Yes. A VPN works without incognito mode: it routes network traffic through the VPN and can conceal your apparent IP address and encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN provider. Incognito mode changes what your browser saves on your device; it is not a network-privacy tool. Use either one or both, depending on whether you want less local browsing history, more privacy from your network provider, or both.
What is the difference between a VPN and incognito mode?
A VPN and incognito mode address different kinds of privacy. A VPN affects network traffic routed through it; incognito mode limits some records your browser keeps locally during a private session. Neither makes you anonymous, and neither replaces the other.

What a VPN changes
Mozilla describes a VPN as creating a secure tunnel that conceals your IP address and encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN provider. This can make your traffic less visible to an ISP or public Wi-Fi provider. When a VPN is installed and enabled device-wide, it can cover traffic from apps other than your browser too. The key qualification is “routed”: a VPN does not protect traffic that bypasses its tunnel.
What incognito changes
Chrome’s Incognito mode limits information saved to the device for that browsing session. Google says session site data and cookies are discarded when all Incognito windows are closed. This helps with local traces on a shared device; it does not route traffic through a different network or conceal your activity from the network provider.

Do you need incognito if you already have a VPN?
Only if you also want to limit what the browser stores on the device. A VPN does not delete browser history or other records already saved locally, while private browsing does not encrypt or reroute your network traffic. If you want both protections, use the VPN and open a private window; the tools operate independently.

- Other people who use the same device: Private browsing can reduce the browser history and session data left on that device. It is a local-browser measure, not a way to hide activity from websites or network operators.
- An ISP or local Wi-Fi provider: A trustworthy VPN can make traffic routed through it less visible to those parties. The VPN provider becomes a party you must trust instead.
- Both concerns: Enable the VPN normally, then browse in a private window when you also want fewer local session traces.
These are not guarantees of secrecy. A website can still recognize you if you sign in, and a VPN provider may be able to track where you have been online. The FTC cautions that a VPN app generally does not make a user entirely anonymous.

No. A VPN changes network routing; it does not erase history already stored by your browser or stop the browser from keeping local records under its ordinary settings. Use the browser’s history controls to remove existing history, or use private browsing for a session where you want fewer local traces.

Keep the two kinds of records separate in your thinking. The browser’s local history is a record on the device. Network traffic is information moving between the device and online services. A VPN addresses some exposure of routed traffic; it is not a history-cleanup tool.
What does a VPN not hide?
A VPN is a privacy measure, not an anonymity guarantee. It can change who can observe aspects of routed traffic, but it cannot make every part of your online activity unidentifiable.

- Your account identity: If you sign in, the site knows which account is being used. Google explicitly notes that Incognito does not prevent you from identifying yourself to a website by signing in.
- All traffic leaving the device: Only traffic that actually travels through the VPN is protected by that tunnel. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends full-device VPN routing where possible to reduce traffic leaking outside it.
- Visibility to the VPN provider: Trust shifts from the ISP or Wi-Fi provider to the VPN provider. Mozilla notes that VPN providers can track where users have been online, so the provider’s practices matter.
- Every app’s privacy practices: The FTC warns that some VPN apps may not encrypt all traffic and some may share information with third parties. Installing an app is not by itself proof that all traffic is protected.
In practical terms, assess the VPN app and its provider rather than treating the word “VPN” as a blanket guarantee. Check what traffic the app routes and what its privacy disclosures say. The available official guidance does not establish that every provider handles data the same way.
How can you use both tools together?
You do not need to connect Incognito to the VPN or configure them as one feature. Enable the VPN in the way its app or device settings provide, then open a private browsing window in your browser if you also want to limit local session records.

- Decide what you want to limit. For fewer traces on a shared device, use private browsing. For privacy from an ISP or local Wi-Fi provider, consider a trustworthy VPN. For both, use both.
- Enable the VPN. Confirm that it is connected and that the traffic you care about is routed through it. If app coverage matters, look for device-wide routing; traffic outside the tunnel is not protected.
- Open a private window if needed. Start an Incognito or private-browsing session for the browsing activity where you want fewer local browser records.
- Do not treat either setting as identity protection. Signing in still identifies you to the site, and the VPN provider is an additional party to trust.
- Close the private session when finished. Chrome says session site data and cookies are discarded when all Incognito windows close. This does not clear ordinary browsing history saved before the session.
Which option should you choose?
For a quick decision, match the tool to the privacy problem rather than choosing one as a universal replacement for the other.
- Choose private browsing when the main concern is leaving less browser history or session data on a device you share.
- Choose a VPN when the concern is exposure of network traffic to an ISP or public Wi-Fi provider, and you are willing to trust the VPN provider.
- Use both when you want to address both local browser traces and network routing.
- Use neither as a promise of anonymity. Account sign-ins, app behavior, provider practices, and traffic outside the VPN tunnel remain relevant.
Mozilla sums up private browsing narrowly: “Incognito mode keeps your browser history private, and that’s pretty much it.” That is a useful reminder to distinguish local browser privacy from network privacy rather than assuming that either tool solves both.

Will using a VPN erase history I saved before turning it on?
No. A VPN does not remove records that are already in the browser. You can use the browser’s history controls to delete those records from the device.
When does Chrome delete Incognito cookies and session data?
