Yes—if the iPod still works, you can use it to play music today. The practical question is which model you have: iPod classic, nano, and shuffle rely on computer syncing to add music, while iPod touch has its own computer-sync workflow and, depending on its generation and software, may support more features. Apple ended the iPod line in 2022, so buyers are looking at used devices, and neither current app support nor every music file’s compatibility is guaranteed across generations.

What can you still do with an iPod?

An iPod can still play music that is compatible with it, but it is not one uniform device category. Classic, nano, and shuffle are dedicated players: Apple says you add content by syncing with iTunes. iPod touch is an iOS device, and Apple documents syncing songs, albums, and playlists from a computer. Its possible app and online-service uses depend on the exact generation and software.

That distinction matters more than the iPod name. A classic, nano, or shuffle should be approached as a player for a computer-managed music library, not as a device for streaming a subscription catalog. An iPod touch may offer additional capabilities, but the Apple support material describes how to sync it rather than guaranteeing current access to every app or service.

At a glance: model family and music workflow

iPod family Documented way to add music What to verify
iPod classic Sync a computer library using iTunes. Exact model, storage and file compatibility; condition, battery and connector.
iPod nano Sync a computer library using iTunes. Exact model, condition, battery and connector. Do not assume it supports streaming apps.
iPod shuffle Sync a computer library using iTunes. Exact model and working controls, battery and connector.
iPod touch Sync selected songs, albums or playlists from a Mac or Windows PC; Apple also documents Wi-Fi syncing after initial computer setup. Generation, software version, computer workflow and whether a specific app or service still supports it.

Apple’s documentation does not provide a single current compatibility chart covering every generation, codec, DRM rule, app or streaming service. Before relying on an iPod for a particular album or service, identify the model and check the relevant model documentation and current service requirements.

How do you put music on an old iPod?

For classic, nano and shuffle, use a computer library and iTunes. For iPod touch, Apple documents syncing music from a Mac or PC, with the Mac app depending on the macOS version.

Classic, nano and shuffle

  1. Identify the iPod family and generation. Check the device itself or its original packaging if available; do not choose a cable or instructions based only on the word “iPod.”
  2. On Windows, install or open iTunes. Apple’s specific instructions for syncing classic, nano and shuffle identify Windows 10 or later. Apple’s current general Windows guidance also lists iTunes or Apple Devices, but the legacy-player instructions specifically name iTunes. If the device is not recognized, consult the device-specific guidance and check which supported app is installed.
  3. Connect the iPod to the computer with a cable that matches its connector. Confirm the computer recognizes the device before changing the music library or buying parts.
  4. In iTunes, select the device and choose the music, albums or playlists from the library to sync. Apple’s guide describes syncing content between a computer and a device; the exact screen layout may differ by iTunes version.
  5. Let the sync finish before disconnecting. Then check the iPod itself to confirm the selected music appears and plays.

Apple’s Windows guide for iTunes syncing is at Intro to syncing in iTunes on PC. Its general computer-sync guidance is at Sync your iPhone, iPad or iPod with your computer.

iPod touch with a Mac

  1. On macOS 10.15 or later, connect the iPod touch and use Finder to manage syncing.
  2. On an earlier macOS release, Apple says to use iTunes instead.
  3. Choose the music items to sync, such as songs, albums or playlists, and allow the transfer to complete.

Apple describes the touch workflow in Sync iPod touch with your computer. For an iPod touch that is not recognized, use the device-specific instructions and check the installed app and operating-system versions rather than assuming one workflow applies to all Macs.

iPod touch with Windows or Wi-Fi syncing

Apple’s device guide describes syncing iPod touch with iTunes on Windows, while Apple’s general Windows guidance lists iTunes or Apple Devices. If the device does not appear, check the device-specific directions and whether the relevant app is installed and current enough for the computer. Apple also documents Wi-Fi syncing for iPod touch once it has been configured through a computer connection. This is not evidence that classic, nano or shuffle can use the same wireless method; their cited legacy instructions describe computer syncing.

Can an iPod play Apple Music or other subscription downloads?

Do not assume that downloaded subscription tracks can be copied to an iPod like ordinary music files. Apple says saved Apple Music songs cannot be synced to a device, and Apple Music subscribers cannot use iTunes to sync music to iPod touch.

A subscription download is an offline copy for use within the service, not necessarily an unprotected file that can be transferred through a computer library. Keep that distinction clear when planning a music collection: use music that is available in a computer library and compatible with the specific iPod, and do not buy a device on the assumption that it will accept saved subscription tracks.

Apple describes Apple Music and iCloud as ways to access content across devices, but also notes that using those services may make computer-sync options unavailable. The details can depend on the device and setup, so check Apple’s current instructions before switching how a library is managed. The documentation does not establish that every purchase, ripped track or other file format works on every iPod generation.

Will an old iPod work with your computer?

Often it can, but the correct software depends on both the iPod family and the computer’s operating system. Use the specific model workflow rather than treating all iPods as interchangeable.

Computer Apple-documented approach Scope
Windows 10 or later with classic, nano or shuffle iTunes Apple’s specific legacy-player instructions name iTunes for adding content.
Windows with iPod touch Apple’s device guide describes iTunes; its general Windows guidance lists iTunes or Apple Devices. Follow the device-specific instructions if the iPod is not recognized.
Mac with macOS 10.15 or later and iPod touch Finder Apple documents Finder syncing for this Mac software generation and later.
Earlier Mac with iPod touch iTunes Apple says earlier macOS versions use iTunes for the computer-sync workflow.

These software directions are not a promise that every old player will be recognized by every present-day computer configuration, nor that all current Windows and Mac releases support every model identically. If a device fails to appear, confirm its exact family, use the appropriate Apple device guide, verify the cable and connection, and check the installed syncing app. The Apple guide for touch is here; Apple’s general sync guidance is here.

What are the main limitations of using an iPod now?

The most important limitations are music-source restrictions, aging hardware and uncertain support for modern software. Which one matters most depends on the model and how you intend to listen.

  • Subscription music is not the same as transferable music. Apple says saved Apple Music tracks cannot be synced to a device. A plan that depends on copying offline subscription downloads to an iPod is not supported by that guidance.
  • Streaming is not a safe assumption. Classic, nano and shuffle use a computer-sync workflow in Apple’s instructions. For touch, availability depends on generation, installed software, region and the service; the cited Apple material does not establish a definitive current app-availability matrix.
  • File compatibility is model-specific. Apple’s sync instructions explain how to move items in a library, but do not supply a complete current codec and DRM compatibility matrix for all generations. Verify an exact model and file type before relying on a collection.
  • Hardware condition varies. A used player’s battery may no longer hold useful charge, and screens, buttons or connectors may be damaged. The Associated Press’s April 8, 2026 guide discusses secondhand condition and battery issues; the individual device still needs inspection.
  • Connector choice is generation-dependent. The same AP guide notes Lightning on later iPod touch models and 30-pin connectors on other variants. Check the actual device before buying a sync or charging cable.
  • Repair certainty is limited. The cited sources do not establish repair eligibility, exact compatible battery parts or current service availability. A replacement part must match the precise model; a generic battery recommendation would be unsafe.

Is a used iPod worth buying?

It can make sense if the specific device is in working condition and its music workflow matches your needs. It is a poor choice if you need guaranteed access to a particular streaming app, an unverified file format or subscription downloads.

Check before paying

  • Confirm the exact model and generation rather than relying on the seller’s broad “iPod” label.
  • Ask whether the battery charges and holds charge, and test the screen, buttons, headphone output and charging/sync connection if possible.
  • Check the storage capacity and whether it is enough for the computer-library music you plan to load.
  • Identify the connector before ordering a cable. Later touch models may use Lightning, while other variants use 30-pin.
  • Confirm that the intended computer and sync app can work with that model, and test the setup before depending on it.
  • Ask for a return option or a way to test the unit. A device that powers on is not necessarily a device with a healthy battery or reliable controls.
  • If the purpose is streaming, verify the exact service against the iPod touch generation and software; do not infer support from the iPod touch name alone.

Apple announced on May 11, 2022 that “iPod touch will be available while supplies last,” ending new-product availability through that announcement. The iPod line is discontinued, so a present-day purchase is generally a used-device decision rather than a choice among current Apple iPod models. The announcement is available at Apple Newsroom.

How has the iPod line changed?

The iPod touch was introduced on September 5, 2007. Apple introduced its seventh-generation touch on May 28, 2019, with an A10 Fusion chip and up to 256 GB of storage. Those are historical specifications for that model, not evidence that it is currently sold new or that every current app remains compatible.

Apple’s 2022 announcement marked the end of the product line, but the players already in circulation do not stop working solely because production ended. Their useful life depends on physical condition and the practical compatibility of the music, computer and software you want to use. Apple’s announcement also quoted senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak reflecting on the iPod’s past impact; that historical praise does not establish present-day compatibility or support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an iPod without an internet connection?

A classic, nano or shuffle can play compatible music already stored on it; adding tracks is a computer-sync task, not a streaming requirement. A touch may have online features, but this depends on its generation, software and the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use an iPod as an external drive to move music between computers?

The Apple syncing instructions establish moving media between a computer library and an iPod, not a general-purpose file-transfer workflow for every model. Check the manual for the exact generation before treating it as a storage device.

Does Apple still sell or service iPods?

Apple’s May 11, 2022 announcement said iPod touch would be available while supplies lasted, so it is not a current product line. The sources cited here do not establish current repair-service eligibility; ask Apple or a qualified repair provider about the exact model and location.
