Yes. Community users have reported running pfSense on the Dell Wyse 5070 Extended, including builds with multiport network cards. That establishes that the setup is feasible, not that Dell or Netgate certifies the thin client or that every configuration will work. Check the exact network adapter, its fit, BIOS settings, and the FreeBSD hardware support for your pfSense release before building.
What the Wyse 5070 Extended offers for networking
Dell’s communication specifications list one onboard 10/100/1000 Mb/s RJ45 adapter and an optional second adapter. The optional adapter may be 10/100/1000 Mb/s RJ45 or 100/1000 SFP, so confirm which configuration your particular unit has.
Dell also notes that the WiFi option must be enabled in BIOS to use the expansion slot for SFP. Check the machine’s BIOS and the card’s connector type before planning a build around that option.
Which NIC setup can you use?
| Approach | What is established | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Onboard Ethernet plus optional second adapter | Dell documents onboard Gigabit Ethernet and optional RJ45 or SFP networking. | Confirm the installed adapter and, for SFP use, the BIOS setting Dell specifies. |
| Multiport add-in NIC | A community user reported installing a quad-port HP NC364T; another described using an add-in four-port card alongside onboard Ethernet. | Verify the exact card’s FreeBSD driver support, physical fit, connector type, and hardware VLAN support if you need VLANs. |
Netgate’s pfSense hardware guidance recommends Intel NICs for their FreeBSD driver support and performance, while cautioning that implementations can vary. Choose by the exact card and chipset rather than brand alone. Netgate advises against USB network adapters because of reliability and performance concerns.

Check pfSense and FreeBSD compatibility
Netgate says current pfSense versions support amd64/x86-64 hardware and are compatible with most hardware supported by FreeBSD. For a home-built system, consult the FreeBSD Hardware Notes for the FreeBSD version used by the pfSense release you plan to install. Release and underlying FreeBSD-version details can change, so use the current documentation rather than assuming that a note for another release applies.
What users have reported—and what those reports do not prove
In a 2019 r/PFSENSE thread, one user described installing pfSense on the Extended model with a quad-port HP NC364T PCI NIC. They removed an AMD graphics card to make room for the NIC and enabled USB boot in BIOS. After the card transmitted but did not receive, the user disabled onboard networking and speculated that the onboard Realtek and add-in Intel NIC might be involved. That was the user’s theory, not a confirmed cause.

Another participant in the same thread described using onboard Ethernet for WAN alongside several ports on a four-port add-in NIC, and reported approximately 940 Mbps in their own tests. The differing configurations mean that disabling onboard Ethernet is not a universal requirement; if a problem occurs, troubleshoot the card, BIOS, drivers, and interface configuration in your own build.
The thread also includes a user’s report of 350 Mbps download alongside a 400 Mbps routed inter-VLAN transfer, with about 18% CPU use. These figures are individual observations, not controlled benchmarks or guaranteed throughput. Traffic mix, enabled services, card, and configuration can all affect results.

Build checklist
- Identify the unit and its expansion hardware. Make sure it is the Extended model and establish whether the optional network adapter is RJ45 or SFP.
- Check physical fit. Confirm the chosen multiport card fits the available expansion space and that any hardware occupying it can be removed if necessary.
- Verify adapter support. Check the exact NIC and the FreeBSD Hardware Notes corresponding to your planned pfSense release; prefer a well-supported wired adapter.
- Configure BIOS deliberately. Set the needed boot option. If using SFP in the expansion slot, enable the WiFi option in BIOS as Dell specifies.
- Test interfaces individually. Confirm each port can send and receive traffic, then validate WAN, LAN, VLANs, and any routed workloads you intend to use.
