Cancel ChatGPT on the platform that bills you. Web subscribers go to Settings → Billing → Cancel plan → Cancel. iPhone and iPad subscribers cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT. Google Play subscribers use Google Play → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel subscription. Self-service Business customers use Workspace settings → Billing → Manage plan → Cancel subscription.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. A normal cancellation stops the next renewal while paid features usually remain available through the current billing period. Uninstalling the app is not cancellation, and a refund requires a separate request through the service that processed the payment.
Which service is billing my ChatGPT subscription?
The first step is identifying the billing platform. ChatGPT subscriptions purchased on the website, through Apple, through Google Play, and through a self-service Business workspace have different cancellation controls. The app you use to access ChatGPT does not necessarily reveal where billing is managed.

Check each place before canceling or replacing a plan, especially if you have changed phones or moved between the website and a mobile app. OpenAI says subscribing on more than one platform can create multiple active subscriptions and charges.

If you cannot find ChatGPT in one platform’s subscription list, that platform may not be the biller. Look at the next renewal information in ChatGPT Billing, Apple Subscriptions, and Google Play Subscriptions rather than starting a replacement subscription immediately.
How do I cancel ChatGPT Plus or Pro bought on the website?
For a subscription purchased at chatgpt.com, cancel from ChatGPT’s billing settings. The same route applies whether the paid plan is Plus or Pro.
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account that receives the charge.
- Open the account menu and select Settings.
- Select Billing.
- Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.
- Complete the confirmation prompts and keep the cancellation confirmation for your records.
After cancellation, the plan normally stays active until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Cancellation prevents the next automatic renewal; it does not reverse a payment that has already been processed.
What if the website does not show Billing?
Confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns the subscription. A different login can show the free plan even when another account is being billed. If you still cannot access billing, contact OpenAI Support and provide the account or billing email plus any two of the payment card’s last four digits, card expiration date, billing address, or date of the most recent charge. Never send the full card number.
How do I cancel ChatGPT from an iPhone or iPad?
Apple manages subscriptions purchased through the App Store. Cancel in iOS or iPadOS Settings, not by deleting or uninstalling ChatGPT.
- Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad used for the subscription.
- Tap your name at the top of Settings.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If the ChatGPT subscription screen has no Cancel Subscription button and instead displays an expiration date, Apple may already have recorded the cancellation. The expiration date is the date through which the current paid period is expected to remain available.
Deleting your ChatGPT account does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription. Cancel the Apple subscription first, then decide whether you also want to delete the account.

How do I cancel ChatGPT on Google Play?
Google Play controls subscriptions purchased through the Android app or Google Play checkout. Use the Google account that made the purchase.
- Open the Google Play app.
- Open Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel subscription.
- Follow Google’s confirmation prompts and save the resulting status or email.
You can also manage the subscription from the Google Play subscriptions website while signed in to the purchasing Google account. If ChatGPT is absent, check other Google accounts on the device before assuming there is no active subscription.
For a Google Play purchase, account deletion is not a substitute for checking the Play subscription. Verify that Google Play shows the subscription as canceled before deleting the ChatGPT account or moving to a different billing platform.
How do I cancel a self-service ChatGPT Business subscription?
A self-service Business workspace is canceled from workspace billing controls. You need access to the workspace’s billing settings.
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open Workspace settings.
- Select Billing.
- Choose Manage plan.
- Select Cancel subscription and complete the confirmation.
If you cannot see workspace billing settings, ask the workspace owner to perform the cancellation. An individual member’s account access does not necessarily include permission to change the workspace plan.
When should I cancel to avoid another charge?
Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. OpenAI’s guidance uses that buffer because a request made too close to renewal may be recorded after the next charge has already been processed.
Example: monthly renewal
If the next billing date is June 18, submit the cancellation by June 17 at the latest, and earlier is safer. Check the billing screen or the relevant Apple or Google Play subscription page for the date that applies to your account.

What happens to paid features?
An ordinary cancellation normally leaves paid features available until the end of the current billing period. Cancellation is therefore different from an immediate termination: you stop the next renewal, but the time already purchased is not shortened in the usual case.
What if the renewal already happened?
Cancel immediately to prevent another renewal. Then check the cancellation confirmation and the next billing date. If the charge was processed before the cancellation took effect, cancellation alone does not automatically refund it; submit a separate refund request through the appropriate channel.
Why do people cancel ChatGPT subscriptions?
Most cancellations are practical rather than technical. A paid plan may no longer justify its recurring cost, the account owner may not be using paid features, or the person may be switching from a mobile-store subscription to direct website billing.
- Reduce recurring expenses: cancel before the next renewal when paid usage has fallen.
- Stop unused capacity: a plan can remain active even when you rarely sign in.
- Change billing platform: moving between Apple, Google Play, and the website requires care to avoid overlapping plans.
- Prevent duplicate charges: OpenAI warns that subscriptions started on more than one platform can remain active simultaneously.
- Close a workspace: a Business owner may no longer need the paid workspace plan.
Before starting a new subscription on another platform, verify that the old platform shows a cancellation or an end date. Otherwise, you can have two independent billing records and two renewal schedules.
Does deleting ChatGPT or uninstalling the app cancel billing?
Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel a subscription. Removing the app only removes the software from the device; it does not change the subscription held by the website, Apple, or Google Play.

Website or Google Play purchase
For a purchase made on chatgpt.com or through Google Play, request a refund through OpenAI Support while signed in to the account associated with the charge. Include enough information for support to locate the transaction, but do not send a full payment-card number.
OpenAI’s refund guidance says accidental web purchases are generally eligible when requested within 14 days of the charge, subject to its policies. That is a request window, not an automatic entitlement, and it applies to accidental web purchases rather than every type of charge.

Request a refund for an Apple App Store purchase directly from Apple. OpenAI cannot replace Apple’s store-level refund process for that transaction.
What information should I prepare?
If you cannot sign in to a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, contact OpenAI Support with the account or billing email and any two of these identifiers: the payment card’s last four digits, card expiration date, billing address, or date of the most recent charge. Never provide the complete card number.
What should I do if I was charged after canceling?
Work through the timing and account checks before opening a duplicate support case.
- Find the cancellation confirmation or the platform’s canceled status.
- Compare the cancellation time with the next billing date. A request made less than 24 hours before renewal may have arrived after processing began.
- Check whether another ChatGPT account uses a different email address.
- Check ChatGPT Billing, Apple Subscriptions, and Google Play Subscriptions for a second active subscription.
- If the charge is still unexplained, request help from OpenAI Support for website or Google Play billing, or from Apple for an App Store charge.
Do not assume that a canceled subscription on one platform cancels a second subscription on another. Each platform maintains its own subscription record.
What if I cannot sign in to the account being billed?
For direct ChatGPT billing, OpenAI Support can investigate without you exposing your full card number. Provide the account or billing email and any two permitted billing identifiers: the last four card digits, expiration date, billing address, or most recent-charge date.

For Apple subscriptions, recover access to the Apple ID that purchased the subscription and use its Subscriptions screen. For Google Play subscriptions, recover the Google account used for the purchase and manage ChatGPT from Google Play Subscriptions. Store-account recovery is separate from ChatGPT password recovery.
How can I switch from a mobile subscription to website billing safely?
Cancel the existing Apple or Google Play subscription first, then wait until its paid period ends before starting a website subscription, unless you have a specific reason to accept overlapping periods. This sequence reduces the risk of two active plans renewing independently.
- Identify whether Apple or Google Play is currently billing you.
- Cancel on that store and record the displayed expiration date.
- Keep using the existing paid access through that date if needed.
- After confirming the old subscription will not renew, subscribe on the website if direct billing is your preferred platform.
Do not rely on uninstalling the mobile app or deleting the account to end the store subscription. The store’s subscription page is the authoritative place to confirm that renewal has been turned off.

- Identify the billing platform before touching the account.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date.
- Use the exact platform menu path rather than uninstalling the app.
- Save the confirmation and note the paid-access end date.
- Check for a second account or a second platform subscription before switching plans.
- Submit a separate refund request if a charge needs review.
