Yes. Controller vibration and haptics usually have a separate setting from game audio, so you can turn off or reduce controller feedback while keeping sound on your TV, console, or headset. Look for a control labeled “Vibration,” “Rumble,” or “Haptics”—not a volume or mute setting. The exact menu depends on your console, and on some platforms you may also need to change the setting inside the game.
Why doesn’t turning off vibration mute game audio?
Controller feedback and game sound are separate outputs. Vibration or haptics are physical effects produced by the controller; gameplay audio is sent to your TV, speakers, or headset. Changing a vibration setting should not change those audio levels.
Some controllers also have a small built-in speaker. Its volume is a separate setting from vibration and from the main game audio. On PS4 and PS5, for example, the controller settings list speaker volume separately from vibration controls. If you want to stop the controller itself from making sounds, adjust its speaker volume; do not mute the game or lower the TV or headset volume.

In practice, you can leave the sound setup you already use—TV speakers, a headset, or another audio output—unchanged. Find the controller-feedback control and change only that. If you accidentally change an audio slider, restore it separately; vibration and sound are not the same setting, even when both appear in a controller menu.
How do I turn off controller vibration on PlayStation?
PS4 provides a named on/off control. PS5 provides a vibration-intensity control; select its minimum value if your menu does not offer an explicit Off option.
PS4
- Open Settings > Devices > Controllers.
- Turn Enable Vibration off.
Sony says the controller will not vibrate with this setting off, even if vibration is enabled in a game. The same menu includes a separate Volume Control (Speaker for Controller) option. Leave it alone if you want to keep controller-speaker sound, or adjust it independently if that is the sound you want to change.

This is useful if a game’s own vibration option is hard to find: the PS4 system control is the broader setting, and Sony says it prevents vibration even when a game has it enabled. You do not need to change the TV, headset, or game-audio volume to use it.
PS5
- Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
- Find Vibration Intensity and choose the minimum available setting.
The PS5 setting is described as an intensity control, so an explicit Off choice may not appear in every menu version. Use the lowest available value rather than assuming the controller is muted. Volume (Speaker for Controller) is listed separately and controls the controller speaker, not game audio.
If the lowest setting still gives you feedback, check whether the game has its own vibration or haptics option. A per-game control may let you select Off even when the platform-level control is presented as intensity. If you only want less feedback rather than none, an intensity setting is the more appropriate control.
How do I turn off vibration on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2?
Both systems have a system setting for controller vibration. Turning it off applies to paired controllers rather than changing the game’s audio volume.

Nintendo Switch
- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors.
- Turn Controller Vibration off.
Nintendo says this setting applies to all paired controllers. Switch Lite has no built-in vibration feature; compatible wireless controllers can still vibrate when used with it.
Because the Switch setting applies to all paired controllers, it is not limited to the controller currently in your hands. If you are troubleshooting feedback from a paired controller, change the system setting and check the controller you are using. The setting is about vibration; it does not require you to reduce the game’s sound.
Nintendo Switch 2
- Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories.
- Turn Controller Vibration off.
Nintendo says the setting applies to all paired controllers. It does not require lowering the game’s sound or changing the console’s audio output.
On both Switch systems, be sure you are changing Controller Vibration, not an audio setting. If another paired controller is also affected, that is consistent with the setting applying across paired controllers rather than only to one device.

Xbox has a vibration setting, but the exact consumer menu path could not be confirmed from the accessible official instructions. Check the console’s current controller settings or the game’s own options for a vibration control; avoid following an unverified menu path, since labels and locations can change.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 110 says players should be able to “Turn off the feedback.” That is design guidance, not a step-by-step guide for the current Xbox interface. If you cannot find a console-wide control, check the game’s controller or accessibility menu and confirm the result in-game.
When checking, look for a setting named vibration, rumble, or feedback, and keep the audio controls unchanged. If the console-level control is not apparent, the game may still offer a separate option. Menu labels and locations can change, so use the settings shown on your console rather than relying on a path that may not match your software version.

What if I’m playing on PC, Mac, or mobile?
On computers and phones, haptic controls depend on the controller, operating system, connection, and game. There may not be one universal system-wide switch, and a setting in one game or controller utility may not affect another.

- Check the game first: Open its controller, gameplay, or accessibility options and look for vibration, rumble, or haptic feedback.
- Check controller software or platform settings: If the game has no control, look for a vibration option in the software or settings used to manage the connected controller.
- Check compatibility: An effect may be unavailable because the controller, operating system, connection, or game does not support it.
Sony says DualSense haptics work only in supported games, are unsupported on Mac and mobile, and may require a USB connection on Windows. A missing effect on those devices may therefore be a compatibility issue rather than an audio or volume problem.
This means a missing vibration option does not necessarily indicate that you have muted something or that the controller is broken. First establish whether the particular controller, game, operating system, and connection support haptics in that setup. For DualSense on Windows, try the connection condition Sony specifies—USB—if the game supports the feature. On Mac and mobile, Sony says DualSense haptics are unsupported.
Why does my controller still vibrate after I switch it off?
First check whether the control you changed is system-wide or belongs only to a game. A game may have its own vibration option, while a platform setting may apply across paired controllers or devices. Check both places when feedback continues.
Check the game’s own setting
Open the game’s controller or accessibility options and look for a separate vibration setting. For example, EA’s FC 26 accessibility resource lists User Vibration Feedback with an Off option, separately from trigger effects. A game-specific control may use different wording from the console setting.
That example also shows why it helps to read the option name closely: “User Vibration Feedback” and trigger effects are distinct controls. Turning one off may not disable another kind of physical feedback. If you still feel an effect after disabling vibration, inspect the game’s other feedback options instead of changing the audio settings.
Make sure you changed feedback, not sound
Look for “vibration,” “rumble,” or “haptics.” A volume slider, mute option, or controller-speaker control changes sound, not the physical feedback. Conversely, turning off vibration will not silence a controller speaker or mute game audio.

On PS4 and PS5, the menu lists controller-speaker volume separately from vibration, so it is possible to change one without changing the other. If you hear sound from a controller after vibration is off, that sound is a separate issue; if you still feel movement, revisit the vibration or haptics controls.
Consider support and connection
If you are using a computer or phone, confirm that the controller and game support the effect in your current connection setup. Compatibility varies; for DualSense on Windows, Sony says USB may be required for haptics. If there is no vibration option where expected, the feature may not be supported in that context.

Some controls apply across the system or paired controllers, while others belong to one game. On Switch and Switch 2, Nintendo says the system vibration setting applies to all paired controllers. On PS4, Sony says the system control prevents controller vibration even if a game enables it. A game-level option, by contrast, is specific to that game. Knowing which scope you changed helps narrow down why another game or paired controller behaves differently.
Which setting should I change: vibration, intensity, or trigger effects?
Choose the control that matches the sensation you want to stop. “Vibration” or “rumble” generally refers to controller feedback, while an intensity control lets you reduce its strength. Some games expose separate kinds of feedback, so disabling one may not disable another.
- Turn vibration off when you want no controller rumble or haptic feedback and the setting offers a true Off option.
- Lower vibration intensity when you want weaker feedback but still want some physical response, or when the platform offers only intensity levels.
- Check trigger effects separately if the shoulder triggers still resist or respond after vibration is off. A game may list trigger effects independently, as FC 26 does.
Do not assume every platform uses the word “haptics.” The system menu may call the feature vibration or rumble, and the game may offer a separate control with a different name.
It is also worth distinguishing a true Off setting from a minimum-intensity setting. PS4 has the named Enable Vibration switch. PS5 is described as having Vibration Intensity, so use the minimum value available if the menu does not show Off. An intensity reduction is not necessarily the same promise as disabling the feature entirely.
A quick way to troubleshoot without changing audio
- Identify where you are playing. The steps and names differ among PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, PC, Mac, and mobile.
- Find the feedback control. Search controller, accessories, or accessibility settings for vibration, rumble, haptics, or a platform-specific label.
- Choose off or the minimum intensity. Use a clear Off option when available; where only intensity is described, select its lowest available value.
- Check the game separately. If the effect continues or you want a game-specific adjustment, inspect the game’s controller or accessibility options.
- Keep audio controls as they are. Do not adjust master volume, mute, TV/headset output, or controller-speaker volume unless you intend to change that sound.
- Verify compatibility if the effect is absent. On PC or mobile, support may depend on the device, operating system, connection, and game.
This sequence separates the main possibilities: an incorrectly chosen audio control, a game-level setting, a system-level setting, or a compatibility limitation. It avoids the common but unnecessary workaround of muting sound just to stop controller feedback.
