What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No—not on a standard Raspberry Pi board. Its RAM is fixed to the board configuration, and there is no user-accessible slot for adding a DIMM or laptop memory stick. To get more RAM, replace the board with a higher-memory configuration. Embedded projects can choose a Compute Module SKU with more RAM, but that means selecting a compatible module and carrier—not installing extra RAM afterward.
Why you cannot add RAM to a standard Raspberry Pi
Standard Raspberry Pi boards are sold with a set amount of memory. They do not have a socket for DDR3, DDR4, or another conventional PC memory module, so buying a RAM stick will not upgrade one. The practical route is to replace the board with a higher-memory version that suits your project.
Capacity depends on the exact model. Raspberry Pi’s computer hardware documentation lists Raspberry Pi 4 Model B configurations from 1GB to 8GB and Raspberry Pi 5 configurations from 1GB to 16GB. Other Raspberry Pi models have their own configurations; do not assume every model offers the same maximum.
Which Raspberry Pi models have more memory?
These are the configurations relevant to choosing a replacement or complete device, as listed in Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation:

| Device | Listed RAM configurations | What it means for upgrading |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, or 8GB | Choose a higher-memory board; RAM is not added to an existing board. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB | Choose the desired configuration when buying a replacement board. |
| Raspberry Pi 400 | 4GB | A complete keyboard computer, not a board with a RAM socket. |
| Raspberry Pi 500 | 8GB | A complete keyboard computer, not a board with a RAM socket. |
| Raspberry Pi 500+ | 16GB | A complete keyboard computer, not a board with a RAM socket. |
These figures describe the configurations in Raspberry Pi’s official hardware table; they are not workload-performance results. More RAM can help when a workload needs more memory, but the specifications alone do not establish how much faster a particular application will run.
What about Raspberry Pi Compute Modules?
Compute Modules are system-on-module products intended for embedded and industrial designs. They offer a different purchasing choice: select a module with the required memory and fit it to compatible carrier hardware. They are not a way to add RAM to an ordinary Pi board.

| Compute Module | RAM configurations | Physical connection or form factor |
|---|---|---|
| CM4 | 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB | Two 100-pin connectors |
| CM4S | 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB | DDR2 SODIMM physical form factor |
| CM5 | 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB | Two 100-pin high-density connectors |
Raspberry Pi’s Compute Module documentation lists these families and configurations. The company announced the 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB CM4S variants in April 2024, expanding the original 1GB option; the announcement positioned CM4S for industrial customers migrating from earlier Compute Modules. See Raspberry Pi’s announcement for that dated change.
A SODIMM-shaped Compute Module is not laptop RAM
CM4S uses the physical shape of a DDR2 SODIMM, but Raspberry Pi says it is not electrically compatible with DDR2 SODIMM specifications. The resemblance is not an invitation to substitute a laptop memory stick. Check the official hardware documentation before choosing hardware for a SODIMM-form-factor design.

CM5 is not a drop-in upgrade for every CM4 design
Raspberry Pi describes CM5 as pin-compatible with CM4 for most customers, but recommends a project-specific migration review. CM5 extends the available capacity to 16GB, compared with CM4’s 8GB maximum, and not every SDRAM and eMMC combination is available. Review the CM4-to-CM5 transition paper alongside your carrier and project requirements.
For new designs that need the SODIMM form factor, Raspberry Pi recommends CM4S; for other new designs, it recommends CM4 or CM5. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation records CM3 and CM3 Lite as reaching end of life on 16 October 2025. Check the lifecycle guidance when planning a design around older modules.

Can software settings or storage increase RAM?
The total_mem setting can limit memory, not add it
Raspberry Pi’s config.txt memory options describe total_mem as a setting that can force a Raspberry Pi to use a specified amount of RAM in megabytes. The setting is clamped to the memory installed on the board. It can reduce the amount available to the operating system, but cannot make the board use more than it has.
MicroSD and eMMC are storage, not RAM
A microSD card or eMMC stores the operating system and files; it does not replace physical RAM. Some Compute Module configurations include eMMC storage in addition to their RAM variant. Compare memory and storage as separate specifications in the Compute Module documentation.

What to check before buying a higher-memory replacement
- Identify your exact Pi model and installed RAM. Check the board’s model and configuration, then use Raspberry Pi’s hardware table to compare available capacities for that model family.
- Confirm the workload actually needs more memory. Choose capacity for the applications you intend to run; a higher RAM specification by itself is not a guarantee of a particular performance gain.
- Check physical and electrical compatibility. A replacement board may not fit the existing case or work with the same power supply, accessories, and peripherals. A Compute Module also requires a compatible carrier board and the correct module connectors.
- Compare the complete configuration. For Compute Modules, verify the exact RAM and eMMC variant, wireless option, and carrier compatibility. For a standard Pi, account for any case, power, or accessory changes needed when replacing the board.
- Review software and project changes. A newer board or module can differ in processor generation, ports, power needs, and integration. For CM4-to-CM5 projects, use Raspberry Pi’s migration guidance rather than treating pin compatibility as a guarantee that no redesign is needed.
Bottom line for a standard Pi owner
If you need more memory on a regular Raspberry Pi, replace the whole board with a higher-RAM configuration—for example, a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB if it fits your project. You cannot upgrade the existing board with a separate DDR3, DDR4, or other RAM stick. For embedded hardware, choose a compatible Compute Module SKU at design or replacement time.
