A Google Wallet contactless card that is already set up may work for a limited number of taps without the phone being online, but Google does not publish a fixed offline allowance or guarantee that every payment will succeed. For an ordinary shop purchase, expect to unlock the phone and verify your identity if prompted. Transit has limited, system-dependent exceptions.
Can Google Wallet pay in a shop without internet?
It may. If your card is already added and set up, the phone meets Google’s requirements, and NFC is on, a contactless payment may work without mobile data or Wi-Fi. Google’s current consumer guidance does not promise a specific number of offline transactions or say that every offline payment will be approved. A 2023 Google Wallet Community Product Expert described offline transactions as limited and advised reconnecting periodically; that is community guidance, not a guaranteed allowance. “Offline” can also describe the payment reader rather than your phone. Google’s documentation about offline device authentication addresses open-loop transit readers with limited or unreliable internet. It is not a general assurance that retail terminals will accept every offline Wallet payment. Google for Developers’ open-loop transit architecture explains that transit operators need to enable offline device authentication for those readers.
Can you pay with Google Wallet while the phone is locked?
For an ordinary shop purchase, unlock the phone and be ready to verify your identity. Google says a screen lock must be configured, and you may be asked to verify with it when paying. Once the phone is unlocked, you can usually tap without opening the Wallet app. Google’s guidance states: “To make payments with Google Wallet, you must have a screen lock set up on your device and verify it’s you for your security.” Google Wallet Help: “Verify it’s you to make a purchase”.

Supported screen locks include a PIN, pattern, password, or qualifying Class 3 biometric unlock. Some weaker biometric and smart-unlock methods do not meet the requirement; check Google’s verification guidance for supported options.
Does transit work when the phone is locked or asleep?
Transit behavior depends on the payment type and the agency. You may be able to tap a supported transit card without waking the phone. Google also provides a setting to skip verification for supported transit card payments, but this does not turn off verification for other purchases, and some transit systems do not support the exception. A contactless debit or credit card may still prompt you to unlock the phone. Google’s verification help describes the exception and its limits.

Saved transit passes have their own rules: some can be used without waking the phone, while some systems require you to unlock it and select the pass. Follow the transit operator’s instructions; where the system requires it, use the same device and payment method when tapping in and out. - Your phone supports NFC, and NFC is turned on.
- Google Wallet or Google Pay is set as the default NFC payment app.
- Your payment card is supported in your country and has been fully set up.
- You have a supported screen lock and know how to unlock the phone.
- Your phone and software meet Google’s security requirements. Google lists Android 9 or later and current Google Play Services and Wallet for the app; rooted devices are not supported. See Google Wallet app requirements.
- For transit, the agency supports Google Wallet and, if you want to skip verification, supports that option.
