Yes. Linux does not require artificial-intelligence features to install, boot, run applications, or receive security updates. Ubuntu’s documentation states that a fresh Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS installation contains no built-in AI tooling. AI appears only when a distribution, application, extension, cloud account, or service adds it—and those additions are generally optional. An “AI-free” Linux computer is therefore a configuration you choose and maintain, not a permanent property of the Linux kernel. You can select conservative defaults, decline AI packages and extensions, disable controls in individual applications, and review privacy settings separately.
What does Linux need in order to run without AI?
Linux needs a kernel, a boot process, hardware support, system libraries, and user applications. None of those requirements includes an AI model, an AI assistant, or a connection to an AI service. The kernel provides core functions such as process scheduling, memory management, device access, and networking; distributions assemble the kernel with installers, desktop environments, package repositories, and defaults.
That division matters because a distribution can change its desktop or bundled applications without changing what Linux itself requires. An application can also add an AI assistant independently of the distribution. Removing or declining that application does not make the operating system unusable.
“Without AI” can mean different things, so define your goal before changing settings:

- No AI network traffic: applications are not signed in to AI services and do not send prompts or files to remote backends.
- Maximum software control: you prefer a distribution whose project limits bundled software and clearly documents licensing and package sources.
A setup can satisfy one definition without satisfying all four. For example, a fresh installation may have no AI tools, while a user-installed editor extension later connects to an online service.
Does Ubuntu include AI by default?
According to the Ubuntu Wiki, “As of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, a fresh installation of Ubuntu Desktop contains no built-in AI tooling.” That statement applies to a new Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS installation and its default software at the time documented. It does not promise that every future release, derivative, or application added later will remain AI-free.
Ubuntu describes desktop AI as planned future functionality rather than a prerequisite already present in the fresh installation. If a later release changes its defaults, check that release’s documentation and installer choices instead of assuming the 26.04 behavior continues unchanged.

Even on a system with no built-in AI, you can install an AI assistant, a local model runtime, or an editor extension yourself. Conversely, if a future desktop component offers AI, it may still be removable or disableable; the exact control will depend on that release and application.
Where can AI features enter a Linux system?
Distribution and desktop defaults
A distribution maintainer decides which desktop components, utilities, repositories, and services appear in a standard installation. Two distributions using the same Linux kernel can therefore make different choices about optional assistants or search features. Read the installer’s software-selection page and the distribution’s release notes when avoiding bundled additions.

Applications and extensions
Most practical AI controls are at application level. Code editors, browsers, image tools, office suites, and communication clients may ship an assistant or support extensions. Installing an application from a package repository, a vendor download, or an extension marketplace can change your AI exposure without changing the operating system.
Local model services
A user can install a model runtime and download model files to run inference locally. Local processing avoids sending prompts to a provider, but it is still an AI feature on that computer. If your objective is no AI at all, do not install these runtimes or remove them and their startup services.

Accounts and cloud connections
An application may contain AI code but remain inactive until you sign in, enable a feature, or select a model provider. Network access, account status, and extension settings can therefore matter as much as the package list. Disabling a feature and signing out are separate actions worth checking.
How do I disable AI in Visual Studio Code on Linux?
Visual Studio Code documents a built-in setting named chat.disableAIFeatures. At user or workspace scope, it hides the editor’s built-in AI features and disables Copilot extensions. The setting is useful when you want to keep the editor but prevent its AI surfaces from being available.
- Open Visual Studio Code’s Settings editor from File > Preferences > Settings on a typical Linux desktop, or use the gear menu in the lower-left corner.
- Search for
chat.disableAIFeatures. - Enable the setting at User scope to apply it across your account, or at Workspace scope to apply it only to the current project.
- Close and reopen relevant editor views if an AI panel was already open, then check that the built-in AI commands and Copilot extensions are no longer available.
- If you do not need the extensions at all, open the Extensions view, locate the AI-related extension, and choose its disable or uninstall action. Removing an extension prevents it from being re-enabled by an old workspace configuration.
Visual Studio Code’s FAQ says that if you disable AI functionality in the editor, or do not log in to a Copilot subscription from the editor, your data is not sent to Copilot backend services. That statement concerns those backend services; it does not configure unrelated telemetry, location, browser, or operating-system privacy settings.

How can I remove AI tools I installed myself?
Start with the application and extension lists rather than deleting random files. Record what you intend to keep, then use your distribution’s normal package manager or the application’s own uninstaller to remove assistants, model runtimes, downloaded models, and optional integrations. If a tool installed a background service, disable that service using the same system-management method documented by your distribution before deleting its files.
Check all installation sources: system packages, per-user packages, language-package managers, container images, AppImage files, and editor extensions. A model file may remain in your home directory after the front-end application is removed, consuming storage without being visible in the desktop menu. Search your user data and startup applications for entries you recognize, and remove only components you can identify.
Do not remove a package merely because its description uses terms such as “smart” or “assistant.” Read the package description and dependency information first. Some accessibility, search, or language components may use statistical techniques without being marketed as AI; whether they fit your policy depends on your definition.
Does disabling AI also make Linux private?
No. AI controls and general privacy controls address different data paths. Ubuntu’s privacy settings cover items such as usage history, location services, and cleanup of temporary files. Review those controls independently even when no AI application is installed.
Use this sequence for a new desktop:
- Open the desktop’s Settings application and inspect the Privacy section.
- Decide whether to retain usage history, which can affect recent-file and application lists.
- Review location services and disable them if your workflow does not need location-aware functions.
- Configure temporary-file cleanup according to your retention and recovery needs; aggressive cleanup can remove files you still need.
- For each application, read its account, synchronization, diagnostics, and network options. An application can send telemetry even when all AI features are off.
Keep normal security updates enabled. Avoiding AI does not justify postponing kernel, browser, library, or firmware patches, and an AI-disabled editor still needs account and extension security.

Which Linux distribution is best for avoiding AI?
There is no universal “AI-free” distribution. Defaults, repositories, desktop choices, hardware support, and release policies vary, and any distribution can host software that a user installs later. Compare the properties that determine how much control you have.

The Free Software Foundation defines free GNU/Linux distributions as those that “only include and only propose free software” and reject nonfree applications, programming platforms, drivers, and firmware. That is a software-freedom criterion, not a guarantee that every package or workflow is AI-free. A free distribution can still let a user install an AI program, while a mainstream distribution may offer clear controls to omit one.
How do I set up and maintain an AI-free Linux workstation?
Use a repeatable checklist whenever you install or upgrade:
- Choose the edition deliberately. Read the installer’s default-software description and select a minimal or standard option according to your hardware needs.
- Inventory defaults after first boot. Review installed applications, enabled extensions, startup entries, and background services. Keep a record so a later change is easy to spot.
- Install only required applications. Decline optional assistants, model runtimes, and AI extensions. Prefer package sources you understand and can remove cleanly.
- Configure each application. Look for AI, assistant, experimental, account, diagnostics, and network settings. In Visual Studio Code, set
chat.disableAIFeaturesat the appropriate scope. - Review accounts. Sign out of AI providers and remove saved tokens when the application no longer needs them. A dormant account connection can reactivate a feature after an update.
- Configure desktop privacy separately. Check usage history, location services, temporary-file cleanup, and diagnostics rather than assuming an AI switch covers them.
- Keep security updates on. Patch the operating system and applications normally; AI avoidance and security maintenance are independent decisions.
- Recheck after upgrades. Read release notes, inspect newly installed packages and extensions, and verify that your application settings survived the upgrade.
What are the trade-offs of an AI-free setup?
Advantages
- Fewer background components and account integrations to understand.
- Less risk that prompts, source code, documents, or images are sent to an AI backend through an enabled feature.
- A simpler application inventory, which can make troubleshooting and policy enforcement easier.
- Greater alignment with a software-freedom policy when you also evaluate package licensing and repositories.
Costs and limitations
- You may lose optional assistance, code suggestions, summarization, image tools, or accessibility features supplied by an application.
- Some workflows or teams may require an AI-enabled tool, creating compatibility or productivity trade-offs.
- Distribution and application defaults can change, so an AI-free configuration needs occasional audits after upgrades.
- Removing optional packages without checking dependencies can break a workflow; use documented package-management and extension-removal paths.
The practical compromise is selective control: leave the operating system and security updates intact, then disable or remove AI only in the applications and accounts where you do not want it.

Verification should test both presence and activity. After installation or a major update, review the application menu, installed-package list, extension list, startup applications, and running user services. Look for recognizable assistant names, model runtimes, downloaded model directories, and provider logins rather than relying on a single desktop icon.

Open the settings page of software used for sensitive work and confirm its AI switch is still off. In a shared project, inspect workspace-level configuration as well as your personal settings; a project can enable an extension or setting for everyone who opens it. If your policy prohibits network access to AI providers, apply that policy at the network or account layer as well as in the application, because a disabled user interface is not the same as a firewall rule.
What should you expect in future Linux releases?
Distribution policies and application defaults are not fixed. Ubuntu’s statement about 26.04 LTS describes that release’s fresh Desktop installation, while its documentation also discusses desktop AI as planned future functionality. A later release could add an optional component, rename a setting, or change where a feature is controlled.
Before upgrading, read the release notes, check the installer’s software choices, and identify replacement settings for applications you rely on. Treat “AI-free” as a maintained configuration with a documented checklist, not as a one-time guarantee attached to a distribution name.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Linux computer be completely offline and still run normally without AI?
Yes. Core Linux operation, local applications, and locally stored documents do not require an AI service or an internet connection. You still need a safe way to obtain and verify security updates, such as temporarily connecting through a trusted network or using an approved update process.
Will disabling AI stop every application from collecting telemetry?
No. Diagnostics, crash reports, usage statistics, synchronization, and location services are controlled separately. Review each application’s privacy and account settings and the desktop’s own Privacy panel.
Can an administrator enforce an AI-free policy for several Linux users?
An administrator can standardize the installed package set, restrict extension installation, remove provider credentials, and apply network rules, but the exact mechanisms depend on the distribution and management tools. User-level settings such as Visual Studio Code workspace configuration should be supplemented with system-level controls when the policy must apply to everyone.
Is running a local language model more private than using a cloud assistant?
Local inference can keep prompts and files on the machine, but it is still AI software and may create its own logs, services, and update sources. It meets a local-processing goal, not a policy that forbids AI components altogether.
