Sometimes—but a VPN alone does not give you permission to work from another country. An employer-approved VPN can protect an authorized connection from a managed device, yet your company may block access from particular destinations, restrict certain data, or prohibit international work altogether. Before you travel, obtain written approval from HR and IT or security for the country, dates, work activities, device, and services you plan to use.

Use the organization’s own VPN, authentication, and security controls. Do not try to disguise your location, defeat a country block, or replace the company setup with a consumer VPN. Local law, sanctions, export controls, the sensitivity of your data, and the privacy of your workspace all affect whether the trip is acceptable.

What can a work VPN do while you are abroad?

A corporate VPN can create an encrypted connection between an approved device and your organization’s network or cloud access gateway. That helps protect traffic on an untrusted connection and can enforce company authentication and access policies. It does not change your employment agreement, immigration status, tax position, export-control obligations, or the destination restrictions configured by your employer.

A VPN may help with A VPN cannot establish
Protecting traffic between a managed device and the organization’s approved access service That HR and security have approved working from the country you are visiting
Applying company authentication, device checks, and network policies That a blocked service or account should be unblocked
Reaching internal applications that are designed for remote VPN access That local law, sanctions, export controls, or contractual rules permit the work
Reducing exposure on an untrusted network when configured correctly That a personal or consumer VPN is an acceptable substitute for the company system

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recommends a secure VPN for approved devices used in foreign telework, together with encryption and multifactor authentication (MFA). The UK Government’s enterprise IT guidance states that a device-wide VPN provides the best protection for information traveling over an untrusted network. Those recommendations assume that the work itself has already been authorized.

“Before undertaking international remote working, users must ensure they have the requisite approvals in place in line with their local organisational HR and security policy.” — UK Cabinet Office, Guidance 1.4, section 19

Do I need my employer’s permission before working from another country?

Yes. Approval is the first gate, not a step to take after the VPN fails. Employers set their own rules according to the employee’s role, the destination, the information involved, regulatory obligations, and their ability to secure and monitor the connection. Government guidance can illustrate good practice, but it is not a universal private-sector policy.

What to request in writing

  • The exact country or countries, travel dates, and time zone in which you will work.
  • The work activities and services you intend to use, such as email, collaboration tools, source repositories, customer systems, or administrative consoles.
  • The approved device, VPN client, MFA method, and any travel-specific account or device configuration.
  • Whether access is limited by country, IP range, account, device posture, application, or data classification.
  • How to report a lost device, suspicious approach, suspected compromise, or an authentication failure while away.

Ask for a clear answer rather than assuming that a successful login means the activity is permitted. Some organizations allow low-sensitivity work but prohibit access to regulated, classified, export-controlled, or customer-restricted information from abroad.

How should I prepare a company laptop for international travel?

Follow the organization’s travel process and test every required control before departure. The following sequence catches problems while IT staff can still change your account or provide a replacement device.

  1. Confirm approval. Give HR and IT/security the destination, dates, role, planned tasks, and services. Keep the written approval available offline in case you cannot reach corporate systems.
  2. Use the managed device. Take the corporately approved laptop or phone with current operating-system patches, endpoint protection, disk encryption, and the company’s configuration. Do not copy work data to an unmanaged personal computer.
  3. Verify the VPN client. Update it through the organization’s approved channel, sign in with your corporate identity, and confirm the expected gateway or profile. Do not install a different VPN to work around a policy.
  4. Test MFA abroad. Confirm that your authenticator, hardware token, or approved phone method works without relying on a mobile number or app that will be unavailable overseas. Ask for the documented recovery process; do not create an improvised bypass.
  5. Test the actual services. While still at home, open the applications you will need, including any internal sites, file stores, and secure webmail. Check that the device passes posture checks and that you can sign out and reconnect.
  6. Minimize stored data. Follow your employer’s travel-device rules. Remove unnecessary local copies, use approved encrypted storage, and avoid downloading sensitive records merely for convenience.
  7. Record support details. Save the security or help-desk contact, incident-reporting channel, and an emergency procedure that does not depend on the VPN being available.

Can I use a public Wi-Fi network with the company VPN?

Only if your employer’s policy permits it and the connection is necessary. A VPN reduces network exposure, but it does not make a public place private, prevent someone from viewing your screen, or remove the risk of a malicious hotspot and device theft.

Prefer a controlled connection

Use a corporate mobile hotspot or another employer-approved connection where feasible. If local Wi-Fi is unavoidable, verify the network name with the venue, disable automatic joining, keep the operating system and security software active, and connect the company VPN before opening work applications. Never accept a certificate warning or an unexpected MFA prompt just to get online.

Choose a private workspace

Work in a private room or controlled office. The Canadian guidance recommends private spaces and limits work in unsecured places to low-sensitivity tasks. UK government travel-security advice warns against exposing classified screens to people in public spaces. Position the screen away from doors and windows, lock the device whenever you step away, and use a physical privacy filter if your employer permits one. A filter helps with visual privacy; it does not provide network access or replace the approved VPN and device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the destination or type of data change the answer?

Yes. Travel risk depends on the traveler, the event, the destination, and the information handled. Before approval, your organization should assess local law, sanctions, export controls, contractual restrictions, and the sensitivity of the data. A destination that is acceptable for reading general announcements may be prohibited for handling source code, personal information, classified material, or controlled technology.

Ask whether split tunneling is enabled

Split tunneling sends some traffic directly to the local internet while other traffic uses the corporate tunnel. Australian security guidance warns that this can create additional risk because traffic outside the tunnel may not receive the organization’s inspection and protection. Do not change this setting yourself; the IT or security team must decide whether the organization’s configuration is appropriate for the trip.

Do not confuse network location with legal location

Routing traffic through a home-country gateway may make an application see a familiar corporate address, but you are still physically working in the country where you are present. A VPN cannot conceal the fact of travel from your employer’s records, satisfy a visa condition, or remove local obligations. If a service blocks the destination, treat that as a policy or security signal and ask IT for an approved alternative.

What is the UK GDPR position when an employee accesses systems from abroad?

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office explains that an employee’s access to the same legal entity’s systems while abroad is not automatically a restricted transfer under the UK GDPR. Its analysis asks whether the UK GDPR applies, whether the organization initiates access to an overseas organization, and whether the recipient is a separate legal entity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the ICO’s example, an employee uses a work device to access UK systems while on holiday abroad; access within the same entity is not treated as a restricted transfer. That is a specific UK GDPR analysis, not a blanket statement that overseas access has no legal, security, employment, or policy consequences. Other jurisdictions’ privacy laws, customer contracts, and internal rules may produce a different result, so your privacy or compliance team must assess the actual arrangement.

How do company VPNs, personal VPNs, and direct access differ?

Employees generally do not choose among interchangeable VPN products. The organization determines the approved service and configuration. These distinctions explain why a personal VPN is not a fix for a blocked work connection.

Access approach Who controls it Typical security and policy characteristics Appropriate use while abroad
Employer-provided VPN Your organization’s IT and security teams Integrated with managed devices, MFA, access rules, logging, and application controls Use only after destination and work activity are approved
Consumer or personal VPN You or a third-party provider May change apparent network location, but is not tied to your employer’s device checks, identity controls, or data-routing policy Not a substitute for the corporate method and not a reason to bypass a block
Direct internet access Local network and the individual service May lack corporate routing, inspection, or internal-application access Only for services and tasks your employer explicitly permits without the corporate tunnel

When an organization evaluates remote-access designs, relevant questions include whether the device is managed, MFA and encryption are enforced, which traffic is routed through corporate systems, what the destination and data sensitivity are, and whether the organization can monitor or restrict access.

What should I do if the VPN or a work service is blocked abroad?

Do not keep changing settings or try alternate tunnels. A block may be intentional, caused by destination policy, an account restriction, a device-compliance failure, or a local network problem.

  1. Check that the device has internet access and that the date and time are correct.
  2. Reconnect using the exact corporate VPN profile and MFA method supplied by IT.
  3. Read the error message and record the time, destination, network type, and application affected. Do not include sensitive data in an unsecured support ticket.
  4. Contact the organization’s help desk or travel-security contact through the approved channel. Ask whether the country, account, device, or application is restricted.
  5. Stop work on sensitive systems until IT confirms an approved route. Use an explicitly authorized low-sensitivity alternative only if your employer provides one.

Never disable endpoint protection, install unapproved software, share credentials, accept an unexpected MFA request, or ask someone else to relay restricted data. Those actions can turn an access problem into a security incident.

What if my device is lost, stolen, or inspected?

Report the incident immediately through the employer’s travel or security procedure, even if the device is powered off. Follow the organization’s instructions for remote lock or wipe, credential revocation, token replacement, and preservation of evidence. Do not wait until you return home or attempt to investigate a suspected compromise yourself.

Before travel, know what information the device stores locally, keep it physically with you when possible, and shut it down rather than leaving it unattended and unlocked. If officials or a venue request access, follow your employer’s legal and security guidance; do not make promises about what data you may disclose.

Can a VPN make international remote work safe enough on its own?

No. A VPN is one control in a larger decision involving authorization, a managed device, MFA, encryption, destination assessment, data minimization, a private workspace, and an incident-response plan. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security cautions that long-term teleworking outside Canada can put an organization at risk, which is why employers may impose stricter rules for extended stays than for a short business trip.

Use the following go/no-go test before connecting:

  • Approval: HR and IT/security have confirmed the destination, dates, tasks, and services.
  • Equipment: You have the approved managed device, VPN profile, MFA method, and required updates.
  • Data: The work does not violate local-law, sanctions, export-control, contractual, or classification restrictions.
  • Environment: You can work privately and use an approved connection.
  • Support: You know how to report access failures, suspicious activity, loss, or theft.

If any item is missing, pause and obtain an answer from the organization rather than attempting to hide the location or force access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work remotely from another country if my VPN connects successfully?

Not necessarily. A successful tunnel proves only that the technical connection was accepted; it does not show that your employer approved the destination, that the work is lawful there, or that the data may leave its permitted jurisdiction. Keep the written approval and follow any country- or application-specific limits.

Will my employer know that I am using the VPN from abroad?

Possibly. Corporate systems may record sign-in location, device status, gateway, and application activity, and unusual travel can trigger security checks. Do not assume that routing through a corporate gateway makes your physical location invisible.

Can I use hotel Wi-Fi if I turn on MFA and the company VPN?

MFA and the VPN improve protection but do not remove risks from a hostile network, shoulder surfing, or theft. Use an employer-approved hotspot when feasible, keep work in a private space, and limit hotel-network activity to what your policy allows.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a VPN solve visa, tax, or immigration restrictions on working abroad?

No. Network routing has no effect on immigration permission, tax residence, employment registration, or local labor rules. Ask your employer’s HR, legal, or mobility team about those obligations before performing work in the destination.

What should I do if the country is missing from the VPN’s server list?

Do not select a different country to disguise where you are or install another VPN. The missing destination may reflect an intentional security or compliance restriction; provide IT with your travel details and request an approved method or a decision not to work while there.
