The drawing, by artist Etienne Suvasa, was won by a member of the free software community and is not established as currently available for purchase.
What is the GNU Head?
The GNU Head is Etienne Suvasa’s original drawing that became the blueprint for the familiar GNU logo. The Free Software Foundation (FSF) offered this unique piece of artwork as memorabilia; it was not a mass-market product. The FSF’s auction announcement explains the drawing’s connection to the logo.
Can you still bid on the original?
No. The FSF held its live memorabilia auction on March 23, 2025, as part of its 40th-anniversary activities. In a recap published the next day, the organization said the drawing had found a new home with a member of the free software community. It did not identify the buyer or report a resale. Read the FSF’s post-auction recap.
That confirms the original was auctioned and won, but does not establish its present owner, whether it might be resold, or whether reproductions are available. There is no confirmed current purchase option for this specific drawing.

These were distinct historical items, not alternative listings for the GNU Head. The FSF’s announcement lists all six artifacts. After the event, FSF executive director Zoë Kooyman said, “We are pleased that the GNU Head, the katana, and the Internet Hall of Fame medal have found a new home in the free software community.”
