Windows 11 can show lock-screen widgets while your device is locked, so you can see glanceable updates without signing in. To open a widget’s full details, however, you must sign in.
What you can see without signing in
Microsoft says lock-screen widgets provide information “at a glance without unlocking your device.” The lock screen may show current weather and other information. What appears depends on the widgets available and configured for your device; not every widget in the full Windows Widgets catalog is available on the lock screen.
Seeing an update is different from opening it. Selecting a lock-screen widget and signing in opens its full details in Microsoft Edge, on the landing page chosen by that widget’s provider. Microsoft Support’s lock-screen instructions explain this behavior.
How to manage lock-screen widgets
- Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
- Under Widgets, review the current list. Use a widget’s more-options menu to remove it or customize it if the provider supports customization.
- Drag widgets to change their order. Select Add widget to browse available options. Only widgets that support a small size can be added to the lock screen.
- To hide lock-screen widgets, switch Widgets off.
How Windows estimates your location
Microsoft says lock-screen content may be personalized using an estimated location from Windows Location service when that service is enabled. Otherwise, Windows may estimate location from your internet connection’s IP address. Microsoft does not specify the accuracy of these estimates.
