Yes. A compatible phone can connect to a mobile network with an eSIM profile even when no physical SIM card is inserted. An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the device, but two other conditions still apply: the exact device and regional model must support eSIM, and the carrier must offer eSIM activation for that device, country and plan.

Activation is normally digital. Your provider may push the profile automatically, let you transfer service from another phone, give you a QR code, send you through its app, or provide manual details. Have Wi-Fi or a hotspot available unless the device and provider explicitly document an exception.

What does it mean to use an eSIM without a physical SIM?

An eSIM is a programmable SIM built into a phone, tablet or other cellular device. Instead of inserting a removable card, you download a carrier profile to the embedded hardware and the device uses that profile to authenticate on the mobile network. The phone does not need a card in its SIM tray for the eSIM line to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The word “eSIM” describes the SIM technology, not a particular plan. Your carrier still has to create or transfer service and provision the profile. Removing a physical SIM therefore does not create service by itself; it only removes one possible way of identifying the device to the network.

Apple describes an eSIM as a digital SIM with no card required. Samsung similarly describes Galaxy eSIM as mobile service without a physical card. Those statements describe the technology; they do not guarantee that every model or carrier supports it.

What must be compatible before you activate an eSIM?

Both ends of the connection must qualify: the exact device must contain eSIM hardware, and the intended carrier must support eSIM for that device, regional variant and plan. A phone family can contain models with different capabilities in different countries, so a brand name alone is not enough.

Check the exact model and regional version

Find the model number in the device settings or on its documentation, then compare it with the manufacturer’s current eSIM list for your country. Do not assume that an eSIM-enabled version sold in one market has the same feature in another. Carrier firmware, regulatory versions and local sales bundles can change availability.

Confirm the carrier and plan

Ask the carrier whether it can activate your exact model by eSIM in your country and on the specific plan you want. Carrier directories are organized by country or region and activation type because support is not universal. A carrier may support eSIM for postpaid service but not a particular prepaid plan, or may support only selected devices.

Use an EID check only in the context where it applies

An EID is the identifier associated with an eSIM-capable device. AT&T Prepaid’s instructions use the presence of an EID as an eligibility check for that service and say a device without one needs a physical SIM for its prepaid process. That is a carrier-specific rule, not a universal test for every network; still confirm compatibility with your intended provider.

Check whether the phone is carrier-unlocked

If you plan to install an eSIM from a different provider, the phone may need to be unlocked. On an iPhone, Apple’s documented check is Settings > General > About > Network Provider Lock; “No SIM Restrictions” indicates an unlocked phone in that guidance. Other manufacturers and carriers use different labels and policies.

  • Record the exact model number and country or regional version.
  • Confirm that the device has an EID or another manufacturer-listed eSIM indicator.
  • Ask the carrier about eSIM support for the exact model and plan.
  • Check lock status before buying a different carrier’s travel or local plan.

How do you activate an eSIM with no physical SIM?

Follow the route your provider supports. Keep the activation email, QR code, confirmation code or account credentials available, and connect the phone to Wi-Fi or a hotspot before starting unless the provider documents an exception.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up and update the device. Install the current system update that your manufacturer and carrier recommend. Keep the phone charged and connected to a reliable internet source.
  2. Open the cellular setup screen. On an iPhone, this is reached through the cellular or mobile-data settings; on a Galaxy device, use the SIM or mobile-network manager. Labels differ by model and software version.
  3. Choose the provider’s activation method. The available button may be labeled carrier activation, add eSIM, transfer from another phone, scan QR code, or enter details manually.
  4. Complete account verification. The carrier may request a login, one-time confirmation code, identity check or account PIN. Use only the details supplied through the carrier’s official channel.
  5. Download the profile. Scan the QR code, open the carrier’s activation link or app, or enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code if manual entry is offered. The phone contacts the provider and installs the profile.
  6. Assign line settings. If the phone has more than one line, select which number handles calls, messages and mobile data. Read the roaming prompt carefully before accepting it.
  7. Test service. Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and check cellular data, place a call if voice service is included, and send a text if SMS is part of the plan.
  8. Keep the confirmation details. Save the provider’s instructions and any recovery information. A replacement phone may require a new transfer or profile download.

Which activation methods are available?

Method What you need Important limitation
Carrier activation An eligible account and an internet connection The carrier must push the profile to your device and plan.
Transfer from another phone Both devices nearby and a provider-supported transfer flow Support varies by model, operating system, carrier and region.
QR code The carrier’s current QR code and the phone’s camera or eSIM setup screen A code is provider-specific; do not reuse a code intended for another line.
Carrier app or link The provider’s app, account access and internet The app route may be limited to certain plans or countries.
Manual entry SM-DP+ address, activation code and any confirmation code One mistyped character can prevent installation; copy the values exactly.

Do you need Wi-Fi to set up an eSIM?

Usually, you should plan on using Wi-Fi or a hotspot. The device needs an internet path to contact the carrier and download the eSIM profile, and Apple instructs users setting up a supported iPhone to connect to Wi-Fi or a hotspot.

Wi-Fi is not an absolute rule for every device. Apple notes that some eSIM-only iPhone models in some countries or regions can activate without Wi-Fi. Because that exception depends on the model, market and activation state, follow the on-screen instructions and your carrier’s requirements rather than assuming cellular data will work before the profile is installed.

If you are replacing a physical SIM while traveling, arrange internet access before removing the old line. A second phone’s hotspot, hotel Wi-Fi or an airport connection can provide the temporary connection, but avoid unsecured networks when entering account credentials.

Can you transfer an existing line to eSIM?

Often, yes, when the carrier and both devices support a transfer. The transfer process moves or reprovisions the carrier service; it is not the same as simply copying a file. Some providers require the old phone to be nearby, signed in and connected, while others issue a new QR code or require account verification.

Do not erase the old device or remove its working SIM until the new profile has installed and service has been tested, unless the carrier specifically tells you to do so. If the transfer fails, the carrier may need to cancel the pending profile and issue another activation.

Can you use a travel eSIM without a physical SIM?

Yes, provided the phone supports eSIM, the travel provider covers your destination and the device is unlocked when a different carrier is being used. Apple documents local and worldwide travel eSIM options, but each plan sets its own countries, validity period and included services.

Check these terms before buying

Plan detail Question to answer
Country coverage Does the plan include every country or territory on the itinerary?
Data allowance Is data limited, throttled after a threshold or unlimited for a stated period?
Voice and SMS Are calls and text messages included, or is the plan data-only?
Validity When does the term start, and how many days does it last?
Activation timing Does validity begin at installation, first network connection or another event?
Hotspot use Does the provider allow tethering, and are there limits?
Identity requirements Is passport or other identification needed before installation?
Unlock requirement Will the phone accept a profile from this provider?

Install the travel profile while you have reliable internet, but read the provider’s activation rule first so you do not start a short validity period earlier than intended. Keep your home line available for account recovery if needed, and manage roaming settings according to your home carrier’s terms.

Can you keep your normal number while using a travel eSIM?

Some supported iPhone models can keep two eSIMs active at once, allowing a home line and a travel line. This behavior is not universal across phones, carriers or plans, so verify the model’s dual-SIM capability before departure.

Choose the travel line for mobile data and decide whether the home line should remain enabled for calls and messages. Leaving the home line active can create roaming charges under your home carrier’s rules; disabling it can prevent those charges but may also stop incoming calls or texts to that number.

What should you do if eSIM activation fails?

The phone cannot find an eSIM option

Recheck the exact model and regional version. If there is no eSIM menu or EID, contact the manufacturer and carrier; do not infer compatibility from another phone in the same product family.

The QR code or app reports an error

Confirm that the code belongs to your line, that the phone is unlocked when required, and that you have a stable internet connection. If the code was already used or the carrier account is not eligible, request a fresh activation from the provider rather than repeatedly scanning it.

The profile installs but there is no service

Restart the device, verify that the new line is enabled for cellular data and check whether the plan covers your location. For travel service, confirm country coverage and that the provider’s activation instructions were completed. The carrier may need to finish provisioning on its side.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calls or texts do not work

Check the plan terms: a travel eSIM may provide data without voice or SMS, while a domestic plan may require separate voice and messaging provisioning. If those services are included, ask the carrier to verify the line configuration and your account’s verification status.

You deleted the profile by mistake

Do not assume the same QR code can be reused. Contact the provider for its recovery or reissue procedure; some carriers require a new code or identity check before reinstalling service.

Is an eSIM better than a physical SIM?

Neither format is universally better. An eSIM is convenient when you want digital activation, a second line or travel service without swapping cards. A physical SIM can be simpler when you frequently move service between phones or use a device and carrier that do not support eSIM.

  • Choose eSIM when your exact device and plan support it, you have dependable internet for activation and you value digital transfers or multiple lines.
  • Choose a physical SIM when the carrier does not offer eSIM for your plan, you need rapid card-based switching between compatible phones or you are troubleshooting without internet access.
  • Use both when the device supports dual SIM and you need a home number plus a separate travel or work line.

Carrier policies, device software and regional availability change. Treat the manufacturer and intended carrier as the final authority for your exact combination rather than relying on a generic compatibility list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the practical checklist before removing your physical SIM?

  1. Write down the exact device model, regional version and current software version.
  2. Locate the EID or confirm eSIM support in the manufacturer’s documentation.
  3. Ask the carrier to confirm eSIM activation for that model, country and plan.
  4. Check the phone’s lock status if the eSIM comes from another provider.
  5. Obtain the correct activation route, QR code, app link or manual credentials.
  6. Secure Wi-Fi or a hotspot and keep the phone charged.
  7. Install the profile, assign data and voice defaults, then test service.
  8. Only after testing, remove or disable the old physical SIM if you no longer need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep my phone number when changing from a physical SIM to an eSIM?

Usually the number stays with your carrier account, but the carrier must convert or transfer the line to the new eSIM profile. Ask the provider to confirm the number-preservation process before deleting the old SIM or closing the old device session.

Do all eSIM plans include calls and text messages?

No. A plan can include data only, or data plus voice and SMS, depending on the provider and destination. Check the plan’s service description before assuming that a data connection also supplies a phone number.

Can I activate an eSIM on a phone that is locked to another carrier?

A locked phone may reject a profile from a different provider. Check the carrier-lock status and request an unlock from the original carrier when eligible before purchasing a separate local or travel plan.

What information should I save in case I replace my phone?

Keep your carrier account access, the line’s confirmation details and the provider’s instructions for transfer or reissue. A new phone may require a fresh activation even when the old eSIM line was working normally.
