To control ad personalization in ChatGPT, open Settings > Ad Controls if that option is available on your account. Turning personalization off can make ads less tailored, but it does not necessarily remove them: OpenAI says the current conversation may still be used to select ads. Model training, memory, chat deletion, and ads data have separate controls, so changing one setting does not automatically change the others.
Which controls you see depends on your plan, region, account, and—if you use a managed workspace—your organization’s policies. This guide explains what each control does and how to choose the one that matches your privacy goal.
What does ChatGPT’s ad personalization setting control?
Ad personalization affects the signals used to choose ads, not whether your account is eligible to see ads. When personalization is enabled, OpenAI says selected signals from broader ChatGPT use—including past chats and memory—may inform ad selection, depending on the settings available to you. If you turn it off, ads may be less tailored, but the current conversation can still be considered.

The setting is not a switch for model training, memory, chat history, or deletion.
#1 Best Overall
Think of the control as changing the inputs to an ad-selection system. With personalization on, the system may use permitted signals from your broader use of ChatGPT, such as previous conversations, saved memories, or interactions with ads. With personalization off, those broader signals are reduced, but the topic of the conversation you are currently having may still provide context. Turning the switch off therefore changes relevance, not the existence of an advertising surface.
It also does not rewrite the past. Existing conversations, saved memories, and previously collected ads data are not automatically erased when you disable personalization. If your goal is removal, use the separate deletion or memory controls described below.
How do I turn ad personalization off?
If your account has the control, use ChatGPT’s Ad Controls settings. The exact menu may not appear for every account, so first confirm that you are using an eligible account in a region where ads are available or expected soon.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Ad Controls.
- Find the personalization control and turn it off.
- Review any additional options shown on that page. Available choices can differ by account and region.
- Close and reopen the settings page to confirm that the choice remains saved. If you use ChatGPT on more than one device, check the same account there as well.
Turning off personalization changes the signals used to tailor ad selection. It does not promise that ads will disappear, and it does not by itself delete past chats or ads data. If you cannot find Ad Controls, that can reflect eligibility or rollout rather than a setting you have overlooked.
Do not assume that a browser privacy extension, clearing cookies, or signing out changes this account-level setting. Those actions may affect local browsing data, but the relevant ChatGPT control is the one shown in your account settings. Likewise, changing a setting in one personal account does not change another account or a managed workspace account.
Does turning off personalization remove ads?
No. OpenAI distinguishes less-personalized advertising from an ad-free experience. Ads may still appear, and the current conversation may still inform ad selection when personalization is off. Whether an ad-free alternative is available depends on plan and region.
OpenAI’s current Help Center description says ads may appear for Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads. These are rollout details, not a guarantee that every user in a plan or location will see the same interface; check the settings available to your account and OpenAI’s current ads information for your region.

There is no separate purchase, accessory, or software package required to use these controls. The relevant action is an account-setting change. If your plan changes, or if OpenAI changes availability in your region, the advertising experience and the menus you see may change too.
Which privacy setting should I change?
Choose the control that matches the data use you want to change. Ad personalization, model improvement, memory, and deletion have different purposes and scopes.
| Control | Where to look | What it affects | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad personalization | Settings > Ad Controls, if available | Signals used to select ads; turning it off can make ads less tailored. | Does not necessarily remove ads, and does not turn off model improvement or delete chats. |
| Model improvement | Settings > Data Controls | Whether new conversations in eligible personal workspaces are used to improve models. | Does not remove conversations from chat history or control ad personalization. |
| Memory | Memory controls, if available for your account | Whether ChatGPT uses saved information to personalize responses. | Is not the same as model training or the ad-personalization setting. |
| Ads data deletion | Ad Controls, if available | Requests deletion of ads data associated with your account; OpenAI says it may take up to 30 days to remove it from servers. | Is not the same as deleting chat history. |
| Individual ad options | The ad’s more-options menu | Lets you hide or report an ad and, where offered, see why it appeared. | Does not change the account-wide model-improvement setting. |
The table is useful when a setting appears not to have produced the result you expected. For example, disabling model improvement can stop new personal-workspace conversations from being used for training while leaving an ad exactly as it was. Deleting ads data can remove advertising-related data after the stated retention period while leaving your chat history intact. Memory controls affect response personalization, not necessarily ad eligibility.
How do I stop new conversations from being used to improve models?
For personal Free, Plus, and Pro workspaces, OpenAI says the Improve the model for everyone control is in Settings > Data Controls. Turning it off means new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI’s models, while those conversations can remain in your chat history.

- Select Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- Read any confirmation or scope text shown by your account and leave the setting disabled if that is your intent.
This is a separate choice from turning off ad personalization. It also is not a deletion request: a conversation can remain visible in your history even when it is excluded from model improvement under this control. If you want a conversation gone, use the product’s chat-deletion function separately; do not infer deletion from the training toggle.
OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API use is not used to train models by default. Managed workspaces may also have organization-level retention, memory, compliance, and access settings. Those training defaults do not establish whether ads are available; ads eligibility is a separate question governed by plan, region, and account context.
What happens to past chats, memory, and Temporary Chats?
Past chats and memory are distinct from the model-improvement control. OpenAI says selected signals from broader ChatGPT use, including past chats and memory, may inform ad selection when ad personalization is enabled. Memory controls, by contrast, are for personalizing ChatGPT’s responses; changing memory does not itself switch off model improvement.
If you disable or clear memory, that addresses saved information used to personalize replies. It should not be treated as a request to delete every past chat, erase ads data, or opt out of model improvement. Those actions have their own settings and scopes.

OpenAI says Temporary Chats will not show ads. Its consumer-data guidance also says temporary chats do not create or update memories and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. This is a separate mode, not a retroactive change to existing conversations or ads data. A temporary chat therefore addresses the circumstances of that conversation; it does not convert older chats into temporary chats.
How do I clear ads data or control one ad?
If the option is available, use Ad Controls to clear ads data. OpenAI says deleted ads data may remain on its servers for up to 30 days before removal and is no longer used to show ads after deletion. The stated retention period applies to ads data deletion; it should not be read as a promise about chat-history deletion.
The 30-day period is a maximum stated by OpenAI for removal from servers, not a countdown that necessarily appears in your interface. Keep the distinction between a deletion request and a personalization change: one asks for associated ads data to be removed, while the other changes future ad-selection signals.
For a particular ad, open its more-options menu. You can hide or report it, and the interface may offer an explanation of why it appeared. If you select Ask ChatGPT, that specific ad is shared into a chat. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot see the ads displayed to you by default, so sharing the ad is an explicit action.
Hiding one ad is a narrow, immediate action. It is not the same as turning off personalization for the account, and reporting an ad does not change model-training or memory settings. If an ad seems inappropriate, use the report function rather than assuming that a personalization change will address the individual placement.
What do advertisers see about my ChatGPT activity?
OpenAI says advertisers receive aggregated performance reporting, such as views and clicks, rather than users’ chats or chat history. Its stated policy also says advertisers do not receive memories, names, email addresses, precise location, IP addresses, or sensitive information. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its advertising system, not independent audit findings.
Rank #4
OpenAI also says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers and that its ad systems operate separately from the chat model. Separately, its consumer-data guidance says a limited set of authorized personnel or service providers may access content for specified purposes such as support, security, legal matters, or model improvement when applicable. OpenAI says consumer content is not shared for marketing or advertising purposes. That broader access explanation concerns OpenAI’s handling of consumer content; it is not the same as advertiser access.
In practical terms, an advertiser’s aggregate report might indicate that an ad was viewed or clicked across a group of users. It does not, according to OpenAI’s description, provide the advertiser with the conversation that preceded the ad. If you use “Ask ChatGPT,” however, you intentionally place that specific ad into a chat, so use that option only when you want ChatGPT to discuss the ad.
Why might Ad Controls be missing?
Ad Controls are not described as a universal setting for every ChatGPT account. OpenAI says they are available to eligible Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or will soon be available, and that personalized ads are not initially available in the EEA or Switzerland.
- Plan: Ads and the associated controls may differ by plan. OpenAI’s current description says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads.
- Region: Ads and personalization may not have launched in your location, or a regional limitation may apply.
- Workspace: A managed organization can set policies affecting controls, retention, memory, or access.
- Account type: Personal and managed accounts can expose different settings even when they are used on the same device.
- Rollout: Availability can change over time, so the in-product settings and current OpenAI Help Center pages are the best guides for your account.
The Privacy Center can explain privacy choices and direct you to relevant settings, but simply opening it does not change settings, delete data, or override workspace policy. If a control is absent, do not assume that repeatedly refreshing, deleting a chat, or changing memory will create it. Verify the signed-in account, check the plan and region, and ask a workspace administrator about organization-level restrictions.
What should I change for each privacy goal?
Start with the narrowest control that matches your goal, and check separately for any other data use you want to limit.
- “I want ads to be less tailored.” Turn off personalization in Ad Controls if it is available. This does not guarantee that ads stop or that the current conversation is excluded from ad selection.
- “I do not want new personal-workspace chats used for model improvement.” Turn off Improve the model for everyone in Data Controls. This does not erase chats from history.
- “I want to change how ChatGPT remembers information.” Use the memory controls available to your account. Treat memory separately from both ads personalization and model improvement.
- “I want to remove ads data already associated with me.” Use the ads-data deletion option if shown in Ad Controls, and allow for OpenAI’s stated removal period.
- “I want an ad-free ChatGPT experience.” Check whether your current plan and region provide an ad-free option; disabling personalization alone is not that option.
- “I want to understand one ad.” Use the ad’s menu to see why it appeared, where that explanation is offered, or choose Ask ChatGPT to discuss the specific ad.
- “I do not want an ad shown in a sensitive context.” Use Temporary Chat for a conversation when appropriate, remembering that OpenAI says temporary chats do not show ads and do not create or update memories.
A practical privacy checklist
- Identify whether your account is personal Free, Go, Plus, or Pro, or belongs to Business, Enterprise, Edu, or another managed workspace.
- Check Settings > Ad Controls for personalization, ads-data deletion, and any account-specific explanations.
- Check Settings > Data Controls separately if you do not want new personal-workspace conversations used for model improvement.
- Review memory controls if saved information should not personalize responses.
- Use Temporary Chat for conversations where you want the temporary-chat behavior described by OpenAI.
- For an individual ad, use hide, report, explanation, or Ask ChatGPT deliberately; each action has a different scope.
- Recheck the settings after a plan, region, or workspace change, because eligibility and menus can change.
This sequence prevents the most common mistake: changing one privacy switch and assuming that every other form of data use changed with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask ChatGPT why a specific ad appeared?
Open the ad’s more-options menu and look for an explanation option, when one is offered. You can also choose “Ask ChatGPT,” but that action shares the specific ad into a chat.
Best Value
Can OpenAI employees ever access my ChatGPT conversations?
OpenAI says a limited set of authorized personnel or service providers may access consumer content for specified purposes such as support, security, legal matters, or model improvement when applicable. That is a separate issue from what advertisers receive.
Does opening the OpenAI Privacy Center change my settings?
No. The Privacy Center can explain controls and point you toward settings, but viewing it alone does not change your choices, delete data, or override rules set by a managed workspace.
If I turn off ad personalization, will the current chat still matter?
It may. OpenAI says the current conversation can still be considered for ad selection even when broader personalization is turned off.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does turning off model improvement delete my chats?
No. OpenAI says new conversations can remain in chat history after you turn off Improve the model for everyone. Chat deletion is a separate action.
How long can deleted ads data remain on OpenAI’s servers?
OpenAI says deleted ads data may remain for up to 30 days before removal and is no longer used to show ads after deletion.
Are ads available on every ChatGPT plan?
No. OpenAI’s current description says ads may appear for Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads. Plan and regional rollouts can change, so check your account.
Do advertisers receive my conversations or memories?
OpenAI says advertisers receive aggregated reporting such as views and clicks, not chats, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise location, IP addresses, or sensitive information.
Do Temporary Chats show ads?
OpenAI says Temporary Chats will not show ads. It also says they do not create or update memories and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary.
The Bottom Line
Use Ad Controls to reduce ad personalization, not to promise an ad-free experience. Use Data Controls to limit model improvement, memory controls to manage saved personalization, and the separate deletion option to clear ads data. OpenAI says deleted ads data may take up to 30 days to be removed. Because plan, region, rollout, and workspace policy affect availability, verify the controls shown on your account and consult OpenAI’s current Help Center guidance.
