DOS and vintage-computer games are often a more natural fit because they may have been designed for keyboard or mouse input. Console games built around a gamepad may need key-to-controller remapping, and that does not make a mouse work as an aiming device.
Why keyboard-and-mouse support varies
“Retro games” covers systems with different original controls. A computer game may expect keyboard commands or mouse movement, while a console game may expect a gamepad. The emulator must also expose the right kind of input: support for a keyboard does not automatically mean that mouse input is available.
There is no complete compatibility list covering every game, emulator core, and host device. Check the selected core’s input options and the particular game’s control requirements rather than assuming one setting works everywhere.
Direct input, remapping, and mouse emulation
Direct keyboard input
With direct input, the emulator core receives keyboard input in the way a computer-oriented or arcade game expects. Libretro notes that some arcade and vintage-computer cores can be configured to read keyboard input directly. Keyboard mapped to a virtual controller
Instead of receiving keyboard input directly, a key can be assigned to a virtual gamepad button or direction. RetroArch supports mappings at controller, core, and game levels. This can make a keyboard usable for a gamepad-oriented title, but it does not turn the keyboard into the original controller or establish that the game supports mouse aiming.
Mouse input or emulation
Mouse support depends on the core. Some configurations expose a mouse directly; others provide mouse emulation through another input device. The DOSBox core documentation lists keyboard and emulated-mouse device types, as well as a gamepad-emulated mouse option: Libretro’s DOSBox documentation.

Using a keyboard and mouse with DOSBox Pure
DOSBox Pure has specific guidance for playing with keyboard and mouse instead of a gamepad. These instructions apply to that core, not to every RetroArch core.
- Enable Game Focus mode. In DOSBox Pure, use Game Focus mode when you want keyboard-and-mouse play rather than gamepad control.
- Adjust mouse sensitivity if needed. DOSBox Pure provides sensitivity options if movement feels too slow or too fast.
- Check the mappings. Automatic mappings may recognize a game. If they do not fit, use DOSBox Pure’s mapper to assign gamepad controls to keyboard, mouse, or joystick functions.

What to check before choosing controls
- The game’s intended input: Was it designed for keyboard, mouse, joystick, or gamepad?
- The core’s input support: Does it accept direct keyboard and mouse input, or will you need to map keys to a virtual controller?
- Mouse support: Does the selected core expose mouse movement and buttons in the way the game expects?
- Control demands: Consider whether the game depends on analog movement, several simultaneous controls, or precise mouse movement. These affect whether a remapped keyboard-and-mouse setup is a comfortable fit, but they are not guarantees of compatibility.
- Setup effort: Some games may work with existing mappings; others may require per-game adjustment.
RetroArch’s general settings for keyboard, mouse, and joypad input are described in its configuration guide. Treat those as general settings, not a universal switch that enables keyboard-and-mouse control for every game.
Arcade games and other cores
MAME documentation describes emulated keyboard modes and configurable input providers, so its input configuration can matter when playing arcade games. That does not mean every arcade title is best played with a keyboard and mouse. The game and its selected emulator configuration determine which controls are available and suitable. Do you need different hardware?
If you already have a working keyboard and mouse, you do not need to buy another set just to try a compatible game. The documentation establishes input options for certain cores, not compatibility or performance for any particular peripheral model. First check whether the game and core support the controls you want to use.
