No—not in the way you upgrade system RAM or a graphics card’s socketed memory. In current AI accelerators, High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is assembled in the same advanced package as the compute die. The capacity, memory generation and bandwidth are designed into the accelerator’s silicon, package, power delivery and cooling system. An owner normally cannot add HBM DIMMs, replace a stack, or convert HBM2e into HBM3E or HBM4. If a workload exceeds the installed memory, the practical solution is a different accelerator card or a complete server platform qualified for the required capacity and bandwidth.
What is HBM, and why is it fixed in an AI accelerator?
HBM is a package-level memory technology rather than a field-installed module. Multiple DRAM dies are stacked vertically and connected with through-silicon vias and microbumps. The stack sits beside the CPU or GPU on an interposer, or an equivalent advanced package, creating a very wide, short connection to the compute die.
Micron describes HBM as being “integrated directly into a system-in-package (SiP) alongside the CPU or GPU via a silicon interposer.” That physical arrangement is what delivers high bandwidth at relatively short signal distances, but it also means the memory is assembled before the accelerator leaves the factory. The package must be designed around the number of stacks, their electrical signaling, heat flow and mechanical clearances.

Capacity is therefore a property of the complete accelerator SKU. Its memory controllers and physical-layer interfaces (PHYs) are laid out for a specific number and type of HBM stacks. The package substrate or interposer, voltage regulators, firmware, board traces and cooling solution are validated together. There is no empty socket comparable to a DIMM slot.

AMD makes the same design point in its CDNA description: advanced packaging unifies its chiplet technologies and HBM. CDNA configurations can reach up to 256 GB of HBM3, but that figure belongs to particular accelerator designs; it is not an invitation to add stacks to a lower-capacity model.
Can you add more HBM to an H100, MI300 or similar accelerator?
For a normal owner, no. An H100, MI300-class device or comparable accelerator must be replaced with a SKU that was manufactured with more HBM. Installing system memory, a PCIe expansion card, an SSD or a generic “VRAM kit” does not increase the on-package HBM visible to kernels running on the accelerator.
Even two boards with the same compute architecture may have different HBM capacities, form factors and power limits. Those are separate products with different validation and server requirements. A board with 80 GB is not an expandable 80 GB base model; it is a package and board configuration built to provide that amount.

HBM stacks are not retail memory modules. Attaching one requires package assembly equipment, precision alignment, thermal materials, signal-integrity verification and firmware that understands the resulting topology. The interposer or package substrate must also have the required routing and power connections. A loose stack cannot be plugged into an installed accelerator.

NVIDIA’s NVHBM description illustrates the qualification burden: its custom HBM base-die technology is designed and validated with memory vendors for particular XPU packages. Signal integrity, thermal behavior and firmware support are settled during product development, not after a card is deployed.
Are HBM2e, HBM3E and HBM4 interchangeable?
No. A newer HBM generation is not a universal drop-in replacement. HBM3E and future HBM4 devices require compatible memory controllers, PHYs, package routing, power delivery, thermal design and firmware. The accelerator manufacturer must validate the complete combination before shipping it.
Micron lists HBM3E examples of 24 GB eight-high and 36 GB 12-high cubes, with bandwidth above 1.2 TB/s, and identifies those packages in specific accelerator products. Samsung lists HBM3E speeds of up to 9.2 Gb/s per pin and up to 1,180 GB/s per stack, with 24 GB and 36 GB stack options. These are package components qualified for named designs, not consumer upgrade choices.

A card designed for HBM2e generally lacks the electrical and physical provisions needed for a later generation. Even if a replacement stack could be attached, the controller might not train it, the package might not dissipate the heat, and the board firmware might reject the configuration. Treat claims of an HBM-generation swap as a request for exact manufacturer documentation, not as a routine repair.

What does buying more HBM actually involve?
The normal route is to buy an HBM-equipped accelerator card or an AI accelerator server with the required memory configuration. The replacement may be a different PCIe card, an SXM module, an OAM module or a proprietary board, and each form factor imposes different host, power and cooling requirements.

The capacities above come from Dell’s current PowerEdge accelerator options table and AMD’s Alveo V80 installation guide. Dell’s table distinguishes PCIe, SXM and OAM products and shows board power levels ranging from roughly 300 W to 600 W or more across the listed options. A higher-capacity replacement can therefore require a different chassis, airflow arrangement, power supply, host interconnect or service contract.
How should you compare a replacement accelerator?
Capacity alone is an unsafe buying criterion. A model with more HBM can still be unusable if the server cannot provide its power, cooling or interconnect, or if your software stack does not support it.

What is a safe step-by-step process for an HBM upgrade?
- Measure the actual shortfall. Record peak allocated HBM during the workload, model size, batch size and whether the failure is an out-of-memory error or a bandwidth bottleneck. A workload that runs out of capacity needs a different remedy from one that merely needs more throughput.
- Check the installed product’s exact SKU. Record the board name, memory generation, capacity, form factor and host interface from the manufacturer’s documentation or server service record. Do not rely on a family name alone; one family can contain several memory configurations.
- Define a minimum target. Specify usable HBM capacity, required sustained bandwidth, acceptable power draw and the number of accelerators. Include headroom for larger models, longer sequences or future software versions.
- Verify the server mechanically and electrically. Confirm slot type, board length, auxiliary power, rack power, airflow or liquid-cooling support, and the server vendor’s qualified-options list. Dell’s tables demonstrate why PCIe, SXM and OAM entries cannot be treated as interchangeable cards.
- Validate interconnect and software. Check host CPU and PCIe compatibility, accelerator-to-accelerator links, driver and runtime versions, framework support and any licensing or firmware requirements. A card that fits physically may still be unsupported by the platform.
- Price the complete change. Include the accelerator or server, power and cooling modifications, installation, warranty implications and downtime. Compare that total with buying a prequalified server containing the desired accelerator.
- Run a representative acceptance test. Before deploying production jobs, test the largest model and expected batch, monitor HBM allocation and sustained bandwidth, and confirm thermal and power behavior under prolonged load.
Can a specialist rework a package to add HBM?
Package rework may exist for a particular board, but it is not a general upgrade path. Availability, manufacturing yield, warranty coverage and long-term reliability depend on the exact package and provider. Any legitimate proposal should identify the board revision, package, HBM generation and stack density, then explain how signal integrity, thermal performance, firmware and post-rework testing will be validated.

Without manufacturer authorization, such work can void the warranty and leave the accelerator unsupported by its server or software. A seller who offers a generic memory kit, replacement “HBM cubes” or a promise to convert HBM2e to HBM3E without naming those details should be treated skeptically.

Software changes can reduce the immediate requirement, but they do not add HBM. Lowering batch size, using lower-precision weights where your model tolerates it, checkpointing or partitioning a model across multiple accelerators can keep a job running. Offloading data to system memory may also be possible, but transfers across the host interface are slower and can change performance substantially.
These techniques are workload-specific. Measure peak HBM after each change and keep enough margin for temporary buffers, compilation and communication overhead. If the model still exceeds the device’s usable capacity, a higher-capacity accelerator or a platform with multiple coordinated devices is the durable solution.
Why can a larger HBM number still be the wrong purchase?
HBM capacity is only one part of application performance. A larger-memory module can have a different form factor, higher board power, stricter cooling requirements or a different interconnect that your existing server cannot support. Software maturity and availability may also differ between accelerator families.

For example, a 128 GB HBM2e accelerator and an 80 GB HBM2e PCIe card are not interchangeable choices simply because both expose HBM. Their host platforms, drivers, power envelopes and scaling behavior can differ. Choose the smallest qualified platform that meets your workload’s capacity and bandwidth target with practical headroom, rather than selecting by gigabytes alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will adding ordinary system RAM give my accelerator more HBM?
No. System RAM is separate from the accelerator’s on-package HBM and cannot increase the device memory reported to compute kernels. Some software can offload data to system memory, but the extra transfers usually require explicit support and can reduce performance.
Can two accelerators combine their HBM into one larger memory pool?
Only when the accelerator architecture, interconnect and software framework support a coordinated or partitioned memory model. Two cards do not automatically become one device with twice the addressable HBM, so confirm the exact framework and topology before assuming a model will fit.
How much HBM should I target for a future model upgrade?
Start with measured peak allocation for the largest planned model, then add room for temporary buffers, longer inputs and batch growth. Specify both capacity and sustained bandwidth; extra gigabytes are not useful if the platform cannot feed the compute cores or cool the board.
Does an HBM-equipped PCIe card work in any server with an open PCIe slot?
No. The slot must provide the required electrical link, auxiliary power, physical clearance, airflow and firmware support. Server qualification lists also distinguish PCIe cards from SXM, OAM and proprietary modules, so check the complete platform documentation.
