Yes. PlayStation Portal can stream select compatible PS5 games directly from Sony’s cloud servers, so a PS5 console does not have to be available. You do still need a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, an adult PlayStation account in a supported region, an eligible game, and broadband Wi-Fi. That is different from Remote Play, which connects Portal to a paired PS5.
How Portal cloud streaming differs from Remote Play
Cloud Streaming runs eligible games from Sony’s servers. Remote Play sends a game from a paired PS5 to Portal, so the console must be available and the game must be installed on it. Sony says Remote Play does not require a PlayStation Plus membership; Portal cloud streaming does require Premium.

Sony announced Portal cloud streaming on November 5, 2025. Its launch announcement explains that a cloud session can continue while a PS5 at home is powered off or in use by another account: Sony’s cloud-streaming launch announcement.
What you need to stream games
- PlayStation Plus Premium: Cloud streaming on Portal requires Premium; a lower PlayStation Plus tier is not enough for this feature.
- An adult PlayStation account: Sony’s launch announcement limits Portal cloud streaming to adult accounts in supported markets. Availability depends on your country or region.
- A compatible game: The feature works with select titles, not every PS5 game.
- Broadband Wi-Fi: Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps for Portal use and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are Sony’s connection guidelines, not a guarantee of smooth play; actual quality depends on network conditions.
Eligible games can include supported digital PS5 games in your library and compatible titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. The selection can change over time and vary by region. Check Portal’s Search screen or Sony’s cloud-streaming game list for current eligibility rather than assuming a game remains available because it appeared in a launch announcement.

- Make sure the account has an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
- On Portal, open the cloud-streaming experience and use Search to find a compatible game.
- Select an eligible title and start streaming. If it does not appear as streamable, it may not be included in the current catalog for your account or region.
Sony’s March 17, 2026 Portal update added a 1080p High Quality option for Cloud Streaming and Remote Play. It uses a higher bitrate than the default 1080p Standard mode; restart the session after changing the setting for it to take effect. The update also introduced interface and notification refinements. See Sony’s Portal software update announcement for the details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Portal cloud streaming a replacement for owning a PS5?
It can let you play some compatible PS5 games without a console, but it is not a complete replacement for PS5 ownership. Streaming depends on Premium, supported service regions, game eligibility, and a reliable Wi-Fi connection. Games outside the eligible cloud selection are not made playable through this feature; Remote Play still requires a paired PS5.

Sony reported that Cloud Streaming monthly users grew 162% year over year in January, and that more than 50% of Portal users were Premium subscribers. Sony’s update footnote ties those figures to its own data from December 2025 to January 2026; they are company-reported usage figures, not independent measurements.
