For most home and office networks, buy Cat 6. Choose certified Cat 6A when you are installing new cable in walls, need dependable 10-gigabit Ethernet (10GbE), or want a full-length structured-cabling channel that can carry 10GbE. Cat 7 is mainly justified by a specification that requires shielded ISO/IEC Class F cabling, while Cat 8 is intended for short, specialist server-room or data-center links rather than routine whole-house wiring.

A cable category does not make a network faster by itself. The negotiated link is limited by the slowest switch, adapter, transceiver, connector and cable segment. Buy for the application, distance and installation standard you actually have—not for the largest number printed on the jacket.

The short answer

  • Cat 6: The sensible default for ordinary 1 GbE home and office connections. It is commonly specified to 250 MHz and can support shorter 10GBASE-T links when the complete channel is suitable.
  • Cat 6A: The preferred choice for new in-wall cabling and a full 100 m 10GbE structured-cabling channel. It is a 500 MHz class cable designed for the practical 10GBASE-T use case.
  • Cat 7: A shielded, ISO/IEC Class F category associated with about 600 MHz in the cited comparison. It can be appropriate where the installation specification calls for that construction, but it rarely improves a normal RJ45 network.
  • Cat 8: A 2,000 MHz class specialist cable for short, high-speed links. ISO/IEC Class I and Class II descriptions use 30 m channels; the cited technical guide describes up to 25 or 40 Gbit/s over 30 m. It is not a sensible substitute for Cat 6A in a typical house.

What the Cat number actually tells you

“Cat” means category: a set of electrical performance requirements for balanced twisted-pair copper cabling. The category describes limits such as insertion loss, crosstalk and usable frequency. A higher number is not a universal speed guarantee. Ethernet equipment still decides the link rate, and the installed channel must meet the requirements for that rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequency is a test-performance class, measured in megahertz (MHz), not the data rate in gigabits per second. The comparison figures below come from the cited category comparison and technical guide: 250 MHz for Cat 6, 500 MHz for Cat 6A, about 600 MHz for Cat 7 and up to 2,000 MHz for Cat 8. A 2,000 MHz rating does not mean a Cat 8 cable will make a 1 GbE switch negotiate at 40 Gb/s.

Think in terms of a channel, not a loose patch lead. The channel includes the cable in the wall, outlets, patch panels, patch cords and plugs. A high-category cable connected to poorly terminated or lower-rated hardware may perform only as well as the weakest part.

Cat 6, Cat 6A, Cat 7 and Cat 8 compared

Category Frequency figure in cited material Typical Ethernet decision Distance guidance from the material Shielding and connector considerations Installation and cost implications
Cat 6 250 MHz Ordinary 1 GbE; shorter 10GBASE-T links when channel conditions permit No guaranteed full-length 10GbE distance is established here; verify the complete channel Unshielded versions are common; use hardware rated for the cable Easiest and usually the least complex option for general-purpose wiring
Cat 6A 500 MHz Practical choice for 10GbE, including new structured cabling Designed for a full 100 m 10GbE structured-cabling channel Available in shielded and unshielded constructions; terminate with matching rated hardware Thicker, less flexible runs can require more space and care than Cat 6
Cat 7 About 600 MHz Use when the installation calls for ISO/IEC Class F or its shielding requirements Do not infer a longer 10GbE reach solely from the category label Shielding is part of the construction; confirm whether the product uses RJ45 or another connector system More demanding bonding, termination and compatibility work; generally more costly to install
Cat 8 Up to 2,000 MHz Short, specialist 25/40 GbE links in server-room or data-center environments ISO/IEC Class I and II descriptions use 30 m channels Shielded construction and exact component compatibility matter Least suitable for long residential runs; cable and termination are comparatively complex

The 250, 500 and 600 MHz figures are category-comparison data attributed to Datwyler; the publication year is not stated on the cited page. The 2,000 MHz figure comes from the MAG Kabel technical guide, whose publication year is also not stated. The 30 m Cat 8 channel description comes from ISO/IEC TR 11801-9901 (2014).

Cat 6: the right default for 1 GbE

Cat 6 is the economical, practical answer for desktops, televisions, access points, printers, game consoles and other devices using 1 GbE. Its commonly specified 250 MHz performance gives substantial headroom over older categories, while ordinary RJ45 equipment is widely available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cat 6 can also carry 10GBASE-T over shorter links when the channel’s length, bundling, terminations and electromagnetic environment meet the requirements. That qualification matters: a Cat 6 label alone is not a promise of 10GbE across any distance. If you are replacing an existing short patch lead and both endpoints support 10GbE, Cat 6 may work; test the negotiated link rather than assuming it.

Choose Cat 6 when

  • Your switches and network adapters are 1 GbE.
  • You are replacing patch cords rather than opening walls.
  • The run is ordinary office or home length and there is no defined 10GbE requirement.
  • Flexibility, easy termination and low installation complexity matter more than maximum headroom.

Cat 6A: the 10GbE and new-build choice

Cat 6A is the practical recommendation for new structured cabling where 10GbE may matter. Its 500 MHz class and specified performance support a full 100 m structured-cabling channel for 10GBASE-T when the cable, connectors, patching and installation all meet their ratings. This is why it is the safer choice for a house, office or workshop being wired once and expected to serve for years.

IEC’s catalogue describes significant technical changes in IEC 61156-6-1:2007, including “new requirements for new cables Cat6A, Cat7A for 10 GBase-T applications.” That language concerns cable requirements; it does not mean every product marketed with a higher category automatically delivers 10GbE in every installation.

Plan for Cat 6A before pulling cable

  • Use solid-copper cable intended for permanent installation, not a thin flexible cord as an in-wall substitute.
  • Buy jacks, patch panels and plugs whose category rating matches the planned channel.
  • Allow more bend radius and pathway space than a small Cat 6 patch lead may need; bulky or shielded constructions are harder to route.
  • Keep terminations consistent and test the completed channel at its intended rate.

Cat 7: when shielding and Class F are the reason

Cat 7 is associated with ISO/IEC Class F cabling and shielding requirements. The cited comparison places it at about 600 MHz. Its value is therefore tied to the installation specification, electromagnetic environment and connector system—not simply to the number 7.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many products sold as “Cat 7” are offered with RJ45 plugs, while the underlying Class F ecosystem can use connector systems other than ordinary RJ45. Before buying, verify exactly what the listing certifies: cable category, connector type, channel components and whether the shield is continuous through the jacks and patch panel. A shield that is not properly terminated and bonded does not provide the intended installation performance.

Choose Cat 7 only when the project requires it

  • The building specification explicitly calls for ISO/IEC Class F construction.
  • Shielding is needed because of a documented interference concern.
  • You can install compatible outlets, patch panels and connectors rather than mixing unverified parts.

For a conventional RJ45 home network, certified Cat 6A normally provides the clearer 10GbE path with fewer compatibility questions. Cat 7 does not automatically extend a 10GbE link or increase the speed of ordinary network equipment.

Cat 8: a short data-center link, not whole-house wiring

Cat 8 raises the frequency class to as much as 2,000 MHz and is designed for very high-speed copper links over short channels. ISO/IEC TR 11801-9901 (2014) describes Class I as a “30 m channel based on upcoming Category 8.1 components” and Class II as a “30 m channel based on upcoming Category 8.2 components.” The cited MAG Kabel guide describes up to 25/40 Gbit/s over 30 m.

Those limits define the use case. Cat 8 makes sense for a switch-to-server, switch-to-switch or other rack-area connection where the endpoints and channel are engineered for 25 or 40 GbE. It is a poor default for long residential runs: the 30 m channel limit, larger cable, shielding and specialized terminations can add complexity without improving a 1 or 10 GbE network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Cat 8 when all of these are true

  • Both endpoints explicitly support the intended 25 or 40 GbE copper standard.
  • The complete channel is within the applicable 30 m design limit.
  • The rack, patching and grounding plan supports the shielded components.
  • The performance requirement justifies the extra cable and termination complexity.

Which cable for common situations?

Existing home or small-office 1 GbE

Use Cat 6 patch leads and outlets from a reputable, clearly specified manufacturer. Buying Cat 7 or Cat 8 will not raise a 1 GbE link above the capability of the switch and adapter. Spend effort on sound terminations, sensible routing and replacing damaged leads instead.

New walls, attic or conduit runs

Choose certified Cat 6A if the cable will be difficult to replace or if 10GbE could become useful. The higher category preserves a practical upgrade path for a full 100 m structured-cabling channel. Use Cat 6 only when the project has no 10GbE requirement and the lower complexity is the priority.

A short 10GbE connection between nearby equipment

Cat 6 may work when the channel is short and properly constructed. Cat 6A is the safer purchase when you want a predictable result without measuring whether a particular Cat 6 channel has enough margin.

A full-length 10GbE building run

Use Cat 6A and matching rated termination hardware. Do not select Cat 7 or Cat 8 merely because their category numbers are higher; the practical requirement is a compliant 10GBASE-T channel, not the largest frequency figure.

A 25/40 GbE rack or data-center link

Consider Cat 8 only after checking the endpoint specification, channel length and component compatibility. Keep the channel within the 30 m design described by ISO/IEC TR 11801-9901.

How to buy the right cable

  1. Write down the target link rate. Identify whether the endpoints are 1 GbE, 10GbE or a 25/40 GbE data-center interface.
  2. Measure the channel. Include the installed route and patching, not just the straight-line distance between devices. For a full-length 10GbE design, select Cat 6A rather than trying to stretch Cat 6 beyond a verified channel.
  3. Match every component. Check cable, keystone jacks, patch panels, plugs and patch cords. A lower-rated component can limit the channel.
  4. Select conductor material. For permanent runs, look for solid copper and a clear category certification. Do not rely on a marketplace title alone.
  5. Decide whether shielding is required. Use shielded construction only when the specification or environment calls for it, and plan the required compatible hardware and bonding.
  6. Verify the connector. Confirm that the plug and jack are the connector system your switch, patch panel and installation accept. This is especially important with products marketed as Cat 7 or Cat 8.
  7. Check the exact length and termination. Listings can differ by conductor, shield, plug termination and length. Treat unverified claims cautiously and retain the product specification.

Installation and verification

Before pulling cable

  • Choose a route that avoids crushing, sharp bends and unnecessary proximity to sources of electrical interference.
  • Leave enough slack at outlets and the patch location to reterminate without replacing the run.
  • Keep the cable’s jacket and twist geometry intact as close to the termination as the manufacturer’s instructions require.
  • For shielded Cat 7 or Cat 8, confirm how shields are bonded at both ends before installation.

After termination

  1. Inspect each plug, jack and patch-panel position for the correct pinout and secure seating.
  2. Use a wire-map tester to find opens, shorts, split pairs and reversed pairs.
  3. Test the completed channel with a certification tester appropriate to the category if you need a guaranteed 10GbE or data-center result.
  4. Connect the intended switch and adapter, then verify the negotiated speed in their management interface or operating-system network status.
  5. If the link negotiates below the target, substitute a known-good patch lead and test each segment separately before replacing the in-wall cable.

Common mistakes and fixes

“Cat 8 will make my network faster.”

A cable cannot raise a switch or adapter beyond its supported rate. Replace or upgrade the limiting network component first; otherwise a higher category is only unused headroom.

“The product title says Cat 7, so the installation is Class F.”

Check the actual certification, shielding construction and connector system. A marketplace title is not proof that the complete channel meets ISO/IEC Class F requirements.

“Shielding is always better.”

Shielding adds installation requirements. If the shield is not carried through compatible connectors and bonded correctly, you may gain complexity without the intended benefit. Use it for a defined interference or standards requirement.

“The cable failed, so the category is wrong.”

First isolate the fault: test the patch cords, inspect both terminations, check for split pairs and confirm that every active device supports the target rate. A single damaged or mismatched component can make a compliant cable appear defective.

Decision checklist

  • Buying a few cables for 1 GbE? Cat 6.
  • Wiring a building once and keeping a 10GbE option? Certified Cat 6A, solid copper, with matching hardware.
  • Following a Class F or shielding specification? Cat 7, but verify connectors, bonding and the complete channel.
  • Connecting 25/40 GbE equipment inside a rack or data-center area? Cat 8 within the applicable 30 m channel design.
  • Unsure? Match the slowest component and choose Cat 6A for new permanent wiring when 10GbE may matter; avoid paying for Cat 7 or Cat 8 without a specific technical reason.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Cat 6A cable be used with ordinary RJ45 equipment?

Yes, provided the cable is terminated with compatible RJ45 hardware and the equipment accepts that connector. The link will negotiate at the highest rate supported by all components, not automatically at 10GbE.

Does Cat 7 have a longer guaranteed range than Cat 6A?

Not on the basis of the category number alone. Cat 7’s distinguishing concern is its shielded Class F construction and associated connector requirements. Select the category for the specified channel and application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Cat 8 described as 25/40 GbE if many devices use RJ45?

Cat 8 is a cabling category for short high-speed copper channels; the endpoint equipment and connector implementation still determine which Ethernet variant is available. Confirm both before purchasing.

What should I check in an online listing?

Check the claimed category certification, solid-copper conductor, shielding description, plug termination and exact length. If any of those details are missing, the listing does not provide enough information to validate a planned channel.
