Yes. You can watch custom Plex Live TV channels away from home if Plex Remote Access is enabled, the viewing account meets Plex’s remote-video playback rules, and your Plex Media Server can transcode the stream. A channel working on your home network alone does not guarantee it will work remotely.
What you need for remote custom Plex channels
- A configured custom channel source: For example, ErsatzTV creates channels from media in your library and can supply them to Plex as a Live TV/DVR source. Its Plex integration guide says Plex Pass is required for this integration.
- Plex Remote Access: Plex must be able to reach your server from outside your home network.
- An eligible playback account: Plex’s current rules for remote personal-video playback apply to affected apps.
- Transcoding capability: Plex says Live TV requires a server capable of transcoding.
- A supported Plex client and a working remote connection: Supported apps and versions can change, so check the client you plan to use.
You do not need an antenna or TV tuner just to watch software-generated channels such as those from ErsatzTV. Those are for receiving over-the-air broadcasts, a different Live TV setup.
Set up the custom channel and verify it at home
First make sure the channel itself is available to Plex on the local network. For ErsatzTV, add it as a DVR source in Plex’s Live TV & DVR settings. If Plex does not discover the source automatically, enter its network address, then provide the XMLTV guide URL as described in the ErsatzTV setup instructions. Confirm that the channel and guide appear and play at home before troubleshooting remote access.
Enable Plex Remote Access
- In Plex Web, go to Settings > Server > Remote Access.
- Make sure the server is signed in to a Plex account, enable Remote Access, and check that Plex reports it as enabled.
- If automatic configuration fails, Plex says its setup commonly relies on router UPnP or NAT-PMP. Its Remote Access guide explains manual port forwarding: forward an external port to port 32400 on the server, then verify the status again.
A remote connection that is not successfully established will prevent the server’s custom channels from being reached over the internet, even if they work locally.

Check the accounts and subscription requirements
Plex states that, since 2025-04-29, apps updated to its new experience require one of these for remote playback of personal video: the server administrator has Plex Pass, the viewer has Plex Pass, or the viewer has Remote Watch Pass. Plex says the requirement applies as apps are updated, so the result can depend on the app and account combination. See Plex’s remote playback requirements.
There is a separate integration requirement: ErsatzTV’s Plex guide says Plex Pass is required for using ErsatzTV with Plex. Meeting a remote-playback account rule does not, by itself, establish that every custom-source integration requirement is met.

Make sure the server can stream the channel
Plex’s Live TV documentation says Live TV requires the ability to transcode content. The server must therefore be capable of handling the channel stream and the playback client’s needs. Actual performance depends on the server, stream, client, and network; a low-powered host may struggle.
Plex lists supported apps across major mobile, desktop, and TV platforms, but app support and versions can change. Check the current Plex apps and devices list for the device you intend to use.

Test from outside your home
- Use a supported Plex client on a network other than your home network, such as a phone on cellular data.
- Sign in with the account that will actually watch the channel and try playback.
- If it fails, check the Remote Access status first, then confirm the account eligibility, local channel-source health, server transcoding capacity, and client support.
The cited Plex documentation does not establish one internet upload-speed figure that guarantees playback for every custom channel. Test the actual stream and remote connection rather than relying on a universal speed target.
Custom channels are not Plex’s free streaming channels
Custom server channels—such as those created with ErsatzTV from a personal media library—are added to the server’s Live TV/DVR guide. Plex’s free ad-supported streaming channels are a separate online service; Plex says they require neither special hardware nor Plex Media Server. They are not channels generated from your library. See Plex’s free Live TV information.
