Cash App’s privacy notice describes information that may be shown to other Cash App customers to help identify a person, but does not describe a Venmo-style public social payment feed. Both services let users review transaction records. Neither app’s privacy controls make a payment anonymous from its recipient or the service provider.

These controls do not support a universal privacy winner. Venmo documents more explicit payment-audience choices; Cash App’s cited notice describes customer-to-customer identification information rather than a public feed. Your practical exposure depends on settings, profile type, counterparties, and the information included in a payment.
What other Cash App customers may see
Cash App’s Privacy Notice, effective June 8, 2026, says the company collects transaction details such as timing and location, parties’ names, descriptions, amounts, devices, and payment methods. It also says some information—including a person’s name, Cashtag, prior transaction history, join date, and whether that person appears in the viewer’s contacts—may be available to other Cash App customers to help identify the person they transact with.
This is not the same claim as saying every Cash App payment is publicly posted or that all listed details are visible on every screen. The notice does not establish the exact visibility of every item in every situation. Its advertising and related data-sharing choices under Account & Settings > Privacy concern those data uses; do not treat them as a payment-audience setting.

How Venmo payment visibility works
Choose a default and check each payment
Venmo provides three payment privacy levels: Public, Friends, and Private. Set the default at Me > Settings > Privacy. You can also adjust an individual payment before or after sending it. Venmo says it uses the more restrictive setting selected by the payment partners, so a payment is not made more visible because one partner chose a less restrictive option. Make past payments more private
Venmo allows users to make past payments more private; it does not allow past payments to be changed to a more public setting. A separate option in Privacy settings hides all past transactions. The documentation describes controls over visibility, not deletion of Venmo’s own records.

Control your friends list separately
Payment privacy and friends-list privacy are distinct. At Me > Settings > Privacy > Friends List, Venmo lets you choose whether the list is visible to other Venmo users, only your friends, or private, and lets you turn off visibility of your profile in other users’ lists. How to review your transaction history
Cash App records
Cash App’s Terms of Service say receipts are available in Activity in the app and at cash.app. Statements can be viewed after logging in, and users can access 12-month and 24-month account transaction history in the app or on the account website. Venmo records
Venmo users can see recent transactions in the app’s Me tab and view or download monthly statements as CSV files in the app or on the web. Statements are selected by year and month. Venmo lists personal, Teen, business, and charity profiles; for Teen Accounts, statements are accessible to the parent or guardian account holder. Venmo Transaction History
Keep the records you need through each service’s activity view, history, or statements. Hiding a Venmo payment from view is not evidence that the payment record has been erased from Venmo’s systems.

Payment privacy is not anonymity or account security
A privacy setting controls who can see payment activity in the ways the service documents. It does not conceal a transaction from the other party, who needs information to make or identify the payment, or from the service provider. The cited sources do not establish the retention period for every record or every detail’s visibility in every Cash App context.
Security features protect access to an account or payment rather than control the audience for activity. Cash App says its Security Lock can require a face, fingerprint, or PIN before a payment, and that it sends alerts for sign-ins, large transactions, and account-setting changes. It also describes encryption for transactions and messages in transit. These are company-stated features, not independent audit findings. Cash App Security

Use payment notes carefully
Cash App announced required notes for peer-to-peer payments on May 28, 2025, describing them as a way to track prior transactions. Venmo also requires a note, and the payment’s privacy setting governs visibility of its context. Cash App’s required-notes announcement · Venmo payment privacy guidance
- Use a truthful, concise description that is useful to you and the recipient.
- Do not put account numbers, passwords, home addresses, or other secrets in a note.
- Before sending, check the payment’s audience setting as well as the note; limiting visibility does not make sensitive note content safe to share with the recipient or provider.
Practical checks before and after sending
- Before sending: On Venmo, open Me > Settings > Privacy and check the default; inspect the privacy choice on the individual payment. On Cash App, distinguish the documented advertising/data-sharing choices under Account & Settings > Privacy from payment visibility.
- Keep the note restrained: Include only accurate context needed to identify the transaction.
- After sending: On Venmo, adjust an already-sent payment to a more private setting if needed, or use the hide-past-transactions option. Review friends-list visibility separately.
- For your own records: Use Cash App Activity/history or Venmo’s Me tab and monthly statements instead of assuming that a hidden feed entry deletes provider-held records.
