Call of Duty campaign access is title-specific, not a franchise-wide offline feature. Activision says Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 require a continuous internet connection, including Campaign, so neither can be played with the console or PC completely disconnected. Can I play the Call of Duty campaign offline?
No for Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7: Activision requires a continuous internet connection for every mode, including Campaign. Being able to play solo without a paid console multiplayer subscription does not make either game offline-capable.

Activision’s official wording for Black Ops 7 is: “This means you’ll need a continuous internet connection to play any game mode, including Campaign.” Treat that as a requirement, not a suggestion about faster downloads or multiplayer matchmaking.

What this means for Black Ops 6
Black Ops 6 Campaign will not launch as a fully disconnected experience. The lack of a premium console multiplayer subscription only means that the subscription itself is not required for the Campaign entitlement on console. The console or PC must still be online, and the game must be fully updated with the required content installed.

What this means for Black Ops 7
Black Ops 7 has the same continuous-connection rule. Its solo Co-Op Campaign exemption concerns a paid social-play subscription on console, not network access. Activision also requires a Day One game update, so a disc cannot provide a self-contained, offline installation.
What is established for Modern Warfare II and III?
Activision’s current pages explain standalone downloads and cross-launch behavior for both games, but those installation instructions do not promise that every platform edition will work completely offline. Do not infer an offline guarantee simply because a title contains a single-player Campaign. Check the exact platform, edition, entitlement, and current publisher requirements before disconnecting.
What is the difference between internet access and a paid console subscription?
Internet access is the network connection used to sign in, validate content, retrieve updates, and run games that require continuous connectivity. A paid console multiplayer or social-play subscription is a separate service used for online console features. Activision’s Campaign exceptions remove the second requirement in specified solo situations; they do not remove the first.

- You still need an active internet connection when the title itself requires one.
- An account that owns the game, or has a valid subscription entitlement, must be signed in on the platform.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: turning off Wi-Fi because a Campaign is described as “solo,” then treating the resulting connection error as a missing license or damaged installation.
Will the disc work without internet?
Not for Black Ops 7. Activision states that the disc requires a Day One update before the game can be played, and the title still requires continuous connectivity after that update. A disc is therefore an ownership and installation medium, not an offline bypass.
Physical editions also require compatible hardware. A physical PlayStation 5 edition cannot run on a digital-only PS5, and an Xbox Series S cannot read a game disc. Verify the console model before opening or reinstalling a physical copy. On a disc-capable console, insert the disc whenever the platform requests ownership verification.

The same principle applies to other disc-based installers: the disc may start the process, but the platform can still require a launcher, a standalone download, patches, and online entitlement checks. Do not assume that every file needed for Campaign is printed on the disc.

Start with identity and entitlement, because installing the wrong generation or account can create an apparently missing Campaign even when the license is valid.
- Exact title: distinguish Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7, Modern Warfare II, and Modern Warfare III, including similarly named cross-launch entries.
- Platform and generation: verify PS4 versus PS5, Xbox One versus Xbox Series, or the correct PC storefront.
- Hardware: confirm that a physical edition is being used in a disc-capable console.
- Entitlement: sign in with the account that purchased the game or holds the relevant subscription access.
- Storage and updates: leave enough free space for the game and patches, and complete the console system update before starting a large installation.
How do I install the correct Call of Duty title and Campaign?
Use this least-destructive sequence. Menu names can vary by title, platform, and update, but the checks apply across the documented installation flows.
- Confirm the owned edition. Open the platform’s library or store while signed in to the purchasing account. For a cross-generation bundle on PS5, select the PS5 version rather than assuming the first tile is correct.
- Update the platform first. Install pending console system software and allow the game to complete its required update. For Black Ops 7, the Day One update is mandatory.
- Open the game’s content manager. In Call of Duty, use Menu > Manage Files to inspect installed and available content. Install Campaign and any required base files instead of downloading only the launcher.
- Use the platform’s title-specific controls. On Xbox, Black Ops 7 provides Choose what to install. On PS5, use Install Options. On Steam, open the game’s Properties > DLC list and select the required Campaign content.
- Search for standalone entries. Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare II, and Modern Warfare III are documented as standalone titles. If the old launcher does not show the Campaign, search the owned title directly in the platform store or library and download it there.
- For a disc reinstaller, follow the ownership path. Install the Call of Duty experience if prompted, insert the disc, open All Games, choose the title you own, and start the standalone download from the platform store.
- Restart only after downloads finish. Let queued updates and content packs reach completion, then relaunch the game and check Campaign again.
Do not use a missing tile in an older launcher as proof that your purchase disappeared. The documented move to standalone titles is the reason a direct library or store search can be necessary.
Why does Campaign say “not installed”?
That message usually means the Campaign package is absent, disabled, incomplete, or attached to a different title or console version. It is not, by itself, evidence that the game supports offline play or that the license has been revoked.
The Campaign content is not selected
Open Menu > Manage Files in Call of Duty and inspect the installed-content list. On PS5, check Install Options; on Xbox, use Choose what to install; on Steam, check Properties > DLC. Select the Campaign package and allow its download to complete.

The standalone title is missing
Search the platform library or store for the exact owned title. This is especially important for Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare II, and Modern Warfare III, whose current documentation describes standalone installs rather than relying solely on the former launcher entry.
The wrong generation or account is installed
On PS5, cross-gen bundles can present more than one version. Choose the version matching the console, and verify that the signed-in account owns the edition. A disc license also requires the disc to remain available for verification.
The update or download is incomplete
Check the platform’s download queue and available storage. A paused, failed, or still-processing update can leave the Campaign tile visible while its files remain unavailable. Resume or restart the download before attempting file repair.

A missing pack is usually a content-selection or add-on installation problem. Use the game’s content manager first, then the platform’s add-on list, and avoid deleting saved data while the entitlement is being checked.
For the documented PS4 warning “One or more DLC packs are out of date,” install the game’s add-ons from Library > Call of Duty > PlayStation Store > Your Add-Ons, then relaunch. This path addresses the listed add-on mismatch; it is not a general fix for every platform or title.
For other platforms, inspect the title’s downloadable-content list and confirm that the Campaign pack belongs to the same edition and region as the installed base game. If the pack is not offered to the owning account, stop before purchasing it again and check the account and entitlement details.

Why is Call of Duty asking me to buy the game again?
An ownership prompt can result from launching the wrong version, using a different account, or opening a launcher tile that no longer represents the standalone title. Rebuying the game is not the first remedy.

- Open the platform library and locate the owned title directly, rather than selecting a generic Call of Duty launcher tile.
- On PlayStation, Activision advises checking the primary user’s library for the launcher when the console asks an owner to purchase Modern Warfare II or Modern Warfare III again.
- If the prompt is on PC Game Pass for Modern Warfare III, check the device-limit condition described in Activision’s August 7, 2026 known-issues guidance before changing purchases.
- For a disc edition, insert the correct disc and confirm that the console can read it. A digital-only console cannot validate a physical copy.
What should I do if updates, cache, or game files fail?
Repair in an order that protects saves and avoids unnecessary downloads.
- Pause and resume the download, then restart the platform after all queued system and game updates are visible.
- Confirm storage availability and remove only unneeded applications or captures if space is preventing the patch from applying.
- Clear the console cache using the platform’s current support procedure, or use the PC storefront’s game-file integrity check when Activision lists that as the applicable repair.
- Reopen the title and recheck Campaign content in Manage Files or the platform DLC screen.
- Back up saves where the platform supports it. Treat saved-data deletion as a last resort: Activision warns that deleting saved data can be permanent.
Older support pages may show click paths that have changed. Use the current platform menu labels while preserving the same principle: repair the installation, not the save, unless support specifically directs otherwise.

No. Activision describes Optimized as higher-fidelity streaming that uses more bandwidth and Minimal as lower-bandwidth streaming with reduced fidelity. That setting changes streaming behavior; it does not disable the continuous-connection requirement for Black Ops 6 or Black Ops 7.
Choose the setting according to your connection and data limits, but do not expect either option to make Campaign launch without internet.

Escalate after confirming the title, account, hardware, required update, and Campaign package. Include the platform, console generation, disc or digital edition, exact error text, and the steps already completed.

Activision’s October 16, 2026 Black Ops 6 Installation and Setup article reported an issue affecting first-time disc installations on PS5. Its June 30, 2026 Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III installation articles also documented first-time PS5 disc-installation issues. Check those support pages for current status before relying on a workaround; a listed issue can change without a new game purchase fixing it.
How should I decide what to do first?
Use the distinction that matches the symptom:
- You want completely offline Campaign: do not plan on it for Black Ops 6 or Black Ops 7; both require continuous internet.
- You lack a paid console multiplayer subscription: check the title’s stated solo-Campaign exception, but keep the internet connection active.
- You have a disc: verify disc-capable hardware, insert the disc, complete the required update, and install the standalone title and Campaign content.
- Campaign is “not installed”: inspect Manage Files, Install Options, Choose what to install, or Steam’s DLC list.
- The game asks you to buy it again: verify the owning account and library entry before purchasing anything.
- A pack is out of date: update the listed add-ons, relaunch, and avoid deleting saves.

Why does a Modern Warfare III disc sometimes show a Modern Warfare II icon?

Can I install only Campaign to save storage?
