separate service that runs alongside normal response generation. They say the ad path uses separate models, services, and code, while the chat model follows its normal generation process. If the ad-serving system is slow or unavailable, OpenAI says the organic response continues rather than waiting for an ad.

This architecture is designed to prevent an advertiser from buying a higher-ranked answer, changing wording, or inserting a recommendation into the model’s response. It does not mean every answer is correct or unbiased for other reasons; it means OpenAI says the advertising system is not an input that controls the answer.
How does ChatGPT decide which ad to show?
OpenAI says matching aims for relevance and expected outcomes, using the conversation’s context and intent, information about the ad and its landing page, advertiser-provided context hints and targeting selections, and—when ad personalization is enabled—selected signals from your broader ChatGPT experience.
Conversation context and evolving intent
The current conversation can provide the strongest immediate signal. OpenAI’s engineering explanation says intent may develop over several turns, so the ad system maintains a stateful session and updates its understanding as the discussion changes. Retrieval, ranking, relevance evaluation, and final selection are described as operations inside the advertising system rather than inside answer generation.
Ad and advertiser information
The system can evaluate an ad’s title, copy, destination page, and the advertiser’s context hints or targeting selections. OpenAI’s advertiser guide explains that context hints guide matching; they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will be delivered in a particular conversation.
Personalization on or off
With ad personalization enabled, OpenAI says selected signals from your broader ChatGPT experience may be used in addition to the current conversation. Turning personalization off narrows the signals used for ad selection, but it does not necessarily remove all ads from an eligible account because contextual matching can still use the conversation and the ad itself.

What information do advertisers receive?
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive your chat content, chat history, memories, name, email address, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information. For the current test, reporting is described as aggregate information such as views and clicks rather than a transcript or an identity profile delivered to the advertiser.

OpenAI’s description concerns its own handling of the ad test. It does not establish what an advertiser may collect after you leave ChatGPT and visit an external landing page, so review that site’s privacy notice before submitting information there.
What controls can I use to manage ChatGPT ads?
Eligible users can manage how ads are personalized and how individual ads are handled from the controls OpenAI makes available in the product.
- Turn off ad personalization. Use the advertising or data-control setting shown in ChatGPT to disable personalization. OpenAI says contextual information from the current conversation can still be relevant when an ad is selected.
- Ask why an ad appeared. The ad controls can provide an explanation of the signals or context OpenAI used for that placement.
- Dismiss an ad. Hiding an ad removes it from your immediate view and provides feedback to the ad experience.
- Report an ad. Use the report control if an ad is misleading, inappropriate, or otherwise violates the service’s rules.
- Clear advertising data. OpenAI says the setting can clear data used for ads. Deleted ad data may be retained for up to 30 days before removal, according to the Help Center FAQ.
These controls affect advertising, not the underlying quality or safety behavior of ChatGPT’s answers. Settings labels and locations can change during the test, so follow the current in-product wording rather than an older screenshot or tutorial.

Choose an ad-free paid plan
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu are listed by OpenAI as plans that will not have ads. The sources supplied for this FAQ do not establish prices, billing terms, or whether every country can subscribe to each plan, so check the plan picker in your account before making a decision.
Select a limited free no-ads option
OpenAI also says some users can choose a free no-ads experience with additional limits. Availability may vary by region and over time, and the limits can make that option less capable than the standard free experience. If the choice appears in your account, read the on-screen description of message, model, or feature limits before confirming it.
Are ads excluded from sensitive conversations?
OpenAI says ads are not eligible near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health, or politics, and that political advertising is currently disallowed. The company also says some advertisers in regulated categories, including health and financial services, may qualify under eligibility rules, while ads remain excluded from sensitive user content.
This distinction matters: a regulated advertiser may be allowed to participate in the program, but that does not make an ad eligible to appear beside a conversation that OpenAI classifies as sensitive. OpenAI does not publish a complete list of every topic classification in the FAQ, so users should not treat the examples as an exhaustive boundary.
What happens as the ad test expands?
The rollout is intentionally gradual. The initial United States test began on February 9, 2026, and OpenAI’s later help documentation describes availability expanding to eligible Free and Go users in selected regions. Formats, controls, eligible plans, and geographic coverage can therefore change without changing the basic separation OpenAI describes between ads and answers.

For a current account-level answer, look for an in-product ad notice and consult the dated Help Center page rather than relying on a post that describes the February launch. A missing ad, a newly visible ad, or a changed setting can all reflect rollout status rather than a technical fault.
How should I interpret an ad next to an answer?
Treat the response and the advertisement as two different things. The answer is generated by ChatGPT’s normal system; the labeled unit below it is selected by the advertising service. Do not assume that an ad’s presence is an endorsement by the model, and do not treat a commercial claim as verified merely because it appears in the same interface.
- Read the label and open the advertiser’s landing page only if you want to investigate the offer.
- For health, financial, legal, or other high-stakes decisions, verify claims with an appropriate independent source.
- Use “Why this ad?” or report controls when the placement seems irrelevant or inappropriate.
- Remember that disabling personalization changes ad matching signals, not the factual reliability of a ChatGPT answer.
What OpenAI’s claims do—and do not—establish
The published FAQ and engineering article explain OpenAI’s intended safeguards, data boundaries, and system design. They are authoritative descriptions of OpenAI’s product policy, but they are not an independent audit of ad delivery, model behavior, or data processing. Because the program is still changing, check the current Help Center entry linked above for any new eligibility, retention, or control details before relying on an older explanation.

How long does OpenAI keep advertising data after I clear it?
OpenAI’s Help Center says deleted data used for ads may be retained for up to 30 days before removal. That retention statement applies to the advertising data control described in the FAQ, not to a promise that every other type of account data follows the same schedule.
Do hiding, viewing, or clicking an ad become ChatGPT memories?
OpenAI says actions such as hiding, reporting, viewing, or clicking ads are not added to ChatGPT memory. They remain advertising interactions rather than facts the model stores as a memory about you.
What happens if I use “Ask ChatGPT” to share an ad?
The ad can become part of a conversation when you explicitly use that feature. OpenAI says that conversation may be referenced in future chats if your reference-chat-history setting is enabled, so review that setting if you do not want the discussion carried forward.
Can an advertiser’s context hint guarantee that its ad appears for my prompt?
No. OpenAI’s advertiser guidance describes context hints as signals that guide matching, not exact-match keywords. They do not guarantee delivery in a particular conversation.
