Yes. Xbox Cloud Gaming works with compatible controllers, and it also supports keyboard-and-mouse play in games that specifically offer that input mode. A controller is the safer choice because Xbox says most games require a gamepad; a keyboard and mouse will not make every streamed game playable.
Before you start, check the game’s input-support indicator and make sure your device and browser or app are supported. Xbox’s 2025 guidance reported more than 130 cloud games with mouse-and-keyboard support, but that support is title-specific.
Can you use a controller with Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Yes. You can use a compatible controller connected to your device by Bluetooth or USB. Xbox says most games require a gamepad, so a controller is the most broadly useful option when you are unsure which inputs a particular game accepts.

Xbox game pages use a controller icon to indicate controller support. That can help you check a game before opening a stream. If you are using a gamepad, connect it to the device you will play on, either wirelessly over Bluetooth or with a USB connection, then start the game through a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming route.
Does Xbox Cloud Gaming work with a keyboard and mouse?
Yes, but only in games that support keyboard-and-mouse input. Xbox began rolling out cloud support for this input mode in May 2024. In its 2025 reporting, Xbox said more than 130 cloud games supported mouse and keyboard. The count is a dated Xbox figure, not a promise that every game in the catalog—or every game available in your region—supports those controls.
For the browser flow Xbox documented, open xbox.com/play in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, sign in, and choose a game marked for mouse-and-keyboard support. Xbox also said its PC app would display a mouse-and-keyboard badge for supported titles. A keyboard and mouse being connected to your computer does not itself add support to a game that lacks the relevant input mode.
Keyboard-and-mouse support is useful if you prefer those controls or are playing on a computer, but it is not a universal substitute for a gamepad. Treat the game’s badge or listing as the deciding check. If the game does not indicate keyboard-and-mouse support, choose a compatible controller or another game rather than assuming that the stream will recognize those inputs.

Which input should you choose for your device?
The best choice depends on both the game and where you are playing. Controllers have broader game coverage, while keyboard and mouse are limited to titles that expose that mode. The table summarizes the practical differences supported by Xbox’s guidance.
| Input | Compatibility | Connection or route | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compatible controller | Works with controller-playable games; Xbox says most games require a gamepad. | Bluetooth or USB, subject to device compatibility. | Phones, tablets, TVs, consoles, PCs, and other supported devices when the game expects a gamepad. |
| Keyboard and mouse | Only games with mouse-and-keyboard support; Xbox reported 130+ cloud games in 2025. | Xbox documented browser play at xbox.com/play in Edge or Chrome; the device and game must support the input. | PC browser play when the selected game has the relevant support indicator. |
| Both during one session | Available in supported sessions where both modes are supported. | Press a keyboard key to activate keyboard-and-mouse input; press the Xbox button to return to controller input. | Players who want to change input without restarting, if the game supports both modes. |
On phones and tablets, a Bluetooth controller or a suitable mobile controller may be more practical than a separate keyboard and mouse. On a PC, keyboard-and-mouse play can be convenient when the game supports it. A TV setup generally calls for a compatible gamepad, but the particular TV or streaming device must itself be supported. These are fit considerations, not rules: game support and device compatibility still determine what works.
How do you start a cloud game with a controller?
First verify that your device can use Xbox Cloud Gaming and that the game supports a controller. Then connect a compatible gamepad before launching the stream. Xbox’s browser guidance says Xbox controllers can connect through Bluetooth or USB.
- Check the game. Look for the controller icon on the Xbox game page or listing. Do not assume that every cloud game accepts a controller just because it streams.
- Connect the controller. Pair it to your device over Bluetooth or connect it with USB. The exact pairing controls vary by controller and device, so use the instructions for those products rather than assuming a single universal menu path.
- Open a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming route. On a browser, use the Xbox cloud-play site and a browser supported for your device. On app-supported platforms, use the applicable Xbox app or cloud-gaming entry point.
- Sign in and launch the game. If the controller is not responding, check that it is still connected to the device and that the selected game supports controller input.
Xbox’s getting-started guidance describes a compatible gamepad as necessary for most games, not every possible title. A game that supports keyboard and mouse may offer another way to play, but check that game’s listing before relying on it.

How do you play with keyboard and mouse?
Use a game that is explicitly marked for keyboard-and-mouse input and follow Xbox’s documented browser route. Support is specific to the title; connecting the peripherals is not enough on its own.
- Confirm the game supports the input. Look for the mouse-and-keyboard badge or support information in the Xbox PC app or game listing.
- Use a documented browser. Xbox’s May 2024 rollout guidance described browser play through Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
- Open the cloud-play page. Go to
xbox.com/play, sign in, and select a supported game. - Connect or check your peripherals. Make sure the keyboard and mouse are connected to the device you are using. Device-level connection does not override the game’s support requirements.
- Activate the desired input. In a session that supports both modes, pressing a keyboard key switches to keyboard-and-mouse input. Pressing the Xbox button switches back to controller input.
The May 2024 announcement initially described a rollout covering 25 titles. That initial figure describes the rollout at that time; it is not the current total. Xbox later reported 130+ supported cloud games in 2025. Availability can change, so use the current game listing rather than relying on an old list of supported titles.
Can you switch between keyboard and mouse and a controller without restarting?
In supported sessions, yes. Xbox says pressing a keyboard key activates keyboard-and-mouse input, while pressing the Xbox button switches back to the controller. Both modes must be supported for the game and session; this behavior does not mean every game can use either input.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis switching behavior can be useful when a game supports both control schemes or when you want to move between devices or play styles during a session. If the expected input does not take over, first check the game’s support information. Then confirm that the device has recognized the relevant controller or peripherals. Restarting is not the stated requirement for switching in a supported session.

Which devices and browsers can you use?
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected smart TVs and streaming devices, handhelds, and Meta Quest among its cloud-gaming platforms. Steam Deck support is described as beta support. The exact route differs: browser play is documented for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, ChromeOS, and Steam Deck, while app support covers consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, TVs, and Meta Quest.
Those platform categories do not mean every model, browser version, region, or game is automatically supported. Xbox says availability varies by region, device, game, and Game Pass plan. For keyboard-and-mouse play in particular, the documented browser instructions name Edge and Chrome; check Xbox’s current device and browser information before troubleshooting a device-specific problem.
A controller can be connected to a supported device by Bluetooth or USB, but the connection method and compatibility are not identical across devices. If you are choosing a setup, check both ends of the chain: the cloud-gaming route available on the device and the input method accepted by the game. A peripheral that pairs successfully with a phone, TV, or computer may still not be accepted by the selected game.

Plan availability and the games included can change, and access varies by region. Check the current Xbox game listing and plan details for the specific title you want to play; an input badge answers what controls a game supports, not whether your account has access to it.
What should you check when an input does not work?
Work through the game, device, route, and connection rather than assuming the problem is the cloud stream itself. The key distinction is whether the chosen game supports the input mode you are trying to use.
- The game does not respond to keyboard and mouse: confirm that its listing or app badge identifies mouse-and-keyboard support. This mode is title-specific.
- The controller is not detected: check its Bluetooth or USB connection to the device and confirm that the game indicates controller support.
- The browser route is unclear: Xbox’s documented keyboard-and-mouse browser steps use Edge or Chrome at
xbox.com/play. Check current Xbox device and browser guidance for your platform. - The game is missing or unavailable: catalog access and availability vary by region, device, game, and plan. Confirm that the title is currently offered to your account.
- The controls changed unexpectedly: in a supported session, keyboard input activates keyboard-and-mouse mode, and the Xbox button returns to controller mode.
Xbox also publishes network and browser requirements for cloud play. If the stream itself is failing, check those current requirements separately from input compatibility: a controller or peripheral can be connected correctly while the device, browser, network, or account still prevents a session from working.

Can I use a PS5 controller on Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Xbox names the PlayStation DualSense among compatible controller families in its guidance. Compatibility still depends on the device and the game, so check the game’s controller indicator as well.
Does a PS4 controller work with Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Xbox’s guidance also names the DualShock 4 as a compatible controller family. It is a controller option, not a way to enable mouse-and-keyboard support in a game that lacks that mode.
Can I play Xbox Cloud Gaming for free?
Xbox says supported free-to-play cloud games can be played with a free Microsoft account. Access to the broader cloud catalog requires a supported Game Pass plan, and eligibility varies by region.
Which games first received Xbox Cloud Gaming keyboard-and-mouse support?
Xbox’s May 2024 rollout described an initial group of 25 titles, including Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, and The Sims 4. That was the rollout’s initial lineup, not a current complete list.
