Yes—if the damage is limited to the plug at the cable’s end, you can usually cut it off and install a compatible replacement. Replace the whole cable if the cable itself is cut, crushed, or exposed, if there is too little slack to re-terminate it, or if a correctly repaired end still fails a cable test.
Decide whether the damage is just the connector
Inspect the plug and the cable immediately behind it. A broken latch or damaged plug with an intact jacket and apparently sound conductors is a reasonable candidate for re-termination. If the cable jacket is cut or crushed, or copper is exposed, the fault may extend beyond the plug; replacing the cable is generally the practical choice.

What you need for an end repair
- A cutter/stripper and an RJ45 crimping or termination tool suited to the connector.
- A replacement plug compatible with the cable’s category, conductor construction (solid or stranded), and shielding. There is no single plug that fits every Ethernet cable; check the plug manufacturer’s compatibility information. Klein Tools’ Pass-Thru cable installation kit is one example of a tool kit intended for connecting and testing compatible connectors on category cable.
- An Ethernet cable tester that checks continuity or wire map. A basic tester can identify wiring problems, but it does not certify category-level bandwidth or installation performance.
How to replace an Ethernet plug
- Cut off the damaged connector. Leave enough undamaged cable to strip and terminate; if cutting back leaves too little slack, replace the cable instead.
- Strip the outer jacket carefully. Avoid nicking or cutting the insulated conductors inside.
- Arrange the wires in the correct pin order. Use either T568A or T568B, and preserve the same wiring scheme at both ends of the cable. iFixit’s RJ45 connector replacement guide demonstrates a T568B replacement.
- Keep the pairs twisted close to the plug. Intel’s Ethernet cabling guidance says: “When untwisting the wire pair for crimping, don’t untwist the wire more than 1/2 inch, or about 1½ turns.” Correct pair assignment and minimal untwisting help preserve the cable’s intended termination.
- Insert and crimp the compatible plug. Follow the connector and tool instructions so the conductors seat in the contacts and the cable jacket is held securely.
- Test the finished cable. Use a cable tester to check that conductors connect in the expected sequence. If it reports an open or mismatch, inspect the wire order and termination, then re-terminate if appropriate.
What a failed test can—and cannot—tell you
An open or wire-map mismatch after checking and re-terminating the end may indicate a damaged cable or another fault that needs diagnosis. A short can suggest exposed copper. The Control4 cable and termination guide distinguishes end-termination errors from faults that persist in the cable.
A basic continuity or wire-map test confirms whether conductors connect in the expected sequence; it does not prove that the cable meets its rated category performance. The available repair guidance does not provide a comparative test showing that a repaired cable performs identically to a new one, so use the tester result for wiring checks—not as certification of bandwidth or installation quality.

When replacing the whole cable makes more sense
- The damage is in the cable body, not just at the plug.
- Cutting back the damaged connector would leave too little length to terminate safely.
- You cannot get a replacement plug matched to the cable construction or do not have a suitable crimping and testing setup.
- The cable still fails after a careful, correct re-termination.
For a short patch cable that is easy to replace, a new cable may be simpler than finding compatible parts and repairing the old one. That is a practical convenience, not a rule that every damaged Ethernet lead must be discarded.
