Usually, you can’t restore an iPhone backup made on a newer iOS beta to an iPhone running an earlier iOS version. Apple warns that beta backups may not work with earlier iOS releases. If the phone can update to the version the backup requires, update it first; if you’re removing beta software to return to public iOS, you’ll need an older backup made before installing the beta.
First, identify which version change you’re making
“The backup needs newer software” and “I want to downgrade from beta” are different situations. Apple’s instructions depend on whether the iPhone can be updated to meet the backup’s requirement or whether you’re trying to put an earlier public iOS version back on the device.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| The restore says the backup requires a newer iOS version, and the iPhone can update to it | Update iOS, then retry the restore. Follow the on-screen update flow for iCloud; Apple documents a separate sequence for a computer backup. |
| You’re removing a beta to return to public iOS | Erase and restore the iPhone to install the current public release, then use an archived backup from an earlier iOS version if you have one. A beta-era backup may not work with the earlier release. |
Apple states that an iCloud backup might need a newer iOS version and advises updating the device before restoring: Apple Support: If you can’t restore from an iCloud backup. Its beta-removal guidance warns that backups made while using beta software won’t work with earlier iOS versions: Apple Support: How to uninstall iOS or iPadOS beta software.

For an iCloud backup
- Begin setting up the iPhone and choose to restore from an iCloud backup.
- If setup says the backup needs a newer iOS version, accept the offered update and let the iPhone install it.
- Continue setup and select the backup once the update is complete.
Apple’s process updates the device as part of the restore flow when needed; it does not make a beta backup compatible with an earlier iOS release.

For a computer backup
Apple’s documented sequence is to set up the iPhone without transferring data, update iOS, erase the phone, and then restore the computer backup:
- During iPhone setup, choose the option to set up without transferring apps and data.
- Finish setup, install the iOS update needed by the backup, and wait for the update to complete.
- Erase the iPhone, then set it up again.
- Connect it to the computer and restore the backup using Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, as appropriate for that computer.
Follow Apple’s full steps for a restore that requires a newer software version: Apple Support: If you can’t restore from an iCloud backup.
If you’re removing the beta and returning to public iOS
Apple’s beta-removal procedure erases and restores the iPhone to install the current public iOS release. Before removing the beta, Apple advises having an older backup made with the current iOS version. After the device is back on public iOS, restore that pre-beta backup if it is available. Do not count on a backup created on the newer beta restoring onto the earlier public version.

Restore from a computer
Use a USB cable that connects the iPhone to the computer. A cable is necessary for this route, but it cannot resolve an iOS-version mismatch. Apple’s overview of computer backups and restores is How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer and open Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on a supported Windows setup, or iTunes where applicable.
- Select the iPhone, then choose Restore Backup.
- Pick the backup you want to use and start the restore.
- If prompted, enter the password for the encrypted backup.
Check that the cable fits the ports on both the iPhone and computer. Apple’s connection guidance is available at If your computer doesn’t recognize your iPhone or iPad.

If the message says the backup is corrupt or incompatible
A corruption or incompatibility message is not the same as a prompt to update iOS. Apple recommends updating the computer software and trying another available backup or an iCloud backup; it also cautions that the backup may not be usable. See Apple Support: If you can’t back up or restore your Mac or PC.
- Update macOS or the relevant Apple Devices or iTunes software, then try again.
- If another backup is available, select it instead.
- If you have an iCloud backup, try that route.
What a successful restore may not bring back
A restore returns the information included in that backup, but some data is stored or synchronized separately through iCloud. Apple advises checking whether missing information was included in iCloud Backup. For instance, files in iCloud Drive and data using separate iCloud syncing are not necessarily contents of the device backup. See What does iCloud back up?.
