Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your iPhone or iPad won’t update over Wi‑Fi, check that the device supports the update, has enough free storage, and can reach the internet—not just that the Wi‑Fi icon is showing. Then retry on the same network, test another network, remove and download the update again if needed, or use a Mac or PC. Keep the device connected to power while the update installs.
Start with the model, backup, power, and update settings
Apple groups update problems into a few common causes: an incompatible device, insufficient storage, a slow download, trouble reaching the update server, or an installation that does not complete. The same troubleshooting applies to iPadOS as well as iOS when Apple’s instructions refer to iPhone or iPad.
- Check compatibility. Identify the exact iPhone or iPad model and compare it with Apple’s current supported-device list. An unsupported model cannot install the latest software, but it may still have an update available even if it cannot install the latest major release. Compatibility lists change, so check the current list rather than relying on a device’s age or assuming every iPhone supports the newest release.
- Back up first. Apple recommends backing up to iCloud or a computer before updating.
- Connect to power and Wi‑Fi. A stable internet connection and sufficient available storage are required for a wireless update; keeping the device connected to power helps during installation.
- Check for an update. Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is offered, tap Download and Install and follow the prompts. Some updates may not be available wirelessly.
If the update is missing or says the device is incompatible
Verify the model against Apple’s current compatibility list. If the model is not supported for the latest release, there is no setting that will make it eligible. Check Software Update for any version that is still offered for that device; inability to install the newest major release does not necessarily mean no update is available at all.
If there is not enough storage
Open Settings > General > [device] Storage and review what is using space. Apple suggests either enabling Offload Unused Apps or deleting apps manually. Offloading targets apps you do not use often; manual deletion lets you choose what to remove.

If the update itself offers to temporarily remove apps to make room, choosing Continue allows that removal. Apple says those apps are automatically reinstalled after the update. Avoid deleting personal content you have not backed up if you may need it.
If the download is slow
Download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed. Stay connected to Wi‑Fi and avoid downloading other content at the same time. You can continue using the device while the download proceeds; it will notify you when the update is ready to install. Keep the device connected to power for installation.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
If the device cannot check, download, or verify the update
Match the message on your screen to Apple’s documented alerts. They include “Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update,” “Unable to Check for Update. Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet,” “Unable to Download. This update is not available because you are not connected to the internet,” and “Unable to Download. This update requires a Wi-Fi network connection to download.” These messages can indicate a connection or update-server access problem; the Wi‑Fi symbol alone does not confirm that internet access is working.
- Retry on the same Wi‑Fi network. A temporary connection or server issue may clear on another attempt.
- Try a different Wi‑Fi network. If the update works there, the original network may be the issue. If it fails across networks, the problem may follow the device or involve the update file.
- Check for VPN or proxy interference. Apple notes that VPN or proxy connections may prevent the device from contacting update servers.
- Delete and redownload the update file if the problem recurs. Go to Settings > General > [device] Storage, find the downloaded update, and delete it. Then return to Settings > General > Software Update and download it again.
- Use a computer if wireless updating still fails. See the computer-update section below.
If Wi‑Fi itself may be the problem
- Open Settings > Wi‑Fi, make sure Wi‑Fi is on, and confirm the intended network is selected. Check that Airplane Mode is off.
- If the Wi‑Fi control is dimmed, restart the device and check again.
- If the device says No Internet Connection, see whether other devices can use the same network. Then test the iPhone or iPad on another Wi‑Fi network or in another location. This helps distinguish a problem with one network from an issue that follows the device.
- For a network-specific problem, check that the router is powered, the device is within range, and the router firmware is current. If the router supports more than one frequency, try another supported frequency. Restarting the router and modem can refresh the connection.
- As a targeted diagnostic, Apple suggests uninstalling VPN or security software, restarting the device, and testing Wi‑Fi. If removing it restores the connection but you need the software, contact its provider or VPN manager. Work- or school-managed configurations may require help from the organization’s IT team.
Same Wi‑Fi, another network, or a computer?
| Option | Best use | What it tells you or requires |
|---|---|---|
| Retry on the same network | First retry after a temporary error | Quick to try; success does not establish why the first attempt failed. |
| Try another Wi‑Fi network | When the first network may be blocking or failing to reach the internet or update server | Tests whether the issue is specific to the original network. The alternate network is not inherently better. |
| Update with a Mac or PC | When wireless updating is unavailable or continues to fail | Requires access to a compatible computer and a physical connection. The computer app depends on its operating-system version. |
Use Reset Network Settings only after simpler checks
Resetting network settings is a later troubleshooting step, not a first fix: it removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, mobile settings, VPN settings, and APN settings. Before using it, consider whether you will need those configurations to reconnect. If a school or business manages the device or network, consult its IT administrator first.

Install through a Mac or Windows PC
Apple identifies a computer-based update as an alternative when an update does not appear or wireless updating keeps failing. For physically connected updates, Apple’s deployment guidance names Finder or Apple Configurator on Mac and Apple Devices on PC. The exact app and steps depend on the computer’s operating-system version, so follow Apple’s current instructions for that computer.

If the installation appears stuck
Update time varies with the update size and the device’s available storage. Check whether the progress indicator is still moving, and leave the device connected to power rather than casually interrupting an active installation. If the battery runs out, reconnect the device to power and turn it on so the update or restore can complete. If the device is frozen, use Apple’s separate instructions for a frozen iPhone or iPad.
