Makercise’s homemade metal shaper turns the idea of a small foundry-built machine shop into a working metal-cutting project. Reported by Brian Benchoff for Hackaday on April 20, 2019, the build follows the Gingery machine-shop book series and uses modern tools, including CNC. A metal shaper cuts by moving a cutter back and forth; the report names cutting keyways and planing a metal plate as examples of what it can do.
What exactly is a metal shaper?
A metal shaper is a reciprocating metal-cutting machine: its cutter travels back and forth across the workpiece. The repeated stroke gives it a familiar comparison to a jigsaw, though a shaper is a machine-tool process for cutting metal.
Shapers were once practical shop machines for jobs such as cutting keyways into a piece of stock. They can also plane the surface of a metal plate. These are examples of uses, not a measured account of the machine’s accuracy, finish, or capacity.
How does this homemade shaper fit the Gingery design lineage?
Makercise’s project is based directly on the Gingery series, a set of step-by-step books about building a machine shop. The sequence described in Benchoff’s report places a foundry and lathe before the shaper, with a mill later in the progression. The shaper is therefore part of a broader home-shop-building approach, rather than an isolated aluminium casting project.

- Heavy-Duty Steel Construction: The sheet metal bending brake is meticulously crafted from Q235 steel material. Its robust structure ensures durability over the long term. With its compact design, you can secure it to a workbench using screw-mounted installation holes or easily transport it from home to various work locations.
- Wide Application: This mini sheet metal bending machine achieves easy and efficient bending. It's sturdy enough to handle stainless steel sheets, copper sheets, aluminum sheets, iron sheets, galvanized sheets, steel sheets, and other sheet metal processing, making it perfect for professional production operations. It's applicable in various factories, workshops, home studios, or for personal use in daily tasks.
The title’s reference to cast aluminium should not be read to mean that casting alone makes a machine tool. The report describes a build that draws on the Gingery design and also uses modern tools and techniques, including a CNC machine.
How does a shaper compare with a milling machine?
The most useful distinction in the report is the cutting action: the shaper’s cutter reciprocates, moving back and forth, while a milling machine cuts with a rotating cutter. For surfacing a metal plate, the article notes that a Bridgeport milling machine is another option. It does not provide a controlled comparison of the machines, so it cannot establish which is faster, more accurate, or produces a better finish.

- Wide Range of Applications: Our jewelry rolling mill machine is suitable for gold, K gold, pure silver, 925 silver, copper, aluminum, and other highly malleable metals. It is ideal for crafting bracelets, rings, bangles, and other jewelry, catering to the needs of both jewelry professionals and DIY enthusiasts.
Does the Hackaday report provide build instructions?
No. Benchoff’s April 20, 2019 report supplies project context, but it is not a complete build guide. It does not give a machine model, dimensions, tolerances, alloy specification, machining parameters, or a full bill of materials. Readers interested in following the design lineage can look for a Gingery metal shaper book, but should check the current edition and listing before relying on them for a build.
The project’s use of CNC also matters: this was not presented as a build made only with preindustrial methods. The report does not identify the CNC machine or specify how it was used, so those details cannot be inferred from the article.
