Usually, yes—if you still know your account PIN or can use a supported device authentication method. Open Projects > Locked chats to find the conversation and authenticate. Opening it gives you temporary access; you can permanently unlock it to return it to regular history. If you forgot the PIN, the documented reset process permanently deletes all locked chats and content protected only by the old PIN. OpenAI says Support cannot recover that deleted content.
What does “locked” mean in ChatGPT?
A locked chat is saved to your account but kept out of regular chat history and ordinary search. It is not the same as a deleted conversation: you can access it from Projects > Locked chats by authenticating with the account PIN or a supported device-authentication method.
The distinction matters when a conversation seems to have disappeared. Searching the regular chat list will not find a locked conversation, so a missing result there does not show that the chat was deleted. OpenAI’s current Help Center guidance describes locking as a way to protect a conversation and its associated content; it does not describe a separate recovery service that can bypass its PIN.
How do I open and recover a locked chat if I know the PIN?
If you know the PIN, you can open the chat without deleting it. To put the conversation back in ordinary history, use the chat’s unlock option after opening it.

- In ChatGPT, open Projects and select Locked chats.
- Enter your account PIN, or use Face ID, Touch ID, or device-unlock authentication if that option is supported and available on your device.
- Select the conversation you want to view. Opening it provides access but does not permanently unlock it.
- To return it to regular history, open the conversation’s more-options menu and choose Unlock chat. On iOS, the option may appear as Unlock.
- Confirm the action when prompted.
Temporary access ends differently by platform: OpenAI’s guidance says web access ends when you refresh the page or close the tab, while mobile access ends automatically after the documented inactivity period. If you only need to read the chat, opening it is different from choosing Unlock chat; the latter changes its status so it returns to regular history.
What if I forgot my ChatGPT locked-chat PIN?
The official recovery path for a forgotten PIN is to reset it, but that reset is destructive. OpenAI says it permanently deletes all locked chats and content protected only by the previous PIN, and that neither the deletion nor the content can be recovered by Support.
- Open Settings > Security and login > Account PIN.
- Select Reset PIN.
- Verify your identity and read the deletion warning carefully.
- Proceed only if you accept permanent deletion of the protected content, then create a new four-digit PIN.
Before confirming, decide whether any locked conversation contains information you need. If it does, do not proceed with the reset unless you accept losing it. The current official instructions do not provide a non-destructive forgotten-PIN recovery method, and contacting Support is not a way to restore content deleted by the reset.

A known PIN is different: OpenAI’s documentation says you can change a PIN you know without deleting locked chats. Do not confuse that option with resetting a forgotten PIN; the reset warning concerns permanent deletion.
Why can’t I find my ChatGPT conversation in search?
First check whether the conversation is locked, archived, or simply associated with a different account or workspace. Each state has a different location and recovery outcome, so use this order before concluding that the conversation is gone.
- Check your account and workspace. Confirm that you signed in with the right account, email address, or single sign-on (SSO) method, and that you are in the workspace where you had the conversation.
- Search broadly. Search for words from the conversation title or its messages, and select All when that filter is available. Older chats may not be visible in the sidebar but can still be found through search.
- Check archived chats. Go to Settings > Data controls > Archived chats. Archived conversations remain searchable and can be unarchived.
- Check locked chats. Go to Projects > Locked chats and authenticate. Locked chats are excluded from regular search.
- Refresh or sign in again. Refresh ChatGPT, or sign out and back in, then check the account and workspace once more.
- Check OpenAI Status. An active service incident may affect what you can see or access.
- Consider a data export. OpenAI recommends requesting one to review data currently associated with an eligible account. An export is a way to review account data, not a documented way to undo a deletion or bypass a locked-chat PIN.
These checks address common visibility problems, but they do not reverse a deliberate deletion. If the conversation was deleted—including through Delete all chats—OpenAI says deleted chats cannot be recovered.

Is my ChatGPT chat locked, archived, or deleted?
Use the conversation’s status to choose the right next step. Unlocking and unarchiving preserve access; a forgotten-PIN reset and deletion are destructive.

The location is the practical first test: locked chats belong in Projects > Locked chats, archived chats in Archived chats, and deleted chats do not appear in either place. If you are uncertain which account or workspace you used, verify that before treating the conversation as deleted.
What happens to files and memories in a locked chat?
Locking affects content associated with the conversation, but files brought into ChatGPT from elsewhere can keep their existing access rules. Memory also behaves differently from the chat transcript itself.

- Files uploaded or created in the locked chat: They are protected by the lock and may be opened only in the originating locked chat while it remains locked.
- Files added from elsewhere in Space or Library: They retain their existing access rules rather than inheriting the locked chat’s protection.
- After a permanent unlock: Previously saved protected files may become visible in Library again.
- Regular memory: When enabled, a locked chat may use relevant information from regular Memory.
- Information remembered only in locked chats: It does not carry into regular chats. Memories created while a chat is locked are not automatically added to regular Memory when you unlock it.
A forgotten-PIN reset has a broader impact than losing access to the conversation text: it also permanently deletes memories stored only within locked chats and files or other content protected only by the previous PIN. Files with separate access rules are not described as protected only by that PIN.

Support cannot recover content permanently deleted by a forgotten-PIN reset, according to OpenAI’s locked-chat guidance. OpenAI’s separate chat-retention guidance also says deleted chats cannot be recovered. If the chat may only be hidden, check the account, workspace, archive, and locked-chat locations before treating it as deleted.

For deleted chats, OpenAI says permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days, with documented exceptions for de-identification and security or legal requirements. That description explains retention handling; it does not offer a way to restore a deleted chat during that period.

What should I do before changing or resetting my PIN?
Choose the action based on whether you know the current PIN and whether you need the protected content.
- You know the PIN and want the chat in regular history: Open the chat and choose Unlock chat.
- You know the PIN and want a different PIN: Use the documented PIN-change option; OpenAI says changing a known PIN does not delete locked chats.
- You forgot the PIN and need the chat: Do not confirm the reset if you are unwilling to permanently lose the protected content. The documented reset deletes it.
- You cannot find the chat and do not know its status: Check the account and workspace, search, Archived chats, and Locked chats before assuming it was deleted.
These actions are not interchangeable. Unlocking changes where a chat is available, archiving changes its visibility without deleting it, and resetting a forgotten PIN deletes protected content.

No. The 30-day period describes when permanent deletion is scheduled, subject to stated exceptions; it is not a user-accessible recovery window. OpenAI’s help guidance says deleted chats cannot be recovered.
